This book has it all!
Rarely does a book combine learning and fun so well.This book is very educational (it has helped make my kids wild about geography) yet has a humor that is simple enough for my two year old to laugh and sophisticated enough to make me laugh as well.

A calm and lovely view of Appalachia
Author Cynthia Rylant and illustrator Barry Moser were both reared in Appalachia, and they are completely in sync on this book.The calm, clear-eyed text and the evocative watercolor paintings balance and enhance each other beautifully. Appalachia: The Voices of Sleeping Birds
Cynthia Rylant has once again captured the true spirit of the Appalachian culture. Her descriptions are right on target. Many of us, who live in this wild and wonderful country, know folks just like those she introduces to us in all of her stories. I bought this book for my fifth grader for a report he did on Ali.He enjoyed the book and pictures very much; to the point that he became quite interested in Ali's life (beyond just boxing).The boook was easy to read, not too long, and had some great, famous photographs.

M is for Mitten
Like all of the Sleeping Bear Press books this one is also fabulous!I used this book for a literature lesson with a Michigan unit.The kids love the poems and I like the facts that go along with them.This is a delightful story that any child (especially a Michigan child) will enjoy.

Not Just for Children!
"M is for Michigan" makes a wonderful coffee table book, in my opinion.I don't have young children in the home anymore, but someday hope to have grandchildren and will greatly enjoy reading this lovely book to them.While we were in Whitehall, Michigan my mother bought a copy for herself as she loves well-written children's books.Later I went back to the same store and bought one of my own.I do refer to it from time to time and although I don't have a coffee table I keep it on display on my living room bookshelf!

The Interest of Living with the Hopi
This is a great book. It has a lot of facts in it. The illustrations and the text made it seem like you were there, and you really feel how you would live and work. They had to do a lot of work, even the children. Children collected firewood, beans, plants, and other things to help with the gardens and food. In Hopi culture, the boys and the girls were equal. They had different jobs, but neither were more important than the other. The Hopi also looked for baby eagles hundreds of feet off the ground to see if they're prayers would be answered. I would recommend this book to kids and grown ups who are interested in Hopi and in our country.

Great for Kids AND Adults
This was a very interesting book, and I enjoyed it as much as my five-year-old son (and I learned as much as he did, too). In fact, my 11-year-old daughter was compelled to join in the reading, too. A great way to memorize!
If a silly picture of a gust of wind blowing down Main Street doesn't do anything for you, you've never read "Yo, Sacramento!" It should remind you that Augusta is the capital of Maine.The whole book is a marvelous mix of funny mnemonic cartoons with interesting facts about the states and capitals.My eight year old daughter loves this book and its companion, "Yo, Millard Filmore!"; she memorized the Presidents in a few minutes and the states/capitals in a couple days. And although I hate to admit that I couldn't remember them from my school days, the books helped me learn them too. (I don't know about the "never forget" part, but it does stick with you, and it's easy to pick back up.) When we showed these books to my family, my niece (the daughter of a social studies teacher) even told me she thought it was too easy; it must be cheating somehow to learn them this way! Wonderful book--should be read by every child
Wonderfully written stories of Johnny Appleseed, Lewis & Clark, John Henry, etc.My children and fascinated by them, and frankly, so I am.I look forward to reading A Children's Book of Heroes by Bennett.

I was just about to a couple of his books as Christmas presents.I did not realize he was the person who commented that aborting every black baby would reduce the crime rate.There is no way I would buy anything written by this person.

Things even a Minnesotan didn't know!
Many Minnesotans have visited the original Wilder sites, but this book contains infomation that was new to even a jaded "Wilder" fan!

Invaluable Resource for Little House Fans
William Anderson has done a fabulous job in painstakingly documenting everything there is to see from New York to South Dakota that has anything to do with Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" series. Ever wondered what happened to Pa's fiddle? Or if the house dug out from the banks of Plum Creek is still intact? This book has the answers. Complete with color photographs, addresses, phone numbers and maps, as well as ample background information, The Little House Guidebook is a must have for Little House fans everywhere. Even if you never get to visit these places, this book will take you there.

Good source for touring sites, rehash of some old material.

This is an excellent book for the aspiring cowboy in your house.I have twin cowboys who are almost 4 and they love this book.Their daily attire are cowboy boots and hats, spurs and a side iron(plastic today).So this book helps with their imagination and curiosity. For Brooklynites of All Ages!
An excellent, albeit silliy, addition to the library or coffee table of Brooklynites of any age. Granted, it isn't "all-inclusive," but what pop-up book (or any book on Brooklyn, for that matter) is?

Brings Brooklyn to life...
It is really nice to see a resurgence of such childhood favorites as the "pop-up" book.Truly the first multimedia toys, these books add a new dimension (pun most certainly intended) to the written word. Overall, fun and colorful.
Each foldout page in this book was designed by a different person. Sometimes they're disappointing as pop-ups, but there are some bright moments. The cover by Maurice Sendak allows you to see behind it into how the movements are made. The brownstones page is silly, with stupid bug cartoons everywhere. The library is really disappointing, with no real focus and no real view of what the building looks like. The art museum is just lovely, and is probably the best -- but then, it's by Sabuda (my favorite pop-up artist)! The botanic garden could have been the most colorful and beautiful page -- instead, it's childish and dull. The carousel is fun, with horses popping out at you. The Brooklyn Bridge is nice, but the flavors of Brooklyn are worthless. Coney Island is fun, with a rotating Ferris wheel. The book comes in a handy-dandy re-sealable plastic cover. So if you're fond of Brooklyn this will be a really nice memento. But I do NOT recommend it for reading out loud to children. ... Read more
