Veteran children's lit professor Coleen Salley tells a variation on hersignature story, an archetypal "noodlehead" tale based on the time-honoredSouthern legend of Epaminondas. MY DAUGHTER & HUSBAND BOTH THOUGHT THIS BOOK WAS REALLY STUPID.CHECK IT OUT FROM THE LIBRARY BEFORE BUYING

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Patootie of a Book
When I chose this book to read to the K-2's in my school, I was unfamiliar with the term "noodlehead story". What a wealth of different voices and characters for storytime Epossumondas is. The kids all went "AAAWWWWWWWW" when they saw the baby opossum with his pacifier. It's totally endearing.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful gift for any age "kid"
This is a perfectly wonderful concept with super illustrations just waiting for a touch from the reader. It is impossible to read this book without laughing. Underlying lessons are as easy to take as a spoonful of sugar making the medicine go down!

5-0 out of 5 stars How adorable was this book!!!!
The little cuties make outfits with the fuzz from the ball. That in itself is a reason to buy the book.Cook-a-doodle-doo is still my favourite but this one is a close second!

5-0 out of 5 stars My second and third grade students loved this book!
Picture books must be truly intelligent, creative and entertaining to amuse my second and third grade class. This one was the biggest winner of the year with my students! They laughed UPROARIOUSLY at every detailed picture and continued to talk about it well after the story was over. It's great for Read Aloud because it gives parents/teachers the opportunity to "ham up" the voices of the prairie dogs. The content is appropriate for younger students, but the humor keeps elementary school kids riveted! Fun for adults, too! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Lots of people know the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle Diddle," but hasanyone ever thought about what happens each night after it's read? The dish runsaway with the spoon, and, presumably, they come back later, otherwise the rhymecouldn't go on without them. But one night, when the dish and spoon take off, they simply don't return! The fiddle-playing cat, laughing dog (who turns out tobe quite a grump when he's not playing his part), and the sleepy, moon-hoppingcow set out to search for their missing friends. Along the way they encounterLittle Boy Blue, the spider from "Little Miss Muffet," Humpty Dumpty'srepairman, and a big bad wolf. But will they catch up with the dish and thespoon before the next reading? And can all of them dodge the dangers of anafter-hours, fairy-tale world?Read more

A cute whimsical spin on a classic. Held my kids interset(age 3 & 5)and didn't drive me crazy to read the third, fourth, fifth, sixth .....

4-0 out of 5 stars So cute...
The author mixes a traditional rhyme with dialog between the characters. They are in search of Dish and Spoon but instead of all of them getting along, they fight and argue about what to do next. Some of the characters want to change the end of the rhyme but others want to get Dish and Spoon before the nursery rhyme is read again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Must-Add to Your Permanent Collection
After my daughter checked this out from her school library over and over and over we bought it.It is beautifully written and illustrated, the strawberry short cake recipe is great and everyone can help with it.It is a great primer for teaching kids to bake also -- for example it teaches what it means to 'cut in the shortening'.One of the best books out there. My three kids all love it, and will for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
My 3-year-old daughter picked this out at the library today and I am hooked! The story revolves around Big Brown Rooster, the great-grandson of Little Red Hen.He has become bored with chicken feed and wants some real food.Rooster locates his great-grandmother's cookbook and a few assistants and goes to work. The story quickly becomes silly as the kitchen helpers misunderstand the instructions at every point of the cooking process.Rooster sets them straight, though, and the result is a yummy strawberry shortcake (recipe included).Every spread in the cooking section of the story is accompanied by a sidebar explaining the relevant step of the process. These sidebars cover ingredients, measuring, turning on the oven, etc.The fun story and delightful illustrations will draw children in, but Cook-a-Doodle-Doo is more than just a story. This is a terrific introduction to cooking, and I will be adding it to my homeschool library.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous and engaging book
I am a elementary school teacher and I loved the book so much that I made a unit on it.The students laughed out loud as I read it.They were able to catch on to the pattern and loved comparing and contrasting this story to the folk tale of the Little Red Hen.The wording was excellent and the pictures were darling. The illustrations really captured the essence of the feeling that I am sure the author wanted hightlighted. Great!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT NON-VIOLENT FOLK TALE
This story is about a phrase that if said near a magical rock makes animals fall to the ground and then wake up shortly after. No one gets hit, they just have to say the phrase for the rock to make the faint. It is a great illustration of one of the many great tales from the Ashanti people about the mischevious Anansi. KIDS LOVE IT! I don't know how to explain it, but they think it is so, so funny. If you want to make your kids LOVE a book, get this one. And don't worry there is absolutely no violence.

