5-0 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage
Among my very early memories is as one of several children sitting on the sloped lawn between two of my neighbour's houses, each of us reading a different story - and so, in no particular order - from "Les Aventures de Tintin." This was my introduction to the most extraordinary comics world ever created, a part of my French-language heritage, though the series has been translated into many languages including English. My goal with these reviews (one for each volume) is to explain to an American audience why Tintin is such a phenomenon in the rest of the world.

Tintin is cool. The classic stories are a joy to read & Captain Haddock is always a riot! Funny, suspensful stories! Well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin is sooo wonderful
I love Tintin, and I would reccomend that you buy this book. It is the last three books in the Tintin seiries. If you are a Tintin maniac like me, then you would definately buy this. Even if you aren't a maniac, I would still reccomend it. Tintin in the Picaros is very good, and Flight 714 is verry funny. Even though they say Tintinis a reporter-slueth, I think he is more like a detective because he always has a gun. This book is soooo good. It won't take that long to read all three adventures, but you can always read them again. GO TINTIN! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A trio of solid Tintin adventures from the late 1930s
Volume 2 of "The Adventures of Tintin" brings together a trio of stories by Herg from the late 1930s, right before World War II.This is noteworthy because at this point Herg is refining his attention to cultural detail in these stories, but also starting to get more fanciful and away from what is happening in the real world. You will still find allegorical elements in these stories, but none of the events ripped from the headlines that you saw in previous tales such as "The Blue Lotus."
4-0 out of 5 stars Tin Tin, a literary comic.
I've read a little of the Tin Tin series, enough to make sure they are appropriate for young eyes, but my son loves reading them. They are colorfully illustrated and have lively stories and humor. My son is 11 and still likes to see pictures in his books. As far as that goes, I do too! This is a very fun series and I recommend it especially for kids who complain about reading in general. The Tin Tin series is engaging and fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What I consider Tintin's greatest adventure when he goes to the Moon
Of the seven volumes that make up the "Adventures of Tintin," Volume 5 is my favorite. It includes both the first story by Herg that I ever read with "Land of Black Gold," and also my favorite two-part Tintin adventure when out young intrepid reporter, Snowy, and their friends head for the moon.I realize the science fiction aspects of that particular pair of tales makes them atypical Tintin adventures, but Herg's attention to detail makes the story stand out quite well, even in comparison to science fiction films that were putting men on the moon at that time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring Tintins wonderful books
This was a great book! It surveyed knowledge of astronomy(which is always interesting), and then put on top of that a great mystery and awsome characters! You can't have a great Tintin story without Captain Haddock, Tintin, Proffesor Calculous, T&T, Snowy, and even Wolf make the story great. Herge really knows how to write!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin's greatest adventure as the first man on the moon
"Explorers on the Moon" ("On a Marche Sur La Lune," 1954) picks up right where "Destination Moon" left off...But what makes "Explorers on the Moon" so fascinating is the documentary detail that Herge infuses into the story.I cannot think of a 1950s science fiction film that predicts as accurately what happened when Apollo 11 went to the moon a decade and a half later. One of the chief charms of Herge's artwork has always been the way his caricature drawings of Tintin and friends are contrasted by the realistic backgrounds, and this artistic style achieves its apex when we see the spaceship approaching the moon."Explorers on the Moon" would work as a straight-forward first man on the moon type story, but, of course, in Herge's hands it becomes so much more.Taken together with "Destination Moon," this has got to constitute Tintin's greatest adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Futuristic animated adventure

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
A few months ago I was visited by a particularly nasty strain of influenza. As I sat paralysed in an easy chair with everything that could possibly hurt hurting, I had to decide how to pass the time, since nobody in my family would agree to shoot me.I couldn't concentrate to read the tiny print in a book. The thought of television nauseated me.Only one thing would do.Tintin books!I used to collect and read Tintin books with my son about fifteen years ago, and hadn't read one in at least ten years. So I re-read them all, from Tintin In America to Tintin and the Picaros and they were wonderfully therapeutic.I then went on to order Tintin In the Land of the Soviets, Tintin In the Congo and Tintin and the Lake of Sharks. My interest in Tintin being re-awakened, I looked for commentary and analysis about Tintin and Herge, and came across Tintin, The Complete Companion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only for the real Tintin fanatics
This book is an amazing source of information for the real Tintin fanatics. For those of us who love Tintin, but aren't really up there with the fanatic Tintin worshipers, it's a bit too much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin shines !!!
