Editorial Review

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book...and I think you will too!
This book is about a little boy who finds a train in front of his house. He has a chance to go on a great journey...does he get on the train? I think you will like this book. This book makes me feel happy. Your kids might like it too!

4-0 out of 5 stars S, Bartkus Review
This beautifully written 1986 Caldecott Award winning book captivates readers young and old to love this Christmas classic. The story is told from a young boy's point of view of waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve, only to find a train waiting outside his bedroom window ready to go to the North Pole.Van Allsburg immediately draws the reader into the story by capturing the young boy leaning outside his window leading the reader to turn the page and see what the boy sees. The storyline follows the journey of a boy on the Polar Express train to see Santa in the North Pole and receive the first gift of Christmas. It teaches a strong lesson for those who believe and is appropriate for children while bringing back the warm eager memories of waiting for Santa.Van Allsburg's award winning illustrations are so realistic and fill the pages to capture the emotions and spirit of the children. His use of shading to create shadows on each page capture the essence of the Christmas Eve night. The lights in the background seem to pop out in the background as if one turned on a light switch. The detailed realistic drawings capture the emotion of the young boy especially when he lost the bell that Santa had given him.We see him on the train and empathize with him along with the other children as if we were riding right there in the train with him.Although the illustrations gained the main recognition of the story, his use of rich descriptive language also strengthen the story.Van Allsburg's use of similes to compare, give vivid details and appeal to the senses of the reader. For example, one line describes the chocolate cocoa as " melted chocolate bars."The popularity of this book was made into a blockbuster movie and Van Allsburg's talent of lasting artisitic impression and rich language was not lost. This book will continue to touch readers of all ages and capture the warm spirit of Christmas. ... When Judy and Peter find a board game in the park, they take it home, hoping to alleviate their boredom. One live lion, an erupting volcano, and a dozen destructive monkeys later, the children are no longer bored. Their jungle adventure game has come to life! 4-0 out of 5 stars Jumanji Children's book
This book was in perfect condition when it arrived in New Zealand. I was particularly impressed with the service I received from Amazon and the quickness of my delivery. Thumbs Up!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Childhood Memory
Jumanji is a great book! I am 23 years old now and I still remember the day my 2nd grade teacher read Jumanji to my class. I was hanging on her every word and the illustrations were absolutley amazing. This was in the year 1987 and up to that point I had never seen pictures so vividly and immaculately rendered. Jumanji was unlike any other book that I had read because it was fun, exciting, adventurous, and also eerie which added to the intrigue. I was very disappointed by the movie interpretation of it, because it's nothing like the real thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jumanji
Jumanji is an exhilarating book.Itis a fiction book and fiction books are better than nonficiton because when somebody tells you the truth it`s not fun. Another reason I liked Jumanji is because Chris Van Allsburg writes pretty good books and his pictures are breathtaking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SOME OF THE AUTHOR'S BEST WORK
I did indeed love this one.The art work, per usual, for this author, was absolutely perfect. It is the type of work that can appeal to children as well as adults (I'm well into my sixties, and I enjoyed it...of course I have a lot of little boy in me still). As to the narrative, I did feel this was one of the author's better works.Allsburg is certainly a teller of good stories.I have observed this work being read to the children at our local library and it is one of their favorites.Again, the art work is almost magical, quite detailed and rather amazing to view.Recommend this one highly.

I teach second grade and my class just loved this book. Chris Van Allsburg is one of our favorite authors but this is one of his best!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages
I am 23 and plan to teach at the secondary level, but when we read this book in one of my education classes I knew I had to share it.I bought it, went to a first grade classroom and they were hooked. Many wanted to hear it again, others wanted to get a copy for themselves, still others just wanted to look at the magnificent pictures again. It is a fabulous book and a wonderful story! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A FASCINATING WORK!
Other reviewers have used the word "strang" to discribe this work.I think the words "haunting" and "mysterious," probably hit closer to the mark.At least they do for me.This is one of those works that will certainly make you think.More importantly, it will make, or should make, the young reader think. That is the key to the fascination of the text of this work.Beyond doubt, the illustrations are quite wonderful, even beautiful.I did not the some of the youth reviews here were not overly enthusiastic.I have found that many young people do indeed "get" the story, while others do not. Some simply do not have the capacity to wonder, to imagine. This is sort of sad in a way, but on the other hand, it is works such as this, that if read with an adult who does have that spark of wonder in them, might allow some of that wonder to rub off.I like a good fantasy and a good mystery, ergo, I liked this book and do recommend it.The art work and stark writing alone are worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars can you figure out who the stranger is?
some criticize the tale because it leaves much open to speculation/imagination; that is part of the appeal of this Van Allsburg work; I had to read it 2 or 3 times before I figured out the ID of the stranger; then I wanted to read it again to see all the clues I had missed; it is so clever; I agree that it is not a book for small children, but not because of adult themes or unrealistic elements (driver hitting pedestrian, no injury to pedestrian, driver not punished for crime, stranger going home to family, risk of child abuse when stranger alone w/daughter, etc); it is not a book for small children because they would not understand the complexity of the symbolism; about a 1st grader would understand it for sure; beyond that, any age can enjoy; I can see how teachers like to read it w/classes to spur thinking & discussion

