5-0 out of 5 stars A Story with a Gentle Strength
I finished this novel last night and was entranced by the author's ability to put me right there along with Sadie and her family.Throughout my reading, I constantly thought of the stories my own mother told me of growing up in a large family during the Great Depression in Texas.Children worked alongside parents in cotton fields, mending clothing, and at shrimp canneries.I am anxious to see how receptive my 7th graders are to the story. As a teacher, I always look for books that can flow into studies in other classrooms.I believe The Truth About Sparrows is perfect for that purpose in blending language arts with social studies, and, in particular, Texas History which is taught at the seventh grade level.I've also recommended it to my 24 year old daughter for the connection to her grandmother, my mom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: THE TRUTH ABOUT SPARROWS
"I pushed myself up and startled a sparrow. It flew down the road and took up a new roost near a large cardboard box nestled in the cedars. Something stirred, and it flew again. I looked closer and recognized the man Mama had fed last night asleep inside the box. He shifted and pulled his knees up closer to his chest.
5-0 out of 5 stars A touching and satisfying story, even for adult readers
From the opening pages of this book, twelve-year-old Sadie draws us into the world of a family fighting to survive during the Depression. When Sadie's father decides to move the family from Missouri to Texas to find work, Sadie is angry over leaving her home and best friend behind. She's determined to find a way back to her home, and promises her best friend that she won't forget her or make anyone else her best friend. Life on the road is challenging for Sadie's family. Her father's physical disabilities are woven seamlessly and compassionately into the story. We learn much about Sadie by seeing her brothers, sisters, parents, and strangers they meet on the road through her eyes.Sadie is a likeable character and her ambivalent feelings of love and resentment toward her family draw the reader into her world. Sadie takes steps toward independence by finding work in the local shrimp cannery and showing an interest in a lonely man, but her life takes many surprising turns and she is forced to change and grow as she deals with new friends and tests of her loyalties, poverty, a hurricane, and the unexpected arrival of a new baby.

3-0 out of 5 stars the alamo
one of the reviews complained that the book was mislabeled, because it didn't take place in the alamo. while that is true, the alamo is a central point throughout the plot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alamo Diary Opened My Mind
What a fun read! I was not too enthusiastic about this book but I gave it a try anyway. I'm glad I did! Wall-to-wall action and relevant description abound in this story about a misunderstood historical period. I read this a few years ago and I still remember how good it was. Recently I read another book about the Alamo, and it makes me appriciate how well-written this one is. I don't agree that the action is sparse; if it was, I wouldn't have finished it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings back an almost forgotten era
When my niece (from L.A.) first came to New York, she was seven years old. I took her to the rehabilitated Ellis Island, and she was (for a seven year old) fascinated to learn that her great grandparents along with millions of other immigrants had stepped across that pier and became Americans. For Christmas, I sent her this brilliant book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Connecting Childen to History
this book is an excellent companion to the historical ficiton book "Bud, Not Buddy."By reading aloud sections ofChildren of the Dustbowl, teachers could build some of the background knowledge that would help children understand how the daily lives of the average person changed as a result of the Great Depression and the 5-year drought in the Midwest.
5-0 out of 5 stars Children of the Dust Bowl
The book appeared to be new, no marks, and sent immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable for ages five (with help from parent) and up.
