5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent adapation
I recently read the original story upon which this children's book is based and I would like to compliment the author on an excellent adaption.I also write about the Old West and one of my own goals is to introduce children to that period of history.I hope I can make the stories as interesting as Marc Simmons did in his book.
5-0 out of 5 stars young cowboy takes part in a catttle drive
Teddy Abbott was a real person from England who settled in Nebraska in the 1870s and raised cattle which had to be driven to market. Simmons tale of a son of his also named Teddy taking part in a cattle drive is imaginary. But it portrays all of the aspects of a real cattle drive from types of individuals involved in one through a day's activities and potential dangers during it. All the men, including Teddy, have different responsibilities. Teddy's responsibility along with another cowboy is taking care of the "remuda," "a Spanish used used in Texas for a herd of spare horses," as the book's glossary notes. Because of an accident to his partner, Teddy ends up watching over the remuda on is own. The potential danger of a stampede comes to pass with a lightening strike frightening the herd of cattle; which sets the horses of the remuda to running off as well. But Teddy stays with them and brings all the spare horses back to the drive. After the drive, Teddy is given a pair of spurs in a simple ceremony attended by all of the cowboys he had worked with. Not only a story of a rite of passage for a young boy, Simmons' story is notable for its specifics on a cattle drive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun and inventive book of cowboy poetry
With Julie Danneberg's writing, and Margot Apple's illustrations, Cowboy Slim is a fun and inventive book of cowboy poetry. Page after page, children will laugh wildly as Cowboy Slim rhymes and jokes about the good ol' west and all of the excursions he embarks upon with his dogies and horse. Danneburg's story is the perfect companion to the pictures which Apple breathes life into the story with. Equipped with a glossary of Buckaroo Banter, Cowboy Slim is a delightful recommendation for all children, especially those just beginning to read.

Spunky Annie Halfpint is not your average hero, but she will capture your heart (and an avalanche!).The author's creative language in this book immediately drew me into Annie's story. "Her voice booms soft as thunder. Her hair grows thick as ink.Her skin feels smooth as gravel. Her mukluks hold their stink." The beautiful watercolor illustrations are the perfect compliment to this legendary adventure.A fun ride - not to be missed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet
This book is the seventh in a series based on the Woody's Roundup gang (Woody, Jessie and the Prospector) from Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 2. In this book, when Jessie's Aunt Grace sends word that she is coming out from Snootyville, New York for a visit, the Prospector decides that Jessie needs to "fancy" up to impress her. Unfortunately for Jessie, curtsying and riding sidesaddle are just not something she knows a lot about...Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Paintings!
Joy Cowley's text eloquently tells the story of real-life hero Dayton Hyde and his rescue of the American Mustang. However, it's the illustrations which raise this book to a work of art. Where Horses Run Free includes page after page of simply stunning paintings which transcend the average picture book, giving us a rich and rewarding experience. And it's been said before, but it bears repeating - Layne Johnson is one of today's best illustrators. Where Horses Run Free will be enjoyed on many levels by a wide range of readers - from elementary school children to adults who love horses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book!
My sister gave us this book for Christmas after her two young girls went crazy over it.Now my son is hooked! He squirms and wiggles during almost every other book but sits perfectly still for Cowboy Baby.I'd definitely recommend it to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every night for the past two weeks...
Every night. And before every nap. Yeah, I'm starting to get sick of it, but not my 2 year old...he still requests it.The only negative is that my 7 year old heard the Kid Rock song "Cowboy" on the radio (I'm gonna be a cowboy, baby) and wonders if Kid Rock has read this book. I think I'm going to have to switch radio stations, at least while the kids are in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars Walker's Crossing
Walker's Crossing was The best book I have Ever read. Usually when I read a book, I get bored and I don't finish the book. When I read Walker's Crossing, I read the book. I was very interested in the book. I used to want to be a cowboy when I was younger. When Lon Walker got hurt,I thought it was cool that Gil Walker and Ryan Walker helped out on the Ranch. If I was a girl, I would want to be a Junior Rodeo Queen too.Charlene never gave up.I learned alot about what cowboys really do on a Ranch.I urge everyone in the world to read Walker's Crossing. It's a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction
"Walker's Crossing" is an excellent example of historical fiction as it brings to life the prejudicial views of the Ku Klux Klan and shows how prejudice affects a community.Ryan Walker is a seventh grade boy who lives on a ranch in rural Wyoming. All Ryan wants is to be a cowboy for Saddlebow Ranch, where his father is the foreman.Ryan's good-for-nothing 22-year old brother, Gil, becomes involved with the Mountain Patriots Association, a group formed to drive out all "minorities" from the area.Read more

This book is the nineth in a series based on the Woody's Roundup gang (Woody, Jessie and the Prospector) from Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 2. In this book, it's Christmas time for the Roundup gang. The Prospector has a gold nugget that he would like nice bag for, Woody has his wonderful hat, and Jessie has her bright new cowgirl boots. Each would like to get the other what he or she really wants, but lacks the funds. Where can they get money quick? This is a story of unselfish giving.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart and mind of a true-blue cowboy . . .
This wonderful collection of autobiographical essays and short fiction (not always easy to tell apart) will please any real-cowboy fan, and certainly any Will James fan. In his easy-going cowboy-talk vernacular, James tells it like it is (or in many cases, was), patiently explaining the ins and outs of cowboy life while giving the good parts a bit of a romantic glow and all the rest his dry, even-tempered humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maynard "Fish" Rawlings, Jr.:A Lone Star Hero
In the character of Fish Rawlings, Dearen seems to have combined the youthful exuberance of Samuel Clemens' Huckleberry Finn with the adventurous independence of Rowdy Yates (a young Clint Eastwood) from the old popular television series "Rawhide." . . . For today's young readers who did not grow up with those television western series that starred young men like "Wagon Train's" Barnaby West, "Rawhide's" Rowdy Yates, and "The High Chapparal's" Blue Cannon, the Lone Star Heroes Series helps fill the gap. -- REVIEW OF TEXAS BOOKS, SUMMER 2002.

It is 1868, and eleven-year-old Fish Rawlings and his cousin Gid are saddling up to go on a cattle drive as far as the Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos River. There Fish will set up a grave stone for his father who was killed on a previous cattle drive.A book for young readers [ages 8-13] that confronts the issue of death.Highly recommended.

I liked all three very much. I liked the third book, The Hidden Treasure of Chisos the most and I liked the second book, On the Pecos Trail and the first book, Comanche Peace Pipe the same. The only thing that I did not like about the whole series was the author said too much about Fish's father dying in On the Pecos Trail. But that is actually good because kids need to learn to cope when their parents get divorced or when one or both of their parents dies ... Read more
