5-0 out of 5 stars If I could give more than 5 stars......
This is a wonderful African tale of a crocodile family and a hunterman. The story allows for children to really evaluate the way that man treats other beings and it teaches a lesson, of humility, graciousness, love and irony.Alot for a little book, huh? I love it and my son loves it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentchildren's book with beautiful drawings
The author is a superb artist. I have been collecting this Africanartist's one of kind ceramics for a number of years so I was excited tofind that he wrote and illustrated a book.My seven year old son lovesthis book. His first grade teacher read the book in class when they werestudying the folk stories of the world. The drawings in the book are worththe price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I read the book in my classroom then saw it come to life!
I loved this book! One day an author named Baba Wague Diakite came to our school to talk about his book "The Hunterman and the Crocodile."Each classroom got a copy of the book which I read.Soon I discovered that the story was going to be performed as part of the first school play of the year! Even though my class wasn't in it I got to meet Baba-Wague while working on the set since he lives right down the street from my school! And though I had to see it performed four times( because I was asked to do sound) I never got tired of hearing the same same story.I guess seeing "The Hunterman and the Crocodile" come to life gave the meaning of the story even more meaning.I would reccomend this book to anyone of any age. ... Editorial Review

Ginger has a problem. Having lived the luxurious life of a pampered cat, complete with hand-prepared special meals and his own basket, he's suddenly confronted with a kitten in the house. Ginger watches with utter feline disapproval as the kitten leaps out from behind doors, eats his food, and, in a show of phenomenal gall, climbs into Ginger's beautiful basket. Because the little girl who pampers him makes no signs of taking the frenetic little fur ball away, Ginger has no choice but to leave home. The girl retrieves an angry, cold Ginger from under a bush and sadly concludes that the two cats will never be companions. A delightful surprise ending lets us know that there is hope for these two becoming furry friends after all. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book - a review of "Ginger"
Here is another good book by Charlotte Voake, a woman who obviously knows something about cats.
5-0 out of 5 stars For The Child Who Loves Cats (Not Just About New Siblings)
This is a book about Ginger, a lovely orange tabby who belongs to a little girl who loves him. However, she rocks Ginger's world by bringing home a new kitten, who wants to play with Ginger, eat his food, sleep in his basket, etc.Ginger takes the slightly implausible way out of going and hiding in the garden in the rain (behind the refrigerator is more like it.)But all's well that end's well, with everyone friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
I got this book for my daughter after I read it at my job with autistic children. My child loved it, and I even took it to her school and read it to her class. The only problem I have with it is it includes the word "stupid", which I replace with "silly" when I read it to my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't want to lose this book!!!
Oh No! It is a tragic day in the house when the main character (she does not have a name) cannot find her precious Bearsy. She turns to her mother for help with no luck, she sets out to retrace her steps. When she does not find it, she turns to her dad. Her dad is busy reading a paper and tells her to start figuring out where she puts things. So then, she turns to her sister who yells at her to leave her alone. After a moment of throwing a tantrum, she stops herself. She turns to sister again who gives her an idea of how to find her bear. Will she find her bear or be doomed to go to sleep without it? You'll have to read the book to find out if she does.2-0 out of 5 stars Good premise, question tactics
Although my daughters asked to read this book more than once when we took it out from the library, I questioned the wording in some parts. If you, like myself encourage not using hurtful words like stupid and I'll kill you, you might find yourself revising those sections while reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, breath-taking
The illustrations in this book are so beautiful, words can not explain. It is a simple read that introduces the little ones to poetry. Most poems are excerpts of a stanza or a few lines and the picture corresponds to the poem. Each poem either starts with the letter of the letter is bold in the poem and ties in the picture. For example, F=freedom, but the poem's first letter is not F, so F is bold in the word freedom. Highly recommended for the entire family.

