Needed to do some Refresher Training
I have experience in HTML and CSS; however, I had not dealt with them in some time (five years or so). I needed to find a book that would get to the basics, yet at the same time NOT be so exhaustive that I would find myself dozing. Can anyone blame me for not wanting to be bored to death by wordy descriptions?
very good book
this is a very good book for beginners.TSTC Waco is using it for the intro class in the webmaster 2 year degree program. Covers HTML , XHTML, AND CSS STYLE SHEETS in detail. A lot of screen shots showing what the code should look like.Which, for a beginner is VERY IMPORTANT! If you do not know the code how else would you know that you got it right if something small is wrong.The only fault I have with the book compared to my first HTML book is there is not a quick reference card printed on the back cover.This is a minor thing but is handy for quick review.

Great Learning Tool for the non-technical
This is a true learner's guide to building standards-based Web pages.It includes a lot of information on common HTML and CSS traps and pitfalls as well as why common conceptions about style are often wrong.To help the reader actually learn the material in a fun and friendly manner it includes a lot of puzzles and exercises and other material that make it a joy to learn.This is truly a guide for the non-programmer that will have them quickly up to speed on how to design and build a web site.One of the virtues of this particular book is that the authors relate common problems and frustrations of users and how to avoid them in your website.

Dont buy from amazon
Attn all students! Amazon promises to send books by a specific date then changes the dates without your consent. Trying to get a refund is a nightmare. Be prepared to get stuck without the book and still get the bill. Customer service is outsourced to India and is no help even if you could understand them. 4 wks and counting and still no promised refund. This not the only time this has happened.The issue is not with the seller it is Amazon.

I had this for my business law class and it was excellent! It is easy to read, the cases are interesting and the format is one of the best for a textbook!

It's a good book, but despite the hype it really doesn't go into a lot of detail.
MySQL at its best
Paul DuBois is an excellent author. I bought his book, MySQL, about 4 years ago and used it until it was out of date. This new edition proves once again that he is one of the best authors and authorities in this field.

best book to pass the oca 10g exam
i buy this book together with sybex's book and have passed the oca exam with 87% score (less than what i expected though). i found this book easier to read and understand compared to sybex's book, and the many-but-short chapters works better for me. if you could only choose one book to pass the 1Z0-042 exam then this is definitely the best choice. but don't forget to practise what you read (although the book makes it looks so simple), you'll remember more by trying each exercise in this book.

Good OCP Preparation
I used this book to (sucessfully) prepare for the OCA exam. It is well structured and important points for the exam are specially highlighted. This makes the content memorable and easy to learn.

Great book; unethical publisher
This book is excellent. The author writes about programming in a clear and concise way that makes Java make sense. While Java may not be the simplest language to start with, it is widely used throughout the industry and provides a solid stepping stone to other languages. Savitch provides many examples of code and explains how it works, step by step. Too many programming books assume the reader will fill in missing pieces. Finally, an author who fills them in for us!
Best Written Java Book
The author, Savitch, writes some of the best-written, easy-to-read computer language books.The fourth edition is a concisely-written, enjoyable book with excellent examples and coverage of Java 5.0, which is the newest, latest revision as of January '06.
1st edition review
I have just completed (i need only two more chapters) the first of edition of this book.While not as exhaustive as the the edition for sale here I can tell you the author is good at what he does.I haven't decided if I am going to purchase this edition but let me say that the author's prose style reminds me of the best computer programming books I read while I was an undergraduate at the University of Florida in the early 90's.This book is suitable for teaching a first or second year class of computer science students at a university.Unlike those silly "Teach yourself Java programming in 24 hours" this is the kind of programming book that really teaches you something. ... A managerial overview of agile methodologies
A complete overview of the most important agile methodologies available. The authors have done a great job gathering, analyzing and summarizing the most important facts concerning XP, Scrum, Evo and UP. You will be told about pros and cons, success factors, risks to consider and implementation flavors (common customized implementation practices). Just don't get confused about the purpose of the book, because you won't be able to implement the methodologies just by reading it. You'll be into a better position to take a more informed decision about the methodology that best fits your development team. For the implementation process you'll surely need extra references focused on each specific methology.

Great summary of agile methods.
The first portion of the book provides a good and relatively specific overview of the rationale behind agile methods, as compared to waterfall.Great material if you need to write a proposal to move to an agile method.

