3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to its potential
This is the fictional story of Rose and Ruby, 29-year-old conjoined twins living in southern Ontario. They were born with seperate bodies, but their skulls are fused together and they share some vital blood veins, so they can never be seperated. They were raised by adoptive parents: Aunt Lovey (the nurse who assisted in their birth) and her husband Uncle Stash. The girls have seperate jobs at the public library, and lead relatively normal lives.
3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good -- definitely lingers with you...
For some reason, it took me a while to get through this one. Why? I'm not sure. It's not terribly long and the pace doesn't seem all that slow, but I found that I couldn't get through more than a few pages at a time before growing bored. I really shouldn't have been. The idea was really fascinating, the characters endearing. My problem, I believe, was more in how the story was executed. This book definitely could have been a lot better. The author captured the memoir-feel of girls on the brink of death fairly accurately, but it just felt unfinished. Perhaps this is intentional, perhaps not. I was left with a lot of questions in the end. I really wish I knew more about these girls. But, is someone's story EVER really told in its entirety? All the more so when an "autobiography" is really that of two distinct individuals. I was left wanting more, so I suppose the author did do something right: I definitely cared about Rose and Ruby. I was rooting for them up until the end. I guess I just wished for a little more of a polished finished product. Don't let these comments deter you, though. It is still worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars crypted hunters
When their parents go missing in a huge helicopter accident, what is to become of Marty and grace. Apparently they have an uncle they've never even heard of, and he seems to be a nut obsessed with fake creatures like the Sasquatch and the loch ness monster. They think to them selves as they walk to there uncles front door. `Knock' knock'.