4-0 out of 5 stars "What a strange moss-covered--" KPOM!
My kids (ages 8 and 5) think this book is hilarious -- I just now finished [re]reading it to my daughter, who made me repeat the schtick between Anansi and the little mule deer about six times in a row, ending up with us acting out the two parts. A little boisterous for bedtime, maybe, but we had a ball. The idea of a strange moss-covered rock that knocks out anyone who says "what a strange moss-covered rock!" is pretty surreal, but if you suspend your disbelief the rest of the tale, and its moral lesson, follow like clockwork.4-0 out of 5 stars Anasi a West African Trickster
Eric A Kimmel cleverly retells the an story Anansi folk tale in his book Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock, which is illustrated by Janet Stevens. It is a clever story based on the folk tradition of West Africa with Anasi the spider as a trickster hero.Anansi is a true mischief maker and after finding a magic moss-covered rock decides to use it to his friends disadvantage. In the end it is Anasi who is taught a lesson, maybe.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We keep coming back to the market
We have three daughters and our oldest received this as a gift when she was little. It has been a favorite with all three girls. The games that we play as we read the book grow with the child: There's the "name that animal" game, as our shopper returns from the market with a growing menagerie; the "Where's the animal?" game (not all the animals are easy to spot) and, as they get to know the text of the book, the "finish the sentence" game (Parent: "There's a duck on my..." Child: "Head").The illustrations are fresh and interesting enough that they keep younger children focused and the sense of humor keeps the slightly older ones amused (for example, after our heroine's goat eats her shoe, you see her hobbling back to the market wearing only one bright purple shoe).
5-0 out of 5 stars The best "non-page-turner"
This fun book has a great rhythm you will want to keep turning the pages and keep up with the beat, but if you read this to your children you won't get to turn the pages at your desired pace because they will love the pictures. The illustrations are great. Filled with animals and each one has a personality, as does the main character (she becomes more and more frustrated as the story moves along and her home is filled with animals who take over her house). There are so many cute details in the illustrations you children will find more things to discover with many repetitions of the book. You will read this book many times if you own it. Sometimes with your children and maybe even on your own without them there to distract you!

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this one!
My 4 and 2 year old just love this book. It is a very simple book and I do think the illustrations are very interesting and detailed.I ordered this online and when I received it and read it myself, before I read it to them, I didn't think they would like it much, well, I was wrong! The 5 star rating is from my kids, and they are the ones who love it, and for a kids book ,that is all that matters! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute New Story for Young Readers
Young Epossumondas isn't like many other opossums his age. For he lives with his so-called mama, who is a human, not an opossum like himself. And he doesn't live in a tree, but rather in a big, comfy couch. One day, little Epossumondas is sitting on the porch when Skunk goes by. Epossumondas notices Skunk's gorgeous, furry, black and white tail, and is immediately intrigued. Soon he is thinking about everyone's tail, including the tails of fox, and rabbit. Then he looks at his own tail. It's not fluffy, or bushy, or even powder-puffy. It's just pink and naked. So Epossumondas asks his mama, and she explains the story of Papapossum, and how opossums everywhere have tails just like his own, thanks to what Papapossum did years ago when he was trying to soothe his growling tummy.
5-0 out of 5 stars cute story

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and entertaining
Stevens has written and illustrated many successful picture books. She uses the fictional genre to show rather than tell her young readers about writing and illustrating a book. Vivid animal characters request her to write a book about them. Children see the process of creating the setting, plot, characters, and having tension in the story. The book ends with the suggestion for the reader to write a story.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too distracting
I already had several books regarding this theme, and this one is definitively not kids friendly. It didn't do anything for me and the black and white graphics are too busy and too distracting for my child to get involved in it. I bought it because it was on the reference page of another book I had.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Definite Winner!
I love Janet Stevens' work and this one is no exception. The illustrations are delightful, as always, and the concept of showing readers how a book is made is terrific.I'll enjoy sharing this with classes. It would be a great lead-in for students to do writing of their own, too. It's a winner! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
The author really gives the cat in this story a voice, not to mention the cat is just like mine. Great story and pictures. I read it to my fourth grade class and they enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cranky Cat Meets Big Dog
This is a humorous look at an imaginary life of Merl the "special" cat. He has his cat people and when they bring a puppy into the home, Merl begins an adventure. Kids love to hear it over and over--the illustrations are also very lovely. I love to read this out loud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a Dog can be a Cat's Best Friend
"My dish. My sofa. My chair. My mouse. My Bed." These are the words uttered by Merl, a very special cat and above each two word sentence is an excellent illustration. Merl, who always seems to have his pink mouse toy in his teeth by the tail is a happy, content cat, until his owners bring home a puppy. The puppy dog licks and slurps Merl to no end, apparently not aware that cats and dogs aren't supposed to be friends. Merl does everything he can to discourage the puppy, but in the end finds that nothing he does will shake this dog's love, so he leaves and seeks out a new home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book for babies
I already knew, having given it to my two-year-old neighbor, what a great book this is, but I was not prepared for what a perfect baby book it can be. When I read the hardcover version to my seven-month-old granddaughter, she held very still and seemed to anticipate each rereading. The traditional story itself is baby-fare, with billy goat voices in three sizes and the fun repetition of "trip-trap, trip-trap", but some of Galdone's illustrations of large and clearly defined faces are appealing to babies too. When I visited my now ten-month-old amazing grandbaby, her mom told me this is her favorite book and she reads it to her almost every night. While I was reading it to her, every time we came to the full-page picture of the billy goat's face, she leaned down and put her cheek against the paper.

