I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Three Trees: A Traditional Folktale
I am a Catholic School teacher and have read this to my class at different times of the year.I find it a fantastic tale and the children are always amazed by the end of the story.I have purchased it for our Pastor when he was transfered to another parish and he said it brought tears to his eyes. It's a great tale of how you don't have to be embedded with jewles, pointing to the sky or a grand ship taking fanastic voyages to be a good person. God loves us just the way we are weather it be in a mink coat or rags.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I highly recommend this book. It's great for all ages to understand that life doesn't always work out as planned, God's plan is better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Children's Books Ever Made
On one level, it's a Cinderella story in a different setting. But it's more than that.On a little deeper level, it's a story about true beauty being inside, but it's more than that. The book seems to have so many layers of meaning depending on how you look at it, all in what seems at first like a simple picture book.Confidence, ties to the Earth, insight into others, and more.I've read this book to my sons and daughters more than any other, and never tire of it.I hope they don't either, and more, I hope they come to understand the richness of the kind of lives lived by the rough face girl, and her sister-in-law to be, and husband to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rough-Faced Girl
This is a story about a girl who is not beautiful on her outside, but is beautiful on her inside. The story takes place on the shores of Lake Ontario. She and her hard-hearted sisters are three of many women who want to marry an invisible being. But only someone who can see him, can marry him. The lesson is on the importance of having a good heart more than beautiful clothes or looks. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Native American culture and people who need to learn the importance of having a good heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magnificiant Story of an Indian Girl!
The Rough Face Girl is a beutiful book.It had alot of description and many morals hidden in the words of the book. The young girl was despised by everyone in her village but she always stayed true to herself and others and she ended up with the best person that every girl wanted to marry.I learned that true beauty comes from inside and if you are honest then good things will happen to you.I also learned to be yourself because sooner or later people will start to accept who you are.And I learned to remember that there is always room for improvment. So in conclusion, I feel that this story can be enjoyed by young and old people! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Indian legend about how different people have different talents
As is the case in all cultures, there are people more and less suited for various tasks. In the world of the American Indians of the plains all life revolved around hunting the buffalo. However, not all boys are meant to be fierce warriors, some are simply not suited to the task. This book is about Little Gopher, a boy who had a Dream-Vision of his grandfather where he was told that he was to paint the pictures of the warriors rather than be one. His canvas was to be stretched white buckskin, his brushes made from the hairs of different animals and his colors were made from rocks and berries. He painted scenes of his people in action, but for some time he longed to make an accurate rendition of a sunset as he never seemed able to create the right colors.
4-0 out of 5 stars Painting the Sunset
This legend is based on how the Great Plain Indians were given the colors of the sunset by one of the talented Indians. This book shows how Little Gopher, the Indian that painted the colors of the sunset for his People, remained true to his destiny.Even though he felt like he didn't have a special gift, Little Gopher continued to stay dedicated, until he was guided in the right direction by an old grandfather and young maiden in his Dream-Vision.The overall theme of this legend is that perseverance pays off in the end. 5-0 out of 5 stars Indian Paintbrush
This story is about Little Gopher who was sad because `he couldn't keep up with the other boys who were always riding, running, shooting their bows, and wrestling to prove their strength.' Luckily for him he had his own special talent, a talent for painting and creating.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars from a Texan
As a Texan, I had to have this book for my 4 month girl. Obviously, she is too young to understand the text, but as soon as she is old enough I will not hesitate to continue reading this book to her. It is so beautifully written and the illustrations are wonderful, as Tomie dePaola's illustrations always are. The lessons of selflessness and sacrifice are invaluable. And it gives a perfect opportunity to discuss such realities of life as being orphaned and loneliness in a non-threatening way if the proper discussion between parent and child accompanies the book.

