5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Commendable Variety, and Entertaining Illustrations
What a fantastic way to wet a child's appetite(or adults, for that matter) for poetry! This collection offers the silly and the sad, the simple and verbose, the long and the short, and the wise and other wise.=)Children can request which poems they may choose to use the extensive index or well organized table of contents to find exactly what they are looking for (Halloween poems, poems about nature or school, etc). This is a perfect fit from nightstand to classroom shelf.I highly recommend this collection of poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Start Your Collection
This book is filled with poetry for any and every occasion and has great illustrations to go along. It is a good book to help you discover what type of poetry your children will enjoy.

2-0 out of 5 stars this is for "children" 9 and older?
The collection doesn't sound too bad, but won;t a self-respecting 9 year old (or older) person reject this book simply on the basis of the illustrations (you klnow, the ones with the "round faced happy children") and the title of the book? I know when I was nine I avoided books with "children's" in their title. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages!
I've had this book a long time and still love it!It has fun, charming, and sometimes touching poems.I was surprised to see the age range listed... it truly is a timeless, ageless book that is fun!Perhaps you'll take a little peek when you're in a bookstore!

5-0 out of 5 stars So fun at any age!
i am 12 years old but Where the Sidewalk Ends is one of my favorite books. This book always put a smile on the face of the grumpiest person! Even one look at the pictures makes me smile; as soon as you read one poem from any of Silverstein's books', you think 'This is going to be a great book!'. That is exactly what I thought. He is a super writter!

5-0 out of 5 stars Where the Sidewalk Ends
This book was my favorite Shel Silverstein book; it was funny, interesting, and very well-written. I love how Silverstein draws his own pictures with his books though his poetry is really art itself. I loved this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Poems for Now and Everafter
One day, I found one of these poems running around in my head 40 years after I first began reading them to my boys when they were very young. As my older son took possession of that copy some time back, I had to order a new one for my 67-year old self just to get the lines absolutely right. It was worth it.My only regret is that I have no grandchildren to drum them into.Charming, literate and comforting.

5-0 out of 5 stars When We Were Very Young by A. A. Milne

5-0 out of 5 stars Like seeing familiar animals through a kaleidoscope!
This book is worth it for the "Bumble Bee" poem on page 6 alone but the end page art is also incredible. The poets are very eclectic ranging from Margaret Wise Brown of "Goodnight Moon" fame to Ted Hughes and D.H. Lawrence! This is a wonderful book for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures and Words form a Lyrical Feast
Jack Prelutsky continues to prove that he cannot be pigeon-holed into the role of simply a poet.In his role as editor of yet another poetry anthology with the publication of The Beauty of the Beast, Prelutsky hasonce again chosen poems that fit with and enhance the book's overall theme. Children will be delighted with the variety of poetic genres exhibitedhere--from the sublime to the hillarious.Meilo So's pictures form acharming backdrop to these poems, and each section of the book features abeautifully lyric haiku written by Prelutsky. This book is truly a feastfor any poetry lover and would enhance anyone's personal or classroomlibrary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pizza as Large as the Sun - terrific for my granddaughter
I gave this book to my granddaughter who is nine and loves to read. When she opened the Christmas present, she sat right down and started to read. She shared some poems with me. They express a different way of looking at a regular thing in a funny way. Days later, she was still glued to the book. It definately kept her interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bravo to Jack Prelutsky

Edward Lear's nonsense poem about two unlikely sweethearts--an elegant owl and abeautiful cat--has found a perfect match in artist Jan Brett. She traveled to the Caribbean (the landwhere the Bong-tree grows, perhaps?) to research her illustrations as well as the settings, costumedetails, plants, and fish native to the area. Readers can follow an illustrated subplot of two yellowfish who also fall in love under the pea-green boat. A charming treatment of a classic children'spoem. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and fun information
This book gives good basic information on penguins in a very fun format. The poems are catchy.I teach 3-6 year olds and I caught them repeating the phrases they liked the best.I highly recommend it for this age group.

