    Editorial Review

Imagine all the happiness and wealth you could achieve if you found a magic pebble that granted your every wish! Sylvester Duncan, an unassuming donkey who collects pebbles "of unusual shape and color," experiences just such a lucky find. But before he can make all his wishes come true, the young donkey unexpectedly encounters a mean-looking lion. Startled, Sylvester wishes he were a rock, but in mineral form he can no longer hold the pebble, and thus cannot wish himself back to his equine trappings. His parents, thinking he has disappeared, are at first frantic, then miserable, and then plunge into donkey ennui. Meanwhile, Sylvester is gravely depressed, but tries to get used to being a rock.Read more

    Editorial Review

Doctor De Soto is a well-respected mouse-dentist who runs a successful practice with his wife (and able assistant) Mrs. De Soto. The De Sotos are friendly and professional toward all their patients, from chipmunks to donkeys to cows, the exception being "cats and other dangerous animals," as stated clearly on the sign outside the office. But the De Sotos are tender-hearted rodents, so when a miserable fox shows up begging for treatment, they agree to have a look (perhaps against their better judgment). As it turns out, this fox, with "a rotten bicuspid and unusually bad breath," manages to behave himself while tiny Doctor De Soto is standing mid-molar inside his gaping jaws. When the wily fox returns the next day to get his replacement gold tooth, however, he has mouse-flavored snacks on his mind. Luckily, Doctor De Soto and his wife have anticipated such despicable canine intentions, and find a way to outfox the ungrateful fox. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Doctor DeSoto book
You can call me StoryMaker. "Doctor DeSoto" is not my favorite book, and I especially don't like the end. I like how they are animal people, but are the size they are supposed to be. What I mean is, they are animals that talk, walk on 2 legs, and live in their own house, but unlike most people animals, they are the size they are in real life. It would probably be a book a young child would adore (probably most children ages 3-5) but I don't fall into the "Dr. DeSoto lovers" category or the "children ages 3-5" category. This book is where a mouse named Dr. DeSoto (a dentist) finds out a fox is seeking dental care. Dr. DeSoto never let an animal that might eat him come in before (that's where them being the size they are in real life is important), but the fox really wants that dental care so Dr. DeSoto's wife lets him in. The part I hate the most is the end when Dr. DeSoto gives the fox his so-called special treatment so he won't eat them. That so-called special treatment causes the fox to not be able to eat anything, even if it isn't a DeSoto family member at all. He could DIE if it dosen't ware off! I actually don't have a lot of complaints, but this book is not very exciting. Overall, perhaps you may like it, but if you like foxes, this book will not please you. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, critical thinking perspective
Consider things from the point of view of the dentist and his patient . . . you'll be laughing out loud while reading this to your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining story
Dr. Desoto is a humorous well illustrated story of a mouse dentist and how he solved a problem in an unexpected way. I have read this book to several children 5-8 yr. age range and they all loved it and wanted to borrow it. Parents will appreciate Dr, Desoto's desire to maintain his professional integrity. ... One summer day, newlywed mice Abel and Amanda are out for apicnic in the woods when they are caught in a sudden storm--a "full-fledged,screaming hurricane" to be precise. 2-0 out of 5 stars Did not engage my 10-year-old
This was required reading for my son going into fifth grade. He is not a strong reader, and neither he nor I enjoyed it.The combination of a large amount of flowery language and very little action made it a struggle to get through. What little humor there was, was too sophisticated. It was hard for us to identify with this foppish married mouse who ate caviar and champagne. While I can appreciate that many (I guess most!) find it literary and delicious, my son found it boring, and looking at it through his eyes, I have to agree.

1-0 out of 5 stars ... A waste of time
I was forced to read Abel's Island for a school assingment. It was about this mouse on and island. Very boring.... It was miserable to have to read this, so do not waste your time reading it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest fiction book I've read!
Abel's Island is about a mouse named Abel.He encounters a hurricane that separates him from his wife. After the storm, he ends up on an island where he cannot escape because of the current surrounding the island. He tries many ways to return to the place he loves, but all fail.About a year after countless attempts to leave the island, a frog appears by accident. Gover, the frog, becomes friends with Abel and says he will come back with people to help Abel.Abel's plans to return were very interesting. His methods were very creative so it held my attention. My favorite part was when he was fighting the owl.I found a similarity between Abel and Stuart Little. Both had to navigate water. Stuart little was successful, but was Abel?Read the book to find out. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very wordy, disappointing denouement
I saw all the positive reviews here, and bought Amos & Boris to read to my two-year-old. I am often disappointed in aspects of the stories in children's books, and having to read them over and over, stories that my son likes that have endings that bother me can really get to me, so I'm always looking for the good ones.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious and tedious...kids immediately smell it as false
The tedious, self-serving prose in this book reads as though the author loves the sound of his own narative voice WAY too much. His endless, conjunction-addled sentences leave smart kids looking -- aching -- for the POINT. Steig sets up a sweet and caring friendship between a mouse and a whale -- certainly an unlikely pair -- but instead of playing with the natural contrasts there, he overburdens the story with his heavy-handed voice. There is so much focus on despair and helplessness that the story bogs down...and sinks under the weight of Steig's ego.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still loves it
This book came as part of a book club order for my daughter (maybe 15 years ago)... She ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!It was always on the bedtime story request list. She thoroughly enjoyed my reading of it, the journey of Brave Irene, and the completing of her task... To help her mother! She even related the "wicked wind" to our winter storms!Today, she is 23 and still very fondly remembers this book and wants to get it for HER daughter.I am ordering it today!Hopefully, they will enjoy it as much as we did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classroom pleaser
my son's second grade teacher read this to the class when they were comparing "pesky" words vs. "flashy" words and this book is full of GREAT words that second graders need to hear.sure she's a child in a messy situation but that's the deal in fairy tales. it's up to irene to get out of trouble on her own but she does it, in a mighty plucky fashion too!

