A wonderful children's adventure story
A very well illustrated and written narrative of a train ride into the wilderness of Alaska.I am a collector of Alaskana books and was happy to add this to my extensive collection.The author writes of things that children are intersted in: trains, adventure, and the last frontier.Take a ride along the worlds most remote rails from the sprawling metropolis of Anchorage to the remote wilds which fervidly encroach upon its front door.Even if you are not a fan of Alaskana this book will interest all train aficionados, wilderness fans, and watercolor devotees.Rustle up your adventure gear and grab your conductors cap this ride's destination is pure delightful entertainment.

Great book!
Sumi is a Korean-American girl who lives with her grandmother, whom she calls Harmony (which means grandmother in Korean), on East Blossom Hill. Her mother is in the army and Sumi is homesick for her. Sumi watches the trains in the valley below hoping that someday her mother will be on one. The train whistle reminds Sumi's grandmother of when the Korean War took place. She and her family escaped from Seoul, Korea just before the war came. This marked a very sorrowful time in Harmony's life because she had to leave her husband behind in Seoul to travel to Pusan, which was safe. Though her husband loved her, he insisted that he needed to take part in the war by being a soldier. A though provoking history lesson for readers of all ages.
This is a magnificent book for readers of all ages to enjoy and explore. Younger children may enjoy it on it's simplest level of a child missing a mother. Older readers will enjoy learning about the effects of war on family and friends. Everyone will savor the gracious art of the illustrator and will feel the story through his heartfelt interpretation of the author's words. Haemi Balgassi has truly written this story from her heart and tears and we are more than fortunate to be able share her family's history. Every classroom should own a copy of this wonderful history lesson

Beautifully illustrated
This is another Thomas book beautifully illustrated by Tommy Stubbs. I much prefer these Thomas books to the "originals". Both my 3 year old and 4 1/2 year old enjoy this book very much. It's an engaging story with good moral lessions (Thomas misbehaves, but learns from his mistakes).

Too Wordy!
My 3 year old son is a huge Thomas fan, but tends to get a bit distracted by two things about this book.One is it's "wordiness" - there's a lot of language on each page, and he gets bored and want to flip ahead, while I'm trying to finish. Another great nostalgic tale
This is a great little gem of a book. All the grandparents out there who ever took a train ride as a child will undoubtedly enjoy reading this to their grandchildren. Trains are such compelling mechanisms, after all, and the story of a young girl taking her first train ride alone is a great combination. The illustrations are rich and realistic. Another reviewer was put in mind of Chris Van Allsburg, as was I. These illustrations are slightly softer but no less impressive. They pair nostalgic images with the text, resulting in a verbal and visual trip to a bygone era.

wonderful imagery, a treat to read to your child
This book was a treat to read from the first time we got it out of the library; it has only grown on me more since then.The story begins with "Shhh, listen --" and the illustration of the girl stretched out with her ear pressed down to the floor listening to the train approach is so accurate, it pulls you straight in to her world.It's easy for any young person to feel that she is there right alongside the girl in the book.The author conveys the sights and sounds of a train ride so well that I am always transported back to my own train journeys, even though I myself have never been stuck on the tracks in the middle of a blizzard (the events of the book are based on a true story).The details and imagery are vivid and perfect and the actions of the young girl riding alone so wonderfully recall what any of us would do at that age -- marvel at the astonishingly perfect shape of sugar cubes, wave at the cows as we pass, press our nose to the glass and watch the snow magically soften and whiten the world, slide off the seat and bump-tumble to the floor when the train suddenly stops...This book is wonderful to share with any young child and will increase their appreciation for trains, for travel, and for the up and down feelings that come when doing something new as well as the ultimate joy and triumph of achieving something on your own.An enthusiastic 5 stars.

My son's favorite
My 2 1/2 year old son loves the "Thomas" books in the Step into Reading series, but James Goes Buzz Buzz is his favorite by far.My wife and I bought it for him for St. Nicholas's day (along with 3 others listed below), and since then he has read it every day, multiple times a day, and like the another reviewer's son, he knows the words.He liked them all so much, we could not resist buying him three more for Christmas.
