5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Has Been Special To Generations Of Children
Strange in a way that I loved this book so much when I read it in fourth grade, because, ironically, in real life, horses kind of scare me. I think Walter Farley's book is magical and I hope others who read it find as much meaning as I did in the story of a boy named Alec Ramsey, who survives a shipwreck and befriends a magnificent black Arabian stallion. Yes, this enduring classic is basically a fantasy, but sometimes it takes fantasy to create a book that is capable of touching the human soul in the exact way this one does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality of the Black Stallion
I greatly enjoyed this book when I was younger, and I still like it. However, in recent years I have come to realize how prejudicially obsessed Walter Farley was about Arabians. Even in his book The Great Dane Thor, the horses only briefly mentioned in the book were Arabians. He didn't seem to realize that there were other breeds in the world. For instance, he had the Black's daughter, Black Minx run in the Kentucky Derby--a race exclusively limited to Thoroughbreds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hast thou clothed the horse's neck with thunder?
I reread "Thunderhead" after a hiatus of forty years, and was surprised that I enjoyed it even more as an adult.I had to wonder how I made it through the parts about Rob and Nell's financial difficulties and rocky marriage when I was a teen-ager, but I know I read them because I can still remember details and characters after all these years.
4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I loved THUNDERHEAD. It is powerful and moving, and Ken matured a lot! Thunderhead is such a wild, hideous colt in the beginning, but he turns into a handsome colt--and grows wilder. Ken fears he won't be a racer. Thunderhead is always escaping to dominate a herd of wild mares. He fights with the legendary Albino and becomes strong and fierce. The ending is..a surprise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprise! A clinical description
I am in the middle of lstening to this book. Its detailed descriptions of ranch life and horses are quite compelling. But what surprised me was the absolutely accurate description of a boy with ADD. This book was written some two decades before attention deficit disorder gained anyone's attention, but O'Hara's descriptions of Ken's behavior are absolutely consistent.
5-0 out of 5 stars A COMMANDING NARRATION OF A CLASSIC

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!
On the Goose Bar Ranch in Wyoming, between the World Wars, former Army captain Rob McLaughlin and his Eastern blue-blood wife, Nell, are raising two sons and an ever-growing herd of thoroughbred horses. Rob, a stern but loving father, doesn't know what to do with younger son Ken. The boy daydreams constantly, and for that reason just failed to be promoted at his boarding school. Why should Rob give small Ken a colt of his own, as he already has older son Howard, when Ken can't do anything that demonstrates he's responsible enough to be trusted? Yet a colt is what Ken wants more than anything else in the world. Until he finds out what happens to male horses when they're two years old - after which he decides he'd rather have a filly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
I had to read this in school as a kid. The actual writing talent here is great but the subject matter is really depressing. I think a good story should have a nice balance of good/bad events. Steinbeck has none of that in this book. The Red Pony is just one dark cloud of doom throghout the entire book. Things go from bad to worse as the little boy's dreams are shattered. Some parts of it are also needlessly gross and bloody and I must admit that as a kid I was a little emotionally scarred from it! The book goes ubruptly to a totally different and unrelated story. As an adult I know it's meant to serve as some sort of metaphor but I still don't like this book and think it's a pointless read unless you want to be depressed or have a thing for tragic stories. I know it's supposed to be a classic, the problem is I don't know WHY! Some readers say "this is a great book for readers of all ages" but I would have to disagree! I don't think this is a kids book. I don't think kids should be forced to read this at school and I don't think I would ever read it again.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Red Pony
I did not choose to read this book... my great-grandmother gave it to me for christmas years ago and I knew I should read it sooner or later. So I read it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories, well written, beautiful prose
I must be one of the only people in America who didn't have to read The Red Pony in school. Actually, I didn't read any Steinbeck in school, which is a shame. His prose is so easy to digest; he's the un-Faulkner. The major themes (responsibility, imagination, innocence, compassion begetting violent tragedy) are readily announced in colorful, vivid stories. Each story is really beautiful in a haunting kind of way. The Red Pony is not as disturbing as Of Mice and Men or The Grapes of Wrath, but there are no glorious happy endings either. The book is easy to finish in a few sittings or less; I recommend it highly for readers of any age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As Great As The Last
This mysterious and enchanting book takes Alec and Henry to a setting far from the one in the previous book. In the barren deserts of Arabia, they search for their black stallion in his own home. A thrilling tale of survival, and just as vivid, with a race for high stakes and a horse to beat any of the same caliber all thrown in too make the story plot thicken.

