5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Max.
I love this book ! As a dog lover of mixed breeds for 30 years and a purveyor of fresh children's books too, this book is perfect !The story is charming and the illustrations are whimsical ! Children will apply this story to "bi-peds" (people) too. It is obvious that Joy loves dogs and understands them. Thanks Joy ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartbreaking tale of those who are different.
This book gives great insight to what students go through. It helps remind you of what it was like to be a child and how difficult it is sometimes to relate to others.I also believe that this book goes in depth and makes you feel an emotional connection to the trials and tribulations that children deal with.I feel that this book would be an excellent resource to use in class to help the children who are picked on and show other students how to be more considerate of others. The CD is also a great resource to use and to play in the classroom. It really brings the book to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Laugh at Me
Fast and user friendly service at the right price.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book with a Wonderful Message
Don't Laugh at Me is one of the most meaningful books I have used with my students in a long time. The sensitive material about humanity is handled beautifully. The illustrations are an excellent addition to the book.Every child from the ages of four to thirteen has been spellbound by the beauty of the song, the pictures and the elequence of their message.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Answer to an Age of Extremism
In an age of religious extremism, where every little group is convinced that it is the holder of the Truth, and every other group is mortally and sinfully wrong, this book presents an opportunity for discussion with your children. It does not answer what The Truth is (well maybe minimally). It discusses what it means to fervantly believe in a "broken truth" an incompete truth, that in the end puts you at odds with everyone else.It is an excellent lead in to the discussion of how it could be that human war over Truth (as if Truth needs assistance from Humans and guns).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth is Out There!
Once in a land faraway, a truth fell from the sky and broke in half . . . and so begins the powerful fable told in lyrical words by Douglas Wood, accompanied by the evocative watercolor art of Jon J. Muth.Compared to many picture books, this volume appears subdued and perhaps more than a little daunting for book shoppers. But you know what they say about judging a book by its cover . . .
5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling Story + Elegant Watercolors:=Ageless Picture Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A father and son go to watch Jackie Robinson during his rookie season of 1947
You should know going into "Dad, Jackie, and Me" that this story is a work of fiction, but as Myron Uhlberg explains in his Author's Note at the back of the book parts of it are based in truth. That fact does not take away from the power of the story and when you understand the truth behind the story you will understand why Uhlberg comes up with the perfect ending that he does.Uhlberg was born in Brooklyn, New York, the hearing child of two deaf parents. This story begins on Opening Day in 1947, when Jackie Robinson became the first Negro player in Major League baseball with a young boy listening to the game on the radio and rooting for the Dodgers and Jackie Robinson (and against the New York Giants). Then one day the boy's father comes home early from work and announces that they are going to Ebbets Field to see the Dodgers play the Giants. The boy's father is deaf, and so he signed the words with his hand instead of saying them out loud.
5-0 out of 5 stars Myron rocks!
"Dad, Jackie, and Me" is a fabulous story about a father and a son, about prejudice and triumph.Myron Uhlberg subtly creates a parallel between the unfair discrimination against his father for being deaf and Jackie Robinson for being African-American.This is a touching book with lovely illustrations...not to mention so many dimensions for a classroom teacher to explore with students!Plus, I met Myron today, and he is one of THE most warm, friendly, wonderful authors I have ever met.I give him and his works my most glowing praise!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great author
Myron Uhlberg is a prolific author, having published 7 books after his 65th birthday. He has many others in the works. He choses his words carefully and meaningfully. Most of the storyline is based on some aspect of his life, having been raised by 2 deaf parents. He builds a sense of deep, caring for the characters which will connect you to them. The illustrator has done an excellent job of capturing the essence of the storyline. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES OF BOOKS!!
I have all the books from the Learning to Get Along series. They are wonderfully illustrated and written. These are great social story books to help kids. I use them for my son and for the kids I work with at school. My son (5) will just sit and read this books on his own. I absolutely recommend Cheri J Meiners books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Daft... 'Aven't You Heard Of Parrots?
For reference, I came across this story in the summer of 2005 when Christopher Eccleston read it for the BBC's "CBeebies Bedtime Hour" (for us non-Brits: celebrities reading bedtime stories on the tele for the little tykes). As of writing this, I'm 21, and still enjoyed this delightful little tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book
... [Another reviewer] assumed that only commonalities link people and they couldn't be more wrong about the author's intent.I happen to know the author and she is all about acceptance with or without commonalities. This book was written for little children. To help children understand, sometimes a common theme is needed in order to get the point across. However, Mrs. Maguire is about accepting people NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE AND NO MATTER WHAT IT IS THAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THEM.This book is about kindness and seeing that just because we see people as different than we are, we are all unique and special individuals making up this planet.I'm sorry [another reviewer] did not see the reality of this book in the way it was intended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing resource for helping kids learn acceptance.
