5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories
This is a book that is very close to my heart. As a child, I would always pick this book for my mother to read to me. I still have the book and have since introduced it to my nieces. The artwork is beautiful and the story is timeless. I highly recommend this book to anyone with children. I'll always remember the last line, "Yes indeed, oh indeed, oh indeed, Katie did".

3-0 out of 5 stars Train missed the Station
The Sissney family decided to start a new life and move to a new town named Florence in Oklahoma. When they arrive there is nothing there except dirt. Cissy is the main character -- her dad helps plan the building of the town. The train that goes past their town decides not to stop at Florence. So the people of Florence try to make the train stop, but their attempts to force the train to stop do not work. Then Cissy's mom decides to leave and stay with her mom because she thinks Florence is not a good place to raise a child. Her father decides to send Cissy to see her mom. But instead, her mom gets off the train and decides to stay in Florence. One day the train stops because they have so many passengers who want to get off the train because they want to become Florentines. Then the town decides to change its name to Olive to make peace with the owner of the train. Loucien, Florence's schoolteacher marries Everett Crew, and one of the passengers who got off the train becomes the town's new schoolteacher.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book that will entertain readers of many ages.
Cissy doesn't quite know what to expect as she and her family clatter across the prairie in a train towards Florence, Oklahoma. They are going to claim some land on the new frontier and start a new life in the township. But when Cissy, her father, her mother, and a handful of other people get off the train, travel-weary and unsure of themselves, all they find is open prairie. Florence does not exist; it is a place they have to create for themselves.4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read for kids and adults
Cissy, her parents and a handful of other colorful characters are the first to arrive in the not yet town of Florence. They've come to homestead and build a life out of nothing but vast Oklahoma prarie, but the first night after their arrival, a man from the railroad attempts to buy each of their shares for $50 a piece. When all but one refuse to sell, the spiteful railroad owner refuses to stop the train in the town. No train means certain doom for the new town and all of its inhabitants so they set out with a series of schemes to get the train to stop. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Train story about folk hero Casey Jones
I am ashamed to say I didn't know the story of Casey Jones before I read this book, but had heard the name connected with trains. I also did not read this book before reading it aloud to my son. I was kind of shocked at the content but my just turned 4-year-old was just fine with it all and he loves the book. You decide if your child is ready for this story.4-0 out of 5 stars EVERYONE NEEDS A HERO!
Everyone needs a hero, and children will surely find one in this robust true story of John Luther "Casey" Jones, perhaps our country's most famous locomotive engineer who died in 1902 with "one hand on the whistle and the other on the brake."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Small price for a portable - play anywhere - theme song
The story is abbreviated, true. And the illustrations are somewhat flat.BUT you get the 3-D face on the cover, the theme song played at the perfect volume with cows and sheep on the first double page (can hear the song better with the book open). Our one year old rarely makes it past that first page but there's no need!A run through of the song, some moos and baas... cheers up a sad (car bound) baby everytime.

