5-0 out of 5 stars Good early-reader history book!
I browsed and browsed before finding a book I felt was proper to read to my two young children about Thanksgiving;this one was it.3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but whitewashes history a bit.
This is a good, easy-to-read description of the Pilgrim's journey to America, their hard winter, and the first "Thanksgiving" celebration. However, I think it whitewashes history a little too much. It virtually ignores the tension that existed between the Pilgrims and Indians. There needs to be a happy median struck between telling the truly wonderful aspects of that first Thanksgiving -- how the two peoples were able to come together, if only for a short time, to share the celebration -- while acknowledging there were difficulties in the relationship between Pilgrims amd Indians. This isn't being "politically correct" -- it's just acknowledging the truth to our children that relationships between those two groups of peoples were not usually easy. Life is complex, even for young children -- they will understand and appreciate being told the full story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to your child's historical library
This history of the Pilgrims is very complete, given the reading level of the book.It is written for second to third grade students. The story covers the reasons for leaving England, the journey across the Atlantic, the first horrible winter, the meeting of Samoset and Squanto, the help given by the Indians and the Harvest Feast itself. The artwork is nicely done and adds to the content. Second grade students may find new vocabulary and challenging words to read, while third grade students should find the reading easy.A good asset for the teaching of American history to early elementary students. ... The story startes out when Jack and his little sister Annie are on their way to a place called Plymouth. At first they had no idea where they were until Jack was hung after he accidently steped into a trap; they finally found out where they were.

This book is about Jack and Annie's adventure in 1602 (The day of the first Thanksgiving.). In their adventure, they met Squanto and helped prepare the food for the first Thanksgiving. I'd reccomend this book because it helps kids learn about the first Thanksgiving and it helps kids learn about it in a fun way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Merry Thanksgiving
I love this book.My 2.5 year old daughter also loves this book.It brings about the festiveness you usually feel at Christmastime but for Thanksgiving.Told in the classic 'Twas the Night before Christmas' style, it has laughs, tradition and warmth all wrapped up in a book that is perfect to curl up with some hot apple cider and share with the whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Picked This One Up
i was at Walden Books Yesterday and my wife called and asked me to pickup a Thanksgiving book for our three year old son. There were Biscuit and Clifford Thanksgiving books but I settled on this one.Told in the same manner as The Night Before Christmas, it follows really a traditional American Family Thanksgiving celebration including all the activities and preparation that goes into this great holiday.Actually its not so much about the night before as it is the day of, but that's ok.What appealed to me was how much it had in common with my own family's Thanksgiving from waking up in the morning and watching the parades, to family coming over for dinner. My three year old really enjoyed it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Book
I loved this book! It is a great book with a fun twist to the original I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly! This book is great for kids and adults!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids love getting fat!
I'm a music teacher for grades K-3. Never have I seen kids react so intensely to a sing-along book as they did for all the "I Know an Old Lady..." books. This one especially sparks kids' minds and brings so many other subjects into play. Kids like talking about Thanksgiving as it's one of the few holidays both kids and teachers openly celebrate. This book brought about questions of traditional food and activites as well as the health repercussions of stuffing ourselves. In the end, kindergarten through third grade eyes will sparkle to see the Old Lady grow into a balloon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story
I've only read the reviews of this book and it sounds great! I'm actually too old to be reading these kinds of stories but I just love how the old ladies in the "who swallowed a..." books get fatter and fatter. If only I could actually read the book. Gotta work on getting this book and some of the other related books! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What is your child thankful for? Read & find out!
This is one of those special books that involve your children and actually makes them think about what are they thankful. For me Thanksgiving is a holiday where family and friends gather around a table full of wonderful food and this is where this book starts. I like that book includes different families and that it doesn't focus on the 1st Thanksgiving, but about things that each child is thankful for. Parents who love them no matter their actions, for books, cats, dogs, bright sunny days, friends and lollipops!