The writing in this book is excellent, flowing evenly from page to page. Many of the photographs within are pure art, having been taken by Russell Lee, Dorothea Lange, and others. These two people are the Pieter Bruegel and Thomas Hart Benton (depicting plain, everyday folk) of American photography. This book relates a small chunk of American history, to be sure, but more than that, it relates universal themes of the human condition. Overall, the book relates the brutal conditions of the dust bowl, the migration over the mountains and desert, taunting and prejudice from settled Californians, and eventual attainment of excellence, as revealed by the construction and maintenance of the Weedpatch School, which eventually became a model school in the community. My 5 1/2 year old enjoyed reading every page, and found particular mirth in the unusual daily chore that the dust bowl children did with their cows. The description of this unusual chore is worth the price of the book. What was this daily chore? One way to find out is to borrow or purchase this book. ... This is a wonderful book. It is the story of a maple tree inNew York state; how it began from a seed, grew up in the forestprimeval, survived the pioneer's axe to live in a family's yard, has provided shade and syrup to generations passing on its way to becoming the venerable giant it is now.Part science, part American history, all beautiful. My son has enjoyed this book since he was about 3 (he's reading it himself now at 7) and I'm buying extra copies as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Big Tree Confusion
I came to Amazon, as I typically do, looking for something special.1,000 wods, hunh?Okay. One of my fondest childhood memories is of a book entitled The Big Tree.It was read to my 2nd grade class by a wonderfulold grandmotherly teacher...Mrs. Woods. This was at Wineteer ElementarySchool at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita Kansas in 1962.That bookliterally changed my life, in the sense that it alone initiated a loveaffair with reading that has lasted my entire life. The book was about thelife and times of a giant redwood tree in California...as I recall thestory spanned several hundred years.Clearly, it made a terrificimpression on me.I came here looking for this book.Instead I have foundBruce's book, which appears to be a similar story told from an oak tree'spoint of view.I can say this about that, considering the fact that I havenot read Bruce's book.If it is half a good as the book I recall, I wouldrecommend this story whole heartedly. If a book like this can reach yourgrade school child the way the redwood story affected me, it will be aninvestment in the future the likes of which you can only begin to imagine. Bruce, thank you for keeping the dream alive. ... Read more

WOW the book The Babe& Me by Dan Gutman was one of the greatest books I've ever read!!! The novel is historic because when Joe Stochak went back in time with his father to witness if Babe Ruth called his elusive home run shot in the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. At First the book didn't really catch my attention until the last couple of chapters. This book caught my attention by the genre because I'm really interested in historic fiction. I loved the way Dan Gutman was so descriptive about baseball fans at a game such as chanting, name-calling and rude slang. After reading this book I am really looking forward to reading some more Dan Gutman sports series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book deserves BETTER than what most review claims
I read this book when I was still learning how to speak English and I honestly could not put it down. This is one of the books my teacher made us read and was actually my third choice but read it anyway. The book takes you back to Civil War era in a Southern IL farm through the eyes of a nine year old boy, Jethro. He has brothers fighting for the Union Army but one chose to fight for the Confederate so his family was harassed by neighbors and people from other towns. The book is very accurate on historical facts and invites the reader to think and contemplate the views and beliefs of the North and South through the eyes of an innocent child. A reader who do not care to stop and reflect on the feelings and emotions of different characters will obviously find the book boring. But this is the opposite when you know how to appreciate a writer's creativity of bringing the story into your mind. The book also used spellings to closely portray how people in the setting speaks which actually caught my interest as I was still learning American English. Very interesting and entertaining at the same time. A must read for every American child who needs to learn his/her country's history and appreciate that he/she can actually read contrary to slaves in Civil War era who were denied that skill.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring as hell
Reading this book (until chapter six, where the book picks up somewhat), I thought to myself, "Why does my teacher hate me so? Does he find interest in learning about someone getting a bad headache from lack of coffee (which takes up an entire chapter)?" This book offers a different look at the Civil War. A boring one. Written 100 years after the Civil War ended (1968), this book set the precedent of "don't write about the Civil War if you aren't going to talk about battles, because it's boring." Read something interesting with your ever-disappearing life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Jack Hamilton
Jethro Creighton is living in the time of the Civil war.It is just about to start and he is excited.Jethro and his family live in southern Illinois. So they live in a union state and have a union family. All of Jethro's brothers go into the war, and also his cousin. His brother John and Tom, and also his cousin Eb, go to fight for the union. However, his brother Bill makes a decision to fight with the confederacy.Jethro respects his decision and still loves him. While a lot of his family is out at war, Jethro is still at home and expected to work even harder out on the farm. All day he works in the heat, but he doesn't mind it so much. But things start going wrong. His brother Tom is killed in battle, it is very sad. While that happened, some of the men in the down are very angry that Bill went to the confederacy. They call him a traitor and said he deserted the union. Then they start taking action for it and start tormenting the Creighton's.After countless things they end up burning the Creighton's house down. Then Jethro finds Eb, he had deserted the union army.Jethro wrote a letter to President Lincoln to see what he needs to do.Jethro doesn't tell the family cause he doesn't want anyone to get in trouble.Later the war ends and Jethro gets his education. This book was ok, not the greatest I have ever read. There were things about it that I liked and there were things that I didn't like so much.I liked how it showed what war is really like. It showed that enemies aren't always your enemies. What I didn't like is that it was sort of boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Profound Look into One Boy's Search For Identity
"When the Legends Die" is a well-written novel by Hal Borland which covers how one young Indian attempts to find balance between the "white man's world" and the world of his native ancestors. As he struggles to keep old traditions in the modern world, his life becomes montony, an endless circle that leads nowhere but is always changing the young man's character. He must decide whether the "new way" or the "old way" is the way for him.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This was a wonderful tale of a young boy's struggle for survival in a new world and his search for his past one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm....how to describe
This book, I have a hard time even describing.I picked it up for the first time in high school, for a book report.I was completely mesmerized by the story.Maybe not even the story, but the feeling the book gives off.Intense sadness, isolation by choice, integration by force....then there's the way it's brought into the beautiful, painful scenery. It's been a couple of years since I've read this, so I'm not going to quote exact details. However, it's a rare book that I can look back on, and set myself into, because I remembered the way scenes felt. That's not just good writing. That's fantastic writing, in my opinion. If you want a book that will stick with you, long after you've finished it, try this one.I don't think you'll be dissapointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not so boring.
