5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST pop-up book!!!!!!!!
5 stars is just not enough to rate this book. I'd give it 10 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sabuda--GENIUS !
After seeing a TV segment on Mr. Sabuda, I purchased this book, and there is only one word,..WOW !Well, maybe two words,..also GENIUS ! His work is just amazing, and more for adults because of the ability needed to appreciate.
5-0 out of 5 stars simply fabulous
my mom got me this book for christmas last year.now i don't collect pop-ups nor am i young enough to still be receiving such gifts, but i was thrilled when i saw what robert sabuda had done with one of my favorite books.it's amazing how meticulous and detailed each and every one of the illustrations is.he really brings to life what i remember reading dozens of times over.not only are is his work artistically impressive, it remains true to the original work.now whenever i have to buy a book for cousin or niece or nephew i buy them this book, so that they can remain as enthralled as i am. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Oz
I'm working my way through these books. They are charming little tales, perfect for bedtime stories or enjoying on a day off.The only disadvantage with this particular collection is that it is not a hardbound book. The pages are nearly as thin as those in a bible, but the binding is good.If you get this, I suggest getting a sturdy fabric cover or just wrapping it with a brown bag like when you were in school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Book
I received the book this morning. All the OZ books in one!A Marvelous idea.I got hooked on these books because of the books Wicked and Son of a Witch.I decided I had to read more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and interesting way to improve vocabulary
This book adds enjoyment to the desire of every one to have good vocabulary strength. More we proceed with story more words we add to our word pool.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful but requires some discipline
I got this book to see if my 9-year-old could use it but as it turned out, the book is more suitable for me than it is for her.It is a great way to build one's vocabulary (I am learning quite a few new words myself) but it does take some discipline, and is certainly a bit too advanced for my daughter. If Mark Philips could also include the pronunciation in the footnotes, that would be even better.
3-0 out of 5 stars Full of difficult words
This book has good words for first 100 pages, then later this book becomes tedious to read. Because each sentence has three to four tough words. This book is for people who have good command over English language. Also the words used in this book are hardly used in everyday english. Don't waste your money. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For many of us, the adventures of Dorothy in Oz will forever be associated not with Judy Garland singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" but with W. W. Denslow's exceedingly odd line drawings for the original editions of Baum's Oz series. The Viennese artist Lisbeth Zwerger, however, goes a long way toward providing a new and refreshed set of images for the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the humbug wizard. These illustrations are often cockeyed, with occasional realistic details thrown in, like a crow with a corncob in its beak in the first portrait of the Scarecrow. The characters have a poignance and oddity that escaped the makers of the Oz movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful "Wizard of Oz"
I was a reasonably big fan of the "Wizard of Oz" when I was a kid. I'd seen the Judy Garland film, the "Return to Oz" film, my parents had taken me to a theatre production, and there used to be a cartoon series about Dorothy and her friends that I quite liked. Here in Australia, though, you don't see an awful lot of the Wizard of Oz books, and I missed out on all that as a kid. I managed to find a copy just recently of the the original story, and I really liked it. It's really a shame I couldn't find it earlier.
5-0 out of 5 stars For Before or After "Wicked" (The Broadway Play)
The Wizard of Oz--Still a classic, though some of us may have escaped our youth without actually reading the book. The play "Wicked" whets one's appetite for the original story, and this little classic is well done...Quick and easy to read, good type face and good leading between the lines (something we didn't worry about in our youth). There may be other, better illustrated editions, but this one gets the job done and gets it done very nicely if you want to re-read or remember something we should remember from our youth--the book, not the movie!!Suggest reading it after seeing "Wicked"...That allows more creative license in the play, thus more enjoyment and capitivation with that story rather than continually comparing it to the original Oz.
5-0 out of 5 stars After All These Years
I have to admit, until this year I didn't care much for the Wizard of Oz. It was my wife's favorite movie (and she even has checks with Oz scenes onthem), but it never was "fantasy" enough for me. I had been an avid modern fantasy/sci-fi reader until this year when I started reading classics like the Hobbit, the Chronicles of Narnia, and ultimately I picked up the Wizard of Oz.

4-0 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS CLASSIC FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES
THE WIZARD OF OZ WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1900, YET STILL RETAINS ALL OF IT'S CHARM AND EXCITEMENT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. THE ADVENTURES OF DOROTHY AND HER FRIENDS ARE FILLED WITH MAGIC. THE BOOK IS SO MUCH DIFFERENT THEN THE MOVIE, AND MUCH MORE EXCITING. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LoVe ThIs BoOk!
