Nelson's HMS Victory exposed fore-to-aft, larboard to starboard, and deck to holds
This is a great book for getting an overview of the pieces of a first-rate ship of the line.In this case, the British first-rate, triple-(gun)-decker, 104 gun HMS Victory. The Victory was launched in 1765 and commissioned in 1778, but is best known as Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship in the victorious Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 (in which Nelson was killed by an enemy sharpshooter while standing on the quarterdeck).
EXCELLENT VISUAL book

Dorling Kindersley has in the past twenty years quickly established itself as an outstanding publisher of niche books--children's reference books, travel guides, atlases, and the such.What I find so remarkable about a number of their children's books is how enormously satisfying they are for adults as well, even adults who are fairly familiar with the subject matter.One of the better series of books in their impressive list are the Cross-Sections books by Stephen Biesty.As someone who is interested both in the history of ships and the Aubrey-Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brian, I find this one even more interesting than most.Read more

Not a story book.It's a simple book of opposites.
I ordered this book based on Amazon's description that is is a "complete retelling of Disney presentation of a Pixar film latest computer-animated film, Cars."It is definitely NOT that.Instead, it's a simple book of opposites, using pictures from the movie.Here are some examples from the book:"Dirty car.Clean car.Nice car.Mean car.Drive fast, fast, fast.Drive nice and slow."If you are looking for a book of opposites for a child who loves the movie 'Cars', then this book is for you.If you are looking for a book that tells the story, this isn't the one you want to buy.

Welove this book!!
I purchased this book in early June when my son, who was 16 months was just learning about boats. Having a difficult time finding age appropriate boat books for him, I decided on this one and haven't been disappointed. The pictures and drawings are very basicbut we always seem to find lots of things to talk about. He loves this book and has created his own mannerisms for each page and picture. The size of the book is small like other board books and is perfect for little hands to hold and turn the pages. We have read this book some many times the binding is broken and the pages are getting worn. He refers to it as the boat book and just can't seem to get enough of it.I would highly recommend it for any child , you won't be disappointed. We are looking forward to trying some of his other books after the success we had with this one.

My Son's First Favorite
I started reading "Boats" to my son when he was just a few months old. He is now 11 months, and since he was 8-9 months, he has grabbed "Boats" preferentially each night. Even when he is in a bad mood, the bold colors and simple shapes make him light up with a big grin! The variety of boats introduced, the simple illustrations and the multiethnic nature of the stick figures make this book a great find. I believe this will be a favorite for a long time.

My little newphew loves, loves trains.At this time this is his favorite train book.We read only every other page.The other pages are to long, but he loves it.And I like the theme of the story.

Innovative and Entertaining Presentation of Train History
When my son found this book at the local library, I couldn't wait to write a gushing review. I am really delighted with this book. The more we read it together, the more impressed I am with the author and illustrator.

Wonderful verse, but politically incorrect
This is a fun read - I enjoy reading verse, and this flows nicely and doesn't feel forced. But there are sections that would now be considered politically incorrect.Combine it with "The Caboose is Loose" for a young train lover.

Mom's Favorite
I never grew tired of reading this book to my children. Am sending copies to my nephews but I can't part with the original because it is my favorite.

A "Must-Have" for Children
Smokey is one of my two all-time favorite books from childhood (the other is Dr. Seuss' now hard-to-find "The King Who Wore Stilts"). My son loves it, too.Bill Peet's adoration of trains is certainly evident in this loving tale about a little switching engine who changes tracks in life.Its a great tale for adults, too.Read more

Great bedtime book for little boys who love trains!
I bought this book for my (almost) 3 year old son. He is in love with it! It has become part of his bedtime ritual with my husband. He reads it, along with Chugga Chugga Choo Choo by Kevin Lewis every night. My son ask me to read them both to him every day. Thank you for such a wonderful book!

This book will be a classic
What a delightful new book! This is a beautifully written book with a gentle lyrical quality that makes it a pleasure for the reader and the listener alike. As a mother of two toddlers, reading Good Night Engines is a smooth transition to bedtime. I save it for last and always hear "Again, Mommy" which is fine with me. The illustrations are lovely also. I just wish the publisher would release this in a board book which would hold up better to all the wear and tear our copy is likely to receive.

Lyrical writing will lull kids to sleep!

Good Pictures and Explanations
This book has very good pictures with thouroughly explained explanations. Great for a kid that likes cars and wants to learn what the parts do and the history of them.

Not a strong treatment of the subject
Like other volumes in the Eyewitness Books series, Car is full of beautiful photographs and countless interesting tidbits.Initial topics, focusing on both the old-time automobiles as well as how they fit into society, were quite interesting.However, the portions on the innards of the car became technical and rather boring.It reads like a poorly-translated repair manual at times.My wife and I both felt that it should have stayed with the cultural aspects of automobiles--for example, what has its role been in non-European and non-American societies?Also, a stunning omission is the lack of information on future designs and current experimentation.Not recommended except on a cursory basis. ... Another Great Dumpy Adventure!

BORING
My son loves trains, but this book is so boring it doesn't hold either of our interests.Margaret Wise Brown is kind of hit and miss to me.I love Color Kittens, but really don't care for quite of few of her other books including the infamous Goodnight Moon.Pick up Chugga Chugga Choo Choo by Kevin Lewis instead.We love that one.It's fun to read with great pictures.

Not the best
I read it to my 3 year old grandaughter and she was not very responsive. I think it is hard for a 3 year old to relate to. She didn't want to read it again and frankly neither did I.