3-0 out of 5 stars The Three Little wolves and the Big Bad Pig
This book was hilarious! This book was outstanding because it told the original story from a whole different point of view. It has some extra details here and there. The originals story had the houses made up of bricks, straw, and sticks. This story has the houses made up of completely different things. This book is suitable especially for little kids because it has parts that are histerical! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL CONCEPT - YOU MIGHT WANT TO OWN THIS ONE
This is a different book in so many ways.It is really one that should be placed not only in the children's section of the library, but the adult also. The author gives us a brief explanation as to where the pictures came from (no spoiler here..read it yourself), and then the book begins. Each picture is all Allsburg.Wonderful black and white illustrations done in pencil and, as with his other books, each illustrtion is absolutely captivating and a delight to gaze at or study. Each picture is accompanied by just one line of a story with no explanation other than the picture itself. This is a wonderful book to add to a creative writing class, for any age, contemplate late evenings, or just to enjoy anytime. This work will certainly not hurt a childs imagination and infact can start the day-dreaming going in most adults.I highly recommend this one and highly recommend you add it to your home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Beautiful
When I first saw this book as a kid it really sparked my imagination. To this day I still get chills when I look at the pictures that speak volumes through mere implication.Allsburg is a visual master with a mind for sharp effective prose, to which this is a testament

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent point of view book!
my students loved the setup of this book. it is well written and the perspective of the ants is awesome. I'm going to get the rest of his books.thank you so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Children's lit. review
The story serves as a good example of how greed can be harmful to students. It also demonstrates how pictures may be used to help a reader understand text. For example, The author never names the crystal, but by looking at the pictures they can determine that it's sugar. The story is engaging for young readers because ants are small, non-threatening characters. Also, by using the ants to teach a lesson kids may not even realize they're learning. It is written in an attractive yet concise manner, and could be useful in teaching kids how to write text to describe pictures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disturbed by Racial Overtones
Chris Van Allsburg's books are some of the greatest in the history of children's literature. If you've never seen the Mysteries of Harris Burdick, or The Wreck of the Zephyr, you should select overnight delivery and get them tomorrow. But it seems a disturbing choice that, for his first book centered on African-American characters, he illustrates the young black girl lapping water from a dog's dish and otherwise behaving like an animal. Perhaps poor judgment is to blame, rather than racism; I choose to believe this is true. But I would have a hard time justifying this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Story With Great Illustrations
From the Coldecott Medal winning author of such beloved storybooks as JUMANJI and THE POLAR EXPRESS comes another whimsical story in the form of PROBUDITI!With beautiful illustrations and a premise that any child will love, this is another storybook that's sure to please.

5-0 out of 5 stars *IsaacNewton'sFavoriteFIGTALE*
From what place of antiquity does this Tale come?It doubtless comes from an intersection of mystery and imagination. The reader's response need only be Fits of Laughter . . . and . . . "Hail, Marcel"!
5-0 out of 5 stars good book
The sweetest fig is a great book.I liked reading it.My dog dreams of bones and chasing rabbits.Marcel is a really smart dog. Mr. bibot was mean to him.He deserved it. You should buy this book because it is good and you will love it. It is my favorite.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sweetest Fig
The Sweetest Fig story takes place in Paris, France. Monsiur Bibot, the coldhearted dentist, helped a patient who had a toothache. After Bibot helped her, all she could pay him with were two magical figs. In disbelief, Bibot took the figs and shoved her out of his office. When Bibot went home, he decided to eat one of the figs as an evening snack. It was the seetest fig Bibot had ever tasted, it just wasn't until the next morning that Monsieur Bibot realized it indeed was so magical that it had the power to make your dreams come true. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I love Chris VanAllsburg
This book has a great message, but it seems a little more forced than some of his other titles. All of his books are great for teaching children to infer meaning from text!

5-0 out of 5 stars An educational, magical children's book
When I read this book a tear came to my eye. I knew Chris Van Allsburg was right about recycling and keeping the earth clean. Ifthere are parents that have kids that actually like to keep the earth clean, I suggest they read it to their kids!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not consitent with the morals I want to pass to my children...