5-0 out of 5 stars reading aide
I bought this book for my son since he is interested in penguins. Most penguin story books are promoted to toddlers or are penguin science books; not books for fictional reading for older children.Normally he doesn't choose to read but when he received this book for christmas, he immediately put down his other items and began to look through the book.Later that evening, before bedtime, he chose to read his book before going to sleep. He also liked that the book had poems; something he's been studying in school and hasn't seen how it could be fun to read. Now he likes them a little more.I'm glad it will help to promote more reading for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poems About Penguins.
First of all, I love this book because I love penguins. However, as a piece of children's literature, it's so much more. This is an excellent example of how literature (poetry) and science can go hand and hand. There are some poems in this book that seem written just for fun, (e.g. "Be My Penguin"). However, most of the poems in this book are written about and around actual behaviors that penguins exhibit: from regurgiating their food to feed the young ("Regurgitate") to the motherly instincts of father penguins ("A Hatchling's Song" and "My Father's Feet")to poetic riddles about penguin predators (sea lion, killer whale). The book is charming, easy to read, and full of delightful penguin illustrations. A great gift for any child interesting in science or literature or anyone who (like me) just loves penguins. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun, even for kids who aren't "insect lovers"
This is a book of poems about insects. The poems are great; their content is funny and rhythmic. Through the poems we learn about the various insects. Some have very creative text formatting such as the inchworm; the text is shaped like a humped-up inchworm. The illustrations are very creative collages that are unique compared to most other children's books. 5-0 out of 5 stars It's great! (Ethan 5) It's Wonderful (Alissa 6)

Even if there were no wonderful poetry in this book (which there is), it would stand onits own as a stunning tribute to children's illustration. Nine Caldecott medalists are representedhere, including MauriceSendak, ArnoldLobel, and Leo and DianeDillon. This meaty selection of more than 100 poems includes many old favorites such as"The Gingerbread Man" by Rowena Bennett and poems by A.A. Milne and e.e.cummings, as well as limericks, humorous verse, and contributions from many cultures. Each section of poems--grouped by themes ranging from "Spooky Poems" to"Mostly Nonsense"--is illustrated by a different artist. You'll find biographical notesabout the illustrators and indexes to the poems by title, first line, and author. Editorial Review

Robert Frost's well-known poem takes on new life in its first picture-book adaptation. The poem--long appreciated for its strong rhythm and evocative images--leaves readerswondering, "Where was the man going on the darkest night of the year?" and"Why on earth did he stop by the woods in a snowstorm?" Artist Susan Jeffersanswers these questions visually--the kindly older gentleman who narrates the poem stops hissleigh to feed the forest birds and creatures. He stops once more to visit his daughter andgrandchildren, then is off again through a blizzard, with many miles to go before he can sleep. The silent beauty of a snowy night shines through Jeffers's artwork; the man's clothing andblanket are the only bright touches of color in the white and wintry world of the woods. Thisquiet yet powerful book has a magic all its own. Read more

Snow drifted down overnight and throughout the day, leaving our woods a veritable wonderland. I rushed to put my hands on this book, "STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING." I knew Robert Frost's words would be especially appropriate this snowy day to introduce children to the lyrical beauty of this poem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful...
This particular poem is my favorite Robert Frost poem, and is one of my top five favorite poems. I was hoping that this book would portray the simple beauty and nuances of this poem, to read to my granddaughter. It more than met my expectations. Even my husband, who is a photographer and who doesn't read as much as I do, found the artwork in this book to convey beautifully the words of Frost's poem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic of the Genre
This is the book I read, over and over, at the demand of my language-infatuated seven-year-old. He may not have understood half the words, but he delighted in their sounds. When he tired of the book I put it on my bedside bookstand, and I still pull it out when I'm in the mood for some inspired, sophisticated nonsense. The best ABC book ever.