This was my favorite story when I was a child. I love how it tells of a young girl who chooses to give up something she loves for her family and people... I read this book whenever I could in school. Now that I teach pre school I get to share the beauty of this story with my class and they love it too...In Texas you see them everywhere in late March to early May. I use to think it was funny but now I have to wonder why, when you see a bluebonnet an Indian paintbrush isn't that far away? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Triumph of Southern Storytelling
Walt Disney's adaptation of Joel Chandler Harris's classic collection of stories is a wonderful selection for any child, but is a virtual must-own for children of the Deep South. The stories narrated by the fictional slave "Uncle Remus" detail the lives and relationships of a broadassortment of woodland creatures. The book includes the classic "BrerRabbit and the Tar-Baby," as well as lesser-known tales such as"The Wuller-de-Wust."The beautifully illustrated depictions ofthe misadventures of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear will enthrallyoungsters of all ages as they read or listen to the stories. This is abook that I hope to pass down through generations of my family, just as mygrandfather passed it on to me.You owe it to your children to obtain acopy, especially now that the book has gone out of print. ... This was a fair tale children seemed to follow the story better but did not want to hear this book again and again,I was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about a funny coyote!
I like it because when the Coyote meets some birds he wants to fly with, all the birds give him one of their right feathers, but he didn't balance. So they each gave him left feathers, but he still didn't balance. And the reason he didn't balance was because he needed one left feather and oneright feather. - AMD, Age 7. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - Often overlooked
There aren't enough children's stories that are based on Americanheroes, so this one definitely desreves much recognition. Appleseed's character is based on a true character, yet there is a a fair amount ofmyth in the story to keep things interesting and the children engaged; this book is a definitely a treat

4-0 out of 5 stars Native American thinking for children and adults
This book is an excellent resource for teaching children and adults about Native American culture. Specifically, this book focuses on the philosophy of how Turtle Island children are guided through learning as a circle of experiences. People of a western mind frame can appreciate this book as a collection of traditional stories compiled from several Native American nations woven into a story about one boy's quest to find wisdom and eventually earn the privilege of marrying the object of his desire. Without an understanding of the Medicine Wheel, many crucial events of this book will confuse the western mind. This book is meant to be read more than once in order to grasp the depth of all that it can teach children about gaining wisdom while evolving from children to young adults. This book is best used with middle school students whose age is equivalent to that of Anpao at the beginning of the book. If used in a classroom, it's recommended that the teacher read "Seven Arrows" by Hyemeyohsts Storm or the "Native People Native Ways" series by White Deer of Autumn in order to gain an appreciation for the complexities of Anpao as a cultural resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book
This is my favorite book. Not only was it written with the exact precision I strive to imitate, but it was captivating in all ways. I could relate to the hero so much that I could have been the hero, and everything seemed to make sense, like it was written to me. I love Native American culture, but you don't have to in order to appreciate this book; it isn't about that. I would call it the greatest adventure novel of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful art, distant voice
I have to argee with a previous reviewer who commented on the weakness of the narrative voice in _The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses_: it is just too distant and does not draw children in as many other stories do.Graphically it has a Native American "feel" to it, which helps the weak writing, which is why I gave it 4 stars.A better collection of Native stories is Joseph Bruhac's _Dog People: Native Dog Stories_.

3-0 out of 5 stars The girl who loved wild horses
The book I read is called The girl who loved wild horses. The girl who loved wild horses is for younger children under 8. It is about a girl that lived with wild horses. In a terrible storm the horses get scared and run away into the wild horse country.Since she does not know the way home how will she survive?I would give this book 3 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a hit at my house
Halfway into the story, my kids asked if we could read something else. I suspect this may be a book that appeals more to adults than to children. The art work is beautiful and the plot worthwhile, but the narrative voice is so distant and emotionless--I expect that is probably what turned my kids off. The girl, the tribe, and the animals don't have names. The piece reads like a prologue rather than a story. ... Read more

Children in my classroom didnt enjoy this story but it was worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arrow To The Sun By Gerald McDermont