The first Tintin book I read was in 1963 when I found a hardcover edition of 'Destination Moon' in our grade school library...I was 8 at the time and I found the book so interesting that it was hard to put down, you always want to know what happens next...I must have read this same book at least 10 times and always wondered "what happened when they got to the moon ??"...sadly this was the only copy of a Tintin book in our small library...Then in 1976 I happened in a small bookstore and just happened to ask if they had ever heard of Tintin (they hadn't) but they checked their catalouge for me and THERE IT WAS !!!...'Exploreers on the Moon'..for $1.98 !!!...and more Tintin books , I ordered it and others and have loved the books ever since...Both my kids have read them and my brothers too...OK...I saw this book on Amazon and of course had to have it and it is well worth the money with interesting facts, trivia and more Tintin stuff that I never knew....very well written and researched, with great art and photos...If you like Tintin , you will love this...and it is in hardcover too...I wish I had the 'Detination Moon' hardcover copy from my youth... ... Tintin begins his greatest adventure when he and Captain Haddock are rather cryptically summoned to join Professor Calculus in Klow.It turns out that the professor has joined a consortium in order to build a rocket that will land a person on the moon (this was in 1953, well before Neil Armstrong).Unfortunately, the project has attracted some unwanted attention from those who will resort to sabotage and skullduggery to steal the technology. Is the project successful?Well, it's probably not that great of a spoiler to reveal that the story is continued in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning
The first Tintin book I ever owned, and along with the second part (Explorers on the moon) is still the one I love the best. A witty, clever tale with suprise twists and turns, great characters and all those fantastic drawings of the spacecraft itself. These two books played a huge part in starting my love affair with SF, and I'd even say they influenced my decision to write novels of my own (now happily published)
4-0 out of 5 stars Another good Tintin story.
A fun story. The science is a little shaky, but fun nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin and friends prepare to take a spaceship to the Moon
"Destination Moon"("Objectif Lune," 1953) gives a detailed account on the preparation and the launching of the expedition to the Moon from the Sprodj Atomic Research Center in Syldavaia using the rocket designed by Professor Calculus. However, be forewarned that this is the first half of the tale, which is continued in "Explorers on the Moon."So do not let the cliffhanger ending to this volume throw you for a loop.Just make a point of picking up both halves of the story and you can avoid any sleepless nights worrying about Tintin and his friends trapped in a spaceship that could well become their tomb.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Seven Crystal Balls
The Seven Crystal Balls begins where its predecessor, Red Rackham's Treasure, left off, with Captain Haddock settling into his family estate, Marlinspike Hall, and enjoying his newfound lord-of-the-manor role perhaps just a tad too much. The mystery begins at a variety show which Tintin and the Captain attend that evening. One of the performers, a clairvoyante, is suddenly seized with a vision that an audience member's husband is in great danger.Shortly afterwards, it is announced that the woman's husband has indeed been taken seriously ill.
5-0 out of 5 stars A mysterious Incan curse (part 1 of 2)
Tintin and Captain Haddock go to a psychic show. There an Indian fakir puts his assistant into a trance. She forsees a mysterious illness striking a photographer on a recent expedition to recover Incan artifacts. One by one the researchers on the expedition fall into mysterious comas.Near each lies a shattered crystal ball...
