Editorial Review

An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine work of literature that can stand alongside any in English
I just reread it recently as an adult. I had this boxed set of three hardcover E.B. White books when I was a kid - Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan (which I remember as my favorite of the three, though I hardly remember it today), and Stuart Little.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte's Web
I've purchased this book for my daughter who is almost 9 years old, I end up reading it before her. This book is great for growing up kids; how wonderful and variable it is to have a friend he/she can depend on and be with to share fun, sad and so so stories to one another.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, and for a good reason
This book, though it may seem to be just a cute story about a pig, is actually quite sad.The first time I read this book I was in first grade and I liked it, but it was only when I just recently read it again that I realized how good it really is. This book, through its simple plot, reminded me a lot about how selfless some people are and also about growing up.No wonder it's a classic; even though it's written for little kids, it can remind a lot of people about their own lives and bring back a lot of fond memories. ... Editorial Review

One night, the sounds of New York City--the rumbling of subway trains, thrumming of automobile tires, hooting of horns, howling of brakes, and the babbling of voices--is interrupted by a sound that even Tucker Mouse, a jaded inhabitant of Times Square, has never heard before. Mario, the son of Mama and Papa Bellini, proprietors of the subway-station newsstand, had only heard the sound once. What was this new, strangely musical chirping? None other than the mellifluous leg-rubbing of the somewhat disoriented Chester Cricket from Connecticut. Attracted by the irresistible smell of liverwurst, Chester had foolishly jumped into the picnic basket of some unsuspecting New Yorkers on a junket to the country. Despite the insect's wurst intentions, he ends up in a pile of dirt in Times Square.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Falls Short of Wind in the Willows
When I read Wind in the Willows, I thought no other book could match its calm, slow, elegant pace, but this book does. However, I didn't find it measuring up to Wind in the Willows as far as a literary work goes. Why not? They're both written very eloquently (although I did think Wind in the Willows had some unnecessarily advanced vocabulary) and they both had outstanding and lovable characters. What's A Cricket in Times Square missing?I looked at all of the reviews here, and couldn't figure out why I didn't want to give A Cricket in Times Square any more than three stars. Then it hit me.Location!Lack of location to be exact.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kid's love "Little House" books
I have 5 childern and do not get to read aloud the quanity of books I would like to, so we invest in audio. They can be enjoyed time and time again. My kids play the "Laura" books we own over and over. Great for long car trips or when layed up with illness too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story conitnues...
Little House On The Prairie is a longer read than Little House In The Big Woods and deals more with action and adventture. While the first book seemed to be a guide book on survival in the wild this book is more of a tale with Indians, bush fires and other dangers.Living on the prairie is not the same as living in the big woods, so we do learn some new things about prioneer life and the problems the family faced. In same ways the second book is superior to the first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustration of Life on the Frontier
After the Civil War, the Wilder family has decided to make a big move - join the migration to the frontier, from the little cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. The main character and author, Laura, tells about the difficulties and advantages of life on the praire. Even though the journey there is difficult, and, at time, tragic, the family is able to pull through, and arive in the praire of Kansas to make their new life and create their new adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome read
I am reading this with my 7 yr old and 4 yr old and we love the stories. It is warm fuzzy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Did I Wait So Long?
I'd watched the television series over the years and thought I'd like to read the books, although I was kind of embarassed to tell anyone because they were considered to be written for children or adolescents.
5-0 out of 5 stars an avid re-reader of the series
I've read these books since I was a little girl up to the present (46 y/o), and continue to do so.They are my very favorite books, I just ordered another set having read them so much over the years that my second set finally started falling apart.Anytime I get depressed with the world around me, with the behavior of people, (no one seems to have manners anymore, the willingness to work hard for and take care of their families, etc.), I read these books.I also learned a lot about pioneering days, how people cooked, built houses, made clothes, cleaned, washed, etc, etc, etc.Children who were able to go to school ( and some who couldn't) were expected to learn and in most cases did, and from the results of a sample questionaire that was on the internet some time ago knew a lot more than the average kid today.I can't begin to explain the benefits of reading these books to anyone no matter what age.I adore Laura, and plan to hopefully go the the Laura Ingalls Wilder house and museum in Mansfield, Mo. soon, as well as DeSmet, SD.I want to see the things she always talked of, such as Pa's fiddle. These books should be required reading in schools.I never much liked the series on TV however, they made up a lot of situations that were not believeable, and in general just didn't follow the books much.On the other hand, I'm glad someone did decide to do the series, it keeps Laura and her family alive in a lot of people's minds that haven't read the books. But, I can't say it enough, the books are much much better, READ THEM!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Rocky Tale
Armand is a hobo and hates children. One day, he arrives back under the bridge (his home) only to find kids and their mother. He becomes attached to them and gives them life experiences but can he give them there Christmas wish?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Book Ever By Immanuel GutierrezCCMS
I thought this book was great.Right from the start A gypsy tells Armand that he would have an adventure that day. That day he meet the Calcet family and his life was not the same.Even though he tried to guard his heart, the kids got through to him.It is a great book to read with your family because it offers hope and takes you though on an adventure through Paris, including Notre Dame Cathedral, and The Court of Miracles.Armand said "you should never give up hope," when the fisherman wound up the fishing pole and found the missing pair of his shoe.It it a great book for families that are homeless or having a hard time in life and for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming story
Natalie Savage Carlson perfectly illustrates what it means to be a family in this heartwarming book. The book is set in Paris in the early 1900's.It explores the world of hoboes and homeless people, a topic which children usually have little experience with.Armand is a homeless man who lives a solitary life under a bridge over the Seine River. He faithfully avoids children, calling them starlings, and saying they will steal your heart if you aren't careful. One day he arrives back home under the bridge, only to find a group of starlings sleeping in his spot.He tries his best to keep them out of his heart, but they work their way in and call Armand their grandpa. The importance of family is the main theme of this book.Armand finds a family and in the end couldn't be happier about it.