This book was EXCELLENT!! I love it!
5-0 out of 5 stars In My Opinion, one of Walter Farley's Best !!
I was able to enjoy this book immensely! The details Walter Farley gave were incredible. You didn't miss a thing! You always knew everything that was going on with Man O' War. There wasn't too much detail either. It wasn't 350 pages of blah. In this book you were able to live through all of the races, dissapointment, and momentous occasions of Man O' War and his stable hand Danny. Danny was a loyal young man who more than anything wanted to be with his horse Man O' War. Any horse lover who has a special horse close to their heart or just loves horses in general will be able to relate to Danny's love for Man O' War!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just bought for my 50 yr old husband-
After all these years, my husband, John still talks about his love of this book. I just ordered the original Billy & Blaze in paperback (collectible) as a Valentine's gift for him. I can't wait to receive it and present it to him on our vacation. It's a 4th pressing of the original, but honestly - - I don't think he would care if it were the 104th. I believe we own our horses still to this day because of this book being in his childhood. How precious is that?Love you darling... Can't wait to see your face! Your K10

5-0 out of 5 stars Hoofs and Wheels
While women generally ride for pleasure to feel the wind and the movement of the horse beneath, a boys ride is different in that it is the power and speed of the ride that are most dear to him in these chariots of fire, the roar of the engine, the hoofs and the noise of the wheels that inspire their thrill. Boys tend to drive either their horses or their cars to see the height of their power, and whether the beauty of black or the silver shine of white, the joy of the command lies in the skill of the rider and the knowledge of his horse, or his engine, a sight that most can appreciate, understand, and admire.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review: King of the Wind
King of the Wind is a great book by Marguerite Henry. It is about a mute boy named Agba and his horse Sham.Agba goes with Sham on many adventures together.Agba goes with Sham from the royal stables in Morocco to Gog Magog.Sham also sires many winning foals and when he is gone, Agba goes back to Morocco.
3-0 out of 5 stars good for it's directed age range
King of the Wind is a good story, and you are hearing that from someone with an aversion to horse stories. The book is about Sham, an Arabian horse and the stable boy who cares for him, Agba. When the sultan decides to send some horses to France as a gift Sham is chosen and Agba is sent with him. They are rejected because of size and Sham is given to the kitchen guy. From there he has some bad luck, them some good luck. Then sire the greasiest race horses ever.