Editorial Review

In the city of Aramanth, the mantra is, "Better today than yesterday.Better tomorrow than today." Harder work means the citizens of Aramanth can keepmoving forward to improved life stations--from Gray tenements and Orangeapartments, upwards to glorious mansions of White. Only some families, like theHaths, believe more in ideas and dreams than in endless toil and ratings. WhenKestrel Hath decides she is through with the Aramanth work ethic, she is joinedin her small rebellion by her twin brother Bowman and their friend Mumpo.Together, they set the orderly city on its ear by escaping Aramanth's walls foran adventure that takes them from city sewers to desert sandstorms. Guided by anarchaic map, they know that if they can find the voice of the Wind Singer, anancient and mysterious instrument that stands in the center of Aramanth, theycan save their people from their dreamless existence. But the voice is guardedby the dreaded Morah and its legion of perfect killing machines, the Zars. Arethree ragtag kids any match for an army of darkness? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wow!!! really great book!!!
Wow this book is a really great book. If you like a lot of adventure then this book is for you. Well this book is about the Hath family. The hath family lives in a city called Aramath. Aramath is a very complex city. There are levels to which the familys are rated and their homes are placed. The Hath family lives in the orange district which is the third level from from the end. Its not a very good district. Anyway, Kestrel and her twin brother Bowman share the power to communicate with each other using their minds. Their father Hanno Hath is a librarian and he knows everything about the history of aramath and the myths. Ira Hath is a stay at home mom taking care of the baby child Pinto. Now in the middle of Aramath there is a giant statue of the wind singer. The old story of the wind singer goes: "About a hundred years ago, or so, the wind singer used to sing a wonderful song that made everyone forget all of their problems and always be happy. Until the city of Aramath heard that the awfull army of the Zars was coming to attack the city in order to steal the wind singers voice. When the city heard of this great fate the surenderd the voice to the zars and everything cahnged after that." Now the city runs of levels and examination. But that wasnt't the case for Kestrel. She figured that if she could get out of the city then she could find the wind singer's voice and return happiness and peace the the city of Aramath. So she decided to leave the city acomponied by her brother and a tagolong classmate named Mumpo. Once they were on the otherside of the city gates the journy began.
3-0 out of 5 stars A tad cliche
I read this book quite a while ago and although it is undoubtedly entertaining it has a tendancy to be a bit cliche with the usual story of the world being in danger and the only one who can save it is a child. Snore snore. Also the ending had a feeling that it was being rushed as though the author was bored of the book and just trying to get it finished quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars I can't describe how bad this book is
Reading this book is like watching the Brady Bunch, 1984 and the Planet of the Apes all at once. Familiar elements that fit together with all the harmony of claws on a blackboard. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Journey of a girl
I read this when I was young, and I remember feeling like I had found a friend. In this book, I found a character who struggled with the same issues with family members, self worth, impossible crushes, and God that I did.But instead of dwelling on the struggles, we see the difficult childhood of this girl pass.
2-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but not recommended for kids
This is a well written book, however, I feel I should point out several issues I have with this book, which seems to follow the formula of the "modern teen problem novel".This novel "explores difficult emotions" such as selfishness, jealousy, and alienation from God. All characters who are devoutly religious are portrayed as either uneducated or mean, and any "enlightened" characters or heroes are portrayed as not being religious.( Does anyone really know any Christians who go around , Bible-in-hand, accusing other women of "whoredom"?) And what modern teen "problem novel" would be complete without some sexual themes, and at least a brief discussion of menstruation ?At the book's end, our main character chooses to continue in her career after the birth of first child. Parents should also be advised that Sara Louise's "coming of age" includes rejecting religion.( Although, to be fair, the book does not portray Sara as a happy person, but I think this subtlety will be lost on children.)Judging by other reviews, most child readers did not pick up on the fact that Caroline was a much kinder and more likable person than Sara Louise. An adult reader who is wise to the anti-religious bias may enjoy the book ( if they're not grossed out by the idea of a 14 year old having a crush on a 70 year old man). If you are looking for a book about a normal child, with normal child feelings, dealing with her "perfect" sister, read Little House on the Prairie and leave this book on the shelf. Appropriate reading for adults, who can understand the bias against religion, but not at all recommended for children.
4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review on Jacob Have I Loved
Just recently, I have read the Newberry Medal-winning novel Jacob Have I Loved written by Katherine Paterson. This book describes the life of young, Sara Louise Bradshaw, the twin of the popular and more appreciated, Caroline Bradshaw, growing up on the small island of Rass. All her life, Louise felt as if Caroline has deprived her of everything: their family's love, her friends, and her dreams for a successful future. Then, when Captain Wallace - who had mysteriously returned after fifty years of disappearance - finds a way to obtain a scholarship for Caroline in Baltimore, Louise is left to tassel with her sharp-mouthed grandmother and take on the traditional job of a male as a waterman. Unfortunately, this did not satisfy the woman she was becoming. Louise must learn to fight past her jealousy of her sister's shadow and figure and find her way to place Caroling cannot reach. I learned of this book from a friend and found it interesting from their description. After reading, however, I realized it is very emotional and gets very deep into the feelings of jealousy and hatred. In addition, it also has a large use of vocabulary. So I would recommend it to anyone who is thirteen or older preferably to the female gender but some men may also find this story appealing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb fantasy for youth
I am 60 years old and have just retired as an elementary and middle school librarian.I love to read and totally adore reading fantasy.I am one of those 60 year olds who feel as though they are 13.The Children of the Lamp series really took hold of my heart as I listened to both on tape.P. B. Kerr is very creative and has a gift for providing a very exciting setting. His books leave you in suspense as to what is going to happen in the next book.I can't wait for book 3.My granddaughters are now reading the book and loving every word. That, of course, is the real test to me - how well my 10 and 11 year old granddaughters enjoy the book. They love fantasy like their grandmother and are avid readers.John and Phillippa are good role models for children as they are good and kind. They are highly intelligent and have a love for learning as well as adventure. As twin siblings, they are very devoted to each other and their family. You cannot help but love them.I highly recommend this series to our youth and to all wannabe youths like myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Entense Rescue Adventure
In this book there are two 12-year-old twins, John and Phillipa Gaunt who have recently discovered that they are from a family of djinn, or more frequently used: "genies". They are having trouble this winter since they live in New York City. There is harsh, cold weather, which all djinn hate since they are made from fire. They can't use their powers in cool weather because they don't have enough energy, but a friend comes along to show them a trick to boost up their magic, just take a trip to the sauna!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Ironwood Tree
My baby brother reads Spiderwick and from his giggles I know he likes it. The Spiderwick Chronicles is one story spread over five books. The books are very short, about 120 pages each with many illustrations, and it took me a little over an hour to read each book.

Editorial Review

Having suffered through a string of appalling foster homes (the spittingCranbepps; scary, toothless Mr. Dreep who locked them in his cellar; and themean Burgerton boys), 13-year-old orphan Dallas and his twin sister, Florida, have pretty much given up on ever finding a happy home. So when an eccentricolder couple enters their lives, providing such adventures as a riverexpedition, a treasure hunt (of sorts), and a whole lot of remarkable meals:"beat-the-blues broccoli," "anti-cranky crumpets," and "getting-used-to-kids- again stew," the twins take a while to warm up. Florida's language teems withoutrageous, telling negativity--everything is "putrid"--and even dreamy Dallasis inclined to bouts of doubt. But warm up they do, to the continual delight ofreaders of all ages.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ruby Holler
The book called Ruby Holler is a very good book, and it makes you want to keep reading. The plot is about two 13-year-old "trouble twins" named Dallas and Florida. They have been bouncing around from foster home to foster home. They have been living with Mr. and Mrs. Trepid--their mean foster parents. One day an older couple named Tiller and Sairy came to the Home. They decided to take Florida and Dallas to their home in beautiful Ruby Holler.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ruby Holler
Dallas and Florida, twin orphans, lived at the Boxton Creek Home most of their lives except for a few scarey foster homes. Now they are at a home in beautiful Ruby Holler with some verv nice foster parents named Tiller and Sairy who take them on amazing adventures! Kelsy, age 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book that you'll enjoy while you're reading it, and feel good about afterward
Ruby Holler is the story of "the trouble twins", 13-year-old Dallas and Florida, who have spent their lives living in the dilapidated Boxton Creek Home. They've had many failed foster parent experiences, some terrifying, some grim, and they are very wary of adults. They remind me a bit of Tony and Tia Malone in Escape to Witch Mountain (another pair of twins who seem unable to keep out of trouble, and who no one seems to want).

