Editorial Review

"The STRINGS all soar, the REEDS implore, / The BRASSES roar with notes galore. / It's music that we all adore. / It's what we go to concerts for." In this exuberant tribute to classical music and the passionate, eccentric musicians who play it, author Lloyd Moss begins with the mournful moan and silken tone of one trombone. A trumpet sings and stings along, forming a duo, then a fine French horn joins in, "TWO, now THREE-O, what a TRIO!" The mellow cello ups it to a quartet, then ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! a violin soars high and moves in to make a quintet. The flute that "sends our soul a-shiver" makes a sextet, and "with steely keys that softly click," a sleek, black, woody clarinet slips the group into a septet. We move on! A chamber group of ten!And the orchestra is ready to begin. Moss should be congratulated for creating a playful, musical stream of rhyming couplets that seamlessly, slyly teaches the names of myriad musical groups. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction
I'll admit, I was not crazy about this one at first but my child loved it from the beginning. This is a great way to expose your kids to music and a number of different instruments beyond drums, guitar and piano. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!
My 2 and a half year old son absolutely adores this book, and we enjoy reading it to him (over and over and over...)Lovely illustrations, exquisite poetry, light-hearted and yet educational on so many levels... a pure delight!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encore! Encore! Give us more!
Music and counting go hand in hand and this book does a great job of entertaining the reader while teaching. You will learn about several musical instruments and the names of musical groupings from solo to orchestra. The illustrations are gorgeous. This is a fun and refreshing book. As a parent and avid reader, I never tire of reading this one. This is definitely in my top 10 new classic favorites. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations-captures my daughters imagination
This book has beautiful illustrations that ask for long leisurely looks- perfect for a pre-reader looking for the story in the pictures. The story itself is well told and holds the attention of my 5 year old girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rapunzel: always a favorite!
This book captures my little ladies' hearts and imagination. Wonderful illustrations and beautiful use of the English language. We began using it to learn vocabulary when my daughter was 3 and she still loves this one at age 6! A delight for the whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning images
I'm amazed by Zelinsky's gift at art! The tower (that tall, slender thing doesn't look very believable to me) doesn't really impress me, but that's just a minor complaint that I have (aside from that Rapunzel and her prince could have gotten to know each other before the marriage).

Editorial Review

"Tuesday evening, around eight"--a deceptively mundane beginning for what proves to be a thrilling, miraculous, and surreal amphibian journey. Slowly and quietly on this particular Tuesday, a few fat frogs begin hovering over a swamp, riding lily pads like magic carpets. Clearly satisfied and comfortable, the floating frogs are as serene as little green buddhas. Gradually, the flying fleet grows in momentum and number, sailing over the countryside and into an unsuspecting town. These frogs know how to have fun--startling the occasional bird, waving webbed feet at late-night snack-eaters, and even changing the channels on a sleeping granny's television. As day breaks, the frogs lose their lily pads, head back to the pond, and wait impatiently for their next scheduled departure.Read more

Flying frogs having fun.We all enjoy it.Hardly any words, but the incredible art jump starts imagination and sparks long conversations with my boys about what is happening on each page. For ages 3 on up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and utterly deightful
David Wiesner's brilliant children's book Tuesday has long been one of my favorites illustrated books.Who else could bring such fantastic whimsy and realism to this genre. What makes the complexity of Wiesner's story all the more amazing is that he tells the tale only through images. As in some of his other works, there is no text...and yet the story is sweet, funny and joyous.I highly recommend this and his other book for folks who love art and imagination...He's right up there with Sendak and Van Allsburg!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for pre-readers, frog-lovers, and more
We love this little book.My 3-year-old can "read" it to herself now that we've read it together several times. We go through it and talk about all the pictures and she just giggles and giggles as I explain what is going on in them.I also get her perspectives on what the frogs' expressions might indicate and what is happening in the story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Everybody Book
This is one of those books that I call a real book--not for kids, not for adults, not for girls...just a good, well-written and illustrated book that is brilliantly designed to reach you where you are at.It did have the added bonus of making me cry on the last page, in a bittersweet sort of way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story and pictures!
This is a beautiful book that my 3 year old loves to be read over and over. The pictures are wonderful to look at, with such rich detail.I am moved by the story, and I cry at the end every time. One of thier best books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grow for me
There are good David Small books and there are bad David Small books.Good David Small books are usually (though by no means always) written AND illustrated by David Small himself.Bad or poorly created David Small books are usually written by someone else, using Mr. Small's talents as a kind of afterthought. The exception to this rule (and all rules, as you well know, must have exceptions) is the pairing of David Small and his wife Sarah Stewart. After creating the fabulous "Money Tree" and the bibliophilic, but somewhat disturbing, "The Library", the two combined their talents yet again to write a gentle story of love, gardening, and family.Read more