    4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a child's Thanksgiving

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thanksgiving Classic Updated With New Illustrations!
The previous edition of this book, published in 1973, has been a favorite introduction to the Pilgrims for primary students in our school for many years. Written at about a third grade reading level, it works as a readable chapter book, as well as a quick read-aloud. The black, white and turquoise drawings in the older version were adequate, but the text always deserved more detailed and interesting illustrations. While I have not see this new edition, it appears that this situation has now been remedied.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Molly's Pilgrim is a great book.
I really enjoyed reading Molly's Pilgrim. It was just the right reading level for me.It was not too hard and not too long, but it was interesting. It is about a girl who comes to a new school and is different from everyone else.It is hard for her to adjust. One of the parts that made an impression is when the teacher likes Molly's pilgrim doll best and appreciated it.I would recommend this book to girls who might get discouraged with books that are long, because even though it is not a hard book, it's really interesting.By HG.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Molly's Pilgrim
The book "Molly's Pilgrim" by Barbara Cohen is about a girl named Molly. It is her first Thanksgiving and she founds out that she really doesn't have anything to be thankful for.Her classmates really make fun of her because of her unfamiliarity with American ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars Molly:a classic for ESL classes everywhere!
Barbara Cohen understands ESL students like no other author ever has!In "Molly's Pilgrim" she describes the pain of a Russian Jewish immigrant in her American school in Winter Hill.Molly is mocked and ridiculed by the most popular girl in Miss Stickley's class, and Molly's "limitations" are made even more evident because Molly and her mother don't understand Thanksgiving from the viewpoint of American culture. The assignment is to design a clothespin doll to look like a pilgrim woman, but Molly's mother designs the doll to look like a Russian immigrant girl.In the process, the class learns that pilgrims did not stop coming to America for religious freedom in the 1600s. Molly's family are pilgrims too!

A really, really bad story. A turkey is chased out of his home and hunted down through the woods. Here is a sample: "Turkey's legs bent in the middle as he fell. Mr.Moose put a booted hoof on his head and smiled..."I hope you don't have other plans for Thanksgiving, Turkey...My wife won't mind that you're too fat". The Turkey is than dragged back to Moose's house, where...SURPRISE!!, it turnes out he is a guest, not dinner. Is that supposed to be heartwarming?!

When selecting books for our children, I try to pick stories that will hold their attention, provide an important message, and involve animals and/or nature. Eve Bunting’s book A Turkey For Thanksgiving has all of these criteria - and more! It is also a good book for children who are vegetarians or vegans. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Addition to Any Thanksgiving Tradition
It is hard to predict how the politically correct police will respond to the publication of this engaging children's book. While the lead character is an Indian (or Native American or whatever p.c. term is in vogue these days) which they generally view positively, he is also a Christian which they generally view negatively. The plot twist that has Squanto embracing the Christian faith should truly ruffle some feathers (so to speak) because faddish dictates say that all religions save Christianity and Judaism are beneficial. Obviously by finding his new faith, he leaves the old one behind.Read more

