4-0 out of 5 stars Baby's Favorite Book
This is a wonderful collection of Dr. Seuss stories. My kid loves to read and re-read the classics such as 'The Grinch' and the more offbeat stories like 'Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book'. The essays are also fun to read while looking at the original artwork.
4-0 out of 5 stars nice collection
This book is marketed for children, but it's better suited to adults who want a collection of stories without buying all the individual books, and who like the accompanying essays (they are fun!). It's less suited for children due to its unwieldly size, including the difficulty of opening the book flat. It would work fairly well for reading to one or two children sitting next to the reader, but for reading to a group, where showing the pages is vital, this volume is too awkward to handle. I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't include Fox in Sox and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok for review..
It is great to have all these stories in one place. I almost forgot how fun they were to read, but it was something I wanted to have for Grandmothering...

4-0 out of 5 stars A Tongue-in-Cheek Classic
Somehow Lawson takes a figure who is already rather easy to relate to in Franklin and makes him all that much more approachable through the absurd suggestion that a little mouse had as much to do with the great man as anyone. It's pretty easy to imagine how some of these things might just have happened the way Amos describes them and to imagine that fur hat everywhere in Philadelphia and Paris.Of course, the existence of real Parisian medals depicting Franklin in said hat helps....

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good book
This book was pretty good but its not an attention grabber. I had to read this for a school assignment and it wasn't a book that I would normally read. It was boring but educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't the movie version available?
It's easy to love sweet little Amos, the Mouse in Colonial American who befriended Ben Franklin and through him delivered the world its greatest inventions, including electricity.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Life in Dog Years
This is an autobiography about Gary Paulsen. He talks about nine different dogs in this book. He talks about them, because they have helped him threw hard times when he was kid and still now as an adult. He picks them up off the street and from the pounds. He is an animal lover because of his younger experiences with animals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I read this book as a diversion from my usual reading, and consumed it in one sitting at a Starbucks. This was a great book about the life of a man and his friends. Paulsen love for dogs and animals seems to be rooted in his isolation as a young boy, as he moved from place to place, not fitting in new communities, and living with highly dysfunctional, neglectful parents. As a child and teen, he bonded with the dogs that became a part of his life and his friends. As an adult his affection for his childhood friends never left him and he seeks to befriend those that befriended him in his early life. My Life in Dog Years will make you laugh and cry, and remind you that friendships can be made and found in the most unlikely times and places. Read and enjoy! Excellent job, Mr. Paulsen.

Can we stand firm for JUSTICE in wartime?HOW CAN WE NOT??
5-0 out of 5 stars Why don't we learn about this?
I was assigned the topic of Japanese Americans and the internment camps for my final paper.First of all, I think this book accounts for my great grade. The book is full of information and photographs. Ms. Oppenheim also makes the story of what happened so clear.I am ashamed that my country did such a thing to their own citizens. It's scary really. It's also weird that not that many people my age even know about it.This should be taught more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dear Miss Breed
In many ways, "Dear Miss Breed" may be the best way to share the JA WW II experience with middle and high school students as the letters leave a personal touch to the story; yet there are plenty of accurate historical references about WW II events that affected the JA community.Even if you have read every book about life in Camps for JAs, Miss Breed's story just may move up the list and become your favorite book on this topic...everyone should read "Dear Miss Breed." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A warm oportunity to reflect on special people and places.
Donald Crews departs from his usual simple text about such things as trucks and boats to share his childhood memories. The bold and colorful illustrations we usually find in his work are replaced by soft gentle colors and lines. Perhaps my endearment to this book stems from my own fond memories of riding the train back to my grandmother's home in Davenport, Iowa. Yet, there is more to this story than shared memories of days gone by. Even young children have memories of warm moments with someone special. As a first grade teacher I share this book with my students. It is a delight to see the special smiles that illuminate their faces, like the sweet smell of Spring, when they think of their special someone. For some children they think, like Crews, of grandma and her special cooking, for others their thoughts are of a visit to mom in a distant state. There thoughts are not meloncholy, like Crews, they are pleasant reminders of the treasures we find in each other. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beat the Street
In this work three African American doctors tell the story of how they used their brains, loyalty, and few good chances to escape their tough urban neighborhood, go to college and medical school, and become doctors. The book is targeted for an adolescent audience, although there is an adult version, called "The Pact" available. At the end of each chapter, the doctors give some advice to young people who want to achieve more than those around them expect.
1-0 out of 5 stars ew.
I, for one, am not a fan of inspirational stories. I honestly thought that this is one of the most studpid books I ever read. I had to read this for summer reading and I really did not enjoy it. At all. Yay, so three boys from the ghetto became doctors. Incredible. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. Don't waste your time. It's stupid.

