4-0 out of 5 stars Fun with Animals!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Emergent Readers
This book is perfect for a new reader. The repetitive text allows a child to master sight words while reading enjoyable story. The vivid illustrations of the animals give picture clues to the new reader to help him or her figure out the unknown words. The rhyme patterns also help develop phonic skills.Perfect for kindergarten and first grade!

1-0 out of 5 stars Baby got a "smack"?
Not only did my kids seem very bored by this book, but I was a little disturbed that one of the very few suggestions of activity was a mother monkey "smacking" her baby.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a favorite
There's isn't much of a story to this repetitive book.Sure, there's lots of animals in this zoo and they all 'look back' at the main character after she looks at them, but it's not enough to make it interesting. My 2 and 4year old weren't impressed and they LOVE books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Akookie + Loris = LOVE
I fell in love with a slow loris at the zoo as it fell in love with the wide-eyed glassy stare of my almighty cutest stuffed raver elephant pet Akookie... I immediately had to learn all I could about the adorable lor-able, and as a present for dearest Akookie (and Ak's doting human parents) bought Slow Loris... So beautiful and funny and somehow reminiscent of my deranged circle of friends and their amassed collection of hats. *blink blink* The Loris loves you. Prepared to be Awwwwwww-ed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new meaning for "wildlife"
My family got a big giggle out of the "slow" loris having a wild time after dark, wearing crazy hats and carrying on. It puts a new slant on why the animals you see in zoos are always asleep.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Popular Request
I purchased a copy of "Slow Loris" purely by fortunate accident(mostly because I fell in love with the illustrations)at a bookstore in Oxford England.I brought the book home to Western Nebraska U.S.A. as a gift for my 2 year old son. He's 3 now and it's still his favorite book, and my favorite to read to him.Mr.Deacon writes with a simple brilliance that ignites the imagination of adult and child alike. His illustrations are nothing short of wonderful and they carry his story with a delicious simplicity that conveys the emotions of his "Loris" at every twist.A beautiful and modern example of the concept that things are not always what they seem, "Slow Loris" is truely a JOY; every single time. We're VERY anxiously awaiting his next book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable exploration of the wondrous diversity of nature
The Kids' Guide To Zoo Animals is a simple field guide featuring 200 popular zoo animals. Though intended for young adults, it is a reference that, although brief in descriptive information on each species, does not talk down to the reader and will appeal to all ages. Each animal listing covers one page and includes color photographs, and information concerning the animal's description, diet, habitat, behavior, IUCN status, and threats to the species' survival. An enjoyable exploration of the wondrous diversity of nature.

Editorial Review

In author-illustrator Todd Parr's world, there are a few important rulesone must always follow when visiting the zoo. "Do feed an elephant peanuts.Don't feed her peanut butter. Do take dancing lessons with a porcupine. Don'tslow dance with him. Do wash your clothes with a rhino. Don't hang them on hishorns to dry." Civilization would be much more civil if we could all abide bythese simple behavior guidelines.Read more

Among the crowd of classics, such as "Goodnight Moon," and newer books by Boynton and others, this book captivates the attention of our 14-month old son, and we are grateful to the author. After two months of daily reading, we put it away.It was recently rediscovered, and he constantly reaches for it in the pile of books we make available to him.Is it the colors? The characters?Or the sheer amusement of it all?Maybe it's laughing along with his father or mother as we read it together. 3-0 out of 5 stars Peter's nameless sister
This is the worst book in the Snappy series, but it is still cute. Peter Penguin is jealous of his new sister, who never gets a name in this book. He goes running away and gets lost. He loves to chat to himeself and his baby sister chats back and finds him. Then he returns home and they chitter chatter all day long together. Simple story, cute drawings. The problem i have with it is the baby sister does not get a name. My 9-month-old does like to chew on Peter's round black head though. Not a bad book, but other's in this series are a lot better like Penny Polar bear, Lucy Lobster and Tiny Tyanasourous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for encouraging an early love of poetry
The poems in this beautifully illustrated book are perfect for children; short and silly yet well written. My 3-year old and I sit together and read the entire book, and we each have our favorite animal poem.A wonderful book- I will buy more of Florian's collections.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review of a sort.
No one can accuse poet Douglas Florian of being uninterested in the public opinion of his work.Mr. Florian is one of the few relatively well-known children's writers out there who, by his own hand and without any interference on my part, was kind enough to ask me to review his book, "zoo's who" by e-mail.I, a lowly Amazon.com reviewer, was somewhat amazed to receive his request (all the more so when I noticed that it was written in brightly colored verse).I was reluctant initially, a reluctance that increased tenfold when I opened my most recent issue of School Library Journal and found that Mr. Florian had written a letter taking an SLJ reviewer to task for a) Incorrectly writing the title of his book with capital letters and b) not properly spacing the letters in his poem, "The Slugs", thereby nixing the point of the work. The fact that the review was a positive one did not stop Mr. Florian from his critique. Now I tend to write reviews of children's books with only the vaguest sense that the author may, at some time, care what I've written.I have never received an angry e-mail from someone like Carmen Agry Deedy for my review of her gawdawful, "The Yellow Star" or from Marcus Pfister for his lamentable, "Rainbow Fish".But then, I've never known for a fact that the author has or would, at some point, read what I've written. So do I shrink from my responsibilities and refuse to review this book simply because I can't write three words without wondering if they are "nice"?Do I shy away from this momentous occasion and leave the reviewing to somebody else?No sir!Onward I revieweth!
5-0 out of 5 stars A tempting menagerie
In one of his most artful surprises yet, Douglas Florian has created another delightful, spine-tingling gaggle of animals, the usual tongue-twisting, alliterative troupe: the manta ray, the penguin, the bush baby, the bats, the slugs, the terns, the wallaby and, my favorite, the sloth:

