    T. J. Jones is black, Japanese, and white; his given name is The Tao(honest!), and he's the son of a woman who abandoned him when she got heavilyinto crack and crank. As a child he was full of rage, but now as a senior inhigh school he's pretty much overcome all that. With the help of a goodtherapist and his decent, loving, ex-hippie adoptive parents, he's not onlyfairly even-keeled, he has turned out to be smart and funny. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It takes a book this good for people to want to censor it.
Chris Crutcher, Whale Talk (Dell, 2001)
3-0 out of 5 stars The best book
Whale Talk is a very interesting book, even though it is boring in the beginning and I almost brought the book back and almost picked another book to read but I decided not to and I'm glad I didn't because this is a great book. Its about a colored boy named T.J who was adopted because his mother did drugs and he was adopted to a mother who is a lawyer and he also has a dad and they are both very nice and they always wanted a kid but never could have one. T.J likes to swim, so he gets people together to make a swim team and a reason why he is doing this is because he wants him and the other people on his team to have there own letter jackets, because in there school you cant where a letter jacket unless you earned it by doing a sport or activity. So T.J gets a swim team together and the people on his swim team are people who dot really fit in with other people at school but they all get to know each other and become friends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book.
Whale Talk is about a teenager named T.J. Jones. He has a very hard and unhappy childhood, his mother leaves him and someone adopts him. The parents that adopted him are very nice and kind. His dad looks like a crazy biker, but is actually a soft-hearted man, especially when it comes to kids. His mom is a lawyer and helps T.J. alot. The storyline is basically T.J. trying to start a swimming team. He tries to gain more members and it the end he gets a swim team filled with misfits. They work hard and get to know each other good. The book ends with a surprising chapter, and it teaches T.J. a big lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learing how to catch fish as a kid is easier than I thought
I went fishing once when I was a kid, but I certainly did not know what I was doing.I caught a couple of fish, which we released, but had trouble getting the hooks out without really damaging the fish (yes, I have guilt over this; the reason for killing a fish would be to eat it).My kids have gone a couple of times with Granddad Nelson in the mountains of California and have all enjoyed success, but they were pretty much told where to stand and what to do and the only thing that mattered in the end was that my son was ticked that his younger sister caught the biggest fish (we have the photo to prove it).So we know virtually nothing about the art of fishing.Enter "The Barefoot Fisherman: A Fishing Book for Kids."5-0 out of 5 stars Very well done!
This "how to" book targets young kids; however, even adults who read it learn new things. 5-0 out of 5 stars For preparing the neophyte fisherman
The Barefoot Fisherman: A Fishing Book For Kids by experienced fishing enthusiast Paul Amdahl is an excellent and "reader friendly" introduction to the sport of fishing for aspiring young anglers of all ages and backgrounds. Individual chapters address catching a variety of different fish, from catfish to bass and walleyes, as well as lures, fly fishing, bait fishing and much more. The Barefoot Fisherman is an enthusiastically recommended "how to" guide for preparing the neophyte fisherman on how to get them most out of their fishing trip! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring role model
I love this book! It's a great story of how sports can shape your life in a positive way. Swimmers and non-swimmers alike will be inspired by Jenny's story. This great book is now available as an e-book for those of you who can't find a copy of the original printing. You can order here from amazon.com, the isbn is B0001GDOUQ.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure
Fast Lane To Victory is the third in Wish Publishing's outstanding "Anything You Can Do...New Sports Heroes For Girls" series and the story of swim champion Jenny Thompson. Swimming was what Jenny like best, but when her friends at school started to tease her and call her "tomboy" and "Too Tall Thompson", she felt the pressures placed on a lot of young girls to conform to social norms of what was "proper" for girls. Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure and became so successful as an athlete that she came to be called the "Fastest Swimmer in the World". Also very highly recommended for school and community library collections are the first two volumes in this superbly presented and inspiring sports oriented series for girls: A Drive To Win: The Story Of Nancy Lieberman (40-8, ...) and Sword Of A Champion: The Story Of Sharon Monplaisir (39-4, ...). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a great ride.....
This book was one of the most entertaining I have picked up an a long while. From the beginning, I was drawn into the story of the young man, who in my opinion, had an old soul. His constant struggles and his continual attempts to overcome them had me feeling what he was feeling.I was so angry at one point in the book, I wanted to rewrite what was happening. It is not often that I am so drawn into a book written for chidren. This is a wonderful text that I plan on integrating into 4th and 5th grade classrooms, as I feel that students, especially young males, can identify with the struggles the young man went through.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves to be drawn into a fantastic adventure story adn who likes to see good conquer all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Young Man and the Sea
After reading this book almost a year ago (and rating it a 4 star book), then discussing it in my classes and letting it ferment a while in my noggin, I am moving my rating to 5 stars. This book resonates.