Lives up to its name
I picked this book out from the huge selection of children's books at the National Air & Space Museum.It has some informative text and lots of attractive pictures.One especially nice thing is that it doesn't justshow what spaceships look like but how they work.For example, it shows(better than some other books I've seen) the steps in a shuttle launch or atrip to the moon (it helped me explain to the kids where the lunar moduleis in the Saturn V, and how the astronauts got into it), and even anastronaut putting on her space suit.For the 4-7 crowd, it's great. ... Magic in the air
Experience flight on the gentle giant, Hindenburg. This book brings her to life. Beautiful drawings and photos make this airship soar again. You will wish that zeppelin travel was still an option. We lost her over Lakehurst but she lives on through fine books like this for all ages.

this is a great book!
I've been looking for a book like this for my niece who has gotten bitten by the "disaster" bug ever since the movie "Titanic" came out.This is an excellent book for older children and young teens.The text really makes the whole Hindenburg tragedy come vividly to life.And the pictures are just "Wow!".I think Ken Marschall has done the illustrations for some other notable large-illustration books including ones on the Titanic, and he outdoes himself again on this book.The detail is superb.I'm highly recommending this book to my friends who are looking for Christmas gifts for their kids.I'm even going to buy a copy for my mom! :-) Books like this don't come any better. ... Fun book!
We had this bok read to us at our library storytime by a firefighter and my 2 yr. old son had to check it out. So far I read it 3-5 times a day but I don't mind.
Great book!
My three year old son loves this book! It has just enough repetition that he can engage in reading it with me.I can't say enough wonderful things about the illustrations.I am an elementary teacher and this book is definitely a good one.

a "must-have" for any home library!
We checked this book out at the library a few weeks ago, and have been renewing it over and over since then. I just don't think we can part with it, because my two kids (2 1/2 & 15 months old) still ask for it every night. However, we're going to have to give it back to the city library, so I logged on this afternoon to buy a copy. We've never had a library book he loved like this one, and I love the perspective on rescue vehicles it gives. Instead of being afraid of the sirens and flashing lights, my two-year-old is learning the positive thought "Help is on the way!" The book is written in rhymes that are assembled well and fun to read, and my son is captivated by the words and the bright, vibrant pictures. It's really a fabulous book for not just little boys who love cars (although it is that, too), but for any small child to teach respect and trust for our various real-life rescue heroes. ... I Could Not Believe It...
This book was read to me in the second grade (that would be about 1964) by my all-time favorite teacher.I haven't seen it or heard of it since.A few years ago, the title just popped into my head and a search yeilded republication.
The Magical Land of Noom
The Magical Land of Noom is the only book I have ever read to my children and grandchildren that fascinated ALL of them without fail.Building one's own flying machine and going to the moon appears to strike a universal five year old chord!!

This Reached My Little Brother When Nothing Else Could
Forty-five years ago they didn't know a lot about dyzlexia and other learning disabilties and my little first-grader brother really had problems learning to read.He even got held back in first grade which made him sad and he actually started to hate reading and books in general. The teachers and our parents treated him like he was dumb and school was turning in to a nightmare for him.Then in second grade he had an angel for a teacher. She was patient and she loved her students and she read THIS special story book to them.My little brother came home every night and at the dinner table he would tell us all about the adventures from the magical land of Noom which is "moon" spelled backward.His eyes sparkled and his speech became animated.He couldn't wait to get to school the next day to hear more.He did so much better that year and he kept trying with books because of that kind teacher and this enchanting story book.Johnny Gruelle, who created Raggedy Ann and Andy, knew how to reach children with his light-hearted, funny adventures and his utterly charming illustrations. A Must Have for Fans of the Television Show
My daughter is a huge Thomas fan, and she loves all of the Read To Me paperbacks.Because the books tell stories from the television series, we read these books at times when my daughter is asking to watch Thomas, but he isn't on.My daughter loves how the illustrations are actual still photographs from the television series.However, sometimes the photos shown don't really depict what is going on in the story.There are a lot of words in these books, with small print.These are definitely books little kids would not be able to read on their own, but they can enjoy the pictures on their own.It is wonderful how each book is comprised of 3 or 4 short stories that toddlers have no problem holding their attention through.

3 year olds love it
I have three year old twin boys who love this book.It is a very basic book- great for introducing children to monstertrucks.It's a favorite bedtime book.

Great for Beginning Readers
Awesome book for beginning readers.Easy to read text and great photos of all your Monster Jam favorites.There's even a one-page golssary at the end with simple terms like engine, body, frame and my son's favorite new term:"mud-bogging".

My toddler's favorite book
I have a Thomas the Tank Engine obsessed 2 1/2 year old, but Mighty the Tug Boat has his ardor when it comes time for bedtime stories.He cheerfully announces "read Mighty!" and thoroughly enjoys the story and the drawings.He traces Mighty's path to the Anchorage, helps me to read the "toot"s and the "vrooms" and the word "tug", and he even is starting to recognize the large-facetype of AARRRUUUGGGGAAAA! (which means "Thank you" in boat).I get to use a silly voice when reading this book, which is fun for me.The typeface and font size and color changes, to give you an idea of what is loud and what is soft, which I haven't seen very much of in children's books.I think it is probably helping with his pre-reading skills (even though I'm mainly focused on just having a fun time reading stories together).I highly recommend this book for the preschool set, especially the ones who like vehicles with facial expressions!

An outstanding book . . .
. . . that suffers only in comparison to its predecessor, I Stink (about a garbage truck).Buy that one first, then try this one, which is rich in illustration and story line but not as engaging or complex in attitude as I Stink.