4-0 out of 5 stars We Beat the Street
A truely inspiring story, who's characters quickly gain your empathy and respect. Following the three men through there lowest and happiest moments is what makes the book so real. This is a great tool for teenagers/young adults who may need the extra push, or example to follow to drive them toward their dreams.A perfect reason for keeping Affirmative action alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a story based on the true story of Mary Jemison. I found the fact that it was true very interesting, especially since you can really visit some of the places she lived. It is sad and disturbing and(like the one review said)she is separated from everyone, but it's true! She was terribly sad, the Indians did do horrible things, and she was separated from everyone she knew. Even though this book is true, it is still very entertaining. I think it does a good job of developing the interior conflict: Is she and Indian or a pale-face? I think this book will be loved by all who appreciate historical-fiction.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Wonders of Indian Captive
The book Indian Captive was a very interesting book. What I liked about the book was that the autor told a lot about the Indain way of life, the author showed great emotion in his writing, and described the scenery very well. The only reason that this is not a five star book is because I thought that the author asked too many questions in the story, not in dialoge but in the story. Sometimes the author didn't even answer the questions. I really enjoyed Indian Captive and hope whoever reads this, buys the book, and reads it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indian Captive Review by LEA
This book is about an amazing (...) girl named Mary Jemison aka Molly to her family and friends. The story begins at her home in March Creek Hollow. Honestly the beginning is boring,it doesn't get really good until she gets to the Indian village at least that is my opinion. Anyway after being taken from here family she must learn to be an Indian, but how can she give up her english ways? All through the book she tries to escape only to fail time and time again but when she is given the chance to leave can she really leave the her Indian brothers and sisters? Read the book to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Life Of Thomas A. Edison
Thomas A. Edison is about a boy who likes to ask questions. He came into his gooses nest and sat on her egg. Isn't that weird. He wanted the egg process to go faster. Tom is a good boy. You would like this book if you read it. It is funny and it is exciting. While you are reading it, you won't even know that you are learning. I was supposed to read it as a book report and I am glad I chose to read it. Tom was dedicated to make what he is working on come true. He messed up a couple of times like the time he told his friend to drink these two chemicals mix together so his friend could fly like a bird. Instead, hisd friendf got sick. I laughed. I give this book 5 points!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Wizard of Menlo Park"
Have you ever tried to sit on an egg and hatch it? Thomas Alva Edison did! He was a young who was curious about the world around him. He was born in a city near New York City. His family did not have much money, but they made a great effort to send young Thomas to school. At his first school that he attended, he was expelled for asking too much questions to her teacher. At his other 2 schools that he went too, he was also expelled for asking too many questions. At a young age Thomas would sell newspapers at a railroad. At the young age of 23, Thomas invented the phonograph, which is the grandfather of the Compact Disk. Then a couple of years later Thomas after 7 attempts invented the Light bulb. Years after inventing the light bulb, New York City was entirely lighted by light bulbs thanks to Thomas. He was even called "The wizard of Menlo Park".4-0 out of 5 stars Thomas A. Edison
This book is wonderful for ages 8 - 12 who want to read about Thomas Edison's childhood and important things about his adult life. Each chapter has exciting stories that happened to this inquisitive boy.He was a very curious boy who would always ask questions. His parents, mother in particular, are very supportive of his curiosity. There are interesting events that happen like when Thomas gets his first ice skates and when he rides on a steam engine train. If you are interested in the world around you and maybe interested in science, then this is the book for you. It's fascinating to read about Thomas Edison as a young boy and as he grows into an adult because the only info I had before was a listing of his inventions.By the way, it would be very fast reading for an adult, and it might be nice if your child is reading this that you read it, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!!
This book is my absolute favorite. I first read it in 4th grade. then i read it again, then i read it in 5th grade 2 more times, then i read it in 6th one more time. It really captured my attention, I remeber that i could never stop reading it. It may have been a little difficult for me in 4th grade but as i read it again and agian it made much more sense, and it really made my day. i recommended it to all my friends...well just one, but she said she loved it. If you don't read this book your seriously missing out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Freedom of Riding!
This book is really good because it tells about Charlotte's life without her parents. In the beginning Charlotte's parents are killed in a wagon crash. Charlotte runs away from the orphanage and this is where the adventure begins. Her determination leads her to freedom. Her childhood friend was seperated but kept his promise to be together again as adults. I would really recommend you buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars He rode a blazing saddle, a torch to light the way
I was recently at the ALA Conference in New Orleans sitting in on a Random House presentation at an hour that, to me, was far too early. As a result, I was having difficulty keeping awake, and only the stack of goodies on my seat (free books and the like) were keeping my eyes occupied. Still, all the upcoming books from Random House sounded good. There were some favorite authors I'd been wanting to read and some new names I wanted to check out. But it really wasn't until I heard someone explain what The Legend of Bass Reeves by Gary Paulsen was that I found myself awake and all my cylinders clicking. When I heard the story behind this book it was akin to an electric current in my bloodstream. Bass Reeves. Perhaps the only truly heroic man to bring law and order to the Old West. A man who never shot first, never was wounded in a gun battle, and was renowned for his steady trigger finger. Now here's the kicker. Not only was this man real, but he was a former slave as well. I was hooked then and after reading this book I'm still as hooked as ever. I may have some quibbles with how Paulsen chose to present his information, but you cannot get around the fact that there's some juicy info and child-friendly tidbits filling up this fabulous children's title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where have you gone, Teddy Roosevelt, our nation turns...
Jean Fritz is perhaps best known for her short picture book biographies of Revolutionary War Heroes.I was anxious to read this particular book, and to my great surprise found it to be much longe than her usual fare.Just the same, the book carries the same spirit and adept interesting writing Fritz has employed on her other ventures.I had some disappointments with this book, it's true, but all in all I think it's a fine biography and the best one out there for any kid interested (or required) in reading about our odd twenty-sixth President.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read!
This was such a joy to read.I just couldn't put the book down.I had no idea that Teddy Roosevelt had an affliction that he overcame, thanks in part to his ambitious father.5-0 out of 5 stars Bully for you, theodore roosevelt!
An excellent chidren's biography of theodore roosevelt, which will be enjoyed by people of all ages.My only criticism is that the books title should be 'Bully for you, theodore roosevelt,' instead of 'Bully for you, teddy roosevelt,' a name which to him was anathema. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helen Keller