5-0 out of 5 stars Helprin delivers an elegant masterpiece
In "Veil" Mark Helprin and Chris Van Allsburgh offer up a mythictale which, while dark, will disturb and delight readers of all ages(though the elegant, sometimes labrynthine prose style will probably appealmore to older, more sophisticated readers). This book (as well as itspredecessor, "A City In Winter,") is no doubt destined to becomea classic, both to fans of fantasy and of children's literature for itsmoving story and its religious/philosophical themes.5-0 out of 5 stars extremely enjoyable triumph of the human spirit

It looks like a coloring book at the beginning.I can see one of my students picking it up and coloring in it before they realize it isn't for that at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love 'Bad Day'
A teacher I was working in the classroom with read this book to her 4th grade class. I was hooked! I read this book to children from the 1st grade to the 5th. I cannot read this book out loud without laughing! This is a wonderful book, I love it! Van Allsburg is now one of my favorite authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all ages!
Allburg is the best picture book writer out there. He gets a idea like a child would, such as how the cowboys in a picture book feel, and isn't afraid to go full speed ahead and explore it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Story
From the brilliant author and artist, Chris Van Allsburg, who brought us Jumanji and the Polar Express, comes this delightfully surreal story of the unusual help a boy gets when he's studying for his Geography test about landmarks of the world. There is very little text but the characteristic black and white line drawings of Van Allsburg speak volumes. There are lots of subtle details that make you want to look this book over again and again. The clever Geography lesson is sure to be remembered forever when learned in this fun-filled fashion. It's a great book with Van Allsburg's usual wry little twist at the end. Don't miss it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ben's Dream by Chris Van Allsburg
By the author of the well-known Jumanji and The Polar Express, Ben's Dream is full of incredible black and white line drawings. Beginning on a normal after-school afternoon, Ben leaves his reality (in typical Van Allsburg fashion)for far-away adventures visiting the world's major monuments.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Garden of Abdul Gasazi
This book was very enthralling to me. It was about a boy who has to take care of someone's evil dog. One day, they go for a walk and near a dog-forbidden magical garden. The leash breaks, and the boy must go find the dog. He goes up to the house of Abdul, and finds out that the dog has been transformed into a duck! He goes back home very worried. When the owner of the dog returns, he tells her the sad story. Then, all of a sudden, the dog appears.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH MORE THAN A BOOK
If there were a so-much-more-than-a-book category, this title would head the list. The Garden of Abdul Gasazi written and gloriously illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, and read by Jason Robards is a standout.5-0 out of 5 stars Another Good VanAllsburg Book
Very intriguing plot with excellent pencil drawings! A young boy is minding a dog for the day.Did a magician really turn the dog into a duck?Read this engaging book to find out. This is another fine product from VanAllsburg.(...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Zathura the great adventure!
Zathura was the greatest book of my life! I made a connection with this book. There is a robot and I used to have a robot toy.It would be so cool to have a robot. We have been studying about the solar system and the big brother loses his gravity.Question - what does Master Yoda know about science?Read this book and let me know what you thought! May the force be with you.Sebastian

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT HIS BEST BUT GOOD SOLID WORK
I am a big fan of Allsburg's art work. His capturing of shades is almost magical. This work is no exception.I was not as thrilled with the narrative of this one as I was with much of his other work though. This author obviously has a great imagination and great story telling abilities...he probably could have put them to better use here and been a bit more original. That being said, this is still a very good book and certainly worth owning.Recommend it highly.

2-0 out of 5 stars If youv'e read Jumanji, then you have read this book
Being the action packed sequel to Jumanji, Zarthura follows the same feel as its predecessor, with even a title mention to the board game Jumanji mentioned in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic Only Grows More Beautiful Over Time
Few books can leave an indelible impression like The Polar Express. The train journey to visit Santa is about every little child's dream... and Chris recounts it through a vivid imagination and passion for children's literature that was a huge inspiration for me. This project only grew more vibrant through its association with Tom Hanks and company...and this Anniversary Edition makes that very clear. I advise you to grab this and share it with your kids... I know they will love it as much as mine do!

5-0 out of 5 stars La Escoba de la Viuda : The Widow's Broom
Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 yr old LOVED the movie so this book is perfect !!
This book was what we wanted - the original book is not enough like the movie for us.
1-0 out of 5 stars No attention to detail
We saw the movie last year with my then 2 year old who loved the movie. We bought The Polar Express book and he loves having it read to him. This year we bought the DVD and he has watched it many times this Christmas season.Someone gave my mother The Magic Journey and when we read it to my now 3 year old he has found some of the errors in it and I have found more. Some of the pictures are directly from the movie and others are not.The Lonely Boy, Billy, is dressed differently at the beginning of the book than he actually was in the movie and is at the end of the book. The hero boy pulled the brake in the engine to stop for the cariboo, not the girl. There are more errors than this, too many to list.Don't buy this book, buy the original. It is beautifully written and illustrated. This book is a joke.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pictures in Book were dark and gloomy
I went to see the movie and it was great!!!