I definitely loved this book and who wouldn't? I read it and was hooked! After the part where he's getting the fish, I glued my eyes to the pages. Editorial Review

One fine morning Mr. Gumpy decides it's a perfect day for an outing inhis little boat. Apparently, plenty of others think so, too. First some children ask to join him, then a rabbit, a cat, a dog, a pig, a sheep... Soon,Mr. Gumpy's boat is precariously full, and there's nowhere for anyone else to go--but overboard! This mild mariner takes everything in stride, though, and his guests are soon bellying up to a nice tea.Read more

Truly a classic, this one is a joy to read and kids just love it. The accumulative tale combined with glowing illustrations elicits preschool giggles every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pip pip!
This book falls firmly into a very specific genre of picture book literature. The old, if-one-more-person-gets-into-this-boat/mitten/car/etc.-bad-things-will-happen genre.Jan Brett's "The Mitten" does it.The more recent "One Dog Canoe" does it.But one of the first stories to have done it (and have a moral to boot) is the 1970 story "Mr. Gumpy's Outing".5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite is "everything."
This is a thoroughly delightful book. The simple story engages small children, and the illustrations are first-rate.I have read this book countless times to my two pre-schoolers, and have enjoyed the experience very much. This book is an excellent way to get children interested in books. Finally, I recommend the hardback over the paperback because of the higher quality of the illustrations in the hardback. ... I bought this book for my 3 kids, ages 7, 5 and 3, and we really enjoyed it. I heard about the author in my Literature Course, and wanted to read a book from her. I loved the drawings and the rhyming, which made a perfect book for a group reading. My kids enjoyed it too, specially with all those animals in the story.

    Editorial Review

Imagine passing a summer drifting up and down a slow-moving river, watching as cranes, turtles, raccoons, otters, and ducks grow accustomed to your presence. Envision days spent poling the raft through lily pads and grasses, glimpsing foxes through the trees on shore. On hot, sticky nights, picture a tent set up on the raft, from which you have an unobstructed view of huge bucks drinking from the moonlit river. Nicky has no idea what he's getting into when his father drops him off for the summer at his grandmother's cottage in the woods. And he's not especially pleased at the prospect. "There's nobody to play with ... She doesn't even have a TV." But this "river rat" is not the normal kind of grandma. Without pushing, she quietly allows Nicky to discover for himself the wonders of river life. Gradually, Nicky's interest in drawing the wildlife he sees brings him closer to his artist grandmother, and to an inner peace that looks as though it will last for a lifetime. Read more

It's a excellent book. You can imagine it really happening well you read it.It is a wonderful fast moving story.
2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful images, flat story
As a native of Wisconsin, I had much interest in the story of a boy, his grandmother, and wildlife on a Wisconsin river. The illustrations, admittedly the author's strong suit, were strong indeed. The images were of such excellent quality that they almost made the book worthwhile. The beginning of the story held promise, but ended up spending beyond its means into imagination.Either a story of the boy visiting his grandmother for the summer and experiencing adventure on the river, or an imaginary tale of prolific so-close-you-could-touch-it wildlife would have been good.Neither was completed, and the resulting combination left me feeling flat. The experts, my two and five year-old grandchildren lost interest before the book was halfway through.Maybe for children a little bit older?I wish hope Mr. LaMarche to continue to illustrate, and a story-teller to author the books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raft Revelation
The Raft is a book that captures the heart of the reader with its great illustrations and vivid details of na-ture. It is a story of a boy who travels to his grandmother's house for the summer but really does not want to go. Her house is by a river where Nicky discovers a raft and a love of nature. He soon realizes the raft attracts animals, encountering many he hadn't seen in real life. Animals that would normally be frightened by a human seem calmed by the raft Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I want a red canoe!
In first grade my daughter's school had a "Blue Book Bag" program: each week the students brought home a different book and a journal in a blue book bag. This was my favorite book of the year (I am a kindergarten teacher and was an English major, if that holds any weight). There is something charming and dreamy about Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe, which is a child's journal of a canoe trip.It was so easy to slip into the joyous adventure of the journey--feeling the heat of the afternoon, the beauty of the jumping fish, the quiet damp of the mist. The relationships between the adults and children implied a long history of love and confidence in each other. In addition, the book has text in unexpected places, so it is visually fun. There are a couple of recipes as part of the narrative and directions on how to tie a Two-Half Hitch knot, so you if you and your children really love the book, you can extend the experience. In the Accelerated Reader program, this book is third grade level, but my preschool daughter also liked it very much, so it can appeal to a wide range of ages (maybe 4-9?)Mother's Day is this Sunday, and I have told my girls that for Mother's Day I want a red canoe--or at least a hardback copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for primary age kids while studying rivers.
We used this book as a spring board for an environmental unit. We planned mapping, canoe safety, first aide safety, camping and landforms. We also planned a field trip to a local park with a creek and set up stations thatinvolved the different aspects of the book. We used newspaper ads and hadthe children decide what would be needed for a canoe trip and tied it inwith math, teaching money. This was a great book. ... Read more

