My favorite book as a child
We had the unabridged version of this, and I can't say how much I loved it. It really belonged to my big sister, but here I am at 46, and it is still in my possesion.Every poem is so simple and sweet, and for me, these illustrations really made it special.The pages are so big, and the drawings of the children so quaint.Most of the pictures are of children playing in the garden.When I read it as a child, I would lose myself in the pictures. I believed that EACH poem was about that VERY child in the picture.I read it so much, that without even trying, I memorized many of the poems. Now when I am digging in my garden, these poems come back to me.I must order more of these for the new grandchildren. ... Read more

A glimpse of childhood
This is a beautiful book with gorgeous pictures.I remember having this book as a very young girl (75 years ago), and I wanted it for my first great-granddaughter.I searched locally for a coppy with no success, and felt very fortunate to find this lovely book through Amazon.Thanks!I hope Gabriella, who will turn 3 on July 29th, enjoys this book as I did my copy so many years ago.

A beautiful book
"A Child's Garden of Verses", illustrated by Tasha Tudor, is a beautiful book.The poems are so memorable, they are just the thing to get a small child interested in the magic of language and books.Especially perfect to read aloud and share the pictures.Tasha Tudor's illustrations perfectly capture the magic of the poems.They are just joyous.A meaningful and lasting gift for the very young.

Thrilling
Despite its age, this book still thrills readers, adults and children alike.It is said that Robert Louis Stevenson was one of the creators of the thriller genre, and KIDNAPPED doesn't fail to thrill.It is the story of David Balfour, a young man who has recently lost his father.He receives instructions to go the house of his uncle, and he is surprised to find that his uncle is a rich manor lord.He comes to find out that the manor rightfully belongs to him, but before he can make a claim, his uncle has David knocked out, and put aboard a ship to be sold into slavery in the Carolinas.The adventure builds from there.
A quick summary
After the death of his father in 1751, David Balfour, a young Scottish lad seventeen years of age, sets out in search of his inheritance. He leaves Essandean, where he was born and raised, to find his Uncle Ebenezer Balfour and to claim his rightful name, David Balfour of Shaws. Upon arrival, David finds the House of Shaws in ruin and his uncle the same. Despite his uncle's situation, Ebenezer takes David in and gives him food and shelter, but later he secretly arranges for the kidnapping of David by the captain of a slavery ship bound for the American plantations.

Robert Louis Stevenson's kidnapped takes place in1751 in Scotland.The book starts where David Belfour, a young man who grew up in the lowlands of Scotland, leaves town to find a new life after his father died.He goes to search for his uncle which he just found out about, and to his surprise is rich.But he finds out his uncle is not a very popular person and after a harsh welcoming his uncle plays many tricks on David and also tries to kill him, because David is the rightful heir to all the money and the estate that the uncle took.Finally his uncle tricks him to get on the ship covenant, captained by captain hoseason, and before David realizes what is going on he is knocked unconscious and carried to the deck of the ship.Over the next few months he becomes friends with the crew and then moves to the roundhouse.One night when the covenant hits a smaller boat and one survivor, Alan Stewart, a skilled fighter from the highlands of, becomes a friend of David.After a conflict between the pair and the crew they become good friends. Everything is going well until... the ship hits the Taron Rocks and the ship is ruined.David floats to an island and once he manages to get to the mainland starts searching for any members of the crew that survived.He got directions of where to find Alan and while he was searching for him he meets up with Alan unexpectedly.At alas friends house they learn that they are the main suspects of murder of a king's loyal officer.They flee to the woods and have many quarrels between them.Finally they both get to their destinations and David forces his uncle to give him two thirds of his family inheritance.

Treasure Island
I thought this book was nice, but it was not my favorite. It first starts out when a big dark man with an scare on his cheek shows up at his family's inn the "Admiral Benbow". What Jim (the lead character of the storey) did'nt know was that thislarg scarey man was the begining of his horific adventure. Later in the book Jim finds his self sailing off on a boat called the "Hispaniola" to treasure island along with real seamen and an rude captain.

The book Treasure Island is an exciting book. It contains mutineers, pirates, and a big treasure. It is a challenging book to read though. There are loops and turns around every corner. Jim, the main character comes across a ship called the Hispaniola, and rode it for the rest of the book. He takes on many troubles throughout the book. At first, he meets a man called Long John Silver. He seems very nice at first but at the end, he finds out something about Silver.

