5-0 out of 5 stars Train Crazy
My three year old son is Thomas crazy and I thought this would be a good addition as he grows to broaden his knowledge. He loves it, it has many wonderful pictures and blurbs of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars book just FULL of information!
My nephew (4 yrs. old) just LOVES this book! We checked it out from the library .... and after returning it decided to order one for him. While it is not something that all children will like, if your child is into learning facts while at the same time LOVES trains, then this is one for him/her. I would highly recommand this book to add to your home library .... or if you are a teacher, for your classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Train Lovers
This is a non-fiction book all about trains, from the oldest to the newest, with layers of detail. This book is part of the DK Eyewitness Books series. The history, the details, it's everything we come to expect from the DK Eyewitness Books series. If you liked trains, you'll read this at a much deeper level. Each page has a summary paragraph that tells kids what's on the page; older kids and much older kids will read every word of every caption to absorb every detail in this fantastic book. The littlest reader will love seeing all the pictures of the trains andtrain paraphernalia. There isn't much you won't learn about railroads and the history of trains in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - not good for a 2 year old
This was very disappointing, we bought the Bob the Builder version for our 2 year old, and he had the same problems as the previous reviewer with stickers ripping. The reusability factor was also not there, after a 2 year old pulling them off and trying to reapply them just the first time, they were curling up at all the edges and not staying sticky. The other problem with this book is that the pages are non-contiguous posters, which means for him to use them as whole pictures, without pulling out 3 staples and then losing posters and stickers. All in all, I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a very poor book for little kiddos.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty book, but BIG disappointment in sticker quality
My children have always loved sticker books and I have bought many many of them over my 20 plus years of parenting. I must stay this one, that I just bought for my son for his 8th birthday, has been the biggest disappointment in a sticker book that I can remember. Why? Because for a sticker book to be fun for a child, the stickers need to be totally cut away from the border paper so that the child isn't ripping them in half trying to get them off the page. This book's stickers are not die cut properly, and so after he ripped a few stickers, I had to cut around each of them to separate them from the border so he could use them. No fun for him, having ripped his first stickers, no fun for mom to have to cut out each sticker!! The book itself is big with lovely backround pictures to place the stickers on, but I rate it only 2 stars because the sticker quality must be there for a sticker book to be good for the child. Also, I found the stickers to be a bit "thin"...for supposedly being a "reusable" sticker book (and we have rarely found in our vast sticker book experience that stickers actually are "reusable")and the stick isn't as strong as I would like to see. A sticker on the first stick should not be curling up on the edges.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute board book featuring train sounds, rhymes
This is a 10-page board book for toddlers and young children. It is not about a train song in regular terms, it is about the sounds that the trains and train workers make as they go about their train business. Each passage contains sounds such as "All Aboard" and "ding, ding ding". The text is simple and rhyming. I love the passage "by now some are singing, babies giggle, grown-ups snooze-we're bouncing to the rhythm of the chugga-chugga-choos".Read more

Editorial Review

"Trains are trips. And trips are adventures. And adventures are newideas and romance and you can't ever know what in the world will happen which is exactly why you are going." This is precisely the species of serendipity that bounces and leaps through the pages of Maira Kalman's picture book Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a great place
I read this book last week for an elementary school storytime, and it was a rousing success.Questions and riotous laughter abounded. The giant chicken on the tracks was a big hit, especially. There are lots of small visual gags for the sharp eyed, as well as marvelous wordplay. This is a book easily enjoyed by adults and children alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars FORGET BARNEY AND RUGRATS -FINALLY A DECENT BOOK FOR KIDS
Not since Roald Dahl has a writer spoken to kids with such respect and imagination. When I read this to my 4 year old she was filled with questions and ideas and that is all I need to know. Some people have an unconventional style that fits both children and adults and Maira Kalman is certainly one of those people. This book and the Max series will be included in the lives of all the children I will ever know and they will be the happier, more imaginative and more creative for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inappropriate for any age level
The artwork is unappealing, and seems as though she is ridiculing people. The tone is too bitter for children, and the book lacks any emotional truth that might appeal to a teenager or an adult. Like most of Kalman's work, this book generally is pointless; like when a college student feels embarrassed after making some vapid comment, and so pretends that it's an "inside" joke. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's simple, but it works
We bought this book for our son when he was about six months old.Ever since, it's a lock to hold his attention. The text is brief with simple rhyming lines. The illustrations are bright and clear, but not too detailed. It doesn't really tell a story.More accurately, it highlights some key elements of train travel (whistles, the dining car, a caboose). It's a cute book, but frankly, I'm not sure I "get" what is so interesting to my son.Regardless, when I'm putting him to bed and we choose a book to read, he will usually reach for this one.And as any parent knows, when you find something that works, don't question it.