5-0 out of 5 stars Late Childhood Should Always Include Books This Special
The Christmas I was nine, I got a boxed set of Marguerite Henry novels and while I loved all of them and read them day and night during the break from school, I think this one goes down as my favorite. A few years after I first read this novel, my family moved and I discovered it was also, by a nice coincidence, one of the favorite books of a girl I met in our new neighborhood, who went on to be my best friend to this very day. That connection, too, makes this a special read. However you might come to possess this wonderful book, I think you'll agree, it's one to be cherished.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
All of the Walter Farley books are excellent for young people interested in horses.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice story, but a unbelievable
I mean, think about this. The son of the black stallion - Satan - is so terrible at the beginning of the book that Henry doesn't want him around Alec. Henry sees something in the colt's stony gaze that makes him think that this horse is a demon, worse than his sire. Alec doesn't believe him, thinking that 'oh, this is my horse, he'll fall in love with me like the Black did'. The thing is, it doesn't work that way. And even after the horse is saved by Alec, he shouldn't all of a sudden act like he trusts the boy. If anything, in my experience with horses, the animal would be much more skittish than ever with someone connected to that event. Henry in particular, yes, but Alec too since he was around. Anywho, read the book. It's good beside that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly A Well-Written Successor To The First Two
To tell you the truth, when I picked up this book, I didn't think that it was going to be as good as the first two were. But then I got into it, and realized how much lies in this story. It is very much complex, so I am surprised that it would be designated as a kid story, for though I may be a teen, I am a huge fan of Farley's work. There's so much story here. And it's simply amazing. This story tells of a son of The Black, who's given to Alec Ramsay for taking care of his father. But Satan, as he is named, turns out to be a wild killer, just like his father was before he met Alec. This horse had to go through a desperate situation that kept me guessing until the end, and the rage, but how he seemed to really try to make an effort to stop himself, clearly demonstrates the battle between good and evil in one creature's heart. That is one of the things that I think Farley is trying to tell us in this great book of the series. I doubted that I would enjoy it as I started it, but it is one of the greatest books of the series. Farley did another superb job with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blaze and the Gray Spotted Pony
The is the BEST of the charming and beautiful Billy and Blaze series by CW Anderson. Billy gets a human friend this time, who loves horses as much as Billy does. This friend wants a gray spotted pony for his birthday--Billy and Blaze have to go FIND him one. It's a hackneyed plot (no pun intended, Hackney lovers) but it is done right without any silliness. But this is a Billy and Blaze book, and any collector of them know the REAL reason to buy a Billy and Blaze book are for the amazing CW Anderson pencil drawings! It is amazing to see, over the course of the series, how much this man had improved as one of the top equine artists of this country and he is sorely missed. This is a great book to read as a stress-reliever for pony loving adults, or a bedtime story for children ... Read more

I couldn't put it down! So fast-paced I was finished in a jiffy! This story is about a small colt that no one thought was worth anything because of his tiny size. When he grew up he became known for his strength and quickness. True story about how the race of Morgan horses started!

"Justin Morgan Had a Horse," by Marguerite Henry is a book with three main characters: Justin Morgan, Joel Goss, and Little Bub.One day when Joel was a small boy, he was with Justin Morgan, a Vermont schoolmaster, at a farm in Springfield, Illinois. The owner of the farm, Farmer Beane had borrowed money from schoolmaster Justin Morgan, and the reason Morgan was there was to collect the money.Farmer Beane, who didn't yet have the money, offered Morgan two horses:Ebenezer, a large horse; and Little Bub, a small colt. When Joel and Justin Morgan got back to thier home in Vermont, Morgan sold Ebenezer, and let Joel break in Little Bub.One day a man wanted to rent Little Bub, and Morgan accepted.Little Bub worked hard for the man, and when the lease ended, Morgan rode Little Bub throughout Vermont on a singing circuit. But one day a sad thing happened.Joel received a letter telling that Justin Morgan was very sick and is going to die! After Justin Morgan died nobody knew where Little Bub went!Until one day...well...I'll let you find out by reading the story!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.