Quite contrary to other peoples opinions on this book I found it engaging rather than boring. The main character (Amos) is an example good of patience. It is well written and an excellent book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amos Fortune Free Man
This book was a bit slow starting but then picked up towards the middle and end (so much that I wish it hadn't of stopped.)Even though the print and layout of book seemed kind of juvenile it's content and vocabulary was fitting for up to a 14 or 15 year old.
3-0 out of 5 stars Rewrite!
This terrific story deserves a rewrite. This books is so good, and yet so bad.The middle is so dull I can't find a word dull enough to describe it.The amazing thing is that despite the horror of the dull bits you still feel compelled to finish the story. You still feel awed by the triumph of Amos Fortune.I've even reread it because the story and the characters are so strong.I recommend reading this book despite it's faults.Hang in there. It really is worth it, though you won't believe me until the end. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Historically Inaccurate
Having recently read this book for a class I was appalled and astonished at its historical inaccuracies.Although billed as 'historical fiction' it is just fiction.Other than the name of the school and the names lifted off of headstones, there is no history here.It should not be treated as anything but fiction.See the following website for more details.[...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Nannie Little Roses Story
The setting of this story took place at a school named Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania in the late 1800's.
2-0 out of 5 stars Made Up
I'm a four-teen year old who really disliked this book because alot of things are just made up. On page 32, Nannie's mother asks, "What will you learn? To be more silly than you are?" Lakota Children where treated with alot more respect then that. Then another thing when Belle Rain Water gave Nannie a prayer stick, A hopi child wouldn't give a Lakota child a prayer stick! Sacred objects like these were/are not things children have or share. Just one of Ann Rinaldi made up things. And alot more botherd me while I read the rest of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures, pictures, pictures!
I have a six year old son who loves this book, especially the pictures. There are a few pages that have extravagant landscape scenes with tons of stuff going on and we play a "where's waldo" type of game to find all the different types of fruits and veggies and also find the different snack posse team members. He absolutely loves it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lighten Up and Eat Healthy
I am glad that my best friend happened to mention how much her daughter loved "The Race Against Junk Food." We were talking about books for our kids.Having read KR's review (above) previously, I had second thoughts about buying this book for my son.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I can't believe that other reviewers gave this book 5 stars. I was completely disappointed. The book included very little useful informationto help kids make good nutritional choices- "fruits and veggies are awesome" was about the extent of it. The text is uninteresting and cumbersome to read aloud, and the illustrations are not appealing. I am returning this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The American war for independence and its aftermath shaped the brand-newnation and provided many of the patriotic heroes and legends that are stillcelebrated today. In this handsome and informative addition to DK's Eyewitnessseries, many of the finer details of life during the Revolutionary War areexplored, including, of course, the political backdrop, powerful leaders such asthe young George Washington, and dramatic battles. This is no dry textbook, however. Readers will also discover exactly what kind of clothing soldiers wore, and see actual photos of weapons, snuff boxes, restored original fightingvessels, and the silver inkstand used by Congressional delegates as they signedthe Declaration of Independence. Spy methods are described, Loyalists andpatriots are defined, and the symbols and songs of war and freedom areexplained. Even a subject as old and oft-told as the American Revolution is madefresh by D.K.'s compelling photos and enlightening text. Appetite whetted formore war stories? Take a look at these titles in the Eyewitness referencecollection: Read more

The books are very well done, pictures and timelines inclusive but are targetting younger readers. As an adult I must admit MOST of the content were things I did not know but thats more of a review of our schools than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the Drinking Gourd
A wonderful story about a family escaping slavery using astronomy and song. Beautifully illustrated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Song of freedom
This fine story teaches even the smallest of children about the evil of slavery in pre-Civil War America. It shows a desire for freedom so strong that men, women and children risked their lives to escape on the Underground Railroad, following the largest star in the Drinking Gourd of the title (The Big Dipper). 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story for All ages !
