5-0 out of 5 stars A Break with Charity
A Break with Charity is an amazing and enlightening book. It brings you into the time of the Salem Witch Trials and makes you feel as if you were there. The perspectives given in the book are brilliant as you watch entertainment in a highly restrictive world go from seemingly innocent to powerful and deadly.

Editorial Review

Forced to leave her sunny Caribbean home for the bleak Connecticut Colony, Kit Tyler is filled with trepidation. As they sail up the river to Kit's new home, the teasing and moodiness of a young sailor named Nat doesn't help. Still, her unsinkable spirit soon bobs back up. What this spirited teenager doesn't count on, however, is how her aunt and uncle's stern Puritan community will view her. In the colonies of 1687, a girl who swims, wears silk and satin gowns, and talks back to her elders is not only headstrong, she is in grave danger of being regarded as a witch. When Kit befriends an old Quaker woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond, it is more than the ascetics can take: soon Kit is defending her life. Who can she count on as she confronts these angry and suspicious townspeople? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bewitching story
This is one of my favorite books. I first read this book while in middle school and have re-read it so many times that I can recite some of the passages! The story of the girl who leaves her island home and must adjust to the harsh New England environment struck a chord with me, as I was a military kid and always moving from place to place. This story is about a girl who finds herself in a new environment that goes against everything she has ever learned or experienced, and she must learn who she is in order to survive this new land. It's also a romance story, and an intriguing story that shows what can happen when people become so closed-minded about what is "right" and "proper" that they refuse to look past a person's supposed subversive actions in order to really see or understand that person.Highly recommended reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars the witch of blackbird pond-elizabeth george spheare- by andra prior
I read the witch of blackbird pond.I didnt like or dislike this book.It had fantastic chapters an awful chapters. The most awfu scenes in this book are where everyone gets judgemental. The overall message in this book wasshard to figure out but i thought it was: never let someone judge you for who you appear to be.I would recomend this book to people who like adventurous historical fiction books. ... I am continually amazed at how children's books offer detail and insight into daily life that no stout history book can provide. 5-0 out of 5 stars Values for today from a tale of 1627
This is a wonderful, wonderful book. It will help you teach your children about hard work, perseverance, and family. My children want it read to them again and again.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for learning about life as a pilgrim boy!
This book took us back to 1627.We learned all about Samuel Eaton's first day as a man.He told us all about the hard work he had to do in the fields. It was so interesting to read a story that used different wordsfrom long ago.The pictures were awesome! They showed us the clothing thepilgrims wore, what their house looked like, and the hard work everybodydid. We thought it would be difficult to be a pilgrim boy!We thinkeveryone should read this book because you can learn a lot about how thepilgrims lived.Read this wonderful book! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Bull Run
Bull Run- the first major battle of the Civil War. This book by Paul Fleischman describes that battle in the perspective of sixteen people. These people are very different from each other, all the way from northerners to southerners, from slaves to military leaders. Each point of view brings out a different purpose for the war, and gives a new meaning to controversy. All the people in the book are related to each other so much, but are very deeply divided. This book does describe the battle and events leading to the Battle of Bull Run, but has very little flow. It is not a very good book, and is not recommended as a source of reference.
5-0 out of 5 stars Characters come alive!
Paul Fleischman has a unique way of intertwining characters and their perspectives of the Civil War.Great for classrooms and building presentations. This is a great way to teach summarizing by reading all of the vignettes for one character and summarizing their involvement with Bull Run.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mondo monologues sans monotony
You can accuse Paul Fleischman of a lot of things.Laziness is not one of them. When I told the kids in the bookclub I run that we were going to be reading something called "Bull Run" by a Mr. Paul Fleischman, they were quick to inform me that they were already familiar with him."He's the guy who wrote, 'Joyful Noise'!", cried one delightedly.I agreed that this was indeed his best-known work but that, "Bull Run" was probably going to prove to be a little different from a poetry book of insect noises. This turned out to be a particularly foresighted statement when some concerned parents informed me that they were not comfortable with the violence of this book and would rather that their children not read it.I was caught a little unawares.I shouldn't have been.If you are one of those concerned parents, allow me to tell you that yes, there is violence in "Bull Run".Heck, you're not going to have a whole book about a single exceedingly bloody battle without some blood actually making it into the text. However, the battle violence is brief and the story a compelling one.If you've a kid just hankering for the glories of combat, this should snap them out of THAT little fantasy right quick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuck In Nuetral
Stuck In Neutral is a must read for anyone in any age group. The story is about a boy named Shawn who is 14-years old. Shawn was born with Cerebral Palsy. His dad, Sydney E. McDaniel, left him when he was just a baby. Sidney E. McDaniel wrote a poem about his son a while after he left.He then won a Pulitzer Prize and got really famous. In the beginning of the book Shawn stated that because his dad didn't like that his son has a disorder, that he was going to "end his pain."