5-0 out of 5 stars We read it over and over again.
At age three I started reading Brave Irene to my daughter. She is now nine years old and it remains her all time favorite book. Back then we would read it at least tree times a week or more. Still, Now every once in awhile, Annie comes to me and says " can we read Brave Irene together". The story is about a young girl Irene who seems to be maybe nine or ten years old. Her mother is a dressmaker and has made a gown for the dutches for her ball.Unfortunatley her mother isn't feeling to well and can't get the gown to dutches in time for the ball.Irene being a very responsible, carring, and BRAVE child,Wants to help her mom. So she takes the gown to the dutches. She has some problems along the way, But because of her love for her mother, she is determined to get the job done. I feel that there are many lessons this book can teach a child. The main one being,CARRING. Our first copy of this book is so worn out, I recently bought a new one.. ... Read more

Throughout my life, I'd always remembered the "first book I ever read" as about some dog who played the piccolo and traveled around with his possessions in a sack on a stick. I remembered it so fondly, like one of those few, golden memories you hold onto from childhood, when you still believed in the tooth faerie and unicorns.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best children's book ever!
This was the first "real book" I remember reading as a little boy.I suppose I was about 6 or 7.I read and re-read Dominic many times and loved it more each time.I suppose it has be something like 35 years since I first read this book and I still remember it fondly. How many things can you say that about?

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming, funny, a little bit "witchy."
I like that Shrek likes himself for who he is.I like the theme, that there's someone for everybody.I don't especially care for the "evil magic" in it, but it is a very small part of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shrek, the ugliest guy around
When they came along, the moviemakers took a great deal of artistic license. Little of the book remains intact in the movie. The book starts with Shrek's parents hissing things over, and they decide to send Shrek "out in the world [to do] his share of damage". Shortly after he leaves home, Shrek meets with a witch who tells him his fortune in exchange for a few of Shrek's lice. Shrek is told that he will wed a princess who is even uglier than he, and is overjoyed at the news. On his way to the princess, Shrek meets a peasant, confronts thunder and lightning, defeats a dragon, has a nightmare of being loved by children, and meets a donkey who takes him to the castle. After defeating a knight he goes and meets his princess. The two get married and live horribly ever after.

He is going to make a pizza out of Pete! The book is very amusing as the dad rolls the dough (Pete) and sprinkles cheese (paper) and tomatoes (checkers) on the pizza. This could be a wonderful game to play with your own children. Loads of fun to be had.