I have so much fun reading this book to my children. You can be very animated or not when reading. It's so fun to be animated when reading it to my small children. They get really excited when I do. I think this was such a good Halloween/Thanksgiving book that I'm interested in buying more books by this author. We absolutely love this book-even my football jock husband has fun reading it to our kids. Which is really funny to watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
This is a simple book to read through for younger children. Written by native Americans it is a "thanksgiving" book from their point of view, why native americans have always celebrated thanksgiving. It has no mention of pilgrams or not fully proven, overly romanticized stories as most thanksgivings are but simply a beautiful description of the season, the great harvest and respect for the world around them. A book of why the Native Americans Gave thanks during this beautiful season.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book.
A simple but truly beautiful and wonderful book. To read with your children every morning and express thanks to the world, promoting connectedness and deep respect of all things. Teaching our children these important words will doubtlessly take us through these rough times and make the world as beautiful and peaceful as it was intended to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Way to Teach Gratitude
Anyone looking to teach the concept of Gratitude to children need look no further. "Giving Thanks" is the answer. The words, culled from the Thanksgiving Address (an ancient Iroquois message of gratitude still used today) simply, directly and eloquently give a roll-call of thanks from the Earth to the Sun and everything in-between. They evoke warm, inviting, even mythic images that I believe will delight most children. A personal, friendly face is put upon the elements that are usually looked at through the cold, impersonal microscope of science. The sun, moon, thunder and lightning, and even dead ancestors are transformed into Brother Sun, Grandmother Moon, Grandfather Thunder Beings and the Spirit Protectors, respectively. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fast read!
When Arther Bobowicz is asked to bring home the Thanksgiving turkey,he is horrified to discover the shops are empty. But when he visits the apartment of an eccentric scientist,he finds himself bringing home a 266 pound chicken instead. He insists to his parents he should be able to keep the chicken and eventually, his begging succeeds. He has great fun teaching his chicken new tricks,(such as going down slides, playing on swingsets etc.)but his 266 pound chicken escapes.Mayhem ensues.
4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Pinkwater (chicken included)
This book from 1977 begins the saga of Henrietta, the 6-foot-tall, 266 lb. chicken, a story that continues in ~Looking for Bobowicz~ (2004) and ~The Artsy-Smartsy Club~ (2005).This is a funny story about a boy and his amiable chicken, though the part about Anthony DePalma, the shady chicken hunter, goes on too long, in my opinion. As usual, the dialogue is a highlight.Threats, misunderstandings, mad scientists and town parades -- just what you expect from Daniel Pinkwater.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hoboken Chicken Emergency
At the start of "The Hoboken Chicken Emergency", we learn that no one in the Bobowicz family likes turkey, but they eat one on Thanksgiving anyway because that's what you're supposed to do on Thanksgiving. This is our first clue that Mr. Pinkwater is on the trail of something more than a farce about colossal rampaging poultry. This is a novel of ideas, one that's intended to pry into young minds and make them question their assumptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book For Young Children - a review of "The Story of Thanksgiving"
My five year old daughter (and to some extent my 3 y.o. son) is ready for a more advanced book than this one, but before we move on I thought I would say something about this sturdy little book that has been our foundation in Thanksgiving Day preparations for the last four years.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Thanksgiving
My 7 year old and 4 year old asked me to read this book every night since before Thanksgiving. It's December and they are still requesting it.The words are so simple, that they now recognize most of them and read to me!Simple words, but great story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first Thanksgiving book for pre-schoolers
Nice clear pictures, short, simple, interesting story with appropriate emphasis on God's role in the pilgrim's lives (without being a "religious" book). My favorite thanksgiving book for littlekids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and touching story
The first time I read this book was to a third grader. When it finished she sat in silence. Then, with an amazing amount of concern and compasion, she asked if it was a true story. The way the book touched her (and me) was amazing. It is a great book to help children (and adults) see the hardships many immigrants face. It is a wonderful book that can be used in the classroom as the center of a integrated lesson, or just read and discussed. This book is one everyone should read, around Thanksgiving or any time of the year.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is illegal immigration justified?
Eve Bunting seems to hold the opinion that breaking the laws of this country can be justified.I would not read this book to my third graders. In the case of illegal immigration, the end does not justify the means.Inher book, Ms. Bunting portrays a family fleeing a Cuba-like country for aFlorida-like destination. After enduring a harrowing journey in a rickity, leaky boat, the family arrives in America and is greeted by their fellowcountrymen in time to celebrate Thanksgiving.Sorry, but this book doesnot warm my heart. The problems and responsibilitiesthrust upon theUnited States by uncontrolled immigration is too serious an issue to glossover.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Many Day's to America
This book was interesting because it showed how people travelled when they immigrated to America.Somebody from our school had the same travel experiences as the family in the book.It was a sad story because somepeople got sick, but the conclusion was very hopeful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not You Standard Thanksgiving Faire- a review of "Arthur's Thanksgiving"
In this book, Arthur is chosen by Mr. Ratburn to be the director of the school's "Thanksgiving Day' play.As expected he is wined and dined for the primo parts by Francine, Buster and friends. The problems start however when it comes to filling the role of the chief bird.No one wants to wear that Turkey suit!
    5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur's Thanksgiving
The book was a brilliant book. I like how Arthur was the director and Francine thought that she was going to direct. Arthur had trouble finding a turkey for the school play and how he had to try to bribe people. Everyone threatened to quit the play if he couldn't find a turkey. He even bought a real turkey. Then in the end, he decided to be the turkey himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Carrolls' Class Book Review
In this story Arthur couldn't find a turkey. The best part of the story was when he found a turkey. We learned that at Thanksgivintg we can have fun like Arthur. Arthur was very funny in this story. Our favorite part of the story was when Arthur was a turkey and then everybody else became a turkey. We think that everyone should read this book because it has lots of funny pictures in it. ... Read more