3-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I woudn't recommend this book to anyone because it gets a little redundent. The story is about a boy wh was born with a busted blood vessel in his brain that affected his abiliy to move a single muscle, which takes a real toll on his family. They live in a small tow in seattle, with practicly no father because he is to busy on TV shows and adio shows because of his poetry about his son.So his dad can't take it anymore and he decides to end the boys suffering by killing him.The story is told in the boys eyes and we soon realize that the boy is not really suffering but he cant tell his dad that because of his problem with his brain. And we are the only people who get to see this side, the only peple who get to hear him speak.Read the book to ind out the ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stuck in neutral
Stuck in Neutral, by Terry Trueman, is a book about a kid named Shawn McDaniel. Shawn is a 14-year old kid who is fully paralyzed. Although he can't move or talk, Shawn is intelligent. He can remember anything he hears without meaning to remember it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It had tons of action!
I liked By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman because it has a lot action. It's set in 1849. The main characters names are Jack and Praiseworthy. The book starts on a ship that's racing another ship to California. Jack hides a pig so the cook can't make Sunday dinner out of the pig. Jack and Praiseworthy get robbed several times. They go to the mining camps and try to strike it rich. I like the part where Jack and Praiseworthy go propecting. I recommend this book to ages 9 and up. If you like adventure and the Gold Rush, you would like this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute
Me like this book. When I got my potty, I weared it on my head like the little girl in the book. Mommy said it looked so cute.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cute way to introduce the potty
At my house, we read this with a silly British accent. It's a cute book that introduces the basic terminology of the potty with a little girl who demonstrates its use. I do think it helped my daughter be inspired to use the potty just like the girl in the book. My sister was embarrassed to read it to her because it shows (with a non-detailed illustration) what goes into the potty and where it comes out. I'm all for telling my child the truth and this does it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thanksgiving Classic Updated With New Illustrations!
The previous edition of this book, published in 1973, has been a favorite introduction to the Pilgrims for primary students in our school for many years. Written at about a third grade reading level, it works as a readable chapter book, as well as a quick read-aloud. The black, white and turquoise drawings in the older version were adequate, but the text always deserved more detailed and interesting illustrations. While I have not see this new edition, it appears that this situation has now been remedied.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Show Way and Soonie's story
Soonie's family made Show Way quilts, ones that would show illiterate slaves the way to freedom. In this Newberry Honor book, Jacqueline Woodson takes children on a trip into the past back to the days of her great-granmother Soonie and beyond into the days of slavery.Readers will read about slavery, the days after the slaves were freed, the fight for equal rights during the sixties to present day to when the author's daughter was born. As a white person, I struggled a bit with the language used in places, but enjoyed the story that told of generations of black women and their strength and courage and love for their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must own
My seven year old borrowed Show Way from our neighborhood library. He read it to me and I immediately said this is a book that we must own for our children's library shelf.I told a friend about it also.It is a great read for story times at family reunions. It's a book of celebration, courage and freedom. After reading it to my three year old, I lifted my baby girl up and told her "I love that girl-child up"! What a wonderful read!, and children learn about the tradition of quilts and how they showed the way to freedom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Folk history at its finest
Jacqueline Woodson has created another powerful, thought-provoking, personal yet universal story.Combined with Hudston Talbott's equally poignant and vibrant illustrations, Show Way is by every measure a most worthy Newbery Honor winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Bible Atlas
The Oxford Bible Atlas, edited by Herbert G. May, is a detailed, extremely useful book that will heighten anyone's general understanding of biblical geography. It contains more than maps as it delves into the history behind the maps, and the archaeology behind the history. It cites biblical sources but also cites apocryphal books unfamiliar to most Protestant readers. The end result is a colorful, informative work that helps place both Old and New testaments into perspective.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it!
This is the first time my 7yr old daughter and I have read any of the American Girl books and we love them. The Felicity series has been a great way for me to introduce history and how young girls lived in the early years of America. It has adventure, family life and lessons.I find it sweet and my daughter always wants to see what's going to happen next. With all the TV and gadgets surrounding our children today, I would definetly recommended this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars My spirit is Felicity!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another reader
I haven't read all of the series, my knowledge limits to Felicity, Kirsten, Molly, and especially Samantha, but I would have to give the American Girls series five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to mysteries of the CSS Hunley
I found this book to be very well written and researched on the subject of CSS Hunley and its recovery from the bottom of the sea. The book covers the development of this boat, history of its crew, mission and possible aftermath. Then the book goes on to the history of the search for the Hunley and its discovery and recovery from the ocean floor. Upon its recovery, the book uncovers what lies within the boat. (I used the word "boat" since that is what the submariners called their vessels.)