5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin and friends begin to deal with an Incan mystery
First, be aware that the exciting Tintin adventure that begins in "The Seven Crystal Balls" is concluded in "Prisoners of the Sun."As our story begins, Tintin is on the train reading how the Sanders-Hardiman Ethnographic Expedition has returned a trip to Peru and Bolivia. The gentleman reading over Tintin's shoulder predicts trouble, drawing a parallel between what happened with the curse of King Tut-Ankh-Amen's tomb and these explorers violating the Inca's burial chambers."What'd we say if the Egyptians or the Peruvians came over here and started digging up our kings?," asks the gentleman; What'd we say then, eh?"The comment is important, not only because tragedy does strike the seven members of the expedition as they fall prey to the Crystal Balls of the book's title, but because one of the themes that Herg develops in this particular epic is the respect Europeans should have for other cultures and ways of life. This point has been implict in many of Tintin's adventures, but it is a dominant element this time around.Assissted by his good friend Captain Haddock, Tintin becomes embroiled in the mystery, which takes a more personal turn when Professor Calculus is kidnapped. One interesting twist in this story is that Snowy actually ends up causing more trouble than the Thom(p)sons. There is a seriousness to what happens in "The Seven Crytal Balls" and "Prisoners of the Sun" that reflects a significant turning point in Herg's work, laying the ground work for his greatest tales, the two-part Moon story and "Tintin in Tibet."The ability of Herg to grow as a storyteller over the course of his distinguished career is impressive and these stories deserve the accolades they have received and the affection with which they have been embraced by generations of readers. ... Along with Mickey Mouse and Asterix, Tintin is one of the world's most recognizable cartoon characters. If you haven't read any of his adventures, you are missing a real pleasure. 5-0 out of 5 stars A very personal story
This adventure of the beloved reporter Tintin and his dog Snowy is one of the most personal story that creator Herg has ever told.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best and the most sensitive Tintin book
I believe that Tintin in Tibet is Herge's best book.It has a very serious agenda. Tintin's blind faith that his friend Chang survived the air crash in the Himalayas drives him, Snowy and his loyal friend Captain Haddock to find and rescue Chang. All through the adventure, they face terrible dangers and discouragement but Tintin's belief in Chang's being alive is never shaken.Herge, I have read, was going through a personal crisis in his life when he completed this adventure. It shows. There are occassional funny scenes as in all Tintin adventures but essentially, it seems that Herge did not want this to be a funny adventure but rather, a serious one.Hence, the absence of the Thompson twins and a very minimal of Professor Calculus is understandable. This book is a classic for all ages. The mood can be summarized in the last panel on the last page when Chang shares his thoughts about the Yeti.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin and Snowy head off to Tibet to rescue Chang
Tintin and Snowy were created in 1929 by Georges Remi (a.k.a. Herg). In 1934 Herg met a young Chinese student, Chang Chong-Chen, at which point Tintin's creator became convinced of the importance of having a soundly built storyline and getting the facts straight. In short, Herg started taking his soundtrack very seriously. After the Communists took over China, Herg and Chang lost touch. In 1960 the English version of "Tintin in Tibet" was published and it was immediately clear that this was a very personal story for Herg, who was writing about his friendship with a friend he had not seen in decades. 3-0 out of 5 stars Herge did better later
As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, except the first one "Tintin in the Soviets". As an adult living in the U.S., I am reading most of them again to my children, but this time in English. Herge's first three Tintin books are not as good as his later books, and this was his third book. "Tintin in Congo" is the only Tintin book that I have read that is worse than this one. "Tintin in America" portrays America with an old fashioned European prejudice that is unrealistic and unflattering. His portrayal of the Indians is borderline racist, and the plot is essentially "gangster tries to kill Tintin, Tintin miraculously escapes" repeated a couple of dozen times. In a sense Tintin is a super hero with "luck" as his super power, and this becomes tiresome. The plot is silly, and the book is certainly not a history lesson.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment in America
While not all Tintin books are "great" - this one is at the bottom of the pile. The plot is non-existent and the violence was pointless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tintin en Amerique
Tintin in America, the third volume in the Adventures of Tintin series, is the earliest Tintin story available from its American publisher, most likely due to the fact that its two predecessors (Tintin au pays de Soviets and Tintin au Congo) are widely considered to be just too politically incorrect. If you are a political correctitude sort of person, you will likely find Tintin in America to be lacking in that area as well, but it is important to remember that it is a story steeped in its time, and more importantly, fictio
