5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift item to be treasured.
This is a great book with wonderful illustrations. The adventures of little Zonk continue in this sequel to Zonk: the Dreaming Tortoise. My daughter really likes Zonk and she often picks this book to read. I think she is attracted to the gorgeous colors and the vulnerable/take charge attitude of the main character. I would recommend this highly to any parent who wants to introduce their children to the wonders of the Sonoran Desert and the Sea of Cortez.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift Book for the Whole Family
We bought this book for our five year old, but it is a delight for the whole family. The map of the secret lagoon on the opening page is an endless delight to our youngest, as are all the beautiful pictures of the turtles, the whale, the bats, the crabs, the vaquita (the world's smallest porpoise and also the world's most endangered porpoise we learn from the book) and all the other sea creatures. The story of Zonk's adventures in the lagoon leading to his homesickness for the desert and his attempt to find his way home keeps the attention of the older children. My wife and I particularly like the spectacular colors of the illustrations and the humor. These are some of the best illustrations of any children's book we have seen. This would be a great gift for any family. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When Newt is stuck in the mud, Turtle pulls him out. When a snake is about to gobble Newt, Turtle warns him. When an alligator approaches Newt, mouth open wide, Turtle causes a distraction. Turtle doesn't mind helping his red-spotted friend out of jams, he's just happy to have a companion in the swamp. But Newt is plagued by the question, "What can I do for Turtle?" He desperately wants to return the many favors his friend does for him, yet no matter how long he perches cross-legged on his thinking rock, he can't come up with the perfect reciprocal gesture. Finally, Newt's day arrives. When Turtle is flipped onto his back by a curious bobcat, Newt comes to the rescue with a lever system of his own amphibian design. Turtle is eternally grateful, and Newt is ecstatic with the joy of having helped a friend. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Be brave, little turtle!
The turtle lives by the side of a stream that has a large hippo living in it.But all the food is soon gone from the turtle's side of the stream. He can see some nice food growing on the other side of the stream, but he's afraid of crossing the stream because of the hippo. He talks to some birds and ants to try to figure out how to cross the stream without having to deal with the hippo. They all tell him to swim, but he's still afraid. Finally, he tries swinging across the stream on a vine like a monkey, but he falls into the stream. To his surprise, the hippo rescues him and helps him across. On each page, most of the content nouns are replaced with icons, so that non-readers can help "read" the story. The book has about 500 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must for school and public libraries !
The combination of child-friendly picture-aided text, soft simple illustrations and a theme of critical thinking for problem solving make this children's book an instant classic!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bartleby rocks!
I really enjoyed reading this book because it was funny and had lots of rhymes. The characters were interesting and it was amazing to see a turtle survive when he had been living as a pet and travels with an alligator. The descriptions of the places Bartleby sees is very imaginative .I especially enjoyed the part when he was trying to save the duck eggs and when they hatched they thought Bartleby was a duck also. I was glad that it ended happy butit leaves you wondering about the rest of the journey.Perhaps there can be a sequel here?

5-0 out of 5 stars Bartleby of the Mighty Mississippi
Bartleby of the Mighty Mississippi was a great book. The characters such as Mother Wak and Bartleby were perfect for the mood of the story and were well described. It was exciting from start to finish and is a great story for anyone of any age. The characters ranges from extremly funny (like the peeper Zip who alway speaks in ryhme) to really creapy (like the alagator Seezer), and at times and Bartleby's wit and quick thinking save him or his friends. I loved it! I have read almost all of Phyllis Shalant's books and this one by far is the best. For those who have read the other books by her this one is a must anf for those who are new to the author will love to start with the one. The suspense can almost kill you sometimes and force you to keep on turing page after page. You'll never want to put this book down! Read this book now!! ... Read more

As a paraprofessional in a public school system, I would highly recommend this book for any young child. This story represents an excellent teaching example to children about the importance of responsibility and their role in accepting responsibility. It also demonstrates how children can benefit from each other's friendship. With spring almost here, I feel every child would benefit having this book. These Franklin books, published by Scholastic, in my opinion, are an excellent educational resource for all young children. ... Franlkin has this new series of books for 1st graders to read . They are all great stories and they are learning books for kids who want to read by themselves, it is not to long but just enough words. It also can tells a story you can go over with the kids for a learning lesson as well,(KIDS CAN READ) books.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's Not a Bad Story... But
This isn't a bad story, pretty good as far as the "Franklin First Readers" go. Franklin finds a special way to share with his friends a book that they all want to read. The dialogue is just right for the intended audience, although still not really true to the normal "Franklin" form.Read more

I use this great story as a lead-in to meetings with my teaching team to remind them to listen 'between the lines' and also that it's important to all relationships to clairfy the 'others' intended meaning - and how easy it is for conversations to get muddled if we make assumptions about what the 'other' meant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless
