5-0 out of 5 stars Good starting school book
I really enjoyed the book. I look forward to sharing this book with my students to start off our school year together. I'm going to use the book to help them get an idea to be creative about his or her own summer vacation to write a great story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for back to school
I'm a teacher and like to read this book to my students in the first week of school. Then I pose a challenge to them.I challenge them to tell me about their own summer vacation, but like Wallace, start out with the truth, and then let their imagination take over.I get completely ridiculous and fun stories about trips to the lake that end up as coronations as supreme master of planet zoorg.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as much to this story
Nice story about a boy's imagination but not much else to the story.GREAT pictures, as usual by Mark Teague.Read more

This book is a wonderful version of the male Cinderella! The story keeps your attention and the illustrations are well drawn! It is a super way to do a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the treasured classic Cinderella!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful revision of the classic Cinderella Story!
My entire family love to read this book. My mother bought it for my son at age 4. When my husband and I read it to our son and daughter the can't help but to laugh and enjoy the story. You can't help but to read the book with a southern/western draw because it makes the story more interesting. I would strongly recommend this for any family to add to their home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Child needs Cowboy Small
This is a great book, very light hearted and catchy.Be prepared to keep it handy, it's one of those books you will read it to your child, niece, nephew.... over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our family's all time #1 Lois Lenski book ever!!!!
You can't go wrong with Cowboy Small. Even if your child isn't into being a cowboy, they will like this story. My 2 girls (now ages 22 and nearly 13) both LOVED Cowboy Small! I read it over and over and over and over...we had it on permanent checkout from the library it seems!! Then the library gave it to us when they were clearing out worn books...we were thrilled and treasured this book! I read this book so much I can still recite most of it. My son is 7 and he likes to play cowboy and he likes his reissue copy of Cowboy Small, but it is interesting that my girls asked for it to be read to them much more often. Our children's bouncy horse even got named Cactus in honor of Cowboy Small's horse. I recently gave this book to a 60+ yr. old friend who has horses and dresses in cowboy clothes, and he loved it! He has it displayed on a shelf in his livingroom and reads it to his grandchildren when they visit. I repeat: you just cannot go wrong with Cowboy Small. It has a simple but great story, nice pictures, and is a whole lot of fun. So glad it is available for today's children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful first story book
My 2-year old son and I just checked "Cowboy Small" out of the library. Couldn't believe my luck in finding this book! This is the first story book that's held my son's interest past the first few pages and all the way to the end and back again, and I mean backwards through every page.Read more

What a clever, fun, and unexpected gem of a story. You could not ask for a better blend of humor and storyline to keep a child riveted and laughing all at the same time.I am so happy we got this one and hope John Frank will write some more! The illustrations are marvelous and augment the story beautifully.

Dense with rich narrative language, crackling dialogue, stunning art and sidesplitting humor, this enormously entertaining western stands apart from the rest of the herd. The text is longer than that of most picture books, but it's all muscle and no fat; there's nary a wasted word. Many of the students in my undergraduate children's-literature course are headed for a career in elementary education, and all of them ought to include this title in their future classroom libraries. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best cowboy book ever!!!!!!!!!
I like this book on Cowboy (Eyewitness Books) & I think it's a cool book & in this book you can see why what an athentic chuckwagon looks like, how an expert ropes a calf, a rodeo rider in action on a wild steer, how a saddle is made & a Mongolian lassoing a wild horse.5-0 out of 5 stars Yee-haw for your eyes
DK eyewitness books are some of the greatest non-fiction books around. The distinctive white background and high-quality photography gives this book an edge over any other cowboy picture book. And -- these pictures are real! They're beautiful photos of historically cowboy/cowgirl things, accompanied by informative captions and text. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for yourself and the kids.
This is an exciting book to read and enjoy with your kids.My son and I read this book and looked at the wonderful pictures. It was a great afternoon of fun to see the imagination of my son growing along with the imagination of the little cowboy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Imagination
I have the 1959 first edition, and it has seen better days. It was read nearly every day and now my children love it too! It is 19 pages and a joy to read. All about a little boy that pretends he's a cowboy. Just a sweet story by a beloved author and illustrator.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do Things Always Get Better With Age?
Brave Cowboy is one of my childhood favorites (along with Cowboy And His Friend and Cowboy's Secret Life).I have vivid memories of Mom reading me the books and my fascination with the pictures.I received my copy of Brave Cowboy for Christmas in 1961 (I was 2 1/2) and I'm sure my own vivid imagination as a child is part of what made this book about a young boy's imagination resonate with my younger self. The other day Mom asked me if I still had my old copies (a friend wanted to give them to her grandchildren or something to that effect), so I got them out to reread them. The pictures held the same fascination for me now that they did so long ago (and made me wonder if part of my love of Peter Parnall's illustrations had its origin in these simple drawings rendered in two colors), but some elements of the story bothered me.I know the book is a product of the period it was written during (a young child of the time probably knew a lot of what they knew from watching TV and movie Westerns), but the portrayal of the Native Americans in the story bugged my 42 year old self. And Brave Cowboy seems a little flagrant with that toy gun.I am NOT prone to heavy bouts of political correctness.I think it was flawed back in 1959 when it was written. But the pictures in the book are so cool!I think any adult buying this book for a child now should be prepared to deal with these elements. And hope that the other books come back into print since they do not suffer the same problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!
I can't believe I found it! This was one of my favorite books from when I was in kindergarten. I remember it well. I'm buying it for my 6-year-old daughter tonight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calico to the Rescue.....
"Way out west in Cactus County there was a horse named Calico. She wasn't very pretty...but she was very smart. She was the smartest fastest horse in all of Cactus County." She could run like "greased lightning", and she could smell like a bloodhound."Her nose was so keen she could track a bee through a blizzard."She was owned by a cowboy named Hank, and "...she would go to the end of the trail for Hank. They had a language all their own and understood each other perfectly."Life was good and happy for everyone who lived in Cactus County, no locks, no fences, and no sheriff or jail. But across the Cactus River were the Badlands where the villains of this story lived. And the meanest, sneakiest, absolutely worst bad man of them all was Stewy Stinker. He was so mean, "he would hold up Santa Claus on Christmas Eve if he had a chance."So sit back and get comfortable and see what happened when Stewy Stinker and his nasty gang came to town.....First published in 1941, Calico The Wonder Horse is as fresh and entertaining today, as it was over fifty years ago. This is an old fashioned, action packed, rootin' tootin' western that has it all...cattle rustling, hold-ups, a stampede and kidnapping, a wild and thrilling stagecoach chase, and through it all, Calico comes to the rescue, outsmarts the bad guys and saves the day.Virginia Lee Burton's clever, witty text is dramatic, engaging and full of wild west colloquialisms that will have both kids and adults laughing and cheering at all the fun.Her marvelous comic strip illustrations are expressive and full of detail and beg to be pored over and explored.Put it all together and you have the makings of a timeless classic to share with friends, family and future generations.Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Calico The Wonder Horse is a masterpiece and a MUST for every home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Could Not LOVE This One???
The illustrations of this Wild West comedy saga are just as good as the lively and creative prose.Easy to read in one sitting as a great "before bed" story. The adventure and humor will keep even those with short attention spans listening intently. The ending is perfect! ... Read more

The spirit of the West rides again in tribute to cowboys & cowgirls. The horses are saddled, the dogs are barking & it's time to hit the trail for one more cattle drive - a charming roundup of A to Z at home on the range. I enjoyed the poetry & the large, lovely watercolor pictures of this one! For my full review please see [my website]

We just borrowed this unique book from our local library. The watercolor illustrations in it are especially beautiful, depicting real cowboys at work. The text is well thought out as well, introducing some neat wordssuch as farrier, jinglebobs, oilcloth, and quirt. The lore of the Old Westhas eroded to the tacky in many cases, but this is a book that is artfullyand tastefully done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book.
This book is such fun. We have read is so much that my two year old now recites it from memory. I get a kick out of it every time. For some reason it just sings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific early reader book!
What a fun book. The rhymes catch you up and the graphics are very appealing. My kindergartner loves to practice her reading with it.Completely worth the money spent, particularly if you have an early reader or a toddler that just likes cows, cowboys, and cowgirls.Very sweet book.
