2-0 out of 5 stars Confusion
I never quite understood why everyone seemed to love this book so much. I read it, along with my entire grade, in seventh grade, and found the book to be annoying. I was especially annoyed by flawed characters, and a not very impressive writing style.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed...
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor was a very disappointing book. There is no particular story; the book starts rising action here and there and down again here and there. There is no specific climax. Basically, it's like there's no story. What I also hated about this book was the ending and the fact that there was no moral in the story. The book was full of cliches from every chaper by chaper. Each chapter was too long( this is not a dumb complaint). Instead of just starting a new chapter, Taylor just skips a line to basically start a new chapter. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the first by far!
I read the book Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry in class, and thought that was good until I read the sequel. More action, more suspense, more everything! Mildred Talyor puts a suprise into every sentence. I found myself hating some characters with all my heart and supporting other characters aloud without realizing it. I reccommend Let The Circle Be Unbroken to anybody over the age of ten.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Land
The land is about a 'colored' boy, Paul who has a white father and a African American/ Native American mother. He does not face any discrimination in his early boyhood, but soon comes torealize it. After he disobeys his father and his closest brother betrays him, he flees with his- though not very close- friend. They face discrimination together and they become brothers. Paul wants to buy his own land though whites, long time ago made it hard to. Later on, things bad happen and Paul is forced to make decitions he has never had to make in his early boyhood.

The LAND
2-0 out of 5 stars review of an ok book
The Land was an ok book but not completely enjoyable. In the begging Paul and Mitchell don't get along and Mitchell picks on Paul tons of times and some times for no reason at all. Paul went to his older sister for help but refused even though she would go talk to him because he didn't want people thinking his sister would fight his battles. After he went to his sister, he went to his father for help. When he asked his father he only told him that he should fight the battle himself, Paul said that Mitchell was bigger and stronger than he was and his dad just said to use his strength, his mind. But Paul was still beat up and his father showed no sympathy. Eventually Paul asked his older brothers, Hammond and George to talk to Mitchell. Even after Paul's brothers talked to Mitchell he was still beat up. In time, Mitchell and Paul came to an understanding by Paul teaching Mitchell how to read, write, and figure and Mitchell teaching Paul how to fight. Later on when Paul's dad went to buy a horse, the owner's children challenged Paul to ride their wild Appaloosa and that if he won he could keep it. Paul won and got to keep the horse. A while after Paul's dad told him that he and his younger brother would have to be sent to separate schools because they were of different color. You'll have to read the rest to find out what happens. I didn't like this book because it didn't have suspense or excitement and possibly because I usually read fantasy and science fiction and don't usually like books that take place long ago. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Historical and Suspenseful
I recommend this book because it shows lots of diversity between blacks and whites. Imagine yourself in a time around the late 1800's when slavery ended. This story takes place on a wide spread farm area. In this time and place there lived a Black family named the Logans that were surrounded by mostly white famlies. And if thats not bad enough this one family named the Simms hates them. Maybe the Simms are just jealous because the Logans are the only family with a well that's not dried up. They also have the most land and cattle in the area. But all isn't good and well. Once there is a fight between Hammer Logan and Charlie Simms. There is a big controversy, because if a black man was to hit a white man, the Black man might be hung from a tree. Hammer didn't only hit Charlie Simms, he left him motionless as if he were dead. Maybe he is... . So next time you're looking for a great book that is historical as well as suspenseful pick up The Well by Mildred D.Taylor.

Editorial Review

It's hot and humid in 1933 Mississippi, when an elderly black man and a white store owner test their friendship against a backdrop of racism and peer pressure. An explosive confrontation takes place when the black man, Tom Bee, greets the clerk, John Wallace, by his first name--an intimacy unheard of at the time. A group of witnesses heckles Wallace for what they perceive as his permissiveness, and in spite of his private promise to Bee to allow him to greet him this way, Wallace betrays Bee, shooting him in the leg. This brief but poignant story won the 1988 Coretta Scott King Award. It provides strong characterization as well as food for discussion on racism and human relations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Friendship
I thought that this was a pretty good book . In the story these boys went to this market to get there aunt Callies head medicine. When they got there they saw a family friend that was going there to get his sardines and some candy canes. The boy that was there would not give him what he wanted so he asked for the owner and he came out to see what the problem was and he gave him what he asked for. When he went back in there to get some tabacco the guy who owns the market shot him in the leg.

This is a great book to read if you ask me. Mississippi Bridge is not his good. This tells a great story on what black and white people had in common back then. I read Mississipi Bridge, The gold cadillac, Road to Memphis, The well, Roll of thunder, Song of trees, Let the circle be unbroken, The land and this my favorite The friendship. This is perhaps not only the best Mildred D' Taylor book ever perhaps the greatest book of all time. I like it. I think the worst Mildred D' Taylor book is Let the circle be unbroken. My second favorite is The gold Cadillac. Read this. ... Read more

I liked the book alot. Especially when papa came home and started bickering to Mr Anderson.

