Editorial Review

An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine work of literature that can stand alongside any in English
I just reread it recently as an adult. I had this boxed set of three hardcover E.B. White books when I was a kid - Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan (which I remember as my favorite of the three, though I hardly remember it today), and Stuart Little.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte's Web
I've purchased this book for my daughter who is almost 9 years old, I end up reading it before her. This book is great for growing up kids; how wonderful and variable it is to have a friend he/she can depend on and be with to share fun, sad and so so stories to one another.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, and for a good reason
This book, though it may seem to be just a cute story about a pig, is actually quite sad.The first time I read this book I was in first grade and I liked it, but it was only when I just recently read it again that I realized how good it really is. This book, through its simple plot, reminded me a lot about how selfless some people are and also about growing up.No wonder it's a classic; even though it's written for little kids, it can remind a lot of people about their own lives and bring back a lot of fond memories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TWIST TO AN OLD FAVORITE
The story of the Three Little Pigs has been around for years and years and few children, nor adults, for that matter do not know of it.Here we have the roles of the "bad guy" completely reversed. The kids love this one and think it is truely funny.I did like the fact that the wolves did not receive the bad press that they normally receive in such tales and I did like the fact that even though the Big Bad Pig was truely bad in the beginning, he did indeed have redeeming features. The illustrations were great and the text followed the illustrations perfectly. This is a fun book to read to the class.I highly recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story, distracting pop-ups
The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig has been a favorite story in our household for many years. We love it!I can't recommend this story enough!!!!The big bad pig is a tyrant and the wolves are such ingenious engineers, it makes the Big Bad Pig look even more formidable with his sledgehammer and dynamite. I recently purchased the pop-up version for a friend, but can honestly say I enjoyed reading the ordinary book more than the pop-up version. The pop-ups were very distracting and I think it takes away the energy from the story and the reader becomes disengaged, trying to fiddle with all the contraptions.I vote for the good old-fashioned book version any time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Bad Pig is Good

5-0 out of 5 stars Belly Laughs for Preschoolers
Experiencing The Pig in the Pond with preschoolers is a delight. Three to Five year olds will be fully engaged by the rich illustrations and simple text--words full of meaning to young children. My preschool class waited with anxious anticipation to see what that very hot pig would do AND what would happen when Nelligan came home. The end is silly and satisfying and just what the children were waiting for. This has become a much loved favorite in our classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, Great laughability!
The Pig in the Pond was an instant hit with our son.Having seen the play "Charlotte's Web", he has grown sympathetic to the plight of pigs, and since they are very smart, any book about pigs is a worthy read. Neligan's farm is turned topsy- turvey when his pig chooses to do what a pig wouln't normally do, swim instead of wallow!Wallowing isn't mentioned in the story, but the shallow pond implies that plenty of wallowing could happen if he was not in the mood to swim, if he stirs up the water enough.Instead, Neligan's entire entourage of farm animals follows Neligan as he follows his pig into the cool refreshing water- Some smart pig.The illustrations are humorous and loveable, the animals and Neligan are all portrayed with wonderful expression. Five stars for the many times I am asked to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quack, Honk, Oink... SPLASH!
Neligan's pig doesn't swim... or does she? Find out in this delightful tale of a pig on a hot summer's day. The illustrations carry this simple story and the pig's discomfort is so genuine, I can't help but long for a paddle in a cool pool myself. It is also entertaining to see the outraged pond dwellers and their barnyard gossip chain portrayed... and the ending in which the tattle-tales join in the fun.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tales of Brave uPiggysees
Homer's got nothing on these seafaring swine, and I say that with all affection.David McPhail tells a tale of mythic proportion in another one of his popular pig books.Creative rhymes, chaotic scenes, and bright, imaginative illustrations make this one wild and rebellious adventure. Here, a young yuppie-type leaves for an ocean excursion, his blonde hair slicked back, and a tropical shirt covering his pale skin. He holds two suitcases, one of which has a "ROAM" travel decal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun to read and look at
When you're a parent and you read 3 or 4 books before bedtime, finding books which are fun to read is a priority (especially when you read the same book over and over again.)This is one that my son and I bothenjoy--about a man who goes on a cruise and finds that he's sharing hiscabin with a group of mischievous and misbehaving pigs.Though they get ineveryone's way, he comes to love them.Great fun to read (it's written inverse) and fun illustrations as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alexandra D Pima Student Tucson
I read this book to a group of kindergarten students. Right now they are learning about money just coins they know penny, dime and nickel. Some of the students were able to point out the coins and do some of the adding with the pig family. But majority of them just enjoyed the pictures and the storyline. They were unable to follow the hidden math problem. But overall it is a fun story to read with the students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pigs will be Pigs
A very creative way to teach money concepts.I liked the way the book reviews the way to make change.I read this to a group of 3rd graders.I don't know that they found the book entertaining, but it did help them review money.I think 2nd graders would probably enjoy the story more, but may not understand all of the math concepts as well as the third graders.

