Editorial Review

The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter LOVES this book
I actually surprisingly just bought this book earlier today and my almost 17 month old daughter already loves it.She loves the rhythm of the words and the large colorful animals. She like the fact that she is familiar with all the animals and can tell me what noise they make. I purchased the board book because she like to turn the pages on her own and I didn't want the book to be messed up.All in all. . . NO REGRETS

This is the first book that my daughter and I read every night. She points out the different animals when I read.It is a great book that teaches colors and animals.I recommend this book to every parent as first reading material with your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars friendship
This is one of my favorite children's books. It reminds me that friendship is something to value and savor for every moment, and is not something to take for granted. Just as Corduroy was doing everything in his power to find his lost butten so he would be wanted, the little girl was saving her money to have companionship from Corduroy.

Editorial Review

Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who--try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey's classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity--not to mention appetite--of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Little Story
I purchased this book to read to my baby and it is just a sweet little tale about Mommies and their mischievious babies.I can't wait until she is old enough to sit on my lap and really understand the story when I read it to her.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an Oldie but a Goldie!
My kindergarten teacher had also read this book to me and now I'm reading it to my kids, but really to my son because he's 4 and my daughter is 8. She listens to it when it comes time for me to read it to him because she would find it amusing. Blueberries for Sal preserve a distinct since of life when tin pails and wood smoke, bobby pins and rambling dirt roads were routine. At the same time it is a timeless portrayal of curiosity and maternal instinct as Sal and her mother find themselves sharing their berry patch with a hungry bear cub and its mother. The words flow in a natural rhythm, creating patterns that build anticipation.

When Christopher Robin asks Pooh what he likes doing best in the world, Pooh says, after much thought, "What I like best in the whole world is Me and Piglet going to see You, and You saying 'What about a little something?' and Me saying, 'Well, I shouldn't mind a little something, should you, Piglet,' and it being a hummy sort of day outside, and birds singing."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Winning Book
The tales are lovable, enjoyable and moving, and perhaps the most important thing is that although written for kids, we adults can reflect on the way we live our daily lives. We live through the pages the feelings of all characters fear, amazement, joy, kindness, self-inflicted misery, competitiveness, good times, and most of all, positiveness and passion to enjoy and nature true friendship. We have these feelings and emotions as human beings. There are Rabbits, and Tiggers and Owls and Piglets all around us and we can barely seem to recognize them in our friends or the people we communicate with every day. Illustrations are gorgeous,an outstanding vision of life.

