1-0 out of 5 stars Way too violent
This book is way too violent for me to read to my children.Capital punishment, chopping off heads, a little boy drowning.. No way.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Five Chinese Brothers is a delightful picture book based on an old Chinese tale.
Originally published in 1938, it centers around five brothers who each have a unique quality. The First Chinese Brother has the ability to swallow the sea. The Second Chinese Brother has an iron neck. The Third Chinese Brother can stretch and stretch and stretch his legs. The Fourth Chinese Brother can not be burned. And the Fifth Chinese Brother can hold his breath indefinitely. It is when the First Brother is accused of a crime he did not commit, and sentenced to death, that each brother uses his unique ability to save him.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not age appropriate
Leaving the racism issue aside, this is not a book for small children. Even if everything turns out OK in the end, I'm not prepared to expose my children to issues of capital punishment and the drowning death of a small boy. Small children forget the ending and focus on the scary parts in between. Perhaps I'm a softie, but let's allow them to be children and not worry about being wrongfully accused of murder and sentenced to death by beheading. Just because it's a classic doesn't make it appropriate reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Daughter of the Mountains
Like another reviewer, I read this book in junior high and never forgot it.I remember trying to make hot buttered tea, as the heroine drinks it all the time; I found it undrinkable. My granddaughter has a Lhasa Apso now and I've been trying to find the book - 7th grade was 45 years ago and I'd forgotten the title. Thanks to many online searches using: dog, Tibet, girl, childrens' book etc. here it is and I'm ordering it for her today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Creative and Inspiring!
I thought that this book was great because it shows what an amazing relationship a child and a dog can have.It also is so very detailed and descriptive, that at some parts I almost thought I was reading a book of poetry.Momo stands up for herself and proves she can.5-0 out of 5 stars I read&loved this book as a girl

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, engrossing series.
I was seven or eight when Ifound the Freddy books on tape at my library.I checked one out and am still listening and reading them five years later. My parents constantly wonder why I read such easy and, to them, childish books.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Teen's Point of View
The Freddy books are so great! They are especially good for reading out loud and the whole family will find them exciting and hilarious. They're good books for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and entertaining:dynamite!
Brooks wrote the Freddy series between 1927 and 1958.They combine superb character development, unbelievable educational content, and generally mesmerizing entertainment. They are appropriate for reading to children as young as five or six, and make excellent readers for children from nine to as old as early teens.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book Which Got Me Into Reading
In 1955 I was eight, and the eldest of three brothers. My mother couldn't go to the grocery store with all of us so she'd drop me off at the children's room at the West Hartford, CT, public library, and pick me up on the way home.It was there that I discovered Freddy, and that pig spoke my language! It was Freddy, his wonderful compatriots on the Bean farm, and their fabulous adventures, that started me out right.Freddy Goes to Florida is the first of the series, and is where I recommend starting your own adventures with Freddy the Pig.Hats off to Overlook Press for re-publishing these books in their original look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy's migration to Florida with other farm animals!
Mr. Bean's farm animals are very intelligent. They can read and some can write.A pig named Freddy gets the idea from a sparrow to migrate. He,a cow,a dog,a horse, two spiders, two ducks, and a cat all migrate to Florida for the Winter theyhave an exciting trip there and an exciting trip back to New York they meet the President and alligators and much, much, more. This book is full of adventure and humor.I recommend it to everyone. There are other Freddy books such as Freddy the Detactive,Freddy and the Bean Home News,Freddy and the Space Ship.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New York-Florida issue

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fire Breathing Pig!!
I am beginning to realize that I was severely deprived as a young child. The little corner library where I got my first library card actually had a pretty poor selection of books for young readers. As a result, I grew up thinking that there were only a few Freddy the Pig books.Actually Walter Brooks wrote 26 of them. That makes Freddy every bit the equal of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Many of these books are out of print now, and hard to find, but The Overlook Press has been gradually returning them to circulation.Set in the rural Northeast at a time (the late twenties and thirties), the books recall a time when the world seemed simpler and more full of grace."Freddy and the Dragon" is the last Freddy novel, published in the year of Brooks death, 1958.5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy and The Dragon, a GREAT book!
Someone is wreaking havoc in Centerboro, destroying gardens, stealing bicycles and breaking windows.Animal tracks, including pig tracks, are at the scenes of the crimes. The Bean animals are being accused of thesecrimes. Freddy attempts to track down the crooks, including a headlesshorseman, with the help of a friendly dragon! As always, there is lots ofaction.Read more