A great buy!
I am a self-taught novice graphic/web designer and I bought this book hoping to be able to incorperate some flash into my works. I downloaded the free 30 day trial of Flash 8 Pro and started working on this book. It worked like a charm. I am half way through the book and I already feel that I have a decent amount of knowledge in Flash.
A Wonderful Learning Tool
I was incredibly happy with Mr. Kerman's book, which, through the heavy use of tutorials, allowed me to become comfortable using Flash very quickly.

A NATIVE WINDOWS C GUIDING ANGEL

One of the best Window programming books
This book is one of the best because it forms a foundation for everything that comes after. If you want to understand Windows, you have to have it. It doesn't cover advanced topics, but in order to understand advanced Windows programming, you need to understand everything in this book.

The book is great... I gave a bad review b/c of amazons way of charging me 6 dollars to read the book online when I never saw any print about that... I didn't want to pay for that, and there is no way they going to let me get out of paying it.I would recomend this boook to any one intersted in A+ certification, however buy the book from anyone outside of amazon.

A good book to learn on
I've had to learn InDesign for a couple freelance projects, and I felt this book was concise and a wonderful reference guide.The fact it is not just drowning in text on each page (ahem...Peachpit Press) made it easier to skim and find what you need in a short amount of time.
Very useful and user friendly
The Classroom in a Book for Adobe InDesign.cs2 was well organized and easy to use.
New full color edition is a great way to learn
I have been learning Adobe's applications via their Classroom In A Book series. I find there is just nothing better out there.After all it is the official training program from Adobe written by Adobe experts - what else is there to say! The book itself is made of quality paper and is beautifully layed out. They give text and graphics ample space on each page, nothing is cramped and everything is arranged in a logical order. The instructions are precise and given in small enough steps with lots of graphics and pictures along the way so you won't get lost. In fact, each chapter is easy and interesting to follow and it helps that the projects are beautifully designed layouts. You'll create magazine pages, newsletter pages, a restaurant menu, a CD insert etc. that you look forward to finish and that will leave you inspired. Some chapters encourage you to also "Explore On Your Own" and each chapter features a review and answers section to test your aquired knowledge. Maybe you have to revisit some of the earlier chapters because you may have forgotten some details once you've been plugging away for a while, but that simply speaks for the volume you will have to absorb since InDesign is afterall a complex application. Having said that, everybody should feel very confident to use and further explore InDesign upon completion of the book. It includes a CD with 15 lessons and Quicktime tutorial movies.

Complement to other sources available
I think author did a wonderful job filling in where other popular litrature about PIX left off.I read the CCSP book, and leared alot.This book filled in stuff that CCSP book just does not talk about.Not to knock the CCSP book; each auther can only fill in so much.It is a difficult decision on what to keep and what to leave off.I find the PIX and ASA book is very practical.If you want a good understanding of this platform, then you want this book as the pliers in your tool box of knowledge.Do not expect it to be swiss army tool though.I think author was especially considerate to the reader's needs to publish items that other litrature just does not cover.There is alot of good information.Nice pictures which addressed questions I had and even posted to some CCIE sites and there was no answer.Definately worth buying.

Very little on ASA
This book is very helpful for PIX firewalls, but is mislabeled for ASA. There is very little on the ASA product. Usually just a mention of command differences between ASA and PIX. If you are looking for a book on ASA do not buy this book.

author brilliantly combines what and how with why of css
this book is excellant.the author does a great job of teaching css by providing clear examples which build upon one another. he combines what and how with why and makes it fun in the process. this is a very efficient learning tool. i'll be sure to buy his coding book when it comes out.great job!

Great, Straight-Forward, No Fluff
This book is an incredible guide to writing Web code the right way from the design side. Most websites are so poorly coded, and most texts I've used to make sense of using XHTML/CSS have fallen short. But Stylin' delivers real-world, extremely useful examples like the drop down menus. You will walk away from this book understanding clearly how to structure your pages with clean, standardized markup (XHTML) and how to style them perfectly across clients (CSS). Imagine (for example) a dynamic dropdown menu built solely from a super-clean ul list!

very technical
The book was ok but it made for very difficult reading; it was very technical.I had to purchase it for class.Luckily I had a good professor who could break down the concepts more clearly.I would, however, suggest that Devry get an easier book to digest next time.