"I am Eloise/I am six." So begins the well-loved story of Eloise, the garrulous little girl who lives at New York's Plaza Hotel. Eyebrow raised defiantly, arm propped on one jutting hip, Eloise is a study in self-confidence. Eloise's personal mandate is "Getting bored is not allowed," so she fills her days to the brim with wild adventures and self-imposed responsibilities. An average Eloise afternoon includes braiding her pet turtle's ears, ordering "one roast-beef bone, one raisin and seven spoons" from room service, and devising innovative methods of torture for her guardians.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ooh I just love Eloise!
Awesome book!Totally loved it--my three year old finds her fascinating."Why does she want to pour a pitcher of water down the mail chute, mommy?"She's a naughty girl but such a wonderfully creative and self reliant one! I think she is a great role model for my little girls!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother of Two
I would think someone who would be offended by the style in which "Eloise" is written would be "smart" enough to know that the expression is "for all intents and purposes" and not "intensive purposes."
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Wehave one of the softcover books and enjoy it very much and so I thought I would by this for my 4-year-old (who actually acts like Eloise sometimes). BAD CHOICE! I read through it on my own before I read it to her and THANK GOODNESS! Eloise is a back-talking, foul-mouthed terror! I can see how some adults may enjoy this book - maybe they're living vicariously through her antics. But she is no example in this book for small children. I'll be more careful next time - there definitely are cute "Eloise" books out there but this one was dreadful. If you're a big fan, read it through completely first to see it it's a fit. I must say that I was horrified. ... Read more

"Good night, Gorilla," says the weary watchman as he walks by thegorilla cage on his nightly rounds at the zoo. The gorilla answers by quietly pickpocketing the guard's keys, stealthily trailing him, and unlocking the cages of every animal the oblivious fellow bids goodnight to. Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light.Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy reading BOARD book.
This sneaky gorilla steals the zookeepers keys. As the keeper says goodnight to all the animals, the gorilla is behind him (with his pet mouse who is dragging his banana for him) letting out all the animals so they can spend the night in the house of the keeper. Cute, colorful illustrations. Repetition of words and known animals allows this book to be an easy reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
We have recieved this book as a gift, but had to buy it too, because my baby have been reading it too much! The book was "torn" to separate pages, because she wouldn't go to sleep, in the car or even eat without it. The pictures are great! And it is hard book, so my girl also tried her teeth on it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gorilla!
When my son was born, two of our friends independently decided that the best way to buy him a baby gift was to take their young daughters to a book store and let them choose books they thought he would like. This was the only one they both selected. Our son is still in the "I licked the corner and it was good" stage of book appreciation, but I've enjoyed reading it to him.The pictures are colorful and interesting, with lots to point out to a small child. And the storyline is surprisingly gentle, with the gorilla leading a parade of zoo animals to the zookeeper's home where they all curl up around his bedroom for sleep. It's easy to see how this one made it onto the favorites list. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "Mouse Mess" is good, but kind of for youngsters
You can call me StoryMaker. "Mouse Mess" is a great book with nice rhymes and great pictures. I especially like the mouse's house. It also makes me hungry, with all of the delightful food. However, I enjoyed this book a lot more when I was a lot younger. The plot of the story and style of the mouse is better for youngsters. I still love the rhymes, size of text, and pictures. Overall, Mouse Mess is a nice book and especially if you have a young child/sibling. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!

