This was a great book.It provided both facts and interesting tibits about the founders.I used it as a resource in my 5th grade inclusion social studies class and they found it both useful and informative.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource!
"They Signed the Constitution" by Elizabeth Levy has become an excellent resource for me to use in the classroom.I teach 7th grade social studies, and we spend 1 quarter of the year on government. My colleague and Ihave used most of this book for the past 3 years tosupplement the rest of the material we use.We have also created aworksheet to be used with it.Students take turns reading aloud in classfrom this book. They find it easy to read and easy to understand, definitely not the dry textbook we're used to reading!I recommend thisbook for elementary and junior high teachers teaching government, as wellas students looking for an easy way to understand part of our earlyAmerican history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kaya:An American Girl
I started reading the Kaya books to my 6 year old daughter a few months ago, and she loves them.I like how the author takes the reader into the world of Native American culture in a way that is interesting to adults and children. My daughter practices saying the Nez Perce words, which are so conviently located in the glossary in the back of the book. It's helped to open up her world to other cultures right here in our own country.Kaya is a brave girl with anxieties who loves her family;not all that different from our own American girls of today!I highly recommend these books for mothers and daughters to read together when they're young, then have them read them again later on their own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kaya Boxed Set
I have this set. It is enjoyable because you don't have to take the books out from a libray. I took the first book out and I also took out the third( the second was taken out). Its nice to have a boxed set so you know where they all are. The books---I enjoyed them alot. But the only thing is that some of the books(like book 1) I didn't enjoy as much as the others. I give this boxed set a high 4 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Books
Last Christmas, just after she turned 5, my daughter received the present she wanted most--the complete set of Kaya books, her first experience of the American Girls. We began reading them together right away, and she loved them. While the reading level is higher than most of the American Girls books, she had few problems with comprehension as I read the text aloud. She began using many of the Nez Perce words she learned from the story--for some time, her daddy became "Toe-Ta" and I was "Eetsa." Another reviewer complained about the Native American religious beliefs scattered about the text. I found these to be in context for the character (after all, what would one expect given the culture and the time?), and when our faith differs from what is written in the book, it made for some good discussion. Kaya is a character who comes across as real--she makes mistakes, she has doubts, frustrations, and fears. What makes her a great character is that she learns from her mistakes and meets her fears head on with courage. Katie and I look forward to reading more American Girls books together over the years. Our introduction to them has made us eager for more. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I love LH books but...
I love LH books and read them before there was a TV show- I remember how at age 10 I enjoyed reading about Laura and Mary in the Big woods and how facinating it was to read about playing in the attic among all the food and goods the family had in storage. Laura Ingalls Wilder was so decriptive about the foods and acitivities of her childhood that it made you hungry for what they were about to eat and you felt a part of what was going on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a cookbook
The Little House cookbook is more than a collection of recipes. It's full of historical food tidbits. Each recipe if prefaced with an exerpt from the Little House book where that food is mentioned. This feature lets you know you are recreating a dish that Laura described in her book.Since Ma did not write down her recipes, Barbara Walker had to do research to find similar recipes to those described in the Little House series. But because of the explainations regarding the new recipes, there is no suspicion of unauthentic foods. Plus, they taste great. The white bread is a family favorite. This is 100% recommended for Little House fans and those wanting to explore frontier foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 Stars and more really - wonderful cookbook and book
This is wonderful! It is for fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and also for those who are interested in historic cooking - from prairie and colonial days which have their basis in so many of the cultures which settled America in the early days, and adapted for use there

