Editorial Review

Oh, give her a home where the buffalo roam... In this playful ode to theWild West, a small girl would gladly exchange her big city life for big skycountry. Her three-piece-suited daddy seems bemused by her longings, patientlytrying to reclaim his converted hat and the white shag rug (with a suspiciouschaps-shaped hole cut out of it). But "I don't want to be a girly girl / Wholikes to sit and chat. / I just want to be a cowgirl, Daddy, / What's so wrongwith that?"Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Saddle Up!
A young girl relays to her father her dream of being a cowgirl in the Wild West rather than a good girl, a nice girl, or a school girl who reads or plays nicely indoors. Whimsical watercolor and ink illustrations bring the rhyming text to life by turning a shaggy rug into a pair of chaps, Daddy's fedora into a cowboy hat and a stray dog into a piebald mare. Lazy clouds drift in and out of shapes - cattle, cowboy hats, cacti and covered wagons - to illustrate the girl's imagination. The city-country contrast is deftly played out in subtle details like skyscrapers shaped like cacti and a junk heap that takes the form of a heard of cattle. An excellent read for imaginative children, especially girls, everywhere. Ages 4-8.

5-0 out of 5 stars memories
This book brings back memories of my own childhood. I love to read it to children. It is full of imagination and fun. I also recommend 10,000 White Horses by Betsy Lee which you can get at Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Fence Me In.....
As our young narrator tells us in no uncertain terms, she's not interested in being a good girl, or a girly girl, sitting around with friends chatting, having tea parties, and playing with dolls. That's not her idea of fun.She definitely doesn't want to have her head in a book, or cook, clean, and sew.And as for high-rise living in the big city, well this young lady yearns to live on the prairie, breaking broncos, driving cattle, twirling her lasso, and sleeping under the stars. And that's just what she plans to do."I've got my shiny spurs and boots,/I've got my cowgirl hat-/I'm leaving for the Wild, Wild West./Now what's so wrong with that?"Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross have authored an imaginative and humorous ode to the wild, wild west, with a very satisfying, feel-good ending, that's sure to become a read aloud favorite at your house.Ms Willis' rhyming text is entertaining and engaging, and begs to be read with a lilting western drawl.Mr Ross' charming and creative, cartoon-like artwork is rich in expressive, wild west images, and sharp eyed readers will enjoy poring over the illustrations and finding all the special and amusing details in each picture.Perfect for youngsters 3-7, I Want To Be A Cowgirl is a rootin' tootin' good time for little cowpokes with big dreams of their own. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The life of real cowboys
The title of Russell Freedman's book is self-explanatory -- "Cowboys Of The Wild West." Russell's focus is on the realities cowboys had to face between the late 1860s until the 1890s when the era of the open range roundups and long trail drives finally ended. He tells about the background of those cow herders on horseback, describing their clothes, equipment, and roundup work on the open range as well as on the trail drives from Texas to Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, or the Dakotas. Another chapter provides a look at ranch life while the last chapter briefly informs the reader about modern cowboy life.4-0 out of 5 stars It's Alright
This book is excellent if your trying to learn something! It tells you everything about the Wild West! But otherwise just for fun I don't think you're gonna like it!It's pretty boring! But I have to read it for a grade in 6th grade language arts class, and I'll tell I think I'm goin toget an A! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just perfect for the little cowpoke in your life!
I just read this book to my son at bedtime tonight and had to come make sure there were some good reviews out there.Since I found no reviews, I will just have to write one myself because people should know just how cute this book is.Each page spread asks a question about the life of a cowboy and the answer is written in a short, silly poem with pictures that correspond.Nothing the least bit questionable here for the little cowboys either--they drink root beer when they go to town and even brush their teeth with sagebrush every night before bed.Cute, cute, cute with adorable illustrations.Just the right length for my 2 year old.He enjoys looking at the pictures as I read. It's a book to grow on though because the pictures are pretty detailed and he'll get more jokes as he gets older.Nice cadence too.All around love it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting cowboy tale for girls
This book is wonderfully written and well researched (many of the locales are familiar to me as an Austin resident). It has all the elements of a great story -- adventure, danger, intrigue, romance -- while remaining realistic and wholesome. My 9-year-old daughter has already read it twice!

5-0 out of 5 stars A girl's diary of her adventures on the Chisholm Trail.
Fourteen-year-old Hallie Lou Wells is the daughter of a wealthy rancher in South Texas in 1878. At their mother's insistence, Hallie and her little sister are learning to be proper young ladies. But they are also learning how to run the ranch someday. When her father decides not to go on the annual cattle drive so that he can stay home with his pregnant wife, Hallie persuades him to let her go in his place, along with her servant and best friend, Dovey Mae. Along the trail, the two girls face the dangers of rattlesnakes, storms, river crossing, hostile Indians, outlaws, and illness. But Hallie becomes a braver, stronger person, and even experiences the joy of love. Told through the form of a diary kept by Hallie, this book was very similar to the Dear America series, and I would reccomend it to all fans of that series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Bedtime Story
The illustrations are wonderful and the verses are very catchy.Don't listen to the "recommended age" suggestions - I have been reading this to my son since he was 6 months old (he is now 1), and he loves it!Good for ALL ages!

4-0 out of 5 stars Adorable rhymes and wonderful illustrations.
My six year old and I both love Cowboy Bunnies. We have read this off and on since he was 3.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Sweet a Bedtime Story as You Will Find
Cowboy Bunnies is written in a gentle, rocking rhyme with musical accompaniment perfectly suited to the romanticized ideal many children have of western life. This song-story is one of the few I never tired of readingor hearing, even though I tape-recorded it to play four times in a row.Mydaughter learned about cowboy and cowgirl costumes, frontier life, cowboyslang, and musical instruments. The end of the story puts cowboy bunniesto bed as the music slows from gently romping to a sleepy lullaby.Iconsider this book a masterpiece for children ages 2 to 6. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great to read to kids, fun for adults too
After I heard about this book on NPR, I had to get it.It was just as good as promised. The story is heartwarming and humorous, taking the reader on a journey with two cowboys who lost their favorite cow.It is also wonderfully paced so that after a few readings, children can chime in to say the cowboys' favorite meal ("Guess what?" "Beans!").There is just enough text on each page so that children with short attention spans don't lose interest, and for children with longer attention spans, the beautiful and kid-friendly illustrations contain many fun details to discuss as you are reading. It's also typeset in big block letters that are easier to recognize for kids who are still learning the alphabet.

5-0 out of 5 stars a real cowboy's dream
My little 3-year old cowboy loves to read this book before bedtime. It's lulling, rhythmic text is a wonderful "wind-down" book before turning in.It has helped to perpetuate his cowboy dream and has taught him about different wildlife present in the desert or on the "range."He's even nicknamed himself Cowpoke and his brother, Camp Cookie, after reading this so many times. It's one of our favorites!!Perfect for any boy or girl showing interested in the cowboy or cowgirl life!
