5-0 out of 5 stars My kid's love "Little House" books
I have 5 childern and do not get to read aloud the quanity of books I would like to, so we invest in audio. They can be enjoyed time and time again. My kids play the "Laura" books we own over and over. Great for long car trips or when layed up with illness too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story conitnues...
Little House On The Prairie is a longer read than Little House In The Big Woods and deals more with action and adventture. While the first book seemed to be a guide book on survival in the wild this book is more of a tale with Indians, bush fires and other dangers.Living on the prairie is not the same as living in the big woods, so we do learn some new things about prioneer life and the problems the family faced. In same ways the second book is superior to the first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustration of Life on the Frontier
After the Civil War, the Wilder family has decided to make a big move - join the migration to the frontier, from the little cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. The main character and author, Laura, tells about the difficulties and advantages of life on the praire. Even though the journey there is difficult, and, at time, tragic, the family is able to pull through, and arive in the praire of Kansas to make their new life and create their new adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome read
I am reading this with my 7 yr old and 4 yr old and we love the stories. It is warm fuzzy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Did I Wait So Long?
I'd watched the television series over the years and thought I'd like to read the books, although I was kind of embarassed to tell anyone because they were considered to be written for children or adolescents.
5-0 out of 5 stars an avid re-reader of the series
I've read these books since I was a little girl up to the present (46 y/o), and continue to do so.They are my very favorite books, I just ordered another set having read them so much over the years that my second set finally started falling apart.Anytime I get depressed with the world around me, with the behavior of people, (no one seems to have manners anymore, the willingness to work hard for and take care of their families, etc.), I read these books.I also learned a lot about pioneering days, how people cooked, built houses, made clothes, cleaned, washed, etc, etc, etc.Children who were able to go to school ( and some who couldn't) were expected to learn and in most cases did, and from the results of a sample questionaire that was on the internet some time ago knew a lot more than the average kid today.I can't begin to explain the benefits of reading these books to anyone no matter what age.I adore Laura, and plan to hopefully go the the Laura Ingalls Wilder house and museum in Mansfield, Mo. soon, as well as DeSmet, SD.I want to see the things she always talked of, such as Pa's fiddle. These books should be required reading in schools.I never much liked the series on TV however, they made up a lot of situations that were not believeable, and in general just didn't follow the books much.On the other hand, I'm glad someone did decide to do the series, it keeps Laura and her family alive in a lot of people's minds that haven't read the books. But, I can't say it enough, the books are much much better, READ THEM!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Entertainment
This collection of "Little House and the Prarie" episodes from the first season has brought back many happy childhood memories for me. Its like stepping back to atime when old fashioned values were appreciated.I am thrilled to be able to share this quality enterainment with my young children.Every episode teaches a lesson in kindness, love and understanding. The locations are so beautiful and and life so simple then.My four year old loves it now, especially the episodes where Nelly Olsen gets whats coming to her!If you're worried aboutmodern televisions negative influence in your childs behavior take control, go out and buy this. You will be very glad you did

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illlustrations and Colors but...
in this set, which I gave to my daughter for Christmas, when she unwrapped it, the box was broken on two edges. We are reading book #3 and the pages have begun falling out.The quality of the set is the problem. The stories are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic, yet still exceedingly timely, collection
I do not remember the first time I real all the Laura books. They have, however, been on my list of comfort reading ever since. Was it because it was so easy to identify with her sibling rivalry in the first couple books, or because of the vivid descriptions that brought life in America over 100 years ago into my imagination, or because the chapters, so good for bedtime reading, encapsulated each vignette into a cohesive whole? It's hard to say exactly what it was about these stories, but Mrs. Wilder's voice creates a window into our country's past that no child should miss out upon.Where else would they find such a narrator of pioneer western America?Let alone one that is so easy to identify with. This collection is beautifully colored (the illustrations have always been wonderfully evocative) and the pages are a tad thicker than normal and shiny and feel good in the hand. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Need to cut out
I'm not sure why the description says "easy to remove" clothes, because I had to cut everything except the dolls out.Maybe they meant easy to remove from the dolls, or maybe I just got a bad lot!But I had no idea I was going to have to cut everything out in order to use it!My hand is hurting! It's a cute set but also a little flimsy (while punching out the dolls a couple of them tore on the tabs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun
I gave this to my granddaughter on her 5th birthday. Her mother had already been reading her the primary Little House books. She was a big fan of them so she was thrilled to get the paper dolls so she could act out some of the stories she had been hearing.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Awesome Book
The Author is very dicriptive and enter alot of excitnent into this book. This Book Lets readers visualise pioneer life!