Many people feel sorry for the Japanese Americans that were treated miserably, but they couldn't begin to imagine what they went through. Ben Uchida and his family knew exactly what the experience was like. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Ben feared for his family knowing that the government would automatically point fingers at the Japanese Americans as being spies. The United States government thought it best to take innocent families away from their safe homes and quiet neighborhoods to very dirty and crowded interment camps. The Uchida family and his family were sent to Mirror Lake along with many families. They tiring journey began on a filthy, stained train to the middle of nowhere. Then they were greeted by the military forcing them off the train leaving there bags and things on the train. To make this day better, they realize that they must share an already too small room with another family. Mirror Lake was the name off the internment camp. After months, and months of living a terrible, miserable life, they are released and apologized to. Ben and his family were taken home only to find their house burned to the ground by angry neighbors. The My Name is America series is an excellent series to read if you enjoy to actually get inside the heads of the characters. The Journal of Ben Uchida is a great example of this.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Journal Of Ben Uchida
This book called the Journal of Ben Uchida is based on a true story and talks about Ben Uchida, who is a prisoner of war basically in a detainee camp called Mirror Lake in the middle of nowhere near San Francisco. Throughout the book he is faced by many problems about what he is to do about the situation and how he should handle things. Some basic things he did not notice before, he now cherishes them for all they are worth. As the story progresses Ben makes new friends and enemies as well. One of the friends (or so it turns out) he made was Mike Masuda. He seemed nice at the start was very caring for them and even started a baseball league inside their camp area, but later on in the story there comes a point when he just snaps and is unkind to everyone else. At the end of the book many of the characters end up dieing in a miserable death, but Ben lives on to tell the story.
3-0 out of 5 stars Journal Of Ben Uchida
The book The Journal of Ben Uchida by Barry Denenberg is about a boy named Ben Uchida who lives in San Francisco, California in the year 1942. Ben Uchida was a normal kid 13 year-old until the bombing of Pearl Harbor and everything changed, everyone around him started treating him different because he was Japanese. This is the story of Ben and his family having to go to a concentration camp and finding out about everything that is going to happen during his stay and everything that is wrong about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't teach the Constitution without it!
Maestro reviews the reasons for the Constitution, but fails to mention the Articles of Confederation. The text includes the Virginia, New Jersey, and Connecticut Plans. The book can easily be read as an introduction to the Constitution in one class period.Students could complete a drawing or group of drawings on a picture web to narrate the important details from the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I came across one book by Betsy Maestro "The Discovery of the Americas" and I loved it.The text is simple and the illustrations are great. 5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful children's book with an illustrated personal story and a larger message
Harvesting Hope tells the tale of Cesar Chavez, but more than that, it reveals the power of collective bargaining and fighting for what is just in the world. As a children's book, it has appeal as a well-illustrated biography, an important history lesson, a story of family and personal triumph, and a book with a message.Chavez's crusade took place several decades ago, but the plight of migrant farm workers remains, despite the tremendous inroads Chavez made with La Causa. The story of Chavez's childhood, hard days of labor, and fight for worker's rights is timeless, and Kathleen Krull's award-nominated book deserves a place on every child's bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of a lesser known American Hero
This is a great picture book for all ages. The heroic story of Cesar Chavez is left out of most U.S. history classrooms, save those in California. This book would be an enlightening addition to any classroom or children's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Si Se Puede
Let's begin by saying that the drawings are super and captivating. Yuyi Morales creates characters that show emotion and the result is a drawing of emotion from the young reader. As the title implies this is the story of Cesar Chavez who many adults came to know about from his work with the farmworkers in California. This story humanizes the man by beginning in his childhood. The roots of the farmworker leader are explored asa young person traveling from crop to crop , from state to state. A drought in Arizona began the family oddyssey that would result in Caser Chavez becoming familiar first hand with the troubles of the farmworkers. Life on the road became a harsh reality. The treatment he encountered in school forced him to drop out in eighth grade but the treatment in the fields wasn't much better, at times it was much worse. This is simple story about a complex problem that one man was determined to overcome. He wanted justice for farmworkers and organized. He became to Mexicans what MLK was for civil rights, for Mexicans it was an extension of civil rights. This is a beautiful book for young readers or those not so young that are learning to read in English if they have a reading foundation in another language. Although it is recommended for children ages 6-9, middle school students, ages 9-12, especially those with limited English proficiency can benefit from this story well told. For the teacher or parent this book can help instill pride and understanding as to how determination, perseverance and hard work can overcome even the greatest odds. ... Read more