5-0 out of 5 stars History for The Whole Family
SECRETS OF A CIVIL WAR SUBMARINE: "Solving the Mysteries of the H.L. Hunley" By Sally M. Walker won the Robert F. Sibert Medal and the Notable Award from the Association for Library Service to Children. Although the history of the submarines dates back to the 1620's, in 1864 the Hunley Submarine was the first submarine to ever sink an enemy ship, but the Hunley never returned to port and was lost for decades."How the submarine, which lay buried in the mud of the ocean floor, left her bed there and what happened is a fascinating story of mystery, bones, and gold."The sub is now in NorthCHarleston, SC at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center. In the 1870's PT Barnum offered $10,000 for finding the Hunley, which had silently delivered a torpedo which sank a Union ship blockcading the coast of South Carolina. The Hunley was re-discovered in 1995 by archeologists. This fascinating book for young people is just as interesting and informative for adults in that it details in simple language and good photos the study of the layers of sediment for clues about the ship's sinking and about the demise of the passengers. All the archeology, history, forensics, discovery, and mystery solving are presented in an engaging way involving the intrigues of the sea and science. This is a terrific book for family or schools, good explanations, well written, and easy to read

4-0 out of 5 stars A quick, informative read
Secrets Of A Civil War Submarine, by Sally Walker, provides a nice, quick overview of the Hunley's history, recovery, excavation, and conservation.Targeting the late grade-school reader, the book is written in the style of and at a similar level to a National Geographic article.Any reader will enjoy it and come away with a good understanding of the Hunley project. There are a few detail mistakes, such as in an explanation of neutral buoyancy, but the main point is always delivered successfully by the text.I've been studying material on the Hunley since 2000, but I found several important bits of information I haven't seen elsewhere. The explanation of archaeological techniques as applied in the Hunley excavation is the best I've read. The book is nicely illustrated, although most of the photos have been previously published, and the interpretive drawings contain some fairly large inaccuracies.Overall, I'm happy to have this in my collection of books about the Hunley and I'm glad to recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource; A Great Story
I am a teacher who was looking for a book for my students to use when we study Thanksgiving.Without a doubt, this story is one of the best that we use.It is a great introduction to reading non-fiction, and it provides a wealth of information for students, parents, and teachers.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is hard to put down!
I got "If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620" for our Thanksgiving unit based on several glowing recommendations. I was not disappointed. Both my 5 yo and I had a hard stopping once we got started. I learned things about the Pilgrims I'd never known. And, the content is fascinating for children. It covered such curious topics as Did they bathe on the Mayflower?, What did they eat?, How were people who broke the law punished?, What did children do?It was written to entertain anyone over the age of 4. It's a question/answer book and exceptionally well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I purchased this book for my Grandchildren but this is not only a great book for 4-8 year olds but for anyone over 4. You might learn some things you didn't know. By the way, if you ever go to Plymouth you can go on the Mayflower II, and be sure to visit Plimoth Plantation (it's like going back in time to 1630). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Life in colonial New England from the perspective of a child
Life in New England in colonial times was hard, a good growing year and people could eat well, a bad growing year and there was hunger. Harvest was an especially busy time, as everyone had to work all hours to get all of the food stored away.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books growing up!
I ordered this to reminisce. I remember vividly the pages and drawings that I loved in this book!! Drawings are very precious and expressive. The text of this original 1960s version is a bit dated (mentions Indians as a threat to the lives of settlers - true but not really PC to say it). There is an updated version of the book, which I haven't read. Love this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids with autistic siblings
...well, perhaps my title isn't entirely fair. This is a wonderful book, beautifully written, with a marvelous twist in the end.It deals with the discomforts of being different, of being related to someone who is really different. My son and my nephew BOTH loved this book, but only one of them has an autistic sister.Choldenko deserves huge kudos for writing about an autistic teenager with the compassion and knowledge that she does. But then, she herself grew up with an autistic sibling.

4-0 out of 5 stars I guess you have to respect a can-do person.
Our family listened to the audio book and the story was very interesting with great narration. My 10 year old reluctant reader couldn't wait to hear more.
5-0 out of 5 stars California Young Reader nominee for Middle School
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The family dynamics were easy to relate to and the angst of a middle school kid, new to a school is one all of us can relate to. I teach 8th grade and the reading level wouldn't be challenging for that grade level but the subject matter is engaging. I'd recommend it highly. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Journey to Jamestown
Have you ever wondered about the other side of the story?Have you ever wondered about how a secondary character feels and thinks? If you have, Journey to Jamestown is the book for you! When Elias Ridpath leaves his home in England for Jamestown, Virginia, he is hardly excited. He will be an apprentice to a barber surgeon, and the sight of blood makes him faint. Not only that, but he finds out Jamestown is in the middle of the starving time.Elias finds his strength when a young indian girl from the village through the woods tells him that he "sees through the third eye."Sacahocan is a half-indian, half-english.She doesn't fit in in her mother's community or her father's, but all that changes when she meets Elias, one of the enemy settlers who have stolen indian land. When King James of England wants to crown Sacahocan's leader a prince of England, the indian chief is not amused. When battles separate their people, Elias and Sacahocan find ways to make their voices heard. My favorite event was when one of the two women of Jamestown found a way to make food without having to fish, hunt wild animals, or farm. The only small problem is when one of the men of the village finds that his prized horse is "missing."Another memorable event was when Elias first met Quangartask and befriended the young and friendless boy.