Okay, I'll admit it. It's cool to see the look on Alex's face when he gets books that have his name in them. And this was definitely a winner. I visited a friend in a Malaysian hospital, and on the TV in the lobby was an animated series allegedly about Madeline. Tis an abomination devoutly to be missed.
5-0 out of 5 stars The complete tales of Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans
As the title indicates, "Mad About Madeline: The Complete Tales" has the virtue of providing all six of Ludwig Bemelmans stories about the irrepressible Madeline, who first made her appearance way back in 1939.There is also an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anna Quindlen; an essay by Bemelmans on how he invented Madeline entitled "The Isle of God"; and never-before-published photographs of the Bemelmans family and working sketches of Madeline.I was rather surprised to learn Madeline was celebrating her 60th birthday and even more surprised to learn these stories were not originally written and published in France (I thought it was obvious they were).
5-0 out of 5 stars -----> :-D
Okay, so my title is cutesy, but so is this glorious book. Why it is the publishers waited through four generations of appreciative readers to give little girls (and not so little girls) all the Madeline stories in one volume is beyond me, but who's to complain now that they're finally here? I bought this on first sight. In fact my hand was reaching for it at Borders before my brain had quite coordinated with my eyes what I was seeing. These tales of the spirited little Madeline and her life at the French orphanage are full of the sort of lovely, bright illustrations children react to and remember. (I've written about it before but there's something about vivid colors in a book that stimulates a young mind as little else can, and Madeline is brimming with them.) Now that all Madeline tales can be held in two hands, the opportunity is finally there to settle into bed for the night and read through these beloved little stories until sleep carries you away. Simply grand!

Every once in a while a book crosses our desks that makes us sit quietly delighted--except for a few squeaks of unmitigated joy--and this oversized, energized, stylized, highly prized book of fables is one of them. Jon Scieszka has a simple philosophy of the fable: "If you can't say something nice about someone, change the guy's name to Donkey or Squid." After all, the alleged Aesop did it. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Silly Morals
This book has beautiful pictures. The situations are ones that kids can relate to - and offer an opportunity for kids to learn some appropriate behaviors in difficult situations. Then they follow it up with a moral that is pointless.I am disappointed in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't say something nice about someone?Make them a squid
Those of us who remember Jon Sciezka and Lane Smith as the author and illustrator of "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!" will know exactly what they are getting into when they pick up "Squids Will Be Squids: Fresh Morals, Beastly Fables."The thesis here is that even before Aesop a legion of storytellers have told stories about annoying, weird, pain-in-the-neck people, turned them into animals, added a moral, and thereby changed rude gossip and bad jokes into fables. The idea here is present a collection of fables that Aesop might be telling if he was alive today. The moral, according to Sciezka and Smith, is that "If you can't say something nice about someone, change the guy's name to Donkey or Squid."Read more

Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together--go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. No matter that they happen to be gigantic hippopotami, they learn the same lessons humans do about the ups and downs of true friendship. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef's feelings is not the best laid plan.Read more

This book is wonderful because it contains ALL of the George and Martha stories. The stories are funny and sweet. We've given this book many times as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars hysterical, cute and witty collection of stories about two best friends...
This pair of large, friendly, well-dressed hippopotemi is a throwback to some of the happiest days of my childhood.Though, these stories are short and to-the-point, they actually carry powerful and compelling messages about friendship and life. This is evident in how these two large creatures treat and interact with one another. Not only are the pictures hysterical, the stories last with you for a lifetime.I am thinking, in particular, about "Split Pea Soup," the story about Martha and her obsession with preparing soup that George just doesn't want to eat anymore.I am sure this is a dilemma that people, young and old, can relate to!I am so glad that they put this collection together, with a forward by Maurice Sendak.I reccomend this to readers, young and old.

