2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a five year old
I bought this book for my five year old boy.Based on the description, it sounded age appropriate. However, it was a little advanced for him so we returned it.Maybe better for eight and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly simple to learn, no tears
Some art books can make kids cry in frustration with, "I don't get it, I can't do it". I have never had that problem with books from this artist, kids just love these!Ed Emberly has made some wonderful books for kids and grown-ups of any age that have no drawing skills, but want to learn a simple way. His books are the easiest books to get you started if you have no previous drawing skills. He doesn't talk down to you, he doesn't talk at all but uses his step by step method for you to follow. As a result, you can use these books for kids that have language issues. He starts with a step by step illustrated lesson to draw one simple item. First a simple straight line here, then insert a circle then, then another line, step by step along the way and before you know it you have a completed drawing that you can be really proud of. I teach Cub Scouts and this artist makes the perfect book for teaching a class when you are a volunteer yourself that is not an art pro.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Your Older Artist
This is a book that uses stick figures and basic shapes to help children learn to draw more complicated pictures. This is an interactive book to teach drawing. Every little artist will enjoy the simple step-by-step drawings and colorful illustrations that Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Trucks and Trains contains. Smaller children will learn new words while their older siblings can use the book to learn how to draw more complicated pictures than just stick figures. However, it is somewhat difficult for the four-year-old child. An age recommendation on the book itself would make buying the book a little easier for parents and gift-giving relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our favorite Virginia Lee Burton Book!
We love this book, it's our absolute favorite Virginia Lee Burton book.My children always seem inspired and excited by the story of the snow plow that nothing could stop!
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic children's tale
This is of course by the same author as "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel," and just as delightful.Appeals to girls and boys alike, and as your child grows, (s)he will find more and more in the book -- maps of the town, buildings' names, names of machine parts, and more.Strongly recommended, even for those unfamiliar with "Mike Mulligan."

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Burton's Best - a review of "Katy and the Big Snow"
I have to agree with the other 3-Star Reviewer. This is not one of Burton's best books. My children (boy and girl; almost 4 and 6) didn't care much for it.There is none of the usual clamoring for another read.

My little guy got this for Christmas and he just loves it.Yes, the cigarette ad is there, but you can cover that up.This book shows so many different trains, many of which I've never heard of.My guy can look at this book for hours and just really learn a bunch.I particularly like the snow trains and JR 500 that goes 186 mph (I didn't know that existed!).Great book and a neat tool to learn something new. There's no storyline at all.Just a big board book with a bunch of pictures and descriptions of all sorts of trains. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity is its strong suit!
When I first got this for my son (2 years), I thought "What a snooze-fest!" We were still high on the Mo Willems wave, still in love with Knuffle Bunny and the slightly off-kilter viewpoint of the Pigeon, so the utter barrenness and simplicity of Machines at Work honestly put me off. But, as it is all about the baby (and don't he know it!), Connor simply loves it! Although he is fickle (we have now moved on to the pop-up Bug series by David A. Carter) it firmly held the New Boy Times #1 bedseller slot for a good 3 weeks (an eternity to the toddler set). It also was known to douse many a tantrum (great diversion - "I know you just ka-bonked your head on the dining room table for the fortieth time today, but LOOK AT THESE COOL TRUCKS!") and entertain on long car rides.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Byron Barton Classic

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Learning to Read

5-0 out of 5 stars great ABC book
I purchased this book for my preschool class.I haven't read it to the class yet but my soon-to-be step grandson loves it.It is one he wants read many times. It is a great way to get little boys interested in the alphabet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book!
B Is for Bulldozer is not your average ABC book. Loaded with fun and avoiding the standard format, children recognize the alphabet that is intertwined in the lines, rather than starting them--without even knowing that they are in the process of learning. All while learning the names of big trucks and construction terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new story
After reading the original 5 or 6 Curious George stories to my 2 year old son about a hundred times, it is refreshing to see some new adventures. We just picked up this book today after going to the dump and my son just loves it. The spirit of the original stories is still there while the artwork is slightly more crisp and detailed. I look forward to reading the other new stories!