Editorial Review

When children give voice to their own feelings, the result can be magical. This touching and inspiring collection of poems by African-American children helps prove that point.Edited by Davida Adedjouma and lovingly illustrated by Gregory Christie, these 20 poems came out of a series of writing workshops with children who were encouraged to celebrate their lives, joys, influences and hopes. The results are pure poetry, honest, wise and encouraging: "Black is the color of some people/but people are different/differences are good because/no one else says the/same things as you." Not only will children find the poems interesting, they may just be inspired to explore their own feelings. All ages. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful in its simplicity
I saw that an earlier reviewer criticized the illustrations in this book as "overly simplistic" and lacking in cleverness.I had to write in myself, because I believe Circle Dogs is one of the most perfectly illustrated children's books in years. The pictures are simple, to be sure, but absolutely brilliant! It takes tremendous artistic sophistication to conjure up a whole world with a few simple shapes and colors.Yaccarino's illustrations draw you into a child's-eye miracle world of shapes and sounds, yaps and slurps and whirlwind motion. And toddlers are utterly entranced.I'm buying another copy to give as a gift right now! ... Fasten your seatbelts! Get ready for a wild and wonderful, rollicking romp about a telephone ringing off the hook. As we plunge into the story, our narrator (who apparently runs a bizarre, 24-hour, all-purpose supply house) has just answered a call from an elephant: "What do you want?"/I asked him up front./"If I had my druthers,"/he said in a mutter,/"I'd order some more of your peanut butter." The flood of outrageous phone requests continues, including a crocodile needing galoshes, baboons asking for spoons, and a kangaroo looking for Winnie-the-Pooh. The final affront occurs just as the overworked narrator is drifting off to sleep, when a desperate rhino calls for assistance in dragging a hippo out of a swamp. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meanwhile, Jules Feiffer writes another winner...
Those of you who are long-ago fans of the wit of Feiffer's Phantom Tollbooth will be charmed by this picture book about young Raymond, who gets out of chores, perils with pirates, mountain lions, and Martians by writing out the magic word "MEANWHILE...," thus zipping himself instantaneously into a new story. 5-0 out of 5 stars Jules Feiffer strikes again
Jules Feiffer's "Meanwhile" is another great example of his feverish, wonderful brain at work."Meanwhile" looks at the life of Raymond, a young boy who just WANTS TO FINISH READING HIS COMIC BOOK, FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD!But no, his mother is calling him to do a chore and Raymond mutters, "It's not fair!" and then realizes that he can "meanwhile . . . " out of his life just like his comic book heroes do.Raymond zigs and zags around from one adventure to the next, always depending on "meanwhile . . . " to get him out of increasingly dangerous scrapes (it's hilarious to see the lengths he goes to to "meanwhile" in different situations).5-0 out of 5 stars This book was GREAT!
I really liked this book! It is about a kid who writes meanwhile on the wall and when his mother calls him, he thinks to himself It's not fair. When ever he writes "MEANWHILE", he ends up in a toattly diffrentplace, from a pirate ship to the wild west. But when the kid (Raymond)comes back to the pirate ship, he doesn't have time to write"MEANWHILE" And meats his doom. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Joe Capri is mighty old. He is creaky and wrinkly. One night he wisheson a star--"a wish that was older than he was." He wished he were young again. The next morning, while shaving, he laments that he is still old. But just as he sits down to eat breakfast, a strange, purple Something or Other appears. It has the most wonderful red hair, 379 teeth, beady eyes, a spiked tail, and some sort of problem with leakage. It dances badly, sings horribly off-key, but tells Joe that his wish will be granted... tomorrow. Boy, is Joe happy about that! His imagination goes wild with the opportunities that restored youth will bring--so he hops on a bus and takes it all the way across town to his grandson Michael's house to share his good fortune. "Grandpapa!" his grandson exclaims happily. "Computer boy!" Joe answers back. He breaks his big news of impending youth, and they laugh themselves silly at the thought that by the very next day they could be in the same class. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful no matter WHAT age you feel you are
Proimos is the best kept secret in the picture book world. His scribbley, exaggerated cartoon illustrations might bring Callahan to mind in older readers (or Pelswick in younger readers)...but this story is timeless. Joe wishes he were younger, but after a day with his grandson he wants to change his wish--to just have more days with his grandson. Heartwarming and out-of-left-field silly. It doesn't get better than this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a lovely book
There are so many elements that make this a truly lovely book.My daughter and I love Giselle Potter's illustration and when she is teamed with Candace Fleming they make the perfect combination. The storyline is original and interesting with Gabriella finding music in the sounds of everyday life. Her relationship with the people she meets each day and particularly her mother are loving, warm and sweet. And I really appreciate how Gabriella and her friends all have something to contribute and the composer takes their musicality and incorporates into his symphony - and they are thrilled! The language and repetition Fleming uses to describe the musical sounds of the neighbourhood are instantly recognisable and stimulating, encouraging little people to find their own "songs". The illustrations are divine - the colours so conjure up the light and antiquity of Italy and I find the rounded faces and bodies of Potter's Gabriella so appealing.Highly recommended, particularly for those parents and children who find pleasure in music and the gentle side of life.As with Agnes Caws this book provides an endearing and strong young girl heroine, interested in creativity, people and her environment.