Caleb's Story picks up where Skylark and Sarah, Plain and Tall leave off. For the countless readers who fell in love with Sarah as she learned to be a mother to Anna and Caleb, and a helpmeet for Jacob, this book is a wonderful addition. For the reader who lacks "Sarah background," Sarah comes from Maine to a prairie farm after responding to an ad placed by Jacob, who is looking for a woman to replace his recently deceased wife. While he is not necessarily looking for romance, Sarah and Jacob ultimately fall in love, and their next years as a family is chronicled in the sequel, Skylark.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a favorite of mine, but a good story to read
I enjoyed this book. There were a few parts that were confusing and I had to go back and reread the chapter. This book did include historical information. The author detailed the Reconstruction period. This story was very suspenseful.I kept expecting something really bad to happen. There was sadness, but no great devastation along the way.I am not too sure that students in 6th-8th grade would enjoy reading this book.I would recommend this book to high school aged students.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story
The event in this story happened in the early of the reconstruction period of South America. It was about Pascal, 12-year-old a young black slave, and his family reaching for their own land. What did Navajo Indians do in World War 2?The title of my book is Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. The main character is Kii Yazhi. He is forced to go to boarding school. From boarding school he heads off to war.
5-0 out of 5 stars code talker review
my son asked me to pick out a relatively short book from the library for his 8th grade book report.Code talker was it.After he raved about it, and spoke of some specifics, i read it myself before returning to the library. It is a beautifully told tale that intertwines the 'simple' english translation of a navajo language filled with spirituality, respect, honor, and a mythological belief in how things came to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Code Talkers
Code Talkers is a fantastic book. The author Joseph Bruchac really knows how to write a good book. When the main charector was growing up he was told he would be nothing. When he got out of boarding school he was on his way to being a big succes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware that movement that generates its own songs.
Doggone it, Katherine Paterson, stop making me cry!Under normal circumstances the number of books that make me tear up is a slim number that could be counted on one hand. And most of those books, if I was going to be honest with you, were probably written by Katherine Paterson.Ms. Paterson is a bit of a wonder.Year after year, decade after decade, she churns out consistently well-written meaningful pieces of children's fiction. The last book of Ms. Paterson's that I read was her rather remarkable, "The Same Stuff As Stars".Now, however, she's decided to traipse back into the world of historical fiction, alongside all the other authors this year, and produce a bit of fascinating history that can show a situation clear distinctions between good and bad, and yet leave enough room for people with nebulous motives. If complex narratives is the name of the game, consider Paterson a player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Poem
This is a wonderful book for any age. The Desiderata, an inspirational poem, was written long ago. This book illustrates the words using simple, yet striking, photographs. I have bought this book for teachers, students, and as gifts for graduates. I always keep a copy in my collection. Words we can all live by.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perspective on life's big picture
One of my favorite poems, a comforting and refreshing perspective on life's big picture. It purports to have been discovered in a church in the seventeenth century, but in fact it was written by a man named Max Ehrmann in the first third of this century. I have kept a copy around since elementary school (ever since I learned that Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, kept one in his office), and now keep one in my office at home and one at work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words for Life
Wonderful and simple words for life written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann. This 2003 version has photographs by Marc Tauss.I received it as a wedding present 2 years ago and it makes a perfect gift for anyone experiencing some kind of change in life as a reminder of some ancient wisdom. It is wonderful for yourself, but is also great for all types of events and stages of life... a graduation, new parents, a wedding, a loss, a need for peace or sanity, anything. ... Editorial Review

