4-0 out of 5 stars Home was a good book
A very good book to read on the subject. Well written and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures Worth Thousands of Words!
Jeannie Baker's "Home" is a model for a book without text:The pictures are compelling, the story flows easily, and there's enough intrinsic narrative to stimulate discussion.Although much of the material is relevant to social and economic issues, the gorgeous collages and everyday scenes will appeal to infants and toddlers, as well as older siblings and adults.Publisher Greenwillow displays its usual excellent production values. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a fabulous book!
Wow, wow, wow!Another reviewer said this was the best picture book of 2004 and I'm inclined to agree: it's simply a fabulous book, beautifully produced and rich in meaning (even without text!) The book takes us through a neighborhood in transition, from a slum to a service area to a vibrant, tree-filled paradise.Through it all, the story of a young girl growing up weaves it together and provides a timeline that is easy for small children to comprehend. It's a simple story but eloquently presented to viewers through the incredible collages of paper, fabric, and pressed plant materials that are rich in detail and meticulously arranged. The author closes the book with a beautiful passage, "People are discovering the need to nurture and to be nurtured by the unique character of the places where they live.It takes time, as this book shows. But the choice is ours to make - having simply a place to live or, by understanding the land and caring for it, belonging to a living home."While this book would be read and read again by young children, it would also be a useful addition to art curriculum for older youth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!
The fourth book is longer and better!A must have for a b-day present. Melanie's boyfriend Miguel come by. Then she also like Justin, a boy in her class, I think she should stay with Miguel.Well that's my opinion! Anyway, this book is great from ages 9-13, or if your grownup, you can read it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Melanie Martin Por Favor !!
Although this is a great book for children - I LOVED reading it myself! Carol Weston does an amazing job of getting into the mind of Melanie Martin - a quirky 5th grader from Manhattan whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of Miguel from Spain... I'd forgotten what it's like to be that age and fret about boys, best friends and annoying little brothers - such a treat! I would definitely recommend this book (and series) to anybody - what other book makes learning about New York, Art and other cultures so much fun?!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever!!!!!!
I LOVE MELANIE!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly Wordless Story Book
This book was highly recommended in Teaching Reading in the 21st Century for use in kindegarten and first grade classrooms. The children can make up a story to fit the pictures. It lets them use their imagination and helps them understand story structure.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Animal Book for Babies and Toddlers - a review of "Early Morning in the Barn"
This is one of Nancy Tafuri's lesser known books, but is quite a nice one.In this mostly wordless book (there is no text except for animal sounds like `cheep, cheep' and `moo'), a clutch of chicks visits their barnyard neighbors.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 plus stars
This is my very favorite book for young girls.First and most importantly, it is really fun to read.I can just picture an 8-year-old girl reading this during summer vacation. After reading this book, how could a kid not fall in love with reading books for recreation? It is loaded with thrilling adventure.Even though the main character is a girl, she is not a "girly girl" at all.She is an outdoor farm girl who loves nature and has an active curiosity about the world around her.The characters are lovely, and lovingly portrayed. The sketches of Garnet's pesky younger brother, restless older brother, mother and father stressed out by trying to make a farm work at the end of the depression and drought, her friend Citronella, and the people of Garnet's farm community are amazing writing and enjoyable, educational reading. There are many interesting stories about people who Garnet meets during her beautiful and exciting summer.Citronella's grandmother tells a story about growing up as a settler which is not just interesting because it is about pioneer life, meeting Indians, and her childhood adventures, it may also encourage young readers to find out about their own grandparent's stories. The account of the family firing limestone to build a new barn is fascinating, and the family meets and adopts a wonderful boy who they encounter while spending the night minding the kiln. His story really brings home the realities of the depression, when adults and children travelled the rails and backroads of America to find work and food. The contrast between Garnet, who loves the land, her older brother, who has seen the stress his father goes through to wring his living from it and wants to get away, and the young hobo who has experienced the wider world and loves the steadiness and bounty of the farm are deeper elements to the story. The story of farm life, weather, and nature is wonderful, and I am sure many, many children have fallen in love with nature and reading from this classic book.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book here
this book is a great book
5-0 out of 5 stars Summertime and the living is easy
The Newbery Award winning books of the 1930s went through an interesting phase that was never again to be repeated.Starting with "Caddie Woodlawn" (1935), continuing with "Roller Skates" (1936), and capitulating with the delightful "Thimble Summer" (1938) these books all followed spunky independent females with little to no regard for the traditional roles women had always carried. But while "Caddie" and "Roller Skates" were period pieces that ultimately ended with the girls giving in to society's restraints, "Thimble Summer" trumps this trend. In it, we have a farm girl named Garnet who has a load of exciting summer adventures and who ends her tale wearing sailor pants doing hand stands over and over again in a pasture.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Brooklynites of All Ages!