2-0 out of 5 stars Anti - Thomas
Is it OK to say that you don't like TTTE?There is no denying that kids have been captivated by the Thomas phenomenon, including the mass merchandising of toys and every conceivable household accroutrement - from lampshades to bedspreads, toothbrushes to curtains...overpriced clothingranges...mainly on the strength of the TV series and the BBC/ABC marketingarms.3-0 out of 5 stars Another good story about Thomas, but not long enough.
I purchased this particular Thomas the Tank Engine book for my grandchildren, as they have enjoyed the stories about Thomas in the past. However, if I could have seen and read this book in a book store, I probably would not have purchased it. While the graphics are extremely good(as usual), and the music is quite cute (and appropriately quiet), thestory is just too short at 10 pages. In addition, I am always looking forbooks that are interesting for my grandchildren, but yet teach them newwords. Unfortunately, this book just is too short to meet that criteria forme to rate it any higher than 3 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you have a Thomas fan, they will most likely enjoy this!
You know if you have a Thomas fan in the family, they like almost any Thomas book.I would not say this is one of the best Thomas books around, but my younger son also loves clocks, so this was a dream combo book! The pictures are fairly cute and not too cluttered. My son's favorite is whenGordon is peeking in the window of Sir Topham Hatt's office---he lovesbeing able to tell it's Gordon when you can only see a bit of him!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for Toddlers
This a fantastic book for toddlers when you're trying to teach the concept of time. Each page shows what Thomas or other trains are doing and the event coincides with a particular time of the day starting at 7 am untilnap time at 7pm. Our son loved to turn the clock's hands on each page whileI read aloud what time it was and what Thomas or other trains were doing. An ideal book for 3 and possibly 4 year olds learning to understand time! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interactive and Informative
I found this book at a used book store and my son (3 years old) immediately liked it. The book features full color and highly detailed drawings of trains. What sets it apart from other introductory books about trains are the clear acetate overlays between most of the pages. These plastic pages are printed with designs that are visible on both sides and that add to the printed images on the other pages. The overlays also cover up text on the upcoming page so that more information and pictures are revealed when the child lifts them up. The book has a lot of the appeal of a lift-the-flap book, but is much more durable. It has a spiral binding that is enclosed inside a hardback cover, so the pages lie flat.5-0 out of 5 stars Trains (A First Discovery Book)

4-0 out of 5 stars "It's Funny Where Ben's Train Takes Him" - a review
I am always surprised when I find a good book that is only available in the after-market.What's with that?! (LOL).
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations
Children will love the illustrations in this picture book. Most younger children will have a hard time grasping the subtle humor. Children will have fun searching for things during the ride that are in Ben's room before the adventure starts. Can be good with students learning varying meanings of words in 3rd grade and up to think about what the word funny is meant to mean in the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book
this is a fun book, but takes some time for the parent to get down. Lots of fun, our daughter loves it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Jiggle Joggle - fun with words!
My son is almost two and requests this book often! Though he can't pronounce the words very well, he seems to really love the playfulness and repetition of the words. It's a fun book (and a tongue-twister for parents) and a great thing to bring out the silliness in all of us. I'd highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lively story telling of the railroad's development
There are plenty of train histories written for adults, and many a picturebook coverage: now older readers in grades 4-6 have a solid discussion of how trains have changed the transportation world in Milton Meltzer's Hear That Train Whistle Blow! Meltzer specializes in books of history, biography and social issues for young readers: his is a lively story telling of the railroad's development, its impact on lives, and the personalities and events which shaped it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book
This is a beautiful book. It is beautiful to look at, it is beautiful to read. The words have a symbiotic relationship with the illustrations, and the illustrations with the words. Together they tell a story that in lesser hands would be just another one of those "we built a bigger better longer something" book, but in the capable hands of the writer and designer they tell the story of Grand Central Terminal - which is basically a story of engineering and city planning - as if they were witnessing the miracle of birth, which, of course, they were. We gave the book to a ten-year old girl who lives next door. She shyly took it, opened it, looked at it, thanked us, and disappeared with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great building; great book
As this interesting new book tells us, there is a lot more to Grand Central Terminal than the present building. The story behind the Terminal is fascinating, and it's told here in a compelling, accessible fashion that both competent young readers and adults can enjoy. Author has a warm, chatty style that works well for the story, which gets complex at times. Book is gorgeous to look at as well--stunning photos, although too bad some are so small. Nice maps, time line, glossary, etc. Overall, extremely informative and highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Little Engline that Could--Original edition--hardcover
After reading the "original" "retold by Watty Piper" edition, I see that the little red and blue engines were both "she"'s and not "he"'s after all. I apologize for providing inaccurate information in my earlier review. I give the WattyPiper version only 4 stars because Piper's prose is verbose. Whoeverrewrote the story for the Cristina Ong version should be commended forhaving a very good ear for English prose--Watty Piper did not--and shouldconsider issuing a full-length version of the story with more of CristinaOng's illustrations.