Editorial Review

The curious, protean nature of water has fascinated people for ages, andWalter Wick--the photographer of Scholastic's highly acclaimed I Spy series--is noexception. Wick is a great admirer and collector of 100-year-old science books where, according to his afterword, "Even the simplest experiments appeared as ifimprobable or impossible things were happening. Intrigued, I recreated some of theexperiments and photographed them with my camera. The results seemed magical, butnot because of any photographic trick; it was only the forces of nature at work. It wasfrom these explorations that the idea for this book emerged." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect science picture book
Beautiful pictures and a wide variety of science related to water is illustrated.A thoughtful teacher grades 3-8 could easily construct a full science unit from this well constructed picture book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photographic wonder
This book is a must have for any school library or homeschool science collection.Wick is perhaps best known for his "I Spy" books but here he is demonstrating his incredible talent with a science subject. He captures the essence of a water drop, the nature of steam, the momentary existence of a soap bubble and a snowflake in exquisite beauty. He shows us what our own eyes cannot fathom.Use this book to teach and learn about the water cycle, states of matter or art appreciation. The book pairs wonderfully with "Snowflake Bentley" by Jacqueline Briggs Martin.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Come On, Rain!"A Truly Beautiful Book!
I found the book "Come On, Rain!" at our local library and immediately picked it up. The first thing you will notice about this beautiful book are the gorgeous ilustrations! The pictures in this book are lovely and the prose is so happy and full of the anticipation everyone feels on a hot summer day while waiting for a cooling rain. You and you children will love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical picture book
This lyrical ode to the coming rain, accompanied by the soothing wash of lush watercolors, make Hesse's Come on, Rain! sure to please young children. In prose that reads like poetry, young Tessie bemoans the heat of summer while waiting with confidence that rain will soon come.Along with her multicultural friends and all their mammas, Tessie dances in gratitude for the refreshing wetness the rain bestows. While the lyrical prose is of such beautiful quality it could stand on its own, the soft watercolor illustrations portray the emotions of the characters in such lovely detail; the two, the prose and illustrations, combine to create a delightful work of art.Even with the vertical lines of rain which one would expect to stop the motion of the story, Muth manages to create a sense of flowing from left to right, page to page, in keeping with the cadence of the text by using achromatic colors for the backgrounds of most pages.Recommended for children ages 4-8.Public librarians may want to share this title in a storytime about rain, along with Bill Martin's Listen to the Rain.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is more than just another weather story!
"Come on, rain!" are the fervent words of Tess, as she looks toward the sky with a great deal of anticipation and hope. It has not rained in 3 weeks. Therefore, everyone in Tess's neighborhood and city was hoping for rain to bring relief from the scorching heat. Well, the best part of this story is that it seems her fervent words finally reached the clouds; for "over rooftops, past chimneys, into the way off distance . . . clouds came rolling in." As soon as Tess realizes that her wish for rain was on the way, she quickly gathers her close friends together (and their mothers too) to run, dance and play in the wonderful rain showers that fall upon the city.Read more

It is Yoko's first day at school, so of course her mother wants to sendher off with healthy comfort food for lunch--a delectable package of homemade sushi. "Have a wonderful day at school, my Little Cherry Blossom,"her mother says as Yoko climbs into the bus. And it would have been, had it not been for lunchtime. Timothy brings a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Tulip has Swiss cheese on rye. The Franks brothers have beans and franks. Butwhen Yoko opens her cooler of rice rolls with "the crispiest cucumber, the pinkest shrimp, the greenest seaweed, and the tastiest tuna," one of the Franks brothers announces, "Ick. It's green. It's seaweed." Tulip and Fritzchime in, "Yuck-o-rama."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You are what you eat...
I teach in a 1st grade in an area with predominately Spanish/Mexican students with Filipino and Samoan children, and poor children...kids caught up in new lives in America and old cultures going back and forth into and out of places and designations...in the melting pot. So I like to use books, literature, to bring forums for child discussion of the differences and uniqueness that we blend in our room and that might exist beyond our walls and down the highway in an area where affluence is securing real estate and isolation and America's different kinds of mixes.... Plus this last year we were trained to understand our teacher role is "to unwind the dominate culture, or registers of language of the dominate cultures teaching explicitly the registers of"language of the disciplines" so that the class experiences are understood by all"...well you can read Ruby Paine on poverty for what we were trained to do...mostly get info to kids who might be isolated from mainstream or "educated" constructs or contexts is my take on it..... Anyway I like to try new things and experiences with kids I teach. I am a doing kind of teacher so I do things with students... ,1st graders they are thinking, filtering , processing every expereince and adding it to their little selves. So of course having raised three of the pickiest eaters on the planet one of my joys is food in the classroom.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cute Read
This is the charming story of a sushi-eating cat, Yoko, who struggles to find acceptance from her classmates after eating her favorite food for lunch.Yoko's teacher arrives at a clever solution for encouraging acceptance of her students' culinary diversity, and Yoko finds a friend. The book is well-illustrated and a cute read for a three-year-old.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Yoko
My daughter is 3 and this is her current favorite book. The story is simple and sweet with some unexpected twists and the illustrations are beautiful. I think it's a good lesson in being open-minded and trying new things, which is perfect for a preschooler. It even has her excited about trying sushi. ... Read more