I got this book when I was a little girl, about the age of 3 or 4, and every night my Mom would read each chapter too me. I loved this story, and I'm also a fan of the movie. I'm 13 now, and I still read the book sometime's (by myself, lol). I can't wait to show this book to my kids when I'm an adult! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Just follow the yellow brick road!
Dorothy, a little girl with no parents, lives on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. But one day, a cyclone comes to Kansas and takes Dorothy & her dog, Toto away from Kansas and dropes them in Oz. The only way she can get home is to find the wizard of Oz. And on her way there, she meets some friends with some wishes of the own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to read to your kids!
This is a version of the classic story, simplified for kids.(The written version is a little different from the movie.)Although it is simplified, the sentences are complex enough to stretch the minds of younger readers.Read more

This was only an OK product. The layout was good, but the stickers were flimsy. The product descriptionmade us think that the "reusable" stickers were more durable than they were. The 3-5 year olds that used it had fun with it, but not for long.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice gift!!
I was very happy with the quality of this item, and would recommend it to others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected but not bad
This is not a sticker book, it's a page of stickers and a background where you can place them and then remove and replace them.I bought this for a very young child and she seemed to like it but wasn't interested in moving the stickers after placing them the first time.Maybe a little older child would have more fun with this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Oz: A Collection
Don't be fooled by its display. It may look big, but actually it's a small book (about the size of a Ladybird's Oz edition) with over 350 pages of Oz, collecting pictures and writings from the 1900 to (possibly) today! Not only does it have the American/British/English Oz, but also pictures from the Italian, Russian (now we get to see a few samples from theRussian translation), Bengali, Hungarian, Japanese, Latvian, Polish, Portuguese, Rumanian and Uzbek versions from the 'Wizard' and later Oz books by Baum. Now that I have this book, I really want to find and get the Italian "Il Mago di Oz' (by Raviola) book, the Russian "the Wizard of the Emerald City" book with illustrations (by L. Vladimirskov) and the comic-book adaptation.Of course, there are also many pages that involve the MGM and Stage versions of the story, as well as a few not-well-known versions, like 'On Ice' and 'Under Sea Ballet'.This book usually takes a half or full chapter from Baum's Oz books (Little Wizard Stories, Emerald City, Lost Princess, etc.) and many quotes from what the characters/author said in the stories, and also shows you lots of things (toys/figurines, book editions, games, accessories, displays, etc) which came from the books/movie.You will also see some pictures (and a bit of writing) from "Denslow's Scarecrow and Tin-man" and new coloured-in versions of the black-and-white Oz pictures, and (maybe) some NEW never-before-seen writing on Oz.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not in Kansas Anymore!
This is a delightful book!As a big Oz fan when I was a child, it was great to see all the characters and stories I grew up with come alive again. There are segments from pretty much all the Baum authored books (not the ones by other authors after his death), and great quotes dealing with all kinds of subjects pertinent to children and adults alike, such as intelligence, courage, etc. As an adult, I really enjoyed reading the "Other Voices" segments, where various people comment on Oz and 'what it means'.My favorite entry is the television summary of the 1939 movie by the Marin Independent Journal (p 72): "Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first woman she meets, then teams up with three complete strangers to kill again."If that is not the ultimate in revisionism, I don't know what is.Entertaining and well worth reading. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Made for older toddlers
I did not realize this coloring book would have as much written text in it as it did.I bought it for my nephew's 3rd birthday, and it was somewhat advanced for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful abridged story
Much more than a coloring book, this is a wonderfully abridged edition of The Wizard of Oz with the terrific original illustrations. Great for reading aloud to younger kids. And I enjoy coloring the picture myself. I also recommend the Alice in Wonderland coloring book by the same publisher - my three-year-old will sit and listen to all 40-plus pages! An excellent product at a great price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect color book for the true Oz aficionado
Granted, the drawings W. W. Denslow did for the first editions of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," are not as famous as what John Tenniel did for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," but these are a lot more fun to color. The illustrations alone would have been enough to justify picking up this reasonably priced coloring book, but there is an abridged version of Baum's story as well. This is good because for those who grew up on the classical movie and never got around to reading the original story (and how many hands would you need to count those who did not grow up that way?), the differences can be rather startling. The story is especially adapted for young readers, with large type, and the pictures can be colored in which crayons, colored pencils, or even, I suppose, markers. My advice, however, would be to pick up a couple of these because it is not nice to give a child a present like this and then fight with them over it so that you can color in the Cowardly Lion yourself."The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Coloring Book" is just such a neat idea.Hopefully they can do this for the other dozen Oz books that Baum wrote. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Wiz is back