This is one book you may actually get some tough, too cool, high school kids to read. It's quite well-written and realistic, dealing with some hard-hitting issues in an engaging manner.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless insights about friendship and life
I bought this book when I was still in high school, read it, then forgot all about it. I liked the story well enough, because it was about swimming. But years later while I was at university, I pulled this book out again and realized that there was much more to this story than swimming -- that, in fact, if there ever was a course on friendship, this book could be a primer. This is a Young Adults book, but even now that I'm out of university, I still like to read Stotan! once in a while to remind myself of what really matters in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a future fisherman!
This is the best children's fishing book I've found. The illustrations are nice and include names of different varities of fish and different lures, which means the child will actually learn about fishing instead of just reading a story about someone who is fishing. There is also a very nice glossary in the back with illustrated descriptions of lures that is great for older children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who need it
I am a librarian who loves the vast variety of humankind.I love knowing that when I walk down the street I could easily be walking past the greatest parachutist or professional kite flyer in the world, and I would never know. The hobbies and talents of the people of this world takes my breath away.Which makes reviewing a title like, "A Good Day's Fishing" an incredibly complex arrangement.First of all, I have never fished. Not a day of my life. This isn't because I dislike fishing or find it disgusting in some way.I've just never been a situation where someone handed me a pole and a tackle box and said, "Let's catch a few" (or words to that extent).Like many people I've flipped past fishing shows on PBS on cloudy Sunday afternoons and idly wondered who watches that stuff. But I have every respect for the people who enjoy the sport.Author James Prosek enjoys the sport. He enjoys it so much that he's written and illustrated multiple texts on trout, fly fishing, and other such topics. He's sort of the author/illustrator prodigy of the fish world. And now, at the grand old age of 29, he's switched his focus to children's books. No matter how big an author, no matter what their specialty, sooner or later everyone tries to write a book for kids. And that's where I come in.Looking "A Good Day's Fishing" over, I was baffled. As I've mentioned, I'm not exactly experienced in the hobby.I mean, I really enjoyed the recent children's book by Cynthia DeFelice, "The Missing Manatee", that outlines fishing in great exciting detail. But a picture book that simply catalogues the things you need to catch yourself a crappie or a pumpkinseed sunfish.... let's just say that there's a very specific type of child that's going to find this book enthralling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our favorite nightime story book
We really like to use this book to read to our son (2 year old) because it contains a little story, it's short enough that he can follow it, there is plenty of pictures to keep him interested with as many occasion to teach him some new vocabulary.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Summertime Fun
This is a very nice book.In reading a story about D.W. and her family going to the beach and insisting that she does not like and does not want to get in the water, children learn an important lesson about trying newthings.Once D.W. does give the water a try, she finds out she absolutelyloves it.My favorite part of the book elaborates on what D.W. does in thewater:She splashes, she dunks, she dives, she jumps, etc.The actualwords in the story are much more lush and colorful, however. It's a bookyou can have a lot of fun reading aloud to and with children. It's also anice introduction to talking with children not only about the beach, butalso the importance of not being afraid of or too stubborn to try somethingnew.A definite recommendation for young children learning to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loved Sanoe in Blue Crush, Loved this book.
