5-0 out of 5 stars What Do You Review With A Book Like This
This book is breathtaking, a real stand-out visually -- and at the same time grippingly educational and fun for kids. If you want to see that dawning light of curiousity and hunger for understanding in a child that's just learning that it's fun to learn, there's no better book than this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful as a read for science class!
I have read this selection to several classrooms. The students not only love to see the pictures, but they LOVE to guess as to the purpose of the tails and it is a great lead in for adaptation.Additionally, (as all elementary students love to do), they love to share their knowledge of the animals and share what they think. After a group read, this book has become popular with students who sometimes shy away from science but just become fasicnated with the facts and cool animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Won over
I had thought about buying this, but always decided not to. My son (5 years old) checked this out of the library on his own. He loves it. The cut-paper artwork is beautiful. Despite the fact-based discussion, it can be a very fun book to read. On the section about whales being able to hear sounds hundreds of miles away, my son always breaks into a whale song of his own. He also stunned his daycare teachers when they went on-line to check out his assertion that crickets had ears in their knees. So there you have it: fun, educational, beautiful! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and Fun
My 3 year old daughter loves it.It explains the process at a level she can understand.Great when used with the Butterfly Garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Butterfly Book for Preschool-Third Grade
I am the director of a lower school (pre-k-2nd) and we have used this book for years. It is the perfect way to introduce children to the wonderful world of metamorphosis. And if you can also actually get the Painted Lady Butterflies and "grow" them in your class, it is an invaluable experience. We have our children keep journals and then buy them each a copy of this great book (it's cheap in paperback) and they get to keep the experience forever. One correction to another review: painted ladies and all butterflies do spin chrysalids, not cocoons. They look similar, but the chrysalis usually has little specks of gold in it, which is where the name comes from. Yes I am a huge fan of this book--and a huge fan of butterflies. This author also has a lovely book about honeybees, called Honeybees.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book to accompany Butterfly Houses, Pavillions
We got this book in addition to a home "Butterfly Pavillion" by InsectLore. It prepared my son and us for what to expect as the Painted Lady Butterflies were developing through each stage. So even duringthe lulls in the action, we could spark some anticipation. Which heightened the whole process for my 5 year old. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best beginners' guide
I have quite a few `bug' guides and the Peterson guides are always my favorite. The drawings are excellent, the writing is clear, and I like the behavioral and collecting notes added. There are more flashy guides with more pictures but they tend to be more limited - you can only put so many pictures in a book. They also usually cost much more. This is the book I would buy for someone wanting to learn more about the entire insect world and begin identifying the bugs they find. If their interest grows I would simply move up the full version of the same book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best field guide to the insects of North America
This is a great book for both the beginner as well as those who are at the intermediate level of their study of insects.

3-0 out of 5 stars Typical Peterson
Typical of all the Peterson guides. This one has all the information one normally needs. It also is arranged in sometimes frustrating sections which require one to go to several sections for a complete profile of the subject matter. I simply do not want to spend the time going back and forth in the book when I simply want basic information on one insect.

3-0 out of 5 stars great pocket guide
A simple, easy to take along guide. The photos, and brief descriptions make it easy to identify the Butterflies and Moths you come across.

3-0 out of 5 stars great pocket guide
A great book to keep in your pocket so it is handy when you see an unusual caterpillar. It's nice to also see what your caterpillar will become...each picture ID includes another of the butterfly or moth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive and Useful!
Our childrens librarian recommended this book to us and it has been so helpful. We are always finding caterpillars, cocoons, butterflies and have found the illustrations in this book very helpful in identifying them.My son is five and the illustrations are good enough so that he can identify the caterpillars and butterflies even though he can't read yet.I would highly recommend this guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars Zoo-ology is a real winner!
This larger than life book appeals to children because of it's very large size. The art work is outstanding and because there is very little written word except the name of all the animals it lends itself to discussion. My 2-1/2 year old grandson Gavin loves it. Also on every page is a chameleon who changes to be like the animals on the page, so finding him is another adventure for young folks. Animals are grouped in interesting ways, for example "black and white animals", not your average animal book. As a biologist, animal lover, and grandparent it is an A+ read. And at such a reasonable price I bought two. Buy it, you will love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I loved this book. It's an oversized book and it's full of animals that you find in the Zoo. The illustrations of the animials are simply beautiful. Exactly my taste. The book has barely any text, only pages full of animials along with their names. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Review for "We Like To Nurse"
A very sweet book, however I expected a bit more "book" for the price. It is a small, thin, paperback book. While I am always excited to see books that show/normalize breastfeeding, I would not recommend this book to others. Again, it's sweet but lacking sparkle and shine.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Kids BreastfeedingBook
This is a nice simple book for younger children which shows animals nursing. It gives real situations and actual facts while still being an entertaining book. Great for older nursing children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Unexamined metaphysics
My boy brought this home the school library and the title of the book intrigued me. What is it like to swim by swishing your tail, round and round, in a small little bowl; or, eating fish flakes sprinkled from above when the person decides it's time to be fed; or to live in an environment that deteriorates day after day into murkiness until you are suddenly scooped up by a net and put into an even smaller container while your bowl is being cleaned? What IS it like to be a fish? Alas, there are no answers to that question found in this book -- pity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and series
As a mother, teacher, and naturalist, I have been very impressed with this book (as well as the other Let's-Read-and-Find-Out series). It is incredible how so much information is packed into a book for kids and is also full of colorful artwork engaging to the eye. This book about worms covers how worms help the earth, how they eat, make waste, reproduce (tastefully written of course), where they go in the winter, why you find them out when it's raining, how they sense things around them, how their bodies are designed to help them move, all the while explaining things with proper terms, yet simple to understand. This book, as well as the others in the series, has an activity or two in the back of the book for hands-on learning. Excellent resource for any nature/science library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Debunks some of the myths about wolves
Even though nearly everyone has a close association with domesticated wolves, there is a common and unwarranted hysteria about them. This unwarranted thought process has led to them being reviled by many and hunted to near extinction. Plans by wildlife managers to re-introduce them into places like Yellowstone Park have met with strong and at times irrational resistance. This book is designed to set the record straight and to show wolves as they truly are.

2-0 out of 5 stars No good for a backyard birdwatcher
I bought this book just so that I could identify some of the birds at my backyard birdfeeder. So far, I've only been able to identify one from this book. The pictures and descriptions aren't very good, and it's very hard to narrow down the type of bird, since they're not organized by geographic area, etc.I would definitely recommend the National Audobon Society books over this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first book
My 7yo daughter and I have had great fun identifying the birds in our backyard with this little book.It features the most common birds one might see.I like how they how it organized by size and type of bird (allthe water birds are together, all the birds of prey, all the smallerFenches and Sparrows, etc.Easy to find that way. There was one birddrawing that was more colorful than the actual bird we saw. This might bedue to the fact that they don't picture every type of one kind of bird.Itis a GREAT first guide for kids and adults that are just starting.I likealso that it shows the male and female of a type.