3-0 out of 5 stars Level 5: Escape the serpents and the room of lightning
I don't think I can judge Gerald McDermott's 1975 Caldecott winning picture book, "Arrow to the Sun" fairly. You see, I am a child of the 80s.I remember the early days of Colico Vision and Atari.I have very clear images in my head of some of the first arcade games, like Q-Bert, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario Brothers. Why do I invoke such images when I'm (supposedly)reviewing "Arrow to the Sun"?Because like these games, "Arrow to the Sun" suffers for its time period.Author/illustrator Gerald McDermott strived very hard to make this story both deeply original and timeless. In many ways, he has succeeded. But if you, like myself, played a single pixilated arcade game in the late 70s or early to mid 80s then you'll take one look at this book and notice its video game aspects. It's a beautiful story. It's just tainted in the eyes of the children of the 80s.

5-0 out of 5 stars A staple for children's gifts
I don't know how many copies of this book I've purchased over the years to give away as gifts for all the children I've encountered through family and friends. It's a wonderful story that breathes tolerance, humility, and respect and appreciation for one's differences. This is one of my favorite books! It's visually stimulating and speaks so much to the tradition of oral storytelling in Mexican culture.I also love the fact that the Lucia is gorgeous, and brown with deep black hair. It's empowering for little girls of color to see a strong protagonist of color---my students love her and connect with her character.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
This is a powerful and beautiful retelling of this story. This book is written in Spanish and in English and anyone interested in Latino storytelling will buy this book for their collection.I also highly recommend DRUM, CHAVI, DRUM! by Cuban author, Mayra L. Dole, and TRINOS CHOICE, by Chicana author Diane Bertrand.

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful story with strong female protagonist
Unlike the usual simpering heroine, Lucia is strong, mysterious, natural, and good.Children who are different from others--foreign, language difficulty, intelligence higher or lower--will appreciate how this stranger bounced back from hurt. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Illustrations kept it going
A legend about a boy who falls out of his family wagon as they are crossing the country. He is forced to raise himself in the wide open west and learn how to protect his life.4-0 out of 5 stars Bland, but the Pictures are Grand
This mild, but event-filled re-telling of the Pecos Bill story lacks the incorrigible air of tongue-in-cheek humour and bold-faced lies of the typical tall tale. However, and especially if your young`uns never heard a tall tale, the wonderful illustrations will partially make up for this. When we started to read this book,we thought those sweet-faced, round-eyed, snub-nosed cowboys looked a little familiar:this guy is the same feller who illustrated HOW MUCH IS A MILLION? which we like alot.My boys love the snake lasso, and we return many times to the fantastic "critter" that Bill wrassles into submission. But breaking-in "Widder-maker" is an let-down after that adventure, I am afraid.I recommend Adrien Stoutenburg`s AMERICAN TALL TALES for older children (9-12yrs) which has few illustrations but whose style is far better suited to the dramatic and poetic nature of the tall tale genre. My seven-year old loves to hear me read those aloud. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars How the Stars Fell into the Sky: A Navajo Legend
My son is in 2nd grade and they're doing a unit on Native Americans. We read this book together and enjoyed the story as well as the beautiful illustrations. This book also lends itself to do the shadowbox project that goes along with the class studies. I enjoyed the Navajo concept of how the stars are patterned in the sky. We would recommend this book for the 7-9 year old group. ... Read more

I absolutely loved this children's book. Even I was taken at first by the rabbit's cleverness. It is a cute story and was very entertaining. The rabbit sure did know how to trick that old bear into giving up all the crops! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book!
I love this book both for it's great story and because it isa terrific resource for teachers. It's one of those books (like Where the Wild Things Are or Runaway Bunny) that just grabs kids up and speaks directly to things they are deeply connected to.In this case: inequity, anger and how to deal with those feelings. 4-0 out of 5 stars First Strawberries - a definite pick!
This Cheyenne tale is a great lesson about how words of anger hurt and about forgiveness. Also a nature pour-quoi tale! Can be shared easily with very young, important message for older boys and girls as well as adults. After reading this, eating strawberries will be just a little sweeter! ... Read more
