Erie Canal
When I first read this book, I didn't know much about the Erie Canal. This book gave me alot of details about what is was like in the 1800's and about barges. Peter Lourie is a great writer and I learned alot
It's like you're with him.
The Erie Canal is a good mix of history and facts making this book interesting and entertaining. It was like you were there with Peter.Peter Lorie teaches you about how the Erie Canal was built and how they used it. It had interesting stories and facts that made this book never dull even for a non-fiction book. This is a great way to teach kids about the Erie Canal. If you are a teacher and doing something on the Erie Canal this book would be for you. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

This book had a lot of interesting and good information. We have heard about the Erie Canal before but we wanted to learn more. And we did. In the book it told us about: the people who carried barges down the Erie Canal and how the mules carried the boats and what they had to go through to get to their destination. Peter Lourie knew this because he traveled himself through the Erie Canal.

Hard as it was, Alice Came Through
Alice Ramsey of Hackensack, New Jersey was twenty-two years old in June of Nineteen Nine, when she started out on her trip driving trip across America withher two sisters-in-law and her friend Hermine as passengers. Narrow roads, dirt roads and roads that were barely there at all challenged them, as did mud, rivers and mountains. And when the car broke Alice was the one who had to get it working again. One has to remember that though this trip was a bit less than a century ago, this was an amazing feet. Women didn't have the vote, were considered much to gentle for such a task and many didn't think Alice would come through, but come through she did, making the trip in fifty-nine days.

Great for Preschoolers!
This is another winner with our family (but more so with my 3 year old). During our visit with relatives in Conshohocken, PA (suburb outside of Philadelphia)we used this book and all we've heard for the past couple of days is L is for LOVE mommy, L is for LOVE, mommy, (I keep saying, it's also for the LIBERTY BELL!).

A "must have" for little travelers!
It's clear that this author has spent considerable time out-and-about with children.His choices are excellent kid-friendly destinations, including some hidden gems that aren't necessarily obvious in your typical Frommers or Fodors guides.My youngster (4 year old boy) especially loves the spaces left for drawing and writing notes.The first page allows you to record the date of your journey, which turns the book into a bit of a journal.I also appreciated the address/phone/website info index in the back.On a recent trip to Disney World, the boy wanted to know if we could play "ABC Disney"... maybe that will be a future edition!?

Great Coloring Book!
I am a substitute teacher.I am always looking for extras I can use in the classroom when we have run out of normalthings to do.Sometimes I have 10-20 minutes to fill before dismissal and this book is perfect! Its educational,tactile and fuels the imagination!

The story of the Bancroft-Arnesen expedition to cross Antarctica
"Ann and Liv Cross Antarctica: Dream Come True" tells the story of two young girls who lived on different continents but shared the same dream.Ann Bancroft, living in Minnesota, and Liv Arnesen, living in Norway, both dreamt of one day crossing Antarctica.They were inspired by the great Antarctic explorers of the past, such as Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen and Robert F. Scott.Of course there were those who said they were crazy, who insisted they would freeze to death, and who actually said it was something women could not do.We paid more attention to the expedition when it was happening than most people since Bancroft hails from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but you do not have to live where it snows half the year to appreciate what she and her friend accomplished in 2001.
My nieces and nephews loved this book!

The variety and color of India
India is a large and diverse country, the home of many ancient and interesting cultures. This book is the travel dialog of a young girl named Anni as she travels through India with her mom and dad. They travel by train, bus, camel and elephant. There are many illustrations and they illustrate the daily street life of India. You see people bathing in the Ganges River, carts being pulled by oxen, people cooking their food in the streets, street vendors hawking their wares, children at school under a tree, and the clothes that the Indians wear. What was most interesting were the pictures of products they encountered in India. Postage stamps, matches, cameras, railway tickets, lottery tickets, honey, fireworks, fabrics, hotel receipts and other products that I did not recognize.
This is a wonderful book!
This is a great book! My son is 9 years old and went to India a couple of years ago.This book vividly brought back all his memories.What I likedbest was that even though it is not written by an Indian, it is soauthentic.The illustrations are just great! I highly recommend it.

Disney Kids
Ummmmm.... This book was ok... The text was to simple and almost no pictures were shown. Also, nobody needs activitys in a travel book! But, it fun to read and learn about disney world.
worth every penny
This is a really useful book, tons of tips, saved me a lot $$ and time. The most valuable thing I learn is to rent a multi-family vacation house with my friends, 16 people for $199 a day. Helpful resource
I read this for my daughters (2 and 5) and found it helpful in deciding which rides to prioritize and which ones to avoid. It gives a kids perspective of what's dark, scary, rough or wild.It's also fun to look at the pictures with the kids although it would be nicer with more photos from Disney and fewer cartoons. ... insight chicago
i found this chicago travel quide to be an exceptional difference in the usual "go here, do this" mentality of most tour books.the writing was insightful and thought-provoking, the information was straight forward and the photographs were exceptional.evidently a well thought out and researched book. even though this edition is somewhat dated (1999) i highly recommend this purchase.

A Celebration of what LA has to offer

My 9-year-old thought this a neat item when he opened it.The activity books contain your basic activities--dot-to-dot, mazes, hidden pictures, etc.The cup, however, is not very sturdy, and the top does not fit back on it at all.The pencil is cute with its topper.A great concept, but not very well thought out as to how well it will travel.Says it will fit in the cup holder, but it's not sturdy enough to stay there. ... My 6-year-old thought this a neat item when she opened it.The four activity books have your standard activities--mazes, puzzles, dot-to-dot, etc.The pencil and topper are cute, looking like a straw in the cup.The cup leaves a bit to be desired.It's not sturdy and the cap that comes with it does not fit back on it, making it difficult to keep it all together.Overall, an original concept with not enough thought put into the finished product. ... Good Overview of the 50 states for kids