This is such an enchanting, smart and magic little book. It has all the elements I look for in a book for the kids I read to.Through it kids can learn about another city (a quite a wonderful one at that), the power of music and the charm and love commen people of a town can provide for each other.I haveread a lot of kids books and this one is really, really special.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!
(...) this book was so cool. My teacher used to be a 3rd grade teacher so she has a lot of kid books. My friend and I were looking for a book and we found this one. We loved the kid in the big space suit. It was hilarious. So now almost every time at reading time we look for that book and we find it better and better each time. This book is so cool especially if you're in for a funny and short book. Even older kids who have a humorous side to them will enjoy this book.

Even the most educated marine biologist could learn something from this whimsical, beautifully illustrated collection of 21 poems about sea life. Some of the poems are pure silly fun ("There are uglier fish than a blennie-- / But not many."), and others are gracefully infiltrated with animal facts ("Did you know the ocean's oysters / Sometimes change from girls to boysters?"). 5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood classic
Thank God I bought this book before it went out of print. This was without a doubt one of my favorite books as a child. Never since has a book's illustrations so deftly captured the feel and character of the story. It is a book every child should experience and every adult should appreciate.

Editorial Review

Anyone who's ever fumbled and stumbled while everyone else is gracefully gliding knows exactly how Mr. Bumble feels. This poor bumblebee can't land on a flower without tumbling head over wings. All the other bees busily gather buckets of pollen for the Queen Bee, but Mr. Bumble comes back empty-handed every time. Fed up, the Queen fusses at him: "Dents are all you seem to gather!" One day, the Queen announces the discovery of a brand-new clover patch, dripping with golden pollen dust. She sends her minions on their way, but Mr. Bumble, as usual, lags behind. What if someone mean lives there, he wonders nervously. And someone does live in the new clover patch, but not anyone Mr. Bumble could have imagined. Charming Mr. Bumble, though different from his peers, shows that even those who have a little more difficulty in life can overcome obstacles (especially if there's a fairy or two on hand) and "learn to fly." The Kennedy siblings, unlike their winged creation, never bumble. Doug Kennedy's pictures of Her Majesty's hive and lush flower-jungles glow with a golden light. The duo's lesson is clear: work hard and be patient; victory will be sweet as honey. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

Editorial Review

Anna needs a little attention. There's a new baby in the house, andshe's found it takes considerably more effort to get noticed these days. One night she dreams she is a bird, but when she wakes up, she isn't. "I could be a bird, said Anna. I could be. And she flapped her wings." She proceeds to transform herself into an amazing variety of species with the help of her trusty plaid bathrobe. She drapes it over her head and trundles to breakfast as a bear, growling. "A bear is too small, said Anna. No one notices a bear. I'll be an elephant." After eliminating a dinosaur (not cuddly enough) and a rabbit (too quiet) as possibilities, she finally decides to be a lion, because a lion can play, and hide, and roar... and more. At the end of the book, the whole family (including the new baby) cozies up for story hour. "Would they love a lion? Yes, they'd all love a lion." Kady MacDonald Denton's ebullient, color-splashed illustrations--especially the faces of Anna and her family--are reminiscent of Maurice Sendak's work. The bulky forms that her bathrobe assumes are perfectly, humorously evocative of the animals she's pretending to be--and every page is a delight. Kids will adore discerning the animal shapes in the bathrobe, the idea of pretending to be different creatures, and of course, the warm reassurance that Anna is loved after all. This wonderful, whimsical read-aloud belongs on every child's bookshelf. (Ages 3 to 5) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The class was captivated by the story and illustrations.
The third grade class I shared this book with sat on the edge of their seats. The author was very careful to define the spanish vocabulary used right after in the next line. It was great to graphically map out usingimaginary verses a real horse having the children site examples. Thefolktale was quickly identified by the children. They compared it to othersthey had shared or read at home or school. Great for compare and contrastconcepts! The illustrations were wonderful and vivid! My third gradedaughter couldn't put it down until she was finished. ... Read more