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT READ FOR ALL AGES
My wife and I have been reading these wonderful books for well over fifty years now and they have lost none of thier charm.Wilder's simple style and sincerity come through on every page. These books, this one included, are classified as children's literature, but I find that they appeal to the youth in all of us.I can hardly think of a better book, or set of books to get a child started reading. Not only are they exposed to some very good writing and story telling, but they also get a first hand account of one aspect of our countries history seen through the eyes of a little girl.I cannot recommend this book and Wilder's other books highly enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Rate on the prarie
On The Banks of Plum Creek, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, a five out of five star rating, and memorable classis cheriched by readers for genorations along with the whole series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little House on the Prairie - fun family reading time
I read this book to my two sons, 7, 9 and my husband, during long drives. We all loved it. Even though the main character is a girl, my boys were interested the entire time and identified with Laura. The descriptions are great and the characters are well-drawn. We're now reading These Happy Golden Years and my family is loving that, too. I recommend this book for a family to read together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents beware! (sort of)
This is a charming, entertaining, and educational story about what life was like among homesteaders in the Dakota territories in the 1880s.I mostly agree with the other positive reviews here. But there is a teaching moment in this book that should not be overlooked. The parents in this book are paragons of virtue, and their behavior matches the highest standards - standards of 1880, not 2006.There is a short scene during one of the "literaries" where several men perform in blackface.Although it occurs with innocent intent, modern readers might find it in questionable taste if they don't allow for the historical context.
5-0 out of 5 stars CDs add a great touch
It's wonderful to see how my children love listening to these books over and over, now that we've been collecting the CDs. The little details really stick in their heads, and have been surprisingly useful tidbits of information on several occasions, as they hear or read other things that relate!

5-0 out of 5 stars your boys will love girls books after this one gets them hooked on Laura
I have this book to thank for discovering the "Laura series", which somehow, I'd missed in childhood.I read this book aloud to my son, then 9, and he became so interested in pioneer life, that he devoured every other Laura book, either with me reading to him, (or, when he often couldn't wait till our next time together to find out what happened next) his reading it alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Different to the LIttle house books, a diary of an adult
I can see why Laura Ingalls was able to write such good books about her early life on the Prairie. Her diaries were packed full of information and detail which she could later draw on. This is one of her diaries, with notes and a setting by her only child, daughter Rose Wilder Lane who was just a girl during this trip.
4-0 out of 5 stars I like Historical Diaries But This One Is Especially Meaningful
It's often said in tones of this-is-true-but-it's-also-heresy that Rose Wilder Lane, daughter of Laura and Almanzo Wilder, is the real unsung heroine in the Little House books, because while she let her mother have credit for the famous series, it was Rose, via her careful, invisible editing and re-writes, that turned cheery memoirs into beloved classics. I suspect that's true, but in the case of this book, it is beyond all doubt what happened. Rose took her mother's raw diary and prepared it for publication, and the product is the book On The Way Home, which tells of the journey Rose and her parents made in 1894, from DeSmet, South Dakota, setting for the final half of the Little House books, to the Ozark country, where the family would spend the next sixty years. The description is unsentimental, not glamorized (as it tends to be--for the sake of betterment--in the other books) and it paints a portrait of the difficult traveler's life on the by-then crowded prairie overrun with east-central European immigrants, many of whom being exactly the type portrayed in novels such as My Antonia. The Wilder family completes its draining re-location by covered wagon and arrives in Missouri, a state so much a promised land to them that a reader cannot help but share their relief when they safely arrive.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Little Different
This book is written in a much different style than the other Little House books.Laura kept a journal of the trip and these are her day-to-day entries. It can sometimes be dry or confusing.I have been reading the series with my daughter and this one has been a little more difficult. We enjoyed it, but not as much as the others. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "The rich man gets his ice in summer; the poor man gets his in winter."