Beautiful edition of a classic
A Child's Garden of Verses has always been one of my favorite books, and over the years I've given dozens of copies of it as First Birthday presents to the new children in my life.This is the most beautiful edition I have ever seen of these beloved poems.The illustrations are wonderful!They're taken from numerous editions over the years, and they cover a variety of styles and time periods.I couldn't be happier with this book, and I can't wait for the opportunity to give it to more children who I hope will grow to love it as much as I do.

A classic my 5 year-old requested - Glad she did.
A chapter a night and it was thrilling. I had never read this or had it read to me as a child.She was enjoying the movie, "Muppets Treasure Island" and was asking about the characters. I mentioned the original book and she wanted me to get it for her - the original with the original pictures.This is what I ordered and she and I have really enjoyed reading this classic.
This version is misleading -- No illustrations
Sure, Treasure Island is a great story, but the question you *should* have is which version of this great book should you buy?

More interesting than Stevenson's other stories
"The Bottle Imp" has a very creative, interesting storyline.
Careful what you wish for
Stevenson wrote this tale of the islands in 1891 and it appeared in Samoan before being published in English. The bottle imp review

Short Version of a Great Stevenson Classic
Thirty years ago, I was taught to read with this. Different pictures, same poems. I learned to imagine and believe in ordinary, yet beautiful things. Even today, in my own writing, I smile realizing how and when I learned a technique, just by listening to my mother whisper these poems nightly.
A Nice Introduction to Robert Louis Stevenson
This is a nice, extra-sturdy book for toddlers. It includes these eight complete poems: The Land of Counterpane, The Lamplighter, Happy Thought, Foreign Lands, The Cow, My Shadow, The Swing, My Bed is a Boat. Most toddlers won't sit still for the complete poems, but you can just read the first few lines until they grow into them, and they'll have fun looking at the pictures. There are various vintage illustrations in full color by different artists including one of a boy in a tree by Jessie Willcox Smith (Foreign Lands), a charming colored drawing of a Mom showing a bird to her four little ones (Happy Thought), a simple but cute picture of a little girl watching a cow (The Cow) and a picture by one of my favorite Child's Garden of Verses illustrators, Eulalie (My Bed is a Boat). Yet, the cutest picture is the one on the cover by Jessie Willcox Smith. It begs one to wonder why they didn't use her pictures for all the poems. Let us dance the dance of life
I had to read this book when I was in 7th grade and I really didn't care for itand after I read through it I forgot all about it. Luckily I accidentally kept it and didn't return it because years later I came across it and I decided to give it another chance. I'm glad I did because it's a good adventure book that will keep you interested the whole time. This book has everything from buried treasure, pirates, fighting, sailing on the open seas anddrinking rum. This is a book for both children and adults looking for adventure and a way to escape their everyday life.

A Must Read!
Excellent. A fantastic tale of greed, heroics, and courage. The hero, Jim Hawkins, is swept into a perilous adventure when an old pirate wanders into his home and dies, leaving behind a legendary treasure map. Creative, fun, and exciting, Treasure Island is a must read for people of all ages!

My 3 year knows poem by heart, but illustrator's vary
I have the Rand (illustrator) version of this book. Unfortunately when I looked to obtain another copy, all the reviews are lumped together so it's hard to determine the best illustrated version. Rollicking rhyme and whimsical mouse illustrations

The Best!
This book has problems. I can count two. The first is the dialogue, which is a little too self-consciously archaic, and the second is the fact that the second half of the book isn't quite as good as the first.

An informative but intrusive retelling of this classic story
Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is one of the classics of horror literature because it provides the paradigmatic example of the "werewolf," the human being with a monstrous alter ego.However, originally it was much more of a mystery story and that is the best way of describing this adaptation of Stevenson's novella by Michael Lawrence.The book's complex structure is simplified and Lawrence employs a narrator to help retell the tale.The adaptation is certainly competent enough, but the story clearly takes a back seat to the illustrations in this particular volume. More than we expected
My two grandsons, ages 5 and 7, are fascinated by adventure, swords, treasure, and secrets.I picked up the first two volumes of Treasure Island in this series because I thought they would enjoy reading them aloud themselves.They love them!We read them together, their parents read them with them, and we all are eager for more of the story to be published.All this so we can delve into Stevenson's original together in the very near future, maybe as early as next summer.Hurry with the rest of the story, please.