Doctor De Soto is a well-respected mouse-dentist who runs a successful practice with his wife (and able assistant) Mrs. De Soto. The De Sotos are friendly and professional toward all their patients, from chipmunks to donkeys to cows, the exception being "cats and other dangerous animals," as stated clearly on the sign outside the office. But the De Sotos are tender-hearted rodents, so when a miserable fox shows up begging for treatment, they agree to have a look (perhaps against their better judgment). As it turns out, this fox, with "a rotten bicuspid and unusually bad breath," manages to behave himself while tiny Doctor De Soto is standing mid-molar inside his gaping jaws. When the wily fox returns the next day to get his replacement gold tooth, however, he has mouse-flavored snacks on his mind. Luckily, Doctor De Soto and his wife have anticipated such despicable canine intentions, and find a way to outfox the ungrateful fox. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Doctor DeSoto book
You can call me StoryMaker. "Doctor DeSoto" is not my favorite book, and I especially don't like the end. I like how they are animal people, but are the size they are supposed to be. What I mean is, they are animals that talk, walk on 2 legs, and live in their own house, but unlike most people animals, they are the size they are in real life. It would probably be a book a young child would adore (probably most children ages 3-5) but I don't fall into the "Dr. DeSoto lovers" category or the "children ages 3-5" category. This book is where a mouse named Dr. DeSoto (a dentist) finds out a fox is seeking dental care. Dr. DeSoto never let an animal that might eat him come in before (that's where them being the size they are in real life is important), but the fox really wants that dental care so Dr. DeSoto's wife lets him in. The part I hate the most is the end when Dr. DeSoto gives the fox his so-called special treatment so he won't eat them. That so-called special treatment causes the fox to not be able to eat anything, even if it isn't a DeSoto family member at all. He could DIE if it dosen't ware off! I actually don't have a lot of complaints, but this book is not very exciting. Overall, perhaps you may like it, but if you like foxes, this book will not please you. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, critical thinking perspective
Consider things from the point of view of the dentist and his patient . . . you'll be laughing out loud while reading this to your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining story
Dr. Desoto is a humorous well illustrated story of a mouse dentist and how he solved a problem in an unexpected way. I have read this book to several children 5-8 yr. age range and they all loved it and wanted to borrow it. Parents will appreciate Dr, Desoto's desire to maintain his professional integrity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book
This book is very fun and imformative. It gives us information, but in a fun way...I recomend this book to anyone under the age of 13, and who enjoys history...if you get this book in school, dont be scared it is fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars The English establish thirteen colonies in the New World
"Making Thirteen Colonies: 1600-1740" is the second volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US."The first volume covered how the first Americans crossed over from Asia to become Indians and the first Europeans, mainly the Spanish but also the French and English, began settling the New World. This volume focuses on the narrow string of settlements established by the English that became the thirteen colonies whose people began moving westward and who also started to question the relationship they had with England (there is a small amount of overlap between this and the next volume, which covers period of American history from 1735-1791).5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I love this series!! Told in story style, you get details and interesting tidbits that you wouldn't get inordinary text books. I have always felt that history was a vital part of our school curriculum and these books make the going easier.Even if you are just a history buff, instead of student, you would enjoy these! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cute pictures, very appropriate.
I wanted a book that not only I could read to my son, but one that I would feel comfortable letting a baby sitter read to him. This gets the point across and doesn't go into a lot of detail about what body parts are named. I can read this as a regular story without my son even knowing I am "teacing" him. I like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!
I had purchased the Potty Book for Girls for my now almost 6yo daughter. It was great. She loved it.Now its my boys turn.I have begun reading the book for them and they love it.It is just like the Girl one but blue with a boy. They like "reading" it themselves. The pages are coated and much more durable.Great tool to begin potty training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catchy, and Fun.
We read this to our twin boys every time we sit them on the potty. It helps them relax, and get excited to go. I don't think this is useful as a guide to potty train your child, but it is a cute little book that will encourage them, and keep their interest. Both of my sons have learned to recite the book themselves they love it! ... Read more