4-0 out of 5 stars A verynice short story
This was a very short story set in the depression time. It had a sad ending, though it was happy in a way too....but the trees wouldn't sing anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Because of Winn-Dixie review
I thought that this was a really good book. It was kinda sad and happy at the same time. I thought that it was sad because I felt kinda bad for Opal, the main character of the book, because I could never imagine not having a mother. At the same time I felt happy for her because she had found friends in the end and of course Winn-Dixe in the beginning.

This book was great, but why did Cassie like Mr. Fredrick? The author never says who she ends up with. Does anyone know?
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I read the book over the summer it is extremely sad and I would not recommend it for an audience under 12. It was even better than the first book "roll of thunder, hear my cry" (I fell in love with both books). The whole problem in the book was that Moe, a black guy striked these white people with a crow bar when he got angry at them. This was an action unheard of for black people to do in those times so Moe had to run. Cassie Logan narrates you through this sad sad book. By the end of the book I was so attached to the characters that I cried because several unfortunate things happened in the end. I would STRONGLY recommend this book. ... Read more

Mississippi Bridge is about Stacy Logan, her brothers and sisters, and Josias Williams. Josias Williams is taking the bus to a new job because a flood coming through the town ruined his last job. In the 1930s black people were not treated equally because of their skin color. But then Stacy Logan, her brothers and sisters, and Josias Williams and Stacey's grandmother get on the bus but something happens and the town has a horrifying nightmare that will change the townspeople's lives forever.

The main characters in this story are Jeremy Simms,Josias, and Stacey, Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little-Man. It was a hard rainy day by the Wallace's General Store when Stacey, Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little-Man were watching their grandmother off on a trip on the weekly bus. Then Jeremy Simms' friend Josias is taking the bus to find his new job. But in Mississippi in the 1930's, black people can't ride the bus if there is not enough room for the white people. Then when other white passengers arrive at the last minute, the driver sends off Josias, and Stacey's grandmother. Then when the bus slides off the bridge into the Rosa Lee creek, a terryfiying thing happens. The bus floods, flips over and most everyone dies. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Friendship and The Gold Cadillac
I read the book The Friendship and the Gold Cadillac. It is a great book! It is about black and white (race.)Also how people should be treated. When I read this book it gave me some feelings. The book is sort of a short book.It also made me want to keep on reading it. I think you would enjoy it alot!5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful images, descriptions, and language grip the reader!
I teach a reading methods course in a large university. In an attempt to show them how to weave literature into multicultural and social studies themes I read a significant portion of The Friendship to my students. You could have heard a pin drop.My students were deeply moved by Ms. Taylor's use of language and descriptions of the intensity of the white's hatred of the African Americans. Some of my students were really disturbed by this, and stated they would feel reluctant to read this book aloud in their future classrooms. However, I explained to them that the feelings of indignancy they felt toward the Wallace's, and other prejudiced whites in the story were precisely what Ms. Taylor was attempting to illicit in her writings, and would be exactly what we would want our students to experience.Ms. Taylor's writings are effective because they are so vivid, and obviously so real to her.Because of that, they become real to us. ... It takes near impossible determination and courage for a family to remain together in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal. But in the Deep South of the 1930s and '40s, Cassie Logan and her family manage not only to stay together, but to draw strength from their adversity. Mildred D. Taylor's classic trio about the Logan family has been the recipient of many distinguished awards, including the Newbery Medal (for Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What's true, what's not?
The problem with a historical fiction book based on first-hand accounts is that the reader never knows what's true and what isn't. The general depiction of segregation in the Depression era South is accurate, but some specifics are questionable: for instance, Mr. Morrison's parents being from "bred stock." The author, a member of the Black Power movement, clearly had an agenda, and we can't be sure that she wasn't about to let the facts stand in the way of a good story. Thus we are reluctant to recommend the book when there are others, written as non-fiction, which don't require the reader to guess which parts are true and which are totally made up. Books like Black Boy and Black Like Me come to mind. Or I might mention the Jean Fritz books, with a section in the back carefully giving the historical basis for claims made in the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Cool
I think this book was great. I read this book for my book report. I enjoyed the whole plot of it all. I enjoyed it being told from a 9-year-olds point of view. I like that Ms. Taylor didn't let everything just pop out. Like Cassie's parents just didn't tell her everything. She found out most of the stuff either by sneaking around or by asking Stacey her older brother. Some of the parts were confusing. And others were a little boring, well I shouldn't say that I guess slow going is the word. Overall I think this book was very exciting and you should buy it why you can. I promise you YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Roll of Thunder Hear My Thoughts
I gave this book a 4. I thought it was a great book. I enjoyed reading it.The reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is beause there were some parts of the story that I got confused and didnt understand what was going on.It took me a while to understand some of the stuff they were talking about. Some parts I thought were slow and kind of boring.I would have liked it if they showed T.J. having the conversation with the Wallaces about Mrs.Logan.Read more