I read this book to children in first grade and they LOVED IT!!The children thought that this book was so hilarious. The book did such a great job incorporating money and counting into it.The illustrations were awesome as well, the pictures kept the children's attention while I was reading the book.I kept a tally of how much the pigs found and where they found the money. The children loved helping me keep track and they all participated in naming all the different locations of where the pig family kept the money.I do recommend this book for a circle or group reading, the children will love it!!

Editorial Review

Babe is a sensitive soul, deeply loyal to those who are kind to him. So when he is taken in by Farmer Hogget's sheepdog, Fly, it's only natural that he would want to follow in his foster mum's paw-steps. Even with Babe's considerable handicaps as a sheepdog--namely, that he's a pig--he manages to overcome all with his earnestly polite and soft-spoken ways, proving once again that might doesn't always make right. After saving the sheep from rustlers and wild dogs, Babe convinces Hogget that his idea of becoming a sheep-pig "b'aint so stupid" as it might look. But neither Hogget nor Babe, nor anyone else, could have predicted what follows.Read more

In this book, a pig was a prize to be won at a fair in sheep country.Mr. Hogget played the game for the pig. Mr. Hogget told his wife that he played the game for the pig.Mrs. Hogget said I'd like a pig. We can feed him scraps and eat him for Christmas dinner.Fly was training her four puppies when she saw the pig that Mr. Hogget won named Babe.Babe was adopted by Fly and soon learned to herd ducks, chickens, and other farm animals. He really wanted to meet the flock of sheep so he could be like Fly.Will he ever become a useful farm animal instead of a Christmas dinner?Babe saved the flock and convinced them that they would never eat him.Hogget was training Babe for the Grand Challenge Sheep Dog Trials.Mr.Hogget said to his wife see the telly and took off with Babe and Fly..... I reckoned this book for all ages, because it is a cute little book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maggie's Pig Review
Mr. Hogget, a sheep rancher, won a pig named Babe at the fair, very much like the one I went to in Sheridan, WY!When Babe came to the ranch, he was a very little pig, so Fly, the sheep dog, decided to mother him along with her five puppies.Babe was soon calling Fly, Mum.Babe also became friends Maaa, an old ewe who at the time needed to be taken care of separately.Maaa was always complaining on how sheepdog treated sheep.Babe asked, "Mum, will you train me to be a sheep-pig?"She said, "Yes."So, Fly started to train him how to be a sheep-pig on ducks, and soon he was fairly good. One day, when Maaa was back in the pasture with the flock and Fly and Farmer Hogget were at market, he decided to go meet the flock. It was chaos! There were sheep rustlers there!Babe ceased them from stealing all the sheep. From then, on Farmer Hogget let Babe come with him and Fly to check the sheep. The first time he came with them Farmer Hogget tried to get him to work the sheep. He did it perfectly! From then on he did most of the sheep work. One day, he decided to go visit the sheep.Again it was chaos! This time it wasn't rustlers, but worriers! They had Maaa down! Before they could kill her, Babe chased them away.Maaa died soon after.Farmer Hogget was readying babe for the sheep dog trials! Will he win?I recommend Babe the Gallant Pig, because it's very outstanding, exciting, and suspenseful!

Editorial Review

"I have been waiting my whole life to go to school," declares anexuberant Amanda Pig as she prepares for her first day of school. And what a day it turns out to be! Up before the sun, Amanda can barely contain her excitement as she puts on her new purple dress, eats breakfast, and kisses her mom and dad good-bye. Once on board the school bus, she eagerly plops down in an empty seat for her first adventure of the day--befriending a frightened little girl who won't tell anyone her name. Blessed with a warm heart and a generous temperament, Amanda Pig is just about the best new friend any shy kid could have. In this warm, charmingly illustrated tale of the joys and challenges of a first day at school, Amanda gives her new pal a nickname--Lollypop--and then gently assures her, "School is fun. You will like it. You'll see."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to read to your preschoolers
My 2- and 4- year-olds really liked this book. They both seemed captivated by the bright, interesting pictures and the interesting stories. I especially like the fact that Amanda was interested and excited about attending school, that her brother helped her out on the first day of class, and that she (Amanda) tried to alleviate the anxiety of one of her classmates. Overall, the book teaches great morals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Kids!
The book teaches you that you work with the stuff you have during Christmas time, and it's not the amount of money you have that is important, but the spirit behind the gift giving. In Hmong culture, a boiled egg is a major gift, meaning new spiritual life for the New Year.We could all learn a valuable lesson from the Hmong. What you have is not important compared to the kind of person you are and your own spiritual wealth.