Editorial Review

The world rejoices each time a rare giant panda is born. When tiny HuaMei was born on August 21, 1999, her caregivers gave her extra protection fromany potential dangers. For the first weeks of her life, this baby could beviewed only with a camera in her den at the San Diego Zoo. She and her mother,Bai Yun, spent the time bonding--panda papas have nothing to do with the raisingof their cubs. Gradually, as Hua Mei grew bigger and stronger, she began to playand eat on her own, and the world was finally allowed to see her when she wasabout five months old.Read more

"Crash! Bang! Crash! Bang! Boom!Something's going on in Nora's room!"Mother, cooking dinner, baby twins playing in the kitchen, the family dog and even a pet parakeet wonder at all the noise from upstairs."How much noise does a little girl need?Sounds like the whole city zoo got freed!"Could it be bears dancing with moose, rhinos playing musical chairs or gorillas playing duck, duck, goose?Maybe it's an elephant hoedown or a couple of giants sitting on a town.Let's go upstairs to the door that says "Enter if you Dare" and find out..... The dynamic sister duo of Jessica Harper and Lindsay Harper duPont have authored another clever, silly picture book that's perfect for youngsters 3-7.Ms Harper's humorous rhyming text is complemented by her sister's wonderfully expressive and colorful illustrations and together they've created a charming, joyful story, with a little joke at the end, that won't be lost on young readers. So take a deep breath, open that bedroom door and find out what Nora's up to. ... Many years ago, in a daring escape still talked of in zoos worldwide, an elephant, an anteater, a turtle, and a flamingo went "over the wall" at the city zoo. This is their story, spun tersely but dramatically in simple language, accompanied by strangely compelling monochromatic illustrations that reference pop culture icons from Edward Hopper's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great escape
Tohby Riddle is one of my favourite children's authors. He has a great sense of humour that appeals to adults and children alike. Great Escape uses lots of pop culture references - The Beatles Abbey Road album cover, King Kong and the Lochness Monster, etc - in a way that creates humour for more mature readers, but because the fun and exciting story doesn't rely on understanding these references, the book remains a real crowd-pleaser.5-0 out of 5 stars An adult story for children.
The author and illustrator of this book did quite a job! It is very 'tricky' to tell such a serious story, that carries such deep meaning, to a 6 year old. But it worked!I have had to read it a few times to mydaughter.I like books that open doors for children and that encouragethem to ask questions about real life things. Like: "Why did the 'badguys' take them away?", and "Will 'the bad guys' always try andget the Flamingo?".It has shown my daughter, the price that freedomsometimes has.Very different approach to children's books, with anundertone of seriousness, and a hint of humor. 5-0 out of 5 stars George's Debut
At first, I thought George was on his own. I had no idea at all George lived with a girraffe and 8 monkeys. Eventhough it says it's made in 1942, it was really written in Europe in 1939. If you wanna see George's family again, I'm writing a book called Curious George and Johnny. I got this book at Waldenbooks in the Sunvalley Mall, as part of a huge H.A. Rey treasury. It was so cool when they used Cecily as a boat, bridge, mountain, eeter totter and harp. There was only one problem: I could not tell which monkey's which. They all look eactly the same. The main reason I like this book is because George was in it. And one more thing, my dad suggested the reason George wasn't with his family at the beginning of Curious George, is because he wanted to take a day off and do something out of this world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Cruelty-Free Book
This is a clever, witty, and ultimately cheerful book about how a Giraffe and nine monkeys unexpectedly help each other. Published in 1946, it's the first book featuring "Curious George." George was eventually taken from his habitat by the kind man in the yellow hat, but here we see George with his Mother and seven siblings. The book is filled with both verbal and visual humor (the nine monkeys all sleep together in a gigantically long giraffe bed). The giraffe helps the monkeys play by volunteering to play as a slide, a teeter-totter, and a sailboat. In all of these scenarios, the giraffe volunteers to play, is asked nicely to play, or looks pleased. There's one funny scene where the monkeys make a pair of stilts for Cecily, who is described as "terribly excited" (not coerced). In some deft self-referential humor, Rey draws the giraffe on the stilts "so high the page isn't big enough to show all of her."