These books bring back my childhood. It's always good to be able to do that from time to time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rose becomes a Socialist
I found the book interesting but my 8 and 6 year old daughters - huge fans of the Laura years and most of the Rose years -- found it to be boring.Parents should be prepared to discuss some of the historical aspects of this books, such as, women's suffrage, discrimination, turn of the century working conditions, and socialism which are all reoccurring topics in the book.I was a little surprised that the case for socialism was presented without any counter arguments, especially in light of the adult Rose being so opposed to socialism.(I highly recommend Rose's The Discovery of Freedom" if you are interested in learning about her libertarian views.)I can't imagine Roger Lea MacBride (who died while this book was in rough draft) would not have offered up a character to counter the pro-socialist message. If your daughter reads this book, I suggest you also make available Rose's 1936 Saturday Evening Post article "Give Me Liberty" where she makes the case for liberty and individualism. It is an autobiographical account of how she almost became a card-carrying member of the Communist Party, but because of her experiences as an international reporter became convinced that socialism leads down the road to serfdom (See F. A. Hayek's Road to Serfdom.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Got a Lot from this Book
This is definitely one of my fave books(i'm 14). I think I first read this book when I was 9 or 10, but I wasn't mature enough to really get all of it yet. Rose is definitly growing up, separating from her mother, making good and bad friends, falling in love, taking big risks and thinking about her future. Frankly she is dying to ditch her boring, ordinary life in her small Ozarks town, but she also has to decide what she is going to do about Paul, her first love, who is gone most of the time. Basically it is a coming-of-age story set in small-town turn-of-the-century America. I liked it especially for the historical value, and would recommend it to anyone who liked the Laura books, or likes historical fiction for young adults. ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "BLACK BOY"beats the system !
Richard Wright grew up in the early 1930s . . . thinking that a library card was the TICKET TO FREEDOM. His mother used 'funny papers' to teach him to read but his formal education went only through 9th grade. A chance for a job took him to Memphis, Tennessee, and there he continued to yearn for books.
5-0 out of 5 stars How young Richard Wright got to read books from the library
Richard Wright is an African American author best known for his novel "Native Son" and his autobiographical work "Black Boy."In "Richard Wright and the Library Card" author William Miller fictionalizes a story from the latter work that tells of how Wright was inspired to become a writer.Growing up in the Mississippi of the segregated South of the 1920s, Wright was only allowed to go to school through the 9th grade. His mother had taught him to read by using the newspaper and Richard read everything he could find.At the age of 17 Wright traveled north to Memphis, where he got a job sweeping the floors and doing other jobs in the office of an optician.Wanting to check out books at the local library Wright is told he cannot do so because he is black. The only things he can read are old books and newspapers that he finds in the trash. But then, with the help of a white co-worker, Wright is able to come up with a strategy for circumventing the rules.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for young readers, or anyone interested in Haiti
Not only is this a well-written, interesting story of a young girl's life in Haiti, it truly gives the reader a taste of what Haiti is like today. My daughter, age 10, and I read it together, after my first trip to Haiti on a medical mission. I felt like I was back in Haiti, and loved the description, historical information and perspective of a young girl watching her life and country change. Behind the Mountains is written in diary form, and really draws the reader in, allowing her to see things through the eye's of the young narrator as her family is uprooted and moved to another country.

4-0 out of 5 stars Henry Ford:Young Man with Ideas
I liked the book, but I wish they had more dates than just when he was born.It would have been fun to know how old he was when he did or invented certain things.I think I am like him because I like to find ways to make work easier.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is ok but, I would like more detail though.
I would like more detail like on how he was born and when he died. I like this book because it talked about all his jobs and what he made and when he made it. ... Read more