This is a special book to me, as it was the book upon which my son's first book report was written about a dozen years ago. It was also the last time he needed my collaboration on a school project.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story for Boys
My son (4 next week) wanted some "Wild, Wild West" stories.I found the wonderful books by C.W. Anderson in the library.I bought several of the reprints in paperback because he loves the stories so.Thegentle adventures of Billy and his pony Blaze are a wonderful way for youngboys to learn the virtues of loyalty and friendship and the love ofanimals. In this book Billy and Blaze spend a day looking for a forgottenquarry. They have a few adventures trying to get over the overgrown trail. The quarry is as wonderful as Billy pictured. He gets a bonus - he findsa puppy running from a fox.Billy and Blaze take their new friend home. The realistic pen and ink drawings illustrating the story are very muchenjoyed by my son.I'm happy to have found these books reprinted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blaze andthe Forest Fire
We have read most of the Billy and Blaze books and this is our favourite. Two reasons: 1) This book shows the most exciting riding scenes, and 2) This book shows Billy and Blaze at their bravest moment. We also recommend Blaze Shows the Way; again for the dramatic riding scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Blaze book
My 7 yo son loves the Billy and Blaze series. This series is an excellent one for boys.Even if you don't think they have an interest in horses.5-0 out of 5 stars Blaze and the Forrest Fire
I like Billy and Blaze books and I like what happened in that book Blaze and the Forrest fire and it said in the book that Billy's dog Rex goes with them on rides and one day he's sick. Billy and Blaze is about a boy and his pony who race to the forest fire to set and speeed the alarm. But one day he was sick? It reminds me of Paul Brandt's CD Calm Before The Storm. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrator of Black Stallion series
I am searching for the early printings of the Black Stallion series. My uncle, James Schucker was the illustrator of some of those books, and I would like to obtain copies of some of them. Please contact me: Barbara Schucker Marquardt: barbmarq@comcast.net

5-0 out of 5 stars Exotic locale, adventure, horses, FANTASTIC
I loved this book as much if not more than the BLACK STALLION.I loved it so much that I could not bear to read the titles featuring 'BLACK STALLION MEETS FLAME" where my two favorite horses would be pitted against each other. It was an unfair pairing.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Novel
This book is just as well-written as the black stallion series. Flame, a wild red horse young Steve Duncan thinks only exists in his dreams, is actually a real horse living in the confines of mysterious Azul Island, where he and his friend Pitch are camping. It takes a lot of critical thinking skills, physical strength and courage to finally get their way into the interior of the island. While they almost become lost in a series of caverns with many hidden treasures and burial grounds, they find Flame and his herd in a very vivid, lush valley. But when Flame loses his herd and almost his life to a challeging piebald stallion, it becomes a matter that Steve must see to that his majestic friend kills the piebald and regains his herd. This amazing novel contains suspense, adventure, mystery, and excitement. The pictures that are so clear to the reader that Farley can put in your head through his words is spell-binding. I must once again applaud Farley for this well-put together piece of literature known none other than 'The Island Stallion'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!
I can't believe I found it! This was one of my favorite books from when I was in kindergarten. I remember it well. I'm buying it for my 6-year-old daughter tonight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calico to the Rescue.....
"Way out west in Cactus County there was a horse named Calico. She wasn't very pretty...but she was very smart. She was the smartest fastest horse in all of Cactus County." She could run like "greased lightning", and she could smell like a bloodhound."Her nose was so keen she could track a bee through a blizzard."She was owned by a cowboy named Hank, and "...she would go to the end of the trail for Hank. They had a language all their own and understood each other perfectly."Life was good and happy for everyone who lived in Cactus County, no locks, no fences, and no sheriff or jail. But across the Cactus River were the Badlands where the villains of this story lived. And the meanest, sneakiest, absolutely worst bad man of them all was Stewy Stinker. He was so mean, "he would hold up Santa Claus on Christmas Eve if he had a chance."So sit back and get comfortable and see what happened when Stewy Stinker and his nasty gang came to town.....First published in 1941, Calico The Wonder Horse is as fresh and entertaining today, as it was over fifty years ago. This is an old fashioned, action packed, rootin' tootin' western that has it all...cattle rustling, hold-ups, a stampede and kidnapping, a wild and thrilling stagecoach chase, and through it all, Calico comes to the rescue, outsmarts the bad guys and saves the day.Virginia Lee Burton's clever, witty text is dramatic, engaging and full of wild west colloquialisms that will have both kids and adults laughing and cheering at all the fun.Her marvelous comic strip illustrations are expressive and full of detail and beg to be pored over and explored.Put it all together and you have the makings of a timeless classic to share with friends, family and future generations.Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Calico The Wonder Horse is a masterpiece and a MUST for every home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Could Not LOVE This One???
The illustrations of this Wild West comedy saga are just as good as the lively and creative prose.Easy to read in one sitting as a great "before bed" story. The adventure and humor will keep even those with short attention spans listening intently. The ending is perfect! ... Read more