An excellent, albeit silliy, addition to the library or coffee table of Brooklynites of any age. Granted, it isn't "all-inclusive," but what pop-up book (or any book on Brooklyn, for that matter) is?

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings Brooklyn to life...
It is really nice to see a resurgence of such childhood favorites as the "pop-up" book.Truly the first multimedia toys, these books add a new dimension (pun most certainly intended) to the written word.4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, fun and colorful.
Each foldout page in this book was designed by a different person. Sometimes they're disappointing as pop-ups, but there are some bright moments. The cover by Maurice Sendak allows you to see behind it into how the movements are made. The brownstones page is silly, with stupid bug cartoons everywhere. The library is really disappointing, with no real focus and no real view of what the building looks like. The art museum is just lovely, and is probably the best -- but then, it's by Sabuda (my favorite pop-up artist)! The botanic garden could have been the most colorful and beautiful page -- instead, it's childish and dull. The carousel is fun, with horses popping out at you. The Brooklyn Bridge is nice, but the flavors of Brooklyn are worthless. Coney Island is fun, with a rotating Ferris wheel. The book comes in a handy-dandy re-sealable plastic cover. So if you're fond of Brooklyn this will be a really nice memento. But I do NOT recommend it for reading out loud to children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A cheerful picturebook that emphasizes the importance of community building blocks
Quinito's Neighborhood is a bilingual English/Spanish picturebook by Ina Cumpiano about the local neighborhood of a young boy, Quinito. Quinito knows that his neighborhood consists of much more than just buildings, streets and shops - its most important element is all the people he knows and loves, such as his cousin who studies how to make people laugh in clown school and his aunt who paints murals to make the streets brighter. The bold color illustrations by Jose Ramirez strongly resemble the simplified yet vibrant artwork style of murals themselves. A cheerful picturebook that emphasizes the importance of community building blocks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good Dog by Avi
This was a really good book.I enjoyed it so much, I read it at least thrice and every time I re-read it is still a wonderful book.It gives you a look at the world through a dog's eyes.I think that every dog owner - no make that every pet owner, should read this book.Actually it would be enjoyable to even someone without a pet.Not only is this a great book for kids, but I think adults would even love this book!

This book is my very favorite.I love the message.I love the characters.I love Fanny's self esteem.Read it--you'll love it too!Go Fanny!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Book!
This is one of the best five or so children's books in the world. Most of the other reviewers have explained it accurately, and I given by people who apparently don't grasp the point of the book (and so ironically need it the most). Why are there so few books out there showing that fantasy doesn't beat reality when reality is built of strong bonds of love? This book does a great job of suggesting that point.

1-0 out of 5 stars A real squirter
You can guess how disappointed I was when I received this book. It certainly wont be added to my Knave, 40plus, and Asian cross-dresser collection. If you like flaps the size you get on a 747, the smell of sticky fish, and tide marks up to your ears, then dont make the same mistake I did and buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner across the cultures
What a fabulous find! This book arrived today and we have read it 7 times already - and we are all still enthralled. My 2 year old loves the animal pictures and my 3 (almost 4) year old loves living the day with this child so similar to herself yet so far away. The writing is as rich and simple as the rural life it depicts; the illustrations lush and witty.
5-0 out of 5 stars Juan.Not wan.
Essentially I've come to the conclusion that Ana Juan could come to my home and hit me over the head with multiple frying pans and I would STILL worship at her feet. You know that fantasy everyone has where a famous children's book illustrator walks up to you one day and says, "I made this incredibly beautiful painting, pre-framed, just for you"?You don't have that one?Well I do.And the illustrator in question would be Ana Juan.My goodness me, how that woman can paint. From her Fellini-esque, "The Night Eater" to the biography of "Frida" that only SHE could have illustrated, Juan is consistently brilliant in whatsoever she chooses to do.So when first-time picture book author Kelly Cunnane found that, "For You Are a Kenyan Child" was to fall into the creative hands of Juan, one can only imagine her response. The pairing of an artist who's picture book work, prior to this title, has been almost solely fantastical with a playful but realistic author makes for a unique book. One that reads as well as it looks. 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the language and culture
Great Book!My children and I love reading it. Even my two year old sits through it every time.My six year old and four year old caught on quickly to the Swahili phrases that are used.We will be traveling to Kenya this summer and I was looking for a good book to introduce them to a little of the everyday life.We enjoyed the culture and language covered in this book.A Kenyan friend pointed out to us, however, that he does not eat bugs as depicted in the story, but even he liked the book overall (even though it is written from an American point of view).Very enjoyable.I would definitely recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Adaptive book versions for "Little House".