1-0 out of 5 stars Arrgh!! If you like this, try the original
I spotted this book while browsing in a bookstore recently and was appalled when I saw the title. My friend, Jeromy Cox, a well known multiple Eisner award nominated comicbook colorist, published a comicbook in 2002 titled "Vampyrates". The concept, scripting and groundwork for it however began many years before that, and I witnessed its progress over time. As you might imagine, it is about a band of Vampire Pirates who terrorize the High seas.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read!
Liking Vampirates was a total surprise to me.I am not one who likes most vampire books, nor do I read many books set out at a sea, but Vampirates was very intriguing. The story is about two siblings, twins, who flee there home after their fathers' death.Eventually, they get separated- One finds themselve on a boat of pirates, while the other finds themselve on a boat full of Vam-Pirates. There's a good mix of both action and sentimental-ish moments.Chapters alternate between each different viewpoint, which keeps readers interested.

5-0 out of 5 stars Puzzles left by the strange Ulysses Moore may help in this fine audio mystery
Michael Page's reading brings to life the story of Jason, Julia and Rick, time travelers to ancient Egypt who are trapped in the past, unless they can locate the long-lost map of Kilmore Cove hidden somewhere in Egypt. Puzzles left by the strange Ulysses Moore may help in this fine audio mystery.

my book came in the mail and i got my glass of water and munchies and sat down to read. wonderful fun and adventure. i intend to purchase all the future books to pass to my niece. it has the same mystery writing as the first with lots of twists and turns. wonderful escape telling in tunnels and the villian is nasty as she should be. i give it a 5 for there is no naughty words or parts any child couldn't read. good great fun and adventure with thrills and wonders through out the book. hope all the future books are as fun as these first two. enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars It gets beter
The storyline in my point of veiw is spectacular. It made me feel like I was realy in Eygpt. And just as the first book " The Door to time" had amazing illustrations. Each one made me think harder. Over all this book was great.the only thing that somone can is bad is that it made you think. to much. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed but a little miffed
The adventure ends with you wanting to buy the next book. The next book "The Long-lost Map" has a number 2 on the spine, it would of been nice for them to have made it clearer that "The Door Of Time" is number 1 or a Part/Episode 1 of the adventures of the twins and Rick. They do make obscure references to further documents of Ulysses Moore in the email at the start and end. Still good read for the kids, and I love the cover art work and ones found through out the book. But I think a paperback version would be better value for money considering the length of the story and it ending when the story is really getting going. Nevertheless I will be buying the next book "The Long-lost Map" ASAP (and in hardback as they do look great)!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun, witty fantasy adventure. This book is rockin' fine!
The Door to Time is a wonderful book.I bought it for my grandson. He's twelve and thinks he's too big for me to read it to him, so let me borrow it when he was through.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for young readers.
I am a middle school science teacher.I have a lot of students who do not like to read.I am always looking for books that will grab a student's attention. This book definately fits the bill.I was impressed at how easy this book is to read but was still able to keep me wanting more.I enjoyed reading about the three young adventurers and greatly anticipate the second book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Owns a piece of my soul
I read the book for the first time when I was 9 years old. I dig it out every few years and re read it. To this day it still has the power to reduce me to tears.
4-0 out of 5 stars A portrait of friendship
Published in the 70's, this book was an instant children's classic in American literature. This book deals with the friendship of a boy, Jesse, and a girl, Leslie, both of whom are social outcasts.Coming from different families and upbringings, they form a friendship that bears the strain of tragedy. This reviewer read this book while in elementary school; but revisited it once I heard that a movie was being made about it.The book is very good, and is great for children to read in today's culture where intergender relationships are often characterized in terms of sex.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad, yet beautiful
One of my favorite parts of parenting is rediscovering wonderful children's literature with my daughters. I had heard of this book but never read it, so when my daughter chose it for a book report I seized the opportunity to read an award-winning book that I had neglected.
