Editorial Review

A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to life in Margery Williams's timeless tale of the transformative power of love. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" This sentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought that maybe, just Read more

My therapist recommended that I read this book, for reasons unknown to me. It is a good children's book, but not for an adult suffering from agoraphobia.

Who would've thought that I would learn one of life's lessons tucked within a children's book?
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful heart-touching story...
Absolutely loved it.At first, I thought it was strange...Because I thought it would be animated, but instead it was a sequence of still pictures.Like, as if, you were reading the book. But, within the first few minutes I was hooked and a half hour flew by with a wonderful ending.Meryl Streep does a beautiful job narrating the story and the piano music by George Winston is lovely.

This story is adorable.I can finally read it to my daughter without crying. The only thing I didn't realize when I placed my order was that this was such a small book.I would have ordered a larger book had I known.

This book was my favorite bedtime story when my kids were younger. We had fun going back and forth telling each how much we love each other. The illustrations are also really nice for little ones.

This book is a timeless classic.Every parent should read it to their small children. It is a great way to end the day with a sweet good night.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
I must admit that the only reason I bought this book was because people said it is a classic and any web site about children's books named this one. I did not relate to it, because when I was growing up in India, this wasnt popular. When the book arrived and I actually looked at it, I did not understand what the hype was all about and did not really read it to my son until a couple of weeks ago. (I bought the book about a year ago when he was just 4 months :) )

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of books for little ones...
I like the fact that this is made for baby's so they can gnaw on it and it won't get completely destroyed! The stories are wonderful and it entertains my little one.She enjoys the pictures and love helping with flipping of the pages.Though the thick pages are hard to flip at times.Otherwise, just a nice set of books to start with your baby and read to until they're ready for "bigger" books.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm and wonderful
This book brought tears to my eyes the first time I read it.It is warm and comforting.A wonderful message for children that their mama will always be there no matter what...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not great, but okay
I feel like I am supposed to love this book since it is by the same author of the beloved "Goodnight Moon", but I don't and neither does my child. The illustrations are a bit bland and the story is unremarkable. It also lacks the rhythm of "Goodnight Moon".As a result it just doesn't seem to keep my child's attention. On one hand the message of a mom's unconditional love is rather sweet, but the way she goes about it is borderline creepy.By following her unwilling child all over the world she has the potential of appearing more obsessive and domineering than pleasant and caring. In the end, however, the book is harmless and many people seem to think it's a very charming book.I would just recommend giving it a quick read in the book store before you purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Love And Devotion
I love the runaway bunny and my kids love the runaway bunny. It makes us laugh, brings us closer together, and helps reinforce the most important lesson my children can learn "A Mother's Love has no limits." We laughed at the young bunny's frustration, marveled at the mother bunny's persistence, and discussed the love and commitment that strengthens our own family. The Runaway Bunny has been a useful tool in reinforcing my dedication to my children. As young children enjoyed the pictures. It's small and simple, but the lesson is profound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What kid wouldn't want to read about a vampire bunny?
I don't care how old I get, I'm just not going to turn down a chance to read a book about a vampire rabbit, especially if it's told from the point of view of a dog.Good old Harold was pretty much living the good life until the introduction into the household of a cute wittle bunny wabbit the Monroes brought home with them from the movies one night.(Apparently a Dracula fan, the bunny was all settled in to watch the Count do his thing when one of the Monroe kids sat on him in the theater.)Little Bunnicula doesn't really bother Harold at all, since he sleeps all day and doesn't come between him and his treats.Harold's feline friend Chester, on the other hand, doesn't cotton to Bunnicula at all, seeing what no one else seems to notice - this bunny has fangs, and his coloration pattern sometimes makes it look like he's wearing a cape.Reading up on vampires while the Monroes sleep, Chester quickly becomes obsessed with getting this little bat in bunny's clothing out of the house as soon as possible - especially after healthy vegetables begin to show up completely drained of their color.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
This is a great book.I have read it more than once.I especially like the white vegetables!I think that both boys and girls will like it.This is an interesting book because it helps you imagine how dogs and cats might think. The author of this book has a good imagination!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bunniculee, Bunnicula, Bunniculee, Bunicula-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Children's librarians have to prepare for certain kinds of questions. When a child walks up to your Reference Desk, you need to be ready to get them the exact book they're looking for at the exact moment that they want it.I get a lot of young kids, mostly girls, who want a good vampire book of their very own.Aside from the usual "Vampire State Building" and "Dracula Is a Pain In the Neck", both by Elizabeth Levy, there's really not a lot out there to recommend wholeheartedly. In fact, nine times out of ten, I find myself suggesting that most accessible of vampirism books, "Bunnicula".It doesn't star a human vampire, but you can hardly blame me.Now just this past week I found myself in the unenviable position of needing to find lots and lots and lots of copies of a single book for the upcoming meeting of my homeschooler bookgroup. And what delightful chapter book did I have enough copies in my library branch to satisfy screaming hoards of homeschooled kiddies?Again, it's "Bunnicula" to the rescue. It may not seem at first glance to have earned itself the moniker of "classic children's book", but I can attest right here and right now that when it comes to lifesaving go-to titles, I'll take "Bunnicula" over "Bridge To Terebithia" or "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret", any day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such sweet stories!
I ordered this set of books for my girls, ages 4 and 5, last month. We had checked them out of our local library many times, so I knew they would like them. They absolutely love them! My 5 year old knows the words to "First Tomato" by heart, and I just love watching her "read" it. At first I was a little disappointed by the size, but actually the girls like them sized down so they can hold them better. The stories are absolutely beautiful, and they're the only books in poem form that my kids really enjoy. I think these stories teach kids that even when you're having a bad day where everything goes wrong, you can get through it by imagining yourself at a better place and time--a lesson that's good for adults as well!