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Boys Love It!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book and the entire series
My 16 month old daughter, Sophie, was introduced to the Little People Lift-the-flap series with the Farm book when she was 9 months old. She loved that book so much that for easter I purchased school bus and the cars & trains one, just today I bought the newest ones (busy town and the zoo). She gets so exicted after saying "book" when I pick her up and put her in my lap and begin reading the pages (that i now have memorized). She also enjoys lifting the flaps herself. Through these books she has learned a lot of differnt animals including what sounds they make. I would give these books ten stars if I could and plan to begin giving them as gifts to other children.

4-0 out of 5 stars I was ready to write a negative review. But darnit! My daughter loves this one.
I will be honest. I started out hating this book. We have another lift-the-flap book that my daughter (22mos) loves - "Where's Elmo's Blanket?" (I highly recommend that one). That book is fun - each flap is a discovery to uncover, each revealing a special surprise underneath. This one doesn't always do that and I found that annoying (like many of the flaps were cop-outs). For example, there is a hot-air balloon on one page and a smiling rider on it. You lift the flap - and what do you see? A circle (reflecting the round shape of the balloon) and the smiling rider underneath - again! Nothing really changed - except, oh! There's a shape. But that's on the "find the shapes" page. There is another page where you lift the flaps to "find" two starfish, two seagulls, etc. Again, I thought that she was getting cheated by a lazy illustrator or publisher.
3-0 out of 5 stars 2 year oldloves it
My 2 year old absolutely loves this book, but I must say it is one of the most exhausting books we have. There are too many flaps and the content is too much for a 2 year old to take in.We have been breaking it up when we read to her. One night we talk about the colors, the next shapes.Finding the driver that goes with the vehicle is too difficult for her right now, but not too far away from that stage.Good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Big Book of Airplanes
As a 70 year old, I was so fascinated with this Big Book of Airplanes while at the dentist's office that I have since sent one to my grandson for Christmas and recently purchased a second one for a neighbor boy and a third one for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book!
This book is such a great treat to read with my 4-year old plane-crazy son.The photos are so clean and uncluttered. There's a ton of information, so this book would be great for older kids as well. From this book alone, my son has learned so much.We recently visited the Air museum in Chantilly, VA, and he ran around naming the different planes. As soon as we walked in, he said "A Blackbird!".Super book!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son goes bananas over firetrucks (and now this book)!
If your son/daughter is in to firetrucks, this is the book.My two-year old son is bananas over this book.He looks at it all the time and loves rubbing his hands over the textures on each page. The pictures are great and realistic. This is a must-have for the (2-year old) firetruck ethusiast! He/she will have blast with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars For much smaller kids...
I bought this book for my three year old who LOVES fire trucks. Although he does love it, it is a bit small and seems geared toward age 1-2. It is a very short book, just a few pages, and very small for the price. The size is clearly listed on the page, but I wasn't prepared for how small it actually was. Still a cute and entertaining book my son enjoys looking at the pictures and feeling the front grill of the fire truck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great abridged version for the littlest readers
my twin toddlers love this book - the train-shaped board book is interesting for them to explore with their little hands, and the story just long enough to hold thier attention

5-0 out of 5 stars A PerfectVersion for Little Ones
This little board book is indeed a very abridged version of the classic that you may remember from childhood. However, the length is perfect for the shorter attention spans of children aged 6 months through 24 months (the usual target audience for board book publishers).
2-0 out of 5 stars Where's the rest of the story?
This will teach me not to read the reviews carefully before purchase. This is a very abridged version of the classic story: the bright shiny engine and the big strong engine are nowhere to be found. If you're afterthe book you remember from your childhood, find another version.Theillustrations are bright & fun, but there's just too much missing fromthe story. ... Since we have hit our renewal limit, I am now purchasing it for him along with some of the other ones by the same author. The book is wonderfully illustrated and holds my son's attention with its simple yet entertaining words.

My son, almost 3 now, has been helping us read this book to him for most of the past year now.He loves to count the vehicles and pick out the details-like the dog blowing bubbles. It has been his favorite book since the day we got it.I recommend this book to anyone with a little boy who likes his trucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truck lovers everywhere rejoice!
Why I hesitated on buying this book for my 20 month old is beyond me.The vibrant colors used on each and every page are worth the purchase alone.I didn't realize that the book would also teach counting from 1 to 5 since it takes several different vehicles to get the truck unstuck. It is sure to nuture the love of reading in your child and you won't mind reading it over and over either.