This book was a wonderful experience for my 4th grade class. It demonstrated how one action, no matter what the motive, can affect others around you. My students liked predicting what would happen next and they also liked the "surprise" ending. The story was full of mini lessons that the students didn't mind learning because they were enjoying it so much!4-0 out of 5 stars Review by a fourth-grade boy
This is a story about a goose who gets blamed for stealing treasure which he didn't steal. The best part was when you find out who the real thief is. I might have given it five stars if all the characters were human.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's book I have ever read!!
I am an avid reader and this is the one THE BEST children's book I have read.Great moral and ethical values for a child to learn at an early age.Loyalty, honestly, and integrity are more important than money, and position. Also, when life seems to turn against you, sometimes your friends turn and run also. Can't understand why this book has not become as popular as James and the Giant Peach which was made into a movie and written by the same author. This was far far better and I think should be required reading for every child. Also the words used by the author will probably challenge the average reader and might possibly require a dictionary sometimes to be nearby.Which is not bad either.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great alternative to contemporary hysteria
Reich believed that nothing require our dedication more than an understanding of the impact of the environment on the infant child. In Children of the Future, he shows how disastrous the exclusion of genitality is to the young and how important its influence is on their development. Included here is "The Sexual Rights of Youth" published in a revised form. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The DP Line
When there was great influx of immigration to the USA due to war or crop failures in other countries, these folks became known as "Displaced Persons" or "DPs" (which, I realize, is NOT the politically correct phrase currrently, but it WAS in common usage at the turn of the 20th century) - check out the different costuming in the drawing shown for this caption - they are all people from different nations in their national garb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable!
My four children have enjoyed this book , as well as CDB. I brought both books in to my son's 4th grade "Reading Day" and the whole class participated in the "puzzle-solving" text. They had so much fun with both books!! I highly recommend these books for a fun and interactive read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very clever, but not for all ages
This is a very clever book and it's quite fun reading. However, my 4 year old and I read together all the time and I bought this for him thinking it would be good for him too, but some ofthe picture themes are notinteresting for a small child. This would be good for a 9-10 years +. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A story that transcends time...
I read this story to my son when he was a little tyke. He's now nearly 20. I haven't read the book in years, yet, lately, I've been thinking a lot about Gorky and his travels away from home, up into the "blue, bluesky". Guess it has something to do with my 3 kids all about ready totake off on their own. The prose is marvelous, full of colorful anddescriptive language, the story is beautiful, about the joy and pain ofgrowing up and away, and the illustrations are an added benefit, thoughunnecessary due to the ability of the author to draw wonderful pictureswith his magical use of the English language. Thank you William Steig! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic of the Genre
This is the book I read, over and over, at the demand of my language-infatuated seven-year-old. He may not have understood half the words, but he delighted in their sounds. When he tired of the book I put it on my bedside bookstand, and I still pull it out when I'm in the mood for some inspired, sophisticated nonsense. The best ABC book ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deliciously perverse
Although I bought my eight-year-old girl the book for Christmas, it's headed to my office. It is the funniest book I've read in a long time; my usual reading (teaching) matter is the classics. The Steigs' book is awelcome break, a breath of fresh air after all that high-mindedness andtragedy!Carrotina and her awful cadenza are hilarious, but Naomi,"nervy as a newt" with her "nitwit" parents, is all toorecognizable.I appreciate the tiny moral tales and the deflating ofpompous academics, as in the "exegesis of the sphinx". ... What happens when you feel angry and hurt by your family's stinging words that you tear right out the front door? In many classic children'sstories, the protagonist just keeps on running--setting off on a thrilling, dangerous adventure that turns out to be a cautionary tale about the risks of the great big world and a reinforcement that the only safe place to be is back home with family. I grew up reading William Steig books, and this was one of my all time favorites.Every kid finds him or herself in a bad mood that just gets worse over time. The point of the story, though, is that Spinky gets himself out of his funk.Instead of putting me in a sulky mood, this book always helped me get out of one, because I felt like someone else knew what it was like, too. ... Even a piece of garbage can change your whole life. One morning Zeke Pippin, a young pig, is moseying down the street when a harmonica falls off of a garbage truck, right in front of him. He takes it home, cleans it, and begins to play up a storm. He is a natural, soon regaling his family with the prelude to Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of William Steig's very, very best books for kids
There was a time in my life where I practically had "Zeke Pippin" memorized, start to finish, so enormously popular was it with my young son and daughter.Even to this day, William Steig's superbly offbeat text (he describes harmonica-playing as "zeezling and zoozling" and when a character nods off, he later "nods back on again") is something to behold.1-0 out of 5 stars Innappropriate for the intended age group
This book is not appropriate for 5- to 8-year-olds in either content or context. Zeke, a pig, picks up a harmonica that he sees fall off a garbage truck and cleans it up, "using his father's schnapps as a disinfectant." Zeke then "regales" his his family "with the prelude to La Traviata". DO MOST PARENTS, LET ALONE 2nd GRADERS, KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS? Offended that family members fall asleepto his playing, Zeke leaves home. After putting others to sleep with his "supernatural" playing, Zeke "ponders his remarkable piece of garbage," falls asleep and dreams of his family's "agony" while they are missing him. "If I don't see [Zeke] soon," his mother wails in his dream, "I'll shoot myself." Zeke wakes up, crying, "reviling" himself for having lost faith in his family. He knows he must bring them "surcease of their sorrow" - now honestly, I have a bachelor's degree in journalism and I had to go look up "surcease." COME ON! On his way home, some unsavory characters, called "Samaritans," rob, kidnap, and tie him up, debating how to dispose of him. Drown him? Bake him? "We could have baked ham, ham sandwiches, chitlins, pig's knuckles, et cetera." ET CETERA?? He escapes, but "two nanoseconds later, a death-dealing coyote" pins him to the ground. Zeke plays a song on the harmonica, and "the wretched carnivore is rendered unconscious." Finally home, Zeke is greeted enthusiastically, and smothered with hugs for serenading children and patients to sleep in the Quayhogue (??) Hospital.5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic from Steig
If you normally find yourself nodding off while reading picture books to your kids, try Zeke Pippin. My sons love the part where Zeke "zeezles and zoozles" on his "supernatural mouth organ" and thelanguage keeps them (and me!) on our toes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The magic of making up
In this delightful Steig classic Kate and Caleb argue over something silly. A furious Caleb wanders into the forest and falls asleep under a tree. While he dreams, a witch turns him into a dog. He comes home, of course, but can only bark. The bereft Kate wonders what became of her faithful mate, fearful that he did not know how much she cared, until one night robbers steal into the house, her dog scares them off and the witch's evil spell is undone. When Caleb is once again himself, he resumes a loving life with Kate. A great story to show kids that while grownups sometimes argue, they still love one another, and usually make up.