This collection of "Little House and the Prarie" episodes from the first season has brought back many happy childhood memories for me. Its like stepping back to atime when old fashioned values were appreciated.I am thrilled to be able to share this quality enterainment with my young children.Every episode teaches a lesson in kindness, love and understanding. The locations are so beautiful and and life so simple then.My four year old loves it now, especially the episodes where Nelly Olsen gets whats coming to her!If you're worried aboutmodern televisions negative influence in your childs behavior take control, go out and buy this. You will be very glad you did

in this set, which I gave to my daughter for Christmas, when she unwrapped it, the box was broken on two edges. We are reading book #3 and the pages have begun falling out.The quality of the set is the problem. The stories are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic, yet still exceedingly timely, collection
I do not remember the first time I real all the Laura books. They have, however, been on my list of comfort reading ever since. Was it because it was so easy to identify with her sibling rivalry in the first couple books, or because of the vivid descriptions that brought life in America over 100 years ago into my imagination, or because the chapters, so good for bedtime reading, encapsulated each vignette into a cohesive whole? It's hard to say exactly what it was about these stories, but Mrs. Wilder's voice creates a window into our country's past that no child should miss out upon.Where else would they find such a narrator of pioneer western America?Let alone one that is so easy to identify with. This collection is beautifully colored (the illustrations have always been wonderfully evocative) and the pages are a tad thicker than normal and shiny and feel good in the hand. ... Editorial Review

How terribly surprised the Little family must have been when their second child turned out to be a small mouse. Apparently familiar with the axiom that "when in New York City, anything can happen," the Littles accept young Stuart into their family unquestioningly--with the exception of Snowbell the cat who is unable to overcome his instinctive dislike for the little mouse. They build him a bed from a matchbox, and supply him with all of the accoutrements a young mouse could need. Mrs. Little even fashions him a suit, because baby clothes would obviously be unsuitable for such a sophisticated mouse. In return, Stuart helps his tall family with errant Ping-Pong balls that roll outside of their reach.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary johnson's review
I thought Stuart Little was a great book. Stuart is not a ordinary mouse, he is an adventerous mouse. The book was much better than the movie!

2-0 out of 5 stars Strange ...
What a strange little book. Much is made of the fact that Stuart's parents - especially his mother - worries about him constantly, yet when he runs off to find his bird friend, he tells no one! And Stuart is obviously gay, not that there's anything wrong with that (I'm gay ... check out the illustration on page 31) He doesn't really want to date the girl, he's more interested in his canoe ...