My daughter is 16 months old and ADORES this book.I hate to submit to gender stereotypes, but I personally find books about cars, trucks, heavy machinery and trains to be boring, and for some reason I didn't think she'd enjoy it that much either. Not only does she enjoy it, but she has, in her own little way, engendered my appreciation for it also! The bold graphics are the hook but the simple story is really charming. She particularly loves the last page ("beep beep") and pointing out all of the different things she sees there. Her love for this book coincides with her insatiable curiosity about our car--inside and out--and other cars she sees on the road and in parking lots. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Usborne books are great
This is a book my 16 month old daughter asks for time and again by saying choo choo...She can now say words like rusty, glossy, and rough from reading this book and touching the textures.A great "learning to talk" aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best baby book
This is my son's favorite book. I started reading it to him when he was about 3 months old and he still loves it at 9 months. (When his toddler friends visit, they read right along too.) The simple but bright graphics really hold his attention and he now loves to feel the different textures on each page. This was such a hit that we now own That's Not My...: Train, Tractor, Dinosaur, Puppy and Teddy Bear!

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptionally well made board book
My nine-month old loves this book--he spends a lot of time just flipping through the pages and checking out the different textures. Very simple text is balanced by very sturdy, brightly colored pages. Slightly larger than most board books, too. It's a great deal for the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year olds favourite book
Without doubt, my boys most favourite book, he just loves it - he follows what yous say, especially the 'work all day' Can't reccommend it highly enough

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures---cute book
My 2 year old son loved this book when we brought it home from the library so much that I decided to buy it.He is captivated by the bright colorful full-spread pictures. The text is awkward in a couple of places, but that doesn't lessen his enjoyment, just mine as I read it.A worthwhile book for your little boy's personal library because it covers such a big variety of vehicles (even garbage trucks gobble-gobble-gobbling).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
My two year-old loves the book and loves the pictures, but I felt like it didn't always make sense and could have been written better.Sometimes the authors force the text to fit the form they have set up.The Tracker goes "squelch sqelch"??But, the pictures are good and my son LOVES it.I just wish I was happier reading it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars FOR A TODDLER
It teaches the basic about planes.Easy to read outloud book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mommy and Daddy love this one too!
This book is fantastic in its simplicity, but under the short phrases and light graphics, there is a lot of detail. Not only is there a wonderfully diverse cast of characters, but the book starts and ends with the plane in the air.Normally, books have the plane taking off at the beginning and landing at the end, but this thoughtful touch by Byron allows the reader to imagine the plane "living" in the air, as they seem to do, with only brief stops on the ground.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction for little travelers
When we took our 1-year-old across the country via air, we wanted to prepare him for the experience of riding in an airplane.I sought out a book to show him pictures and came across this simple yet substantial book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, the garbage man can!
When you're a children's librarian that has to perform multiple storytimes every week, you acquire a kind of ear for picture books that read aloud well. For example, reading aloud "Horton Hatches the Egg" works well for a single child, but for a large group it's just too darn long. And unless you have a real rhythm going with "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom", don't try to perform it just off the top of your head. Then there are books like Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha's delicious, "Trashy Town".Combining a jaunty rhythmic story about a trash man on the job with the overly accomplished Dan Yaccarino's illustrations, "Trashy Town" falls into the category of "godsend" when it comes to books for big groups o' kiddies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!
I am a nanny for a special needs 4 yr old. It is very difficult for him to stay on task while being read to, but...this one keeps his attention every time. He loves it when I ask him if the trash truck is full yet, and he is starting to chant along with me..........a big accomplishment for someone who has been in speech therapy his whole life! We love this book and plan to share a copy with his speech therapist!

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Great Book!We All Love It!
One of the things that early childhood educators say is important for young children is to be exposed to poems and other rhythmic literature. And it is, they tell us, helpful for kids to learn to recite. It is for these and other reasons that I really, really like this book. Not only is the artwork fun and `cleanly' charming, but the topic is interesting to children and the words are just repetitive enough to make it a great read... and a great recite!