Incredible, beautiful book! Sanoe proves that she's not just a great surfer and actress, she knows how to put a book together.I have been surfing for 3 years and I wish Sanoe had put his out when I started. I heard about the book on a KROQ radio ad in L.A. announcing her booksigning, but I couldn't make it, so I went to the store to check it out. I found 4 other girl's surfing guides! - they must have all just come out because I've never seen them. I sat down and plowed through all of them, and I'll keep this short and try and save people time and money if they are just going to buy one of these books, here is why Sanoe's is much better (but you'll see for yourself if you compare): 1. It's extremely well written, funny, and it's entertaining -- there's a continuous flow of interesting material, along with comics, photos, charts, and sweet graphics. My friends who don't surf checked it out and now they are starting to get the vibe of why the sport is so great. That's how this book is so great - it communicates the vibe of surfing. Bottom line: Sanoe's book is better written.2. Sanoe's "How To" part -about a third of the book - is very easy to follow, she takes the reader through it step by step, with tons of tight illustrations. I swear to God one of the other girl's guides has stick-figure drawings. Gimme a break2. Sanoe's book is in color - the other books are black and white or have just one color. Color crushes black and white. 3. Best I can tell, Sanoe is the only professional surfer of all the authors. As such, you bet your butt she knows what she is talking about when it comes to surfing.4. Sanoe has also been a model, so her fashion sections are great- she gives hints on all kinds of surfwear and beauty hints also. 5. The book is just really well-organized - going through the history of surfing, the herstory, the fashion, the dangers and how to proceed safely, sun and skin safety, all really interesting and helpful - I seriously could have avoided a few painful moments had I read through this before I learned. 6. Sanoe goes into the empowering aspects for girls and women - this is great material... i was thinking some of this when I was learning. You really do build your courage, discpline and confidence when you learn to surf. You basically have to as you get better. 7. Overall, Sanoe's tone is light and fun, and she has a huge glossary of all the surf terms... in case you want to get into the lingo of the sport. Seriously, a color book at his price...you absolutely will be thrilled with your value here. I bought 6 for gifts -- taking out a nice chunk of my xmas shopping. I would say that you definitely don't even need to be a future surfer to enjoy this book. The book is so full of interesting things about the ocean and it's so motivating in general. When are her new movies coming out? Cheers and aloha. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Race
It's about a boy named Jason and his brothers, living in Dawson City. They have their own sawmill called Hawthorn Brothers Sawmill, where they work to make a living. One day all of the brothers were at a place eating, and a guy starts to kick this dog sitting there, so Ethan, the oldest brother, tells the man not to kick the dog. They got into a pushing match, but somebody in the crowd yelled at Ethan not to fight the guy, because he was pushing a former boxer Sydney Mauler. Then somebody said they should have a boxing match, and they had one two weeks later. Ethan ended up winning and becoming famous. He stopped working at the mill and started to drink and gamble a lot. He was winning everyday, and then one day he started to lose, and everyday he lost more and more until he was broke. Then a lawyer took their mill by having Ethan sing a paper when he was drunk, so they lost their mill. Jason's old friend Jamie Dunavant comes back to Dawson City and they fall in love. Jason told her he was going to Nome for to make money to buy the mill back. Jamie then found a contest. It was a race to Nome for two people and $20,000 the prize. It would be able to buy the mill back. So can Jamie and Jason win the race and get the mill back? You'll have to read the book to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book!My kids Love it!
This book is so cute.I was having trouble with my eight year old wanting to read.I got this book thinking it unique, and may capture her interest since we love to go to the beach and watch the surfers. She loves it!We had to buy them all.The illustrations are very cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK ROCKS
I bought this book as sort of a joke, because it sounded so typically California sufer dude. And it is, but it is also awesome.Children love the colorful pictures and rhythmic language.Adults never get tired of reading it to the kids because it is so funny. This book now forms the centerpiece of my standard baby gift for new parents (along with a beach pail, swimsuit, or other appropriately aquatic-themed item).Everyone who's received one has told me they and their children love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way fun, way cool, and as the Hawaiians say: Talks story
My kids like the book so much that they drew their own pictures of rhinos surfing.Best of all, they are bugging me to take them surfing with me.Read more