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT For Five Year Olds
The fact that the hero of the story is a mouse does not make this a good book for young children. The language is difficult and the humor is rather understated, i.e. "The doctor was delighted with Stuart, and said that it was very unusual for an American family to have a mouse."At its heart, Stuart Little is a comedy of manners, and the fantasy takes a back seat to the witty dialogue and neat prose.Children will enjoy it at ten and love it in adulthood. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I love LH books but...
I love LH books and read them before there was a TV show- I remember how at age 10 I enjoyed reading about Laura and Mary in the Big woods and how facinating it was to read about playing in the attic among all the food and goods the family had in storage. Laura Ingalls Wilder was so decriptive about the foods and acitivities of her childhood that it made you hungry for what they were about to eat and you felt a part of what was going on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a cookbook
The Little House cookbook is more than a collection of recipes. It's full of historical food tidbits. Each recipe if prefaced with an exerpt from the Little House book where that food is mentioned. This feature lets you know you are recreating a dish that Laura described in her book.Since Ma did not write down her recipes, Barbara Walker had to do research to find similar recipes to those described in the Little House series. But because of the explainations regarding the new recipes, there is no suspicion of unauthentic foods. Plus, they taste great. The white bread is a family favorite. This is 100% recommended for Little House fans and those wanting to explore frontier foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 Stars and more really - wonderful cookbook and book
This is wonderful! It is for fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and also for those who are interested in historic cooking - from prairie and colonial days which have their basis in so many of the cultures which settled America in the early days, and adapted for use there

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT READ FOR ALL AGES
My wife and I have been reading these wonderful books for well over fifty years now and they have lost none of thier charm.Wilder's simple style and sincerity come through on every page. These books, this one included, are classified as children's literature, but I find that they appeal to the youth in all of us.I can hardly think of a better book, or set of books to get a child started reading. Not only are they exposed to some very good writing and story telling, but they also get a first hand account of one aspect of our countries history seen through the eyes of a little girl.I cannot recommend this book and Wilder's other books highly enough.

Editorial Review

It's bedtime for young Frances--an adorable and irrepressible little badger--and everyone is ready but her. At 7:00 p.m. Frances is wide awake and bursting with youthful excitement. She tries every delay tactic she can muster--from demanding extra hugs and kisses to volleying a series of urgent last-minute questions ("May I sleep with my teddy bear?" "May I have my door open?"). She's almost positive there are spiders, giants, and tigers in her room.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Introduces fear of the dark, procrastination methods and spanking, with nice pictures
Frances is a sweet character, but this book is more likely to terrify than calm your child. We haven't had to deal with fear of mysterious shapes in the dark yet with our 3-year-old, so I'm certainly not going to introduce the concept, or suggest that cracks are scary because things with lots of legs might come out of them. The book also shows bedtime procrastination as normal and quite effective (would you give your child an extra piece of cake for getting out of bed?) And yes, spanking is bad. If you have an older child who already has all these fears, you have my sympathy and perhaps this book would be appropriate.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good Frances book with some modifications
I adored the Frances books as a child and could not wait to read them to my own daughter, who, much like Frances, has an extremely active imagination. Not surprisingly, she has really responded to these books. Bedtime for Frances portrays a slightly younger Frances than, for example, A Birthday for Frances or A Baby Sister for Frances, because this book clearly takes place before Frances's little sister Gloria is born. (And the illustrations are by Garth Williams of Little House fame, not Lillian Hoban, who illustrates the later books.) For that reason, and because there is less text than is some of the later Frances books, this is a good "first" Frances book for the younger (age 3 or a bright older age 2) child. I was, however, troubled by the spanking reference. I do not believe in spanking and I do not want to expose my daughter, at age 32 months, to the idea that parents might strike a child. We have changed the reference to spanking to a reference to "time-out" (which we don't actually do with our daughter, but she knows what it is) and it works okay. The spanking threat aside, I actually think Mother and Father Badger's approach to Frances's claims of a tiger and a giant in her room are very sensible and kind. That is why I still recommend this book despite the reference to spanking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book despite spanking reference
I LOVE all the francis books and reccomend this book.

This is such a sweet little book!Probably not much past age 5, but the story has a bunny looking for a place to stay or a home of his own.He proceeds to ask everyone he meets if he can live with them and they all say no.However, when he meets a little white bunny, the bunny takes him in and they then live together. The last picture is just so sweet with the two bunnies snuggling together. The illustrations make you touch the page because the bunny looks so fuzzy! It is very much loved in our house and we highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars home for a bunny review
I read this book 20+ years ago to my two children and it was their favorite and most requested Little Golden book.It is such a sweet and well illustrated book.My only regret is that I didn't keep it over the years because I now had to go on asearch for another copy for my brand new grandchild. My new copy of "Home for a Bunny" will be extremely well used, I'm sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching & Memorable
My mother used to read this book to me when I was very small, and even twenty years later, I remember the story of the little bunny trying to find a home so vividly! This is such a sweet story, it ends happily, and it has beautiful illustrations as well.A wonderful exploration of the concept of "home."I'm looking forward to reading it to my own children one day. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars your boys will love girls books after this one gets them hooked on Laura
I have this book to thank for discovering the "Laura series", which somehow, I'd missed in childhood.I read this book aloud to my son, then 9, and he became so interested in pioneer life, that he devoured every other Laura book, either with me reading to him, (or, when he often couldn't wait till our next time together to find out what happened next) his reading it alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Down On The Farm
This book is about a boy growing up on a farm. His name is Almanzo or "Manzo" for short. He has two sisters(Eliza Jane & Alice)and a big brother (Royal). He also has a pair of yearling oxen (Star & Bright)! This book tells you a lot of interesting things, like how to plant potatoes, wheat, rye, and carrots. It also tells you what you can do with all the parts of a beef and how to shear sheep. It is very exciting and