5-0 out of 5 stars toddler technicolor
My two toddlers love this colorful rhyming boardbook and its companion masterpiece Hooray For Truckmice. These computer generated illustrations scream with vibrant colors that will inflame the imagination of even the most jaded toddler reader. The simple rhymes are charming. You can't buy a better book for your youngsters for less money than this high quality, small boardbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Subway ride
My 4 year old and I LOVE this, even though he's never been on a subway! Great writing, simple, but descriptive. Wonderful graphics. Makes me want to go ride one for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars The sights and sounds of the city come alive!
My Subway Ride is a wonderful reading experience! The beautifully crafted language and vibrant illustrations bring the New York City subway and its culture to life. This is not just a book for New Yorkers! My Subway Ride introduces young readers to the bustle, chaos and joy of urban living and celebrates the diversity and community that make New York a great American city.

2-0 out of 5 stars good illustrations, dreadful text
Buy the book for its richly atmospheric illustrations, but as you look at them, make up your own text. This is home-made "poetry" at its worst with its utterly clichd metaphors and dull, noodling rhythms. It's a mystery why the writers got top billing for spoiling an otherwise fine book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This was a time...when trains were extraordinary
The professional reviews did not prepare me for the poignancy and beauty of this story. The story is of a young boy, forced to leave behind his home, loved-ones, comfort, and security for the unknown adventure of the new world. His link to the known and familiar was a small wooden boat carved by his grandfather.Just as he was beginning to embrace the wonder and awe of his beautiful adventure the boat slips from his hands and is lost forever in the prairie grass.Despite the attempts of parents to comfort him in his loss, the longing for home and things as they were envelope his thoughts and he will not be comforted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Favorite for Kids who Are Train Lovers!
I give this book five stars, not because I think the pictures are the best, but because this is THE favorite book right now of my 3 1/2 year old train loving son! The simple, factual text gives lots of helpful information for parents to talk with kids about the different kinds of trains there are (diesel, steam engine, electric etc.) and the various functions of a train. 1-0 out of 5 stars I do not recommend
There are so many great kids books out there, it amazes me that a publisher could produce such a bad book. In this story, Thomas the train "comes to breakfast", meaning he crashes into a home where the family is eating at the table.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story and fun Exercises for Beginning Readers
Great story and fun exercises to reinforce what they read.Perfectly described by the other reviewer except our Kindergartener did not have any trouble with the exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars My son would give it 5 stars
We got this book out of the library, and a week later I hid it because I needed a break - he wanted to read it SO MANY times every day.My two-year-old son loves this book.He loves anything about trains, but this one especially appeals to him with its bright pictures and cute animals.I gave it four stars because the words are pretty minimal and boring to the adult reading it, but my son can hear the words "choo choo" and "chugga chugga" a million times and never get bored. He likes making sounds for the different animals, and even helps me count, which he usually will not do.I will probably end up buying a copy after we return ours to the library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chilling Mystery
On each page, there is a new train, with a different group of animals riding in it.Four dogs, five penguins, etc.On the last page, there is a ten-car train with ten different animals...except that there are two alligators.Looking back over the book so far, the careful reader will find that one animal appearing in the previous pages did not make it to the final train. What has happened here?Did one of the alligators really....