The Series "My First Little House Books" is a great tool for Special Education adaptations of the Core Literature "Little House in the Big Woods".I've used this series in general education classrooms, too, to supplement the Core Lit text. The children's positive responses to the beautiful illustrations made my day! The beautifully portrayed color illustrations capture essential details from the book chapters and make the stories come alive for all of the students. Two thumbs up for this series!

I bought this book for my 1st grade daughter, hoping she would love the Laura Ingalls Wilder tradition as I had as a child. She did and I was excited because she could read this book herself and she was empowered!I only wish that you could buy the other 13 titles of the "first books" in a collection or gift set like you can the original series.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Series!
I ordered the whole series for my soon to be 4 year old for Christmas. She is absolutely delighted with the stories. The illustrations are beautiful.A must have for younger children. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Offensive
I think this book is offensive. It acts as if the prairie is better than any other place. It also makes fun of people who don't live in the prarie. Our teacher read it to us and a good part of the class hated it. We just survived the blistering cold, and then this author comes and says we don't know cold. If you're not from the prarie, do not read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teachers in South Dakota!
This is an awesome book! Coming from Eastern South Dakota (plains) it is just so perfect! I taught a lesson to students (4th grade) who live in Western South Dakota (the Black Hills) and we compared the two regions of South Dakota. We then wrote a poem that used the author's structure as a guide. We entitled the poem "If you're not from the Black Hills..." It went over great and the kids loved it! It also correlates to 4 state standards and probably many more! This book made me cry! Awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for children and adults!
This is a wonderfully warm and inviting depiction of the plains region. For those of us who are from the prairie, the book stirs appreciation and love for the land that has helped shape us.For those who are not from the prairie, the author offers a viewpoint that helps in understanding the beauty of the land and the people of the plains. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars little farm in the ozaks
nice to read more about Laura's life after she moved away from the prairy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Rocky Ridge!
This is the second volume in the Rose Years Little House books, and I think it may be better than the first! It continues the story of Laura Ingalls Wilder`s daughter,Rose Wilder!Rose is finally getting adjusted to her new life in their little farm in the ozarks, and in this book, she meets new friends including two brothers named Swiney and Abe,two twins named Dora and Cora, and later befriends a town girl named Blanche.Rose and her Mama and Papa also face many challenges in this book;but later have better adventures!Rose almost burns the house down when leaving the bread baking, but she and her friend Swiney put it out. Some old friends also return in this book including Laura`s friend Alva,M.r and Mrs. Cooley,M.r. and Mrs. Cooley`s sons named Paul and George, and of course Rose and her Mama(Laura) And Papa(Almanzo)!Roger Lea Macbride has the same touch for writing pioneer stories and making them magical as Laura Ingalls Wilder did!Definately reccomended for any Little House or Laura Ingalls Wilder fan!
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story! Five stars!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Colorful pictures and easy reading
This sort of book is very amusing to young and old, but from when a child is only a few months old it is already appealing due to all the primary colors on each page. When a child learns to read to himself I would say this is probably a very good choice as it is very comprehensible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful illustrations - George is back!
For those who don't already know, Curious George is the beloved monkey hero of H.A. Rey's children's books.Mr. Rey (along with help from his wife Margret) wrote and illustrated seven of the Curious George books. The "original seven" are available individually or all-in-one as part of "The Complete Adventures of Curious George, which should be the first "George" books one should read - they are still the best by far.But for true fans of Curious George, those seven books just aren't enough.Since H.A. Rey's passing away several years ago, attempts have been made to continue the series; some more successful than others -but none really matching the originals.Often those "new adventure" books have been formulaic and even poorly illustrated.Although I haven't read all of the "new" George books, one of the better ones is "Curious George's Dream" - that's one of the few I thought was worthy of the "originals", even though still not quite up to the H.A. Rey standard. So how does this latest effort, "Curious George in the Big City", compare?4-0 out of 5 stars Curious George in the Big City Review
Authors Margret and H.A. Rey's wrote the children's book Curious George in the Big City, and this book is another Curious George adventure from this husband and wife team. This children's story is about a little curious monkey and his adventure of the big city, but his whole adventure was without his friend in the yellow hat.Curious George in the Big City is a good book for children because it carries on the classic story, colorful images, and moral meanings that have been found in the Curious George books in the past 50 years.Read more