While not quite as compelling or dramatic as other installments in the Oz series, "Dororthy and the Wizard in Oz" is a pleasant follow up to "Ozma of Oz" (the strongest of all the early Oz entries). Baum doesn't try to accomplish too much in this tale--his main intent seems to get that humbug of a wizard back to Oz. Along the way there are some amusing adventures, populated with wonderful new creatures and characters. As a child, I especially enjoyed the scene (and illustration) in which the Wizard slices the vegetable king cleanly in half, though the escape from the gargoyles is also quite engaging. I think girls will love this book for the return of Dorothy and for the rascal, Eureka the kitten, while the boys will love the Wizard's dastardly sword and slights-of-hand that he performs throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz
My 9 year old daughter is very much enjoying all the books in the series. This one is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dorothy and the Wizard in Ozby L. Frank Baum
Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum is the fourth book in the oz series and deals with the adventures of dorothy, her relative zeb, the talking horse Jim and the the very strange kitten Heureka. In this story we get to meet the vegetable people, the return of the wizard of oz and princess ozma, the cowardly lion and many other beloved charachters from the former books. The illustrations are splendid and the adventures are filled with exciting encounters and astounding discriptions. This series just gets better and better and I can not wait to read the next book in this splendid series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Philosophy, Courage a Brain and a Heart!
I got this book as a gift from someone with a serious jones for the Wizard of Oz.At first, I just liked it because it reminded me of my friend and tossed it in a corner. Then one day I got around to reading it.Now, it stays where I can pick it up and open to read a simple passage in the moment. It is a fun and brilliant way to explore a different philosophy, or at least question how you choose to do things.I can't imagine many people in this culture being unaware of the examples and characters. Now when the Wizard of Oz comes on, I tend to filter it through this!

5-0 out of 5 stars To the Young at Heart.
On one of my recent journeys through the Land of Oz, the Ozarks, I visited with my friend Roger S. Baum, the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum-the author of the "Wizard of Oz". I asked him what he thought about the theory of his great-grandfather being a Zen Master. He admitted he really didn't know. That he hadn't read "The Zen of Oz". That it has been his experience that such things were only done by people that saw an opportunity to make money off Great Grandfather's work. After I explained the gist of Joey Green's premise I did notice a slow smile take over Roger's face. He was intrigued. Though he would not corroborate Joey's claims he did state that Great Grandfather would probably not turn over in his grave if he knew about "The Zen of Oz". The one caveat Roger then mentioned was that first and foremost the Oz Series is a collection of fantasies for the young at heart. Meant to be taken with sincerity but not too seriously. The rest of our conversation was private.
1-0 out of 5 stars are you kidding me?
An interesting idea behind the book... finding the spiritual connections and philosophy behind the story of the wizard of oz. The writing style of the book is poor, redundant, and not terribly smooth (inconsistent pronoun usage, repetitive sentence structure, etc.) The book has its glimmers of insight, but in general, I think it looks way too much into the Wizard of Oz- and that means a lot coming from someone who usually gives new-age, self-help, and spiritual books more credit than they probably deserve sometimes. The very basic connections between the Yellow Brick Road and intuition or following the true self, and the basic metaphors of each the scarecrow, lion, and tin man are backed by literary evidence and are argued logically... and I think these basic connections are compelling. Prevelant is the idea that each of the characters, whether his/her search is for brains, courage, a heart, or home, actually possesses these qualities already... it's just a matter of discovering this truth. Green also goes into the philosophy of love, intelligence, courage, and one's personal "home" or the self, and that too is interesting (but at times can be a stretch when relating it back to the story). The book sometimes takes great dives into detail, jumping to conclusions that are based 100% on speculation ... of the author, and not at all on a logical connection. An example you ask? Well, the Lion, while being primped at the Wash & Brush Up Co. in Emerald City, the author observes, gestures "with a decidedly limp wrist, possibly insinuating that his sexual orientation is a `fate I don't deserve.'" The author continues to discuss the lion's inability to come out of the closet to come to terms with his true self, assuming that his limp wrist gesture and interest in fine fabrics means the he is gay. Frankly, I think the lion was just acting like a wealthy king. He also suggests Ms. Gulch is a "victim of her own repressed sexuality." To come to this conclusion would require pure speculation based upon [standards], and though the idea has good intentions, it actually weakens his overarching statement. The idea of the book was obviously very interesting to me, but ... the book has left me disappointed and unsatisfied. The kernels of truth in the book are cluttered by details that are not fully developed. But the pictures are cool, I guess. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A labor of love