I bought this book after reading several positive reviews on it. However, I was very disappointed with it. The author attempted to make the book culturally diverse and inclusively based, but I did not find her method effective. I did not like the premise of the book that in order to be acceptable to others, there have to be commonalities. Differences as well as similarities should be embraced to better understand the individual. Stereotypes and finding similarities are not necessary in describing or understanding individuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for ALL children!
This book has beautiful words and illustrations that are important for all children to hear.It sends the message that all kids are unique and special in their own way.I purchased this for my children so that they could see how disabilities affect people, but do not make them"different."This book teaches children in a fun way, withwonderful illustrations and truly thoughtful, rhyming text!I highlyrecommend this to all parents and children. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good
Alex is a teenage who is HIV positive. Not many people want to be around him. This book shows the hardships that Alex has to go through. This book also shows how he has to deal with certain things. A boy named Clinton is one of Alex's worst enemies. Clinton hates Alex a lot. Can Alex turn Clinton into a friend and not an enemy? Read the book to find out.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting...
Alejandro "Alex" Crusan is a seventeen-years-old Latino and HIV positive. His family moved from Miami to Pinedale, Florida. No one in his new school will touch him, much less befriend him. The only one that does not avoid Alex is Daria, the girl with Down Syndrome. Everyone avoids her too. But someone nearby hates Alex enough to learn his daily routine, followed by taking a baseball bat to Alex's car. The windows shatter, throwing tiny glass shards over Alex. The shards act as knives.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is great quick pick.
This was a compelling read. I enjoyed the alternating perspectives of the three characters. I thought that this book offered several great messages and themes. This would make for a good teen discussion. There were also enough twists to make it interesting. I thought the author did a good job of going beyond expectations with the characters, creating depth to all three of the perspectives; both the "bully" and the "victim" were portrayed not just as those stereotypical roles.I also liked the inclusion of the Daria that was interesting addition. This is great quick pick, but with a lot of meat to make for excellent book club discussions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to teach math!
This is a really great book to teach math and numbers to your kids (and they won't even know it!)It's a pop-up book with tabs they can pull, so it is fun for the kids to play with, but they can also learn simple addition and subtraction from the story. Each of the numbers has its own unique character and the chaos in the food market is well-represented by the dynamic illustrations.Read this book with any child who has trouble with evens, odds, and simple math.It can also help teach about sharing and getting along! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars emotionally complex and powerful
Calhoun tells a gripping, disturbing and ultimately empowering story. As Rose confronts her worst fears she finds much more than her personal nightmares ever conjured, yet she also discovers more resolve within herself than she had expected.Although Rose has lived a life of bondage that makes her nearly incapable of claiming "mine," her values and the incredibly difficult circumstances she faces eventually enable her to assert herself more generously than those born to privilege might do. The mystical and fantastic elements of this story balance well alongside the practical details of orchard husbandry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it--one of the best young adult book's ever.I probably read40-50 books a year and this is onmy favorites list along with Jane Eyre, Poisonwood Bible, Crispin, Inkheart and books by such authors as Dean Koontz and Anne Perry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scribbleville: a scribbled or straight read?
Have you ever felt like you don't belong?Try being the only straight person in Scribbleville, where everyone is squiggly! This is exactly what the "new stranger" encounters when he moves to Scribbleville until a scribbled woman looks past his straight lines to become his friend. She illuminates the straight-lined Scribbleville people: "on the outside he's odd, but that's not where I look."Scribbleville is somewhat fantastical but the creative scribbles and purposefully placed color bring the story to life and speak to all aged children alike advocating embracing differences. The rhymed verse sometimes has an awkward rhythm, but will entertain and delight elementary schoolers. The next time you're looking for a well-versed story with a positive social illustration intertwined, share Scribbleville!

5-0 out of 5 stars Remember...
I remember when I was in the 3rd grade, which was quite a few years ago and my teacher told the class that there would be an aspiring writer come in a teach us some writing skills. That writer was Sam Swope. Along with the story of the Arabloolies of Liberty Street, each student including myself managed to publish a story of our very own which would be published by his publishing company. It was quite the experience... Just the other day my friend came across another one of Mr. Swopes books and he told me that he always writes about us.... But to be perfectly honest... this man, Sam Swope, is one of the best childrens' books writer that I have ever met, and Araboolies of Liberty Street is a classic that all children should read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book long before I had children.