"The First Four Years" describes Laura and Almanzo Wilder's wedding and early years on a Dakota farm in the 1880s.Laura first tells Almanzo that she will never marry a farmer because the life is so hard and offers little financial security, so he makes a deal with her:They will try farming for three years and if it doesn't work out, he'll get a job in town. She agrees, and they begin their life together.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Last Four Years in Dakota
This is her diary account of their last years in Dakota Territory. It was a rough draft and was not completed for publication during Laura's lifetime. There is a difference in tone from earlier books; there is more reality. The Wilder farm in Mansfield Missouri is now on exhibit.
4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Different
I really agree with the other reviews. This book is different from the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars ON THE BANKS OF PLUM CREEK
IT IS VERY GOOD. I LIKED IT BECAUSE THEY SURVIVE OFF ALMOST NOTHING. THEY TRAP AND KILL THEIR MEAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
The adventures of Laura Ingalls and her family continue as they move from their house by Plum Creek to the wilderness of the unsettled Dakota Territory. Aunt Docia visits the family to offer Pa a job working for the Chicago and North Western Railroad who are laying tracks throughout South Dakota. Grasshoppers destroyed all their crops and hunting was scarce. Also the family had been stricken with scarlet fever, and also caused Laura's sister, Mary, to go blind. Mary does not complain about being blind and she is very brave. Many times Laura tells her details about their new life out in the wilderness and on the train rides. The Ingalls's bulldog Jack died of old age. He was a great companion to the family and is terribly missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Introduction to the Little House Series...
Adapted deftly from the Little House series made famous by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this gorgeous picture book tells of Laura's first day trip with her family from the Big Woods to the nearby town of Pepin Wisconsin. The writing is charming and warm, the typeface perfect for reading aloud or independently. The illustrations, inspired by Garth Williams' originals, are extraordinary...absolutely beautiful! I would not consider this adaptation to be a "dumbed down" version of the originals, nor it is too juvenile for older readers. Rather it is a perfect transition piece which lends itself to wonderful cuddling and conversation, both of which are important for developing strong readers no matter how old they may be.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal History of the Frontier
These eight books were written when Laura Ingalls Wilder was in her late 60s. They are reminiscences of her early years when living on the western frontier of America in the post-Civil War era. While a smell can stimulate memory, many pages are written about the cooking and foods that they had. Laura also describes the intricacies of female dress of that time. Hoop skirts were probably killed off by the bicycle craze of the late 1880s, they even hindered getting into a buggy. The outlook also changes as she ages from a child to teenager to woman.

I read these books when I was in the fifth grade.I thought they were a good read because of what the family went through.Reading about Laura I. Wilder's life in the west and the constant moving from one area to another due to crop failure, weather conditions, and beginning anew. Each story details how the family survives, Laura's childhood, and her relationship to her family.I even saw the Little House on the Prairie series with Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon.I didn't care if anyone thought my choice of reading subject. It was a good series and the books were just as good to read as well. It's good to read about someone and what they had to go through before there was even technology.Parents should place more emphasis on reading materials like this so that children understand and appreciate the value of family and respect of elders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Never to late to enjoy these great books.