Wonerful, Triumph, for all ages.
4-0 out of 5 stars "I've got good brains, but they aren't the kind that think easily."
The second in the utterly charming "Freddy the Pig" series, "Freddy the Detective" chronicles the adventures of Freddy and his barnyard friends as they delve deep into the world of clues, suspects and the criminal world. In the great tradition of Sherlock Holmes, there is a disguise involved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Some pig
I run a bookgroup for homeschoolers and have the very great pleasure of introducing this bunch of alternative education kiddies to some of the great classics in children's literature. It can be a very rewarding experience.Once in a while, however, the kids teach me about books that I've never heard of. One of the children I organize has been obsessed with the "Freddy" books for years.Occasionally he would ask me if I had read them or he'd promote them to the group. In my initial ignorance, I assumed that he was referring to the Freddy the Hamster books by Dietlof Reiche. Those books are very good but the kid was actually referring to the classic Freddy the Pig series dating back to the 1930s.Recently these books have been earning themselves an entirely new audience and children everywhere are engulfed in a kind of newfangled Freddy fever.I picked up "Freddy the Detective" (not realizing that "Freddy In Florida" is actually the first book in the series) to give the books a look-see.I did this with a kind of snide attitude that went something along the lines of, "well I'm sure these books have aged poorly over the years and that the only reason kids are reading them because their parents made them".Oh how wrong a children's librarian can be.The Freddy books are marvelous.Author Walter R. Brooks is marvelous. In fact, "Freddy the Detective" is so wry, well-written, and delightful that I am truly shocked that more people are not aware of this series.Consider me a convert of the pig.One who will be singing his praises to the masses every chance I get.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Freddys!
There is a lot of baffling clues in this story and Freddy doesn't know what to make of them.Worst of all, Mr. Bean and all of the other animals, except for Jinx the cat, believe that Freddy is a thief!Freddy must find out the truth to save his name.He is determined and proclaims that he would leave the farm and not come back until he has caught the real thief and nailed its hide to the barn!

I have read these books, the entire series, all 18 or so of them, once every 3-4 years for the last 2 decades, and I love them all! Having them republished is a great boon to the world! 4-0 out of 5 stars well written but in sufficiently hyper-pluralistic
As Freddy navigates his ways through the labryinth of agencies in Washington DC, the reader delights in the foibles of the bureaucracy - the most obvious one being the cross purposes with which regulatory agencies act, particularly in their briefings to oversite committees (which are treated insufficiently, for my tastes). The major flaw, however, is Freddy's view (and I'm not sure that Freddy is not merely a mouthpiece for the author) that there is a unitary explanation for government inefficiency : namely, corporate influence.Hyper pluralism (the theory that AMerican government offers so many entry points to so many different interest groups that any attempt to influence policy boy one interest group can inevitably be negated by a different group using a different policy making institution - a reality exacerbated by our federalist system!) is dealt with only in passing - when Freddy passes a hyper pluralist who mutters "I need a drink"..a clear case of bias on Freddy's (and maybe the author's) part.If I wanted this type of Marxist tripe, I'd go to a university (a state funded one mind you)...
5-0 out of 5 stars Brooks Captures the Essence of Politics
When the Beans leave for an extended trip to Europe, it's up to the animals to run the farm themselves. They start up The First Animal Bank of Centerboro, teaching themselves what banks are all about in the process. Then they decide to start up the First Animal Republic, and to elect a president.Interestingly one of the candidates is an outsider, blown in by an ill wind.Of all the animals Brooks might have chosen for this role, it's a woodpecker! And from Washington DC, no less!Have to love it.This woodpecker says he knows better than the locals what's good for them, and starts using dirty tricks to win the election. The local candidate is Mrs. Wiggins, the cow.Our favorite pig, Freddy, is her campaign manager, and there is so much trickery on both sides that we don't know whether to laugh or cry.As usual, there are lots of lessons for the careful reader to learn. These animals are so very like us.