I attended Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English with the author, Sam Swope.I needed some light reading one day and cruised the campus book store."Ah, a children's book", I thought, "that's a good choice."Little did I know how much that book would come to mean, much less to a husband and children who had yet to enter my life. The Araboolies of Liberty Street has come to be the one story we read every night which none of us wants removed from the rotation.I've been enjoying that book for 15 years-how wonderful to have others join me.It will become the "birthday" book for my children's friends. The toys will come and go, but the lessons of The Araboolies will live for a very long time, especially in our family.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book, But Not 5 Stars
I watch the television series Smallville faithfully along with my book club. Then we review the books. While Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfeld are the better writers in the Smallville book series, this one was not a 5 stars. The book is noble in pointing out the evils of racism.Kudos to the authors for that. The problem is we're in the mindset of the racist classmate the majority of the time, rather than in the mindset of Clark, Lana, Lex, or anyone else. This is a little too much to see his perspective. But, like most of the Bennett and Gottesfeld books, it is well-crafted and true to the Smallville characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good book
So far in the smallville series I thought this one was one of the better ones. I like the storyline. They did a really good job on the characters. One think I didn't like was it was hard to figure out which season the story took. I think it was in the second season right after Whitney left.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Funny but 4 Stars
This book is basically about a boy who is a big time racist and he receives an hourglass from his racist dad for his birthday. When ever he flips the glass, he can pierce the fabric of time (he can move at super fast speed like Clark Kent). This new found power allows him to commit hate crimes without ever getting caught. And with a multicultural celebration coming up in Smallville, it is up to Clark to prevent the bad boy from ruining it for everyone. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Midwest Book Review, March 2005 Issue
Isabelle and Erik, teenage friends in their first year of high school, are the heroes of this Young Adult novel. Isabelle comes from a family of former hippies who are Peace Corps volunteering, eccentric geniuses. Free spirits and emotionally open, Isabelle's household is warm and inviting, and they are not concerned that she has professed a liking for girls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
I am always looking for books which reflect real-life situations for teens struggling with real-life issues. Erik and Isabelle provides not only real characters and real situations, it also provides readers of every age with practical resources for surviving and thriving through difficult life-journeys.I believe that E&I has the power to break through the devastating isolation that can characterize the lives of gay teens with compassion and warmth.Besides, I just couldn't put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher Review
I found this book to be very real and honest. Being a teacher myself, I found it was helpful to both myself and my students. I have rented out the book with paretnal permission to a couple of my students, and they are biting at the bit for the next book to arrive. From a high school and junior high teacher, though stereotypes are not always kind, parts of them are real, and this book portrays the real life struggles, joys, and disappointments all teens face in some way at one time or another. It is the first gay/lesbian book I have found to recommmend to my students without being outdated or full of academic jargon. It is written from a teenagers point of view, and that is what makes it so popular among teens who are craving a book like this to relate to. It is an easy read, which is vital for our teens today who are overwhelmed with enough tough academic reading. To find an enjoyable and relatable book is rare! I recommend this to be in all high school libraries. Well done! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Living with a spider
Another cute book for the younger children.Children love books in which insects are given human likenesses. In a childs mind this book could very well be true.Foursom is like any child of a young age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning friendship and acceptance
This book had my two children (ages 6 and 8) bouncing up and down and giggling as I read it to them. They loved the story of Foursome's golfing adventures and crowded to see the colorful artwork, especially the spider's whimsical argyle pattern! After the book was over, we had a good discussion on getting along with people, making new friends, and trying new things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very funny and twisted
This book is totally whacky and really different. It's also very fun to read to a 3-year old. If you like Maurice Sendak (I'm thinking particularly of "Outside over There") or William Joyce (the "George" books), or even the "George and Martha" books, with their weird sense of humor, you'll love this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars worm family
This book along with "Diary of a Worm" are great for children ages six to eight. They become very involved in the book and identify with members of the family.Austin and Miranda were thrilled with the books.

4-0 out of 5 stars worms!!yuck! or are they?
The Worm Family is very "wormy".They are long, and squirmy. They like to sing loud. They are very different from there bug neighbors. They neighbor are mean to them and the Worm family decides to move somewhere where they will not be judged by others. They try several places but always run into others who don't like them because they are different. Finally they find a worm family just like them and all goes well from then on out!