3-0 out of 5 stars "The rich man gets his ice in summer; the poor man gets his in winter."
"The First Four Years" describes Laura and Almanzo Wilder's wedding and early years on a Dakota farm in the 1880s.Laura first tells Almanzo that she will never marry a farmer because the life is so hard and offers little financial security, so he makes a deal with her:They will try farming for three years and if it doesn't work out, he'll get a job in town. She agrees, and they begin their life together.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Last Four Years in Dakota
This is her diary account of their last years in Dakota Territory. It was a rough draft and was not completed for publication during Laura's lifetime. There is a difference in tone from earlier books; there is more reality. The Wilder farm in Mansfield Missouri is now on exhibit.
4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Different
I really agree with the other reviews. This book is different from the others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Little House Book
I didn't get into this book as quickly as the others, but it is still a great part of Laura Ingall's life!

5-0 out of 5 stars ON THE BANKS OF PLUM CREEK
IT IS VERY GOOD. I LIKED IT BECAUSE THEY SURVIVE OFF ALMOST NOTHING. THEY TRAP AND KILL THEIR MEAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
The adventures of Laura Ingalls and her family continue as they move from their house by Plum Creek to the wilderness of the unsettled Dakota Territory. Aunt Docia visits the family to offer Pa a job working for the Chicago and North Western Railroad who are laying tracks throughout South Dakota. Grasshoppers destroyed all their crops and hunting was scarce. Also the family had been stricken with scarlet fever, and also caused Laura's sister, Mary, to go blind. Mary does not complain about being blind and she is very brave. Many times Laura tells her details about their new life out in the wilderness and on the train rides. The Ingalls's bulldog Jack died of old age. He was a great companion to the family and is terribly missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great classic!
Although I did not read this book as a child, it is a wonderful classic and I see that many other parents loved it as children. It is a sweet story and my daughter loves reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Wait Till the Moon Is Full"
This book was one of my favorites as a child.I was delighted to find that it was available -- at bought four copies immediately to give to special children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful childhood memory to pass on
I have been looking for a copy of this book for years. While visiting my brother recently I discovered that he had the copy that we read over and over again when we were children. It's in poor shape, a testimony to the use it received. He wouldn't part with it, so I am so pleased to find it available again. I'm sure my 2-year old grandson will enjoy this sweet and gentle story as much as I did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal History of the Frontier
These eight books were written when Laura Ingalls Wilder was in her late 60s. They are reminiscences of her early years when living on the western frontier of America in the post-Civil War era. While a smell can stimulate memory, many pages are written about the cooking and foods that they had. Laura also describes the intricacies of female dress of that time. Hoop skirts were probably killed off by the bicycle craze of the late 1880s, they even hindered getting into a buggy. The outlook also changes as she ages from a child to teenager to woman.
4-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories
I read these books when I was in the fifth grade.I thought they were a good read because of what the family went through.Reading about Laura I. Wilder's life in the west and the constant moving from one area to another due to crop failure, weather conditions, and beginning anew. Each story details how the family survives, Laura's childhood, and her relationship to her family.I even saw the Little House on the Prairie series with Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon.I didn't care if anyone thought my choice of reading subject. It was a good series and the books were just as good to read as well. It's good to read about someone and what they had to go through before there was even technology.Parents should place more emphasis on reading materials like this so that children understand and appreciate the value of family and respect of elders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Never to late to enjoy these great books.
This one will be short and sweet.I just completed reading all five of the boxed set.I feel I knew the Ingalls family as I shared their lives, dangers, joys, and challenges. But, why, oh why, did I wait over fifty years to discover these wonderful stories.Laura waited until she was 65 years old to start writing them, so I think it safe to say that 65(my age) is not too late for me to read them.