3-0 out of 5 stars Freddy Goes Into Politics
This is one of the earlier Freddy adventures, before Brooks had really hit his stride as a writer. In this book, the barnyard organizes an election and a woodpecker, who is a smooth talker, winds up almost controlling the Bean farm.As usual, there are morals aplenty without being preached at the reader, but, given the 1930s political background of this book (Huey Long and some other major players were obviously in Brooks' mind as he wrote this) I suspect adults will like it more than the kids, although my own children enjoyed it.From another author, this would've gotten at least four stars, but Brooks raises the standard. ... Freddy is helping his old friend, Mr. Camphor, with a couple of problems. One of them is his aunts; one is too gloomy and another is just plain mean. Probably before you were born, the bookmobile would stop off at our school and I looked forward to reading "Freddy" books. I enjoyed all of his adventures and friends (Jinx had a few adventures of his own). Now those books are collector's items and rarely show up in used book stores. As much as I miss the originals he is back and just as ornery as ever. One Day I hope the earlier one will get republished. I thaught that freddy goes to the north pole was a great book enjoyable for all ages. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes adventure stories. It is one of those books that you never wan't to end.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Awkward Sequel
"Freddy goes to Florida" was an instant classic, so I can see why a sequel followed.Unfortunately, Brooks and Wiese have some trouble figuring out exactly how to handle it.3-0 out of 5 stars Freddy the Pig meets Santa Claus
This is the second of the Freddy the Pig books written by Walter R. Brooks. The earlier books, while terrific for children, are not as entertaining for adults as the later books. The Freddy books are great moral instruction without ever being preachy, always entertaining. In this book, the Bean farm animals decide to visit the North Pole. They have adventures galore on the way and, at the Pole, help save Santa from some well-meaning pirates who are trying to bring efficiency to Santa's workshop. I didn't rate this book higher only because later Freddy books have an even greater appeal. For children, this should be at least a four-star ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Is that a Pig Playing Football...Or a Football Player Being a Pig?
Despite the title of the book, and despite the title of this review, this sixteenth volume in the Freddy the Pig series is much less about football, and much more about the Bean farm animals saving the day once more. This time the antagonist (Freddy readers like learning new words) is the dishonest Mr. Doty. He's so dishonest that Doty isn't even his real name.Animal-hater Mr. Garble recruits Mr Doty to pretend he's Mrs. Bean's long lost brother, to whom the Beans owe a large amount of money. In order to prevent the Beans from paying him, Freddy steals all the Beans' money from the bank.Where he hides it is for you to find out when you read the story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Bean's Brother's Keeper
Walter Brooks begins this sixteenth tale of our indomitable porcine poet with a great stir on the Bean Farm.Mrs. Bean's long lost brother has been discovered, and is coming to the farm for a reunion. When Aaron Doty makes his appearance, it is with mixed reviews. He is generally nice enough, although he has a marked affection for telling tall tales, but he has a suspicious mean streak. In the final analysis, the animals come to suspect that he is a fraud, taking advantage of the fact that Mrs. Bean's brother left when she was quite young. When they find out that Doty is conspiring with sneaky Mr. Garble from Centerboro, they are convinced.5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy the Pig: Not Just for Kids
As usual, Freddy gets into trouble and into the adventure by trying to help his friends. In this case, Mrs. Bean's long-lost brother turns up and wants his share of the inheritance, something that will bankrupt Mr. Bean and possibly ruin the farm. At the same time, he is needed to help the Centerboro high school football team beat its rival, Tushville, who has ringers playing on their team. The action is fast and furious, and a delight to read.Brooks and his Freddy books are a godsend to parents who read to their children. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Freddy the Moralist
In 1944, Freddy went up against that violent young lout, Horace Winch, and taught him to be a weekend painter (in "Freddy and Mr. Camphor").But that wasn't enough! In "Freddy and the Popinjay," published the next year, he's out to reform the rock-slinging thug, Jimmy Witherspoon, and his tight-fisted father. The title of this one could have been changed to "Freddy the Moralist."5-0 out of 5 stars Near the top of my Favorite Freddies list
I don't recall reading Popinjay when I first discovered Freddy back in 1960 (or thereabouts), but I've just read the new Overlook Press 2001 reprint. This story features the familiar, lovable Freddy characters--and a few new ones--portraying a message that we all need to remember these days: Don't judge people by appearances.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Popinjay Goeth Before the Fall
This book was written just as Walter R. Brooks was hitting his stride as a writer, and is one of the better Freddy books.A robin friend of Freddy's needs glasses, and from there the story gets wilder. The book is great fun and, as in all the Freddy books, has some lessons to impart to the reader, one of them being that conceit is not only a vice, but a rather silly one. This lesson is taught, as always, without a preachy tone intruding on the story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful tale based on a true story
When Waino and Ivar find a moose in their father's stable, the critter looked so sad they couldn't bear to shoot him. The final solution to this unique situation is as heartwarming as it is entertaining. This is a delightful tale based on a true story from Biwabik, Minnesota, and replete with historical information about life for Finnish immigrant children in Minnesota. When it was originally published, Honk: The Moose won distinction as a Newbery Honors Book in 1936.It went on to win the Lewis Carol Shelf Award in 1970, and was listed in Cattermole's 100 Best Children's Books of the 20th Century. Now in a new edition from Trellis Publishing, Phil Strong's Honk: The Moose (wonderfully illustrated by Kurt Wiese) is once again introduced to a whole new generation of appreciative children. ...