This was my first purchase from Amazon and I was very pleased with the professional service and the quick delivery of my order

5-0 out of 5 stars A staple for every home library
How wonderful it has been to get reintroduced to all of Potter's sweet characters. My mom had a small board book collection when I was growing up and I forgot all about these stories. There is just something so warm and relaxing about them.My four year old is loving them (they're a bit too long for my two year old's attention span and she usually wanders away after awhile). However you just can't go wrong with this book--it's a classic and definitely timeless. My only suggestion is that sometimes a "complete" edition is the cheaper route to go, but it does make for a heavy book for little ones to tote around or try to flip through. So if you are looking for something to be a more kid friendly you may want to purchase the individual stories separately.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful alphabet book, timeless quality
This book is a must read for any young child- even an infant. The black and white pencil drawings are intricate and soft, and though my son is older, he was drawn right into the illustrations. The copy that we checked out came with an audiotape, with accompanying music which is printed in the book on the last page, with the words. The book itself it very rhythmical and lends itself to be sung by a child even without the music.I found a few grammatical (punctuation) errors (Scholastic 1990 edition), which tripped me up as I read along, but not having another printing to compare to, I didn't let that determine the star quality of this book.I can almost remember it being read to me as a child, and I would read it to anyone who would sit and listen.

A TERRIFIC BOOK FOR YOUNG CHILDREN!!!! THIS LOVELY LITTLE BOOK TELLS THE STORY OF A BUNNY FINDING ITS WAY HOME AFTER IT WAS RUDELY AWAKENED BY AN, QUOTE, "APPLE, BIG AND RED". IT MEETS UP WITH A FROG, A, QUOTE, "KITTEN, CATNIP CRAZY" AND A LIZARD. THE BOOK CAN BE ENJOYEDBY ALL, 1-YEAR-OLDS THROUGH 100-YEAR-OLDS. IN SOME EDITIONS, IT ALSO HAS A NICE LITTLE SONG. What a bargain on this book!I bought several copies to give to my daughters friends who have a loose tooth.I'll be giving packets of carrot seeds along with the book.I love the idea of substituting the seeds for the usual quarter (or dollar, with the rate of inflation these days!)The story along with the seeds teach a child responsibility, nurturing andpatience. You couldn't ask for a better gift from the tooth fairy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful from beginning to end
As a parent, this may very well be my favorite bedtime story.Don't judge the book based on the TV show-- it is much better!Max and Ruby are making birthday cakes for Grandma.Max is making an earthworm cake but Ruby wants to make an angel surprise cake with rasbery fluff frosting.Despite Ruby's increasingly restrictive instructions, Max keeps knocking her ingredients off the table, and Ruby keeps sending him to the store with a shopping list for replacements.Max wants red hot marshmellow squirters to top off his cake, and his attempts to communicate this to the grocer make up the heart of the story.

This is an excellent picture book for young children. The story line is simple and easy for kids to connect with. Many children have siblings and can relate to Max and Ruby. The illustrations are heart warming and draw the reader in. Rosemary Wells repitition of events within the plot make her an excellent storyteller. Bunny Cakes is an endearing story.

A cute story about kids and shopping...and the things that can go wrong!Includes pages that you can copy so your child can have "bunny money".Very cute.

5-0 out of 5 stars another good Max and Ruby book
I think this is one of the better Max and Ruby books, along with Bunny Cakes and Bunny Party.Has play money on the end pages that you can photocopy and cut out for your kids to play with.Neat concept and fun to discuss who the "famous rabbits" on the different bills are supposed to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Kid's book, Great Math Lesson!!!
Cute! Max and Ruby go shopping for their Grandma's birthday, but are disappointed when their dream gift costs $100. They do not have much money and Max keeps wasting it. (Food, trip to the laundromat, bus fare, etc.) They manage to buy two "great" presents~ from Ruby, singing bluebird earrings, from Max glow in the dark vampire teeth. But their money is all used up. So Grandma picks them up and she wears the gifts all they wayhome. Read more
