5-0 out of 5 stars Just WoW!
I usually don't read realistic fiction but this is one heck of a book! It is such and intense story but told in a way that makes you feel engaged rather than sad and depressed. It is a story of growing up and journeying. Dicey is still one of my favorite characters and I read it 8 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Homecoming"
The Tillerman's mother abandoned Dicey, and her three younger siblings, James, Sammy, and Maybeth in a mall parking lot one afternoon. After endless hours of waiting for her mother, Dicey configures a plan. Dicey decides they must travel to her Cousin Cilla in Bridgeport, Connecticut and see if she will take them in as her family. Dicey will do anything to keep her family from getting separated in Foster Care, even if it means the Tillermans must hike miles in the scorching sun, with very little food, and a only a map to guide them. After many days of traveling through different cities in all kinds of weather, the Tillermans reach her Cousin Celia's home, only to find she has died. Cousin Celia's daughter, Eunice, takes them under her wing, feeling it is her duty. The Tillerman's feel uncomfortable living with Cousin Eunice. They escape and make their last journey to Chesapeake Bay, full of hope, to her grandmother's farm. The last relative they know of.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's still true..
This book is full of adventure, and all of the adventures that the Tillerman children have been on.It's fun to read and makes you feel as if you were there with the Tillermans emarking on their next adventure! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ahh...okay.
By now, the wonderfully three-dimensional characters such as Dicey and Jeff are beginning to wilt. I recommend this book to fans of Dicey because it is good to find out what happens, but this isn't a book worth reading more than two or three times. (the earlier ones in the series NEVER get old) It's too depressing, and the happy ending doesn't really make up for the depressing parts.5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
Cynthia Voigt created a bestselling series with the Tillerman family that began with "Homecoming" and ended with this book "Seventeen against The Dealer." Voigt's talented use of action and realistic dialogue to move the story along keeps readers turning the pages and longing for more. I became a Dicey fan early on for her courage and her spunk. Dicey, the whole Tillerman clan make excellent role models for today's young.5-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
Seventeen Against the Dealer was much better than I expected.I read this book to do a report on, and it is very easy to understand, very easy reading.I was able to relate to each of the characters, especially Dicey and Maybeth. This book had something for almost everyone.A little suspence, a little adventure, and a little romance. If you are like me, I can picture a grandmother refusing to be taken to a doctor, eventhough she is near death. If you have read any of Voigt's books, read this one.It does get better after the 2nd chapter! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This audio book is abridged.
Even though the Amazon heading says "unabridged", the cover says this audio tape is an abridgement. So if you want it for students to follow along in their books as it plays, it may not be so convenient.

5-0 out of 5 stars finding her place
Dicey Tillerman, the heroine of Homecoming, is having difficulty settling in at her grandmother's, who has adopted her and her three siblings. She finds it hard to let go of shouldering full responsibility, which she was forced to bear when shepherding her family down to her grandmother's.Despite her chip on her shoulder, she manages to make a few good friends, and after her mother passes away, come to terms with the pain and confusion that she's bottled up inside. Will she take her grandmother's words about "reaching out" to heart?
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't worry if it's not good enough for anyone else to hear. Sing, sing a song.
When the Newbery Award (given each year to a children's book that is deemed the best-written work of the past 365 days) is handed to a sequel, I always get a bit incredulous.Really? This book is great in and of itself without having read its predecessor? In my opinion, sequels should never receive awards. If you thought that they were so great, award the first book/movie/album in the series, cause otherwise the awardee isn't going to make much sense.Harumph! There are exceptions to every rule, though."Dicey's Song" maybe one of the few.Unlike Lloyd Alexander's, "The High King" or "The Grey King" by Susan Cooper (the Newbery has a penchant for "King"ly sequels), Cynthia Voigt's quiet masterpiece does not necessarily require that the reader know the story that preceded it.It wouldn't hurt and it would probably make for a much better read, but not reading "Homecoming" isn't going to lessen your enjoyment of Book Two in the Tillerman family series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down!
I really enjoyed Homecoming by Cynthia Voit. I had to read the book for school and it turned out I liked it so much when I started reading it I stayed up all night wanting to know what happens next. It is a great book about four kids searching for shelter and love. It was sad and exciting at the same time. I applaud Cynthia Voit for her excellent writing skills on this book. ... Read more