Although I had seen "The Wizard of Oz" 1939 classic movie more than a dozen times, I had somehow managed to make it through 41 years on this fine planet without reading the original L. Frank Baum "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" book. However, after reading "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire, which completely re-imagines Baum's creation, I became very curious to go back to the original and actually read it.The library had a number of choices available, but when I saw the gorgeous Centennial Edition "Annotated Wizard of Oz," I knew this was the one for me.And I was not disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Ageless Classic For All Ages
As a child, I had the movie based off of this book memorized. The movie was a classic favorite of mine, this during a time when the Wizard of Oz was broadcasted yearly, when there were only 4 or 5 channels on the television (at least that we were able to get reception on) and when the battle between VHS and Beta was still abound. And at this age, during this era -- it never really occured to me that all this wonder was based off of a book even older than the movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz"
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is the first book of the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Written in 1900, it could be considered America's first fairy tale. The book is different from the famous 1939 movie in that it is clear that Dorothy Gale falls asleep and dreams the characters and situations that teach her the home spun virtues of L. Frank Baum's America.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Book Better Than the Movie
The Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, receives four out of five stars from me.

5-0 out of 5 stars wizard of oz
This book is really good book plus it ha alot more parts in the book than in the movie. Once i started reading this book i could not put it down. It was a non stop adventure book. Every time the story started to die it would start right back up again.4-0 out of 5 stars Feels like a magazine - lots of glossy pictures
I bought this as a read-aloud picture book for my four-year old daughter, who's into the movie big time. It's perfect for her, except that the binding and pages feel like a magazine, not a book. I wish it were more durable!Read more

I have not found a more beautifuly illustrated book yet, in any genre of book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb All-Round Wonderful Wizard
This well-illustrated version of The Wizard of Oz is what I regard as a definitive gift-book edition of the story. Santore's superb illustrations speak for themselves and serve as vivid and real pictorial depictions of Baum's enchanting fantasy world. In addition, the carefully-condensed text flows so smoothly that the story moves ever vforward, without the transient episodes, that it does not seem lacking at all. I know that some readers might find the story lacking with omissions and such, but it is not a serious problem because the essence is still there. In short, a superb book for any fan of Oz, and any new readers encountering this world for the first time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Barry Moser's (almost slightly) Gothic Oz Illustrations
This book has been around since 1986 and still no-one has written a review about it?!Well, this is the 1986 Pennyroyal Press Edition with 62 illustrations by Barry Moser, which is mentioned several times in "the Annotated Wizard of Oz" book.Barry Moser's almost-photographic pencil drawings are described as looking like wood-gravings (Look for 4 samples of his pictures in Google Images).Barry Moser draws the story of 'the Wizard' with pictures never tried before, but there are a few pictures that have been drawn similar before, but he certainly old characters like the King of the Winged Monkeys, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Winkies like never before. All the pictures are in a portrait style, looking at somebody's face/figure or a landscape of nature and are all in black-and-white, occasionally with stripes in the background and most areas. He has the Gale family look Australian (Aunt Em and Uncle Henry more like an African) and the Silver Shoes are more like sandals.however, some pictures are a bit of a disappointment, like Glinda and the melting Witch.Barry Moser has the Wizard of Oz modelled after (then) Precident Ronald Reagan and the his wife - Nancy Reagan - as teh model for the Wicked Witch of the West, but the Good Witch of the North looks good, possibly what Adderpele looked like in the 1975 "Wiz" Stage - but it's just a guess.glinda doesn't really look beautiful, and the Wicked Witch doesn't really look that menacing or scary, and some pictures - mostly during the forests are very difficult to make out and can strain your eyes if you focus on it a lot.Just about anybody (who is human in the story) has their face covered in shadow, so we don't exactly see what they look like.Unfortunatley, we don't see any part of the Emerald City except the Soldier (Omby Amby), the Guardian, the Wizard's forms and the Gates to the City.