On this page, and on one other page that I know, Amazon has accidentally put the reviews of different versions of classic fairytales together. In this case, you will see reviews of more than one version of "The Billy Goats Gruff".
5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old wants this read to him over and over
5 stars based on the enjoyment value for my 3 year old son. One of the "professional" reviews here is negative about another version, then recommends this one. Looks as though Amazon goofed. A couple of reader reviews here obviously refer to an audio version of the story. Anyway, Paul Galdone's version has appealing illustrations, follows the traditional story and is fun for kids. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Tortoise and the Hare
I like this book because it was funny how the Tortoise won at the end of the race. I also like this book because the author made a very good idea of the book. I like how she tells that if you keep on trying you will acomplish what you want. That idea is going to help me do better at things and incurage me to never give up. I rate it 4 stars because it was boring at the biging of the book, but i still would like for Janet Stevens to keep doing books like that. Thats what I think about The Tortoise and the Hare. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Jackalope
The pictures and story are great. I read it with my fourth grade class and they really enjoyed it. We discussed personification and onomonapeia while reading the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth reading
I bought this book because I liked these authors' style.I enjoyed the tongue in cheek humor that came through in this story.Often in reading children's books I can predict what will happen but not here- I looked forward to turning each page to see what would happen next- and was often surprised- chuckling with each new turn of events.

5-0 out of 5 stars This strange creature is sure to eventually turnip somewhere
I purchased this book because it had such an intersting title:JACKALOPE.Simple, yet mysterious.A jackalope is an imaginary (well, maybe not totally imaginary) creature that has the body of a jack rabbit and the horns of an antelope. This book is "the absolute truth" about what happened to the jackalope. The story is narrated by a crudgy old armadillo who sits in a lawn chair.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it!
My 2 year-old grabbed this book at the last minute from the library last week and has fallen in love with it! It has a nice rhythm, sweet and realistic plot, and is repetitive enough for her without annoying me (at least after a week). She's had me read it at least two times a day and fills in some of the words with a proud smile. Simply a perfect read-aloud book!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!!
My 2 year old daughter's best "huggy" is a platypus, so I was thrilled when I found this book at the library. My daughter has no interest in any books except for this one!We read it 4 times a day.If you can relate at all to losing (even temporarily) a child's huggy/lovey, you will love this book!I think we've lost our "platy" at least 100 times.Fortunately, he's always found his way back home, just like in this story "Plaidypus Lost".

5-0 out of 5 stars Lookout - your child will want a Plaidypus too!
My 3-1/2 year old daughter loved everything about this book, which we borrowed from the library. The poetry of it and repetitive story helped her to memorize it, and she chimed in a lot on the second and later readings. It's fun for adults to read, too - it's a sweet story, and not too long, too short, or too ridiculous. I am thankful for any children's author who makes it easy on the parents (and thus, not a great fan of all the long Dr. Seuss books!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kids Book Ever!!!!!!!!!!
I have a Basset, so I am partial to this book anyway.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Dog Who Had Kittens
It gave a true depiction of cats and basset hounds - basically that a male basset hound can be a better mother than a mama cat.Okay, so maybe I'm a little biased about bassets...but I love cats, too!It was a delightful book with marvelous illustrations.Great for the little kiddies (and the bigger ones, too!) who love animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Marvelous, aren't they?"
In this story, Baxter, a family's basset hound, grows affection for the cat, Eloise's newborn kittens.Once they are born, Baxter is forbidden to go near the little babies, but one day, his curiosity over comes him and he wanders into the laundry room, where the kittens stay.To his surprise, they are tiny, blind, weak, and helpless.Since Eloise is not around, he answers to their mews and feels that he must take care of them.Eloise soon finds him near her babies and makes him leave, immediately.Read more