In this engaging poetry collection, popular children's book illustrator Tomie dePaolasucceeds again in creating cheerful, rib-tickling animal characters, from the renegade reptile inEve Merriam's"Alligator in the Escalator" to the cavorting cats in T. S. Eliot's "The Song ofthe Jellicles." This thoughtful selection of 86 poems--in a spacious, oversized format-- includes well-known works from William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, andFrederico Garcia Lorca, with a sprinkling of haiku for good measure. Many youngsters are drawnto the simplicity of dePaola's art, which includes pictures of children of all races at home and atplay. A great beginning poetry book. Read more

"I saw Esau kissing Kate, / The fact is we all three saw; / For I saw him, / And he saw me, / And she saw I saw Esau." So goes the schoolyard chant that graces this brilliant collection with its title. This "Schoolchild's Pocket Book," edited by lore and literature legends Iona and Peter Opie and gleefully illustrated by Maurice Sendak, definitely belongs on every child's shelf, right next to Mother Goose nursery rhymes and Grimms' fairy tales. 5-0 out of 5 stars a sentimental favorite
I received this book for my fourth Christmas from a beloved uncle, and it has stayed with me in a cherished position ever since (though granted, that's only been about a decade and a half). Although I doubt Opie's comment that all children need to know some rhymes by which to gain popularity is entirely accurate for the playground of today, a well-placed rhyme did mark a few points of my childhood, and helped me to realize that such fools as could not appreciate the absurdity of Moses Supposes, or Eaper Weeper, chimney sweeper, weren't worth my time.
5-0 out of 5 stars I Saw Esau
A delightful book for kids of all ages! Each page of this book has delightful, light, charming prose. The illustrations by Maurice Sendak put the final touches on a lovely, well-bound volume of reading for a family to share or a child to escape to a cozy window-seat and read. I recommend thisbook for someone who wants to give a nice, lasting gift to a special childor friend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to use in the classroom when teaching poetry.
This book was a fantastic support when teaching 5th graders to move beyond "recipe" poetry. The ode structure helps them find the poetry in their day to day experiences. They thoroughly enjoyed listening to GarySoto's odes, and were eager to write their own.

Editorial Review

"Listen, my children, and you shall hear/Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere ..." So begins one of the most stirring poems in American literature.Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote "Paul Revere's Ride" in 1861, nearly 100 years after the actual midnight ride that began on April 18, in 1775. The poem creates a suspenseful story as American colonist Paul Revere decides with his friend Robert Newman and others to avert a British attack on Concord, Massachusetts. The British had come from Boston in search of the colonists' arms supply. What Revere and his friends didn't know was whether the Redcoats would come by land (around the mouth of the Charles River) or by sea (across the river). Newman spotted the British "by sea" and signaled from the Old North Church tower to Revere, who was "Ready to ride and spread the alarm/Through every Middlesex village and farm,/For the country folk to be up and to arm." And, by morning, the country folk were ready, indeed. "Chasing the red-coats down the lane,/Then crossing the fields to emerge again/Under the trees at the turn of the road,/And only pausing to fire and load." This battle, the first of the American Revolution, drove the British back to Boston.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It DOES contain the whole thing...
Just a point of correction on the review given by Seidur above--the Ted Rand illustrated edition not only contains the complete Longfellow poem, it is also correctly titled (contrary to two erroneous criticism made by Seidur). It is, I think, the best edition of this wonderful poem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids
A great introduction to Longfellow and the roots of this great Country. The artwork is beautiful. A good book for young children learning to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching history to young children
For the last two days I have read Paul Revere's Ride by Longfellow to my 4 and 7 year old. We have learned the history, vocabulary words, the different methods the artist used to illustrate the poem, and many other interesting facts. They are begging for more! What are great book! Longfellow makes history come to life. You can just feel the night air in Revere's face as he so courageously warns the people. ... Read more

A whimsical concoction of poems with the sea as the theme.Poems are illustrated with fantastical & colorful drawings that draw you in to the action & focus of the poem. The personal reason for my purchasing this book was because one of Windham's illustrations was inspirational in the tattoo of a mermaid that I got about a year ago.Fun for reading to kids.Short & Sweet bedtime rhymes! ...