This one will be short and sweet.I just completed reading all five of the boxed set.I feel I knew the Ingalls family as I shared their lives, dangers, joys, and challenges. But, why, oh why, did I wait over fifty years to discover these wonderful stories.Laura waited until she was 65 years old to start writing them, so I think it safe to say that 65(my age) is not too late for me to read them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Laura
I love all the little house books.I am buying these so I can read them again and also to build up a library for my grandchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much More Than a Collection of Letters
In addition to Laura's detailed letters to Almanzo describing her adventure, this book includes over thirty photographs featuring Laura, Rose, the Pacific Ocean (ships, beachgoers, etc.), San Francisco, and many scenes of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition including an air show and night-lit festivities.Though in black and white, this pictorial insight into what was behind the letters is wonderful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This is a very sweet and interesting book. Laura is visiting Rose in San Francisco for a few months and writes letters to Manly to fill him in on all she is doing and seeing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Daughter's Favorite
This was my daughter's favorite book from the time she was about 3-8 years old.I bought it as a introduction to the original Little House books and continued to collect the entire set of these "First Books".Bright, cheery with excellent artwork showing strong family relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Fashioned Winter
"Winter Days" is one of my favorite books in the "My First Little House Books" series, and one of my favorite books about autumn. The Ingalls family prepares for winter with time for the harvest and food storage. Mary and Laura participate in daily chores and entertain themselves with their rag dolls, paper dolls, and by using a thimble to draw on the frosted window. Beautiful illustrations bring Laura's log cabin world to life, and are an excellent starting point for discussing how life is different then it used to be, and how some things never change.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to "Little House"!
My almost-four-year old insisted I read it three times in a row the first time we read it! It is a well-written abridged version that manages to retain a feel of the original. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A very cold book
This book makes me shiver everytime we read it.It kept blizzarding and nothing ever happened much, except for they thought the train was going to come and then it blizzarded again, so it couldn't.The coldness was described well, though, and I liked the part where the Indian was right. If you want to cool off on a hot summer day, I highly suggest reading this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many, many, and many more...
The winter in De Smet never ends. There is storm after storm after storm shutting down and paralyzing the community.Find out how the Ingalls, and how all of the other families deal with the devastating realities of the winter that lies ahead of them. They had a wise folk tell them about the winter. If you would like to read more about the adventures and advertisities that these poor people had to go through, read and discover the scenarious for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me thankful for Southern winters!
What can I say? As with all of Mrs. Wilder's books, this one was great! It really made me thankful for everything we have today--and we can thank the pioneers for making the way to have everything that we have today. During this exceptionally hard winter, it was an everyday struggle just to stay alive. The 2 main goals every single day were food and heat. Both were all-day-consuming projects. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story, or enjoys "living" in another time and place through books. It's great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good for early readers
I am currently reading the original Little House on the Praire to my son and he was so excited to discover that there were versions of the story he could read himself!Going West is based on the first chapter of Little House on the Prairie (each of the "my first" books is based on a specific chapter from either Little House on the Prairie, Little House in the Big Woods or Farmer Boy).My son was delighted to recognize details from the original story in "his" version. The events, and sometimes the exact text itself, come directly from the bigger books. These books made good easy readers for my son because the story was familiar and the illustrations provide many details. They were perfect for my son who isn't quite ready for chapter books, but wants to read an interesting story. Now he wants to collect the whole set!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Going West
I like this book Going West.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for young children and their LH-fan moms!
This beautifully illustrated book nicely sums up "Little House in the Big Woods."The drawings are faithful in spirit to Garth Williams' originals, as the text is to Wilder's writing. For example, one page readssomething like, one winter's night Pa told Ma he was taking the family outwest.Definitely not PC for a husband to tell a wife what to do, butthat's what Wilder wrote and that's what the author summarizes.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable introduction to the real thing
I have to laugh at those reviewers who seem so offended by these books!Have you actually read the originals?!These books simply take small exerpts from the originals and simplify them for a younger audience.I too absolutely loved the original books and still do.But I'm not going to be able to read them to my 3 year old without her losing interest. Therefore, I share these shorter versions with her and she loves them. When she's older (the originals are recommended for 8-12 year olds) I'll give her the originals. In the meantime these are fabulous and I very much doubt Laura Ingalls Wilder would take offense to them.Seriously, calm down!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I really like it!
My favorite character is Laura. These are all great books.I have read almost all of them.I just need one more.I really REALLY like the books.
4-0 out of 5 stars A dear story with delicious pictures for young and old alike!
The whole entire "My First Little House Books" series is a wonderful way to introduce little ones to the Little House series! The pictures are absolute feasts for little and big eyes alike!