Editorial Review

Children find the story of Goldilocks delightful for so many reasons. There's a trespassing little girl, for starters, who barges into the bears' house uninvited and not only snoops around, but eats the bears' food! The suspense of wondering whether she'll get caught only adds to the thrill of the trespassing itself, and the repeated lines about the three bears with their three distinct voices, bowls, chairs, and beds further endear this tale to the preschool set. Variations on "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" have long entranced children. Whether it is Robert Southey's version from 1837, whether Goldilocks was simply an old woman, or the many modern varieties, the themes are the same: If it isn't yours, don't touch it. 5-0 out of 5 stars MagicalIlustrations
This book has beautiful, magical, fantastical pictures with Jan Brett's typical detail and whimsy. The bear's house is extraordinary.I think it is one of her very best books and goes well with the old-fashioned text.No other version of this story compares.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bravo, Berlioz!
This is a cute little story.Berlioz is late for a concert and having trouble with his double bass to boot (a strange and unwanted buzzing noise accompanies his playing). The bandwagon gets stuck in a pot hole and the draft donkey just won't budge.A series of animals in increasing order of size and strength--from a rooster to an ox--think they are the solution, but all fail to move the donkey. In a surprising twist we discover the source of Berlioz' bass's buzzing and the donkey suddenly finds motivation. As a result, they make it on time and we learn that the ability to effect change does not always depend on size and strength.Very nicely illustrated. Each lavish page is framed with marginal drawings which show you the country folk gathering at the village in preparation for Berlioz' concert. This is a nice touch and heightens the drama. There's something almost Aesopian about this delightful book.Highly recommended; a great bed-time story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Jan Brett Favourite
My 5 year-old daughter loves this book. Not only are the illustrations fascinating and detailed as in all of Brett's books, but the story is very charming and funny. The surprise ending will make you and your child giggle for certain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whimiscal and lovely book!
This is another fun book that my toddlers love to read ~~ ok, have mom read to them. This one is fun to read ~~ with a band of traveling bears. They are getting ready to play at a ball in a nearby town when their wagon hits a hole in the ground and a wheel gets stuck ~~ then their donkey decides to sit. A bunch of animals offer to help but none of them were strong enough to get the wagon of bears out of the hole. Till an angry bumblebee flies out of one of the instruments and stings the donkey into action.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful storybook of poems
The more my daughter and I read this book, the more we liked it! Jane Dyer's illustrations are beautifully detailed--who would have imagined the bears living in such an ornate little house! Apparently Goldi and the bears have become friends because they share photographs, go to each other's parties, and compare gardens.Children can relate to baby bear's feelings that he is "Too Old for Naps," his fears "In the Night," and his opinion that Daddy's lap makes the best chair at all. This is a wonderful book to read aloud to your child at bedtime--or anytime. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ein sehr gut kindergeschicht.
This book provides an excellent segue into the introduction of another language for a child. The story is basically clear through the illustrations, which are fantastic, and after reading this a few times, words and phrases will begin to click along with those pictures. The story itself is very warm and endears itself immediately to the reader as it conveys the importance of exploration while still admitting that there is no warmth like that of one's own home.Even if that home is in the icy clime of the North Pole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahoy There Little Polar Bear
"Ahoy There Little Polar Bear" is a story about a polar bear named Lars who lives in the north pole. One day, Lars swam out too far in the water and got his foot stuck in something. It was a net and it reeled him up and onto a fishing boat.Onboard, he met Nemo, the ship's cat.Nemo was willing to help Lars get back to the north pole, so when the ship docked at the next port, Nemo took Lars to see some other cats. They decided that Lars should get on one of the ships that was leaving for the north pole the next day.So they sneaked Lars onboard early the next day and soon Lars was back in his home at the north pole.3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, But the Truth is, They Didn`t Like it Much
We still love LITTLE POLAR BEAR, the first book, but this just does not compare!Maybe at five and seven, cute is just not enough for my sons. The environmental message with the garbage strewn port is a point well taken, but LITTLE POLAR BEAR with all the different animals from a warmer climate he meets for the first time was far more interesting.According to my two, "this only had Lars, cats, and dead fish."The illustrations are cute, but the story was a little too simple and unexceptional-- no drama. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable Eye Closer
When my little one was even littler, Let's Go Home, Little Bear was the one sure-fire put-to-sleeper on her bookshelf. The gentle, soothing rhythm of the text combined with soft illustrations to slowly, slowly, slowly drop the eyelids.By the time Little Bear got all snuggly back at home, my own little bear was inevitably down for the evening.
5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot go wrong with this book.
This is a cute story about Big Bear and Little Bear.As they are heading home from a walk in the snow, Little Bear becomes concerned that he has heard "plodders", "drippers" and "ploppers". Big Bear points out the source of these noises, and eases Little Bear's mind. This book is cute, funny, comforting, and an easy read. It is a good bedtime length (not too long) book. I think Martin Waddell is a fantastic children's book writer, and I highly recommend this book for children up to 8 or 9.

4-0 out of 5 stars "It's a Lovely Smell...All Dark and Smoky..."
Every child should have a Raymond Briggs book on their bookshelf. Perhaps best known for his wonderful picture book "The Snowman", which is a fantastic book for children, especially ones that cannot yet read (considering it is made up entirely of pictures) "The Bear" is a natural follow-on, once again featuring a young child's interactions with a creature of snowy lands that may or may not be real.

Briggs has a knack for illustration that is simply awe inspiring. The bear in this book is just so big.Kids love to see such a big bear get into the house. He makes a mess of the bed and the bathroom, he dirties the floor which has to be cleaned up (good introduction to pets for children) and all the while the adults keep missing him. They just cannot manage to catch a glimpse of this huge bear wandering around their house.5-0 out of 5 stars The Bear

It's the bear is a frequent read in my home. All my children, ages 7 to 2, love the bear who is just as afraid of little Eddie as Eddie is of him.Infact, my (almost) 4 year old chose a teddy bear picnic theme for his birthday based on this book.A copy for each child attending made a wonderful gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars YUM YUM!
"It's the Bear" is a fun book to read aloud to young children. It's simply written, in near-rhyme, with lots of opportunity for the reader to whimper, yell, growl, and sniff. My son loves to holler some of the lines along with me. The drawings are great, with an absolutely oversized bear grasping a huge teddy bear of his own, and eating a bite-sized picnic that he stumbles upon. Read more