Oh my!
I considered myself an advanced Photoshop user until I read this book. Chapters on selection(8,9,10) and compositing (11,12,13) are simply amazing. If this book cannot satisfy your hunger for truly advanced concepts and techniques, no others on the market will. If you want to be a truely advanced -expert level Photoshop user, anything else is uncivilized. Oh my.

Superb instructional book for my needs
I bought this book for two reasons (a) I needed an overview of IP and (b) I wanted to examine different pattern analysis algorithms with a practical twist.On both counts, as an non-IP researcher, I was very satisfied.The book is very well laid out, so well in fact that it would put to shame many of its rivals.It served my needs.I can't comment on whether it will meet the needs of a broader community.I would certainly recommend it based on my experience.

Practical and Useful
This book educates the reader in image processing and MATLAB.While I am experienced in both, I found the book to be an extrememly useful reference book for projects involving image compression and image representation.The book offered practical descriptions and useful code for computing the fast wavelet transform.It was especially useful in describing how the edges should treated.This is a big issue that other textbooks gloss over.I had never seen it described in a textbook, and it was described so well.
The best of its kind.
If you want to get up to speed on Matlab and plan to use it for image processing, this book is a must.

Introduction to Logic
I read this book in early 1980.Because of my background in mathematics, I read the language and deduction portion, of my own in just few days.Earlier I had read Morris Cohen & E Nagel's famous book.Treatment of scientific method etc. seemed better in the latter,yet to learn about various aspects of language usage and deductive logic was realy an electrifying experience then .The part on inductive logic is in its own way excellent.I have 2/3 editions of this book and used it when teaching to a class of judicial officers about use of logic in law esp. chapter 15.This is a must for the autodidact.

Elementary, my dear reader...
Logic is not just for Spock; deduction (which, if you read this book, you'll discover is rather different) is not just for Sherlock Holmes.Many if not most students of philosophy over the past 50 years have had their beginning logic training from an edition of this book, 'Introduction to Logic' by Irving M. Copi, now in its eleventh edition, also now with a co-author listed, Carl Cohen.
Ideal Text for Self-Study
I bought this book (along with the study guide) and began self-studying the material to improve my logical ability.The book is relatively easy to understand even for novices with no prior training in logic and uses examples that are entertaining and interesting.The answers to select homework questions (about 1/4) are in the back so I would suggest that for self-study, either the study guide (which includes another 1/4) or the complete answer guide should also be purchased.The text itself is very fun to go through and I think Copi and Cohen do an amazing job as teachers. For those planning on taking the LSAT, this book may prove more beneficial than a test prep course if you want to understand the actual reasoning behind the test and not just regurgitate formulaic test-taking strategies. ... Truly great book on algorithm design
I use this book in a course and I am immensely pleased with it. I must point out, though, that this is a very theoretical book. There is not much code and the authors use rather high-level psuedo code for what's there. However, it is great at explaining concepts and what the generic algorithms actually do. So it does its job quite brilliantly. If you need more code, you might want to pick up the Sedewick books, although the code could be better commented and organized if you asked me.

Extremely Wordy
This book is not concise; also the pseudocode syntax used in the book is annoying.
dealing with NP completeness
The text offers an interesting blend of rigour and informality. The numerous proofs in each chapter have that rigour. Yet what may be more important is how the text remains accessible to a primarily undergraduate audience.

You haven't mastered CSS until you've read this book.
After going through a round of book buying on Amazon (mainly Ajax and PHP books), I originally decided that this would be a 'glancer' at Barnes and Nobles. Having spent over a year designing full CSS w3c-compliant sites, I though there wasn't too much more I could learn on the subject. A day later I spent over an hour at B&N reading this book and then decided to purchase it. It's that great.
Not a good book
I've gone thru half the book, and I'm very disapointed to say the least.
A Perfect Step Beyond the Basics
To my web designer friends who are ready to move beyond DreamWeaver/GoLive and start doing things the "right" way, I have been recommending Dan Cederholm's "Web Standards Solutions" as the best beginner's CSS and HTML guide. I also tell them that they should buy this book, CSS Mastery, at the same time and start reading it once they have absorbed all of W.S.S.

All their examples work!
Excellent book. All their examples work and they describe the differences that can be encountered in different recent versions of PHP. Pretty much all you need is here, and the whole book comes on the CD so you can take it with you when you are travelling.

Excellent Read and Reference
For beginners this book is very worthwhile. I bought 2 "PHP and MySQL" books from Amazon and I haven't even opened the other book. Whenever I need code examples or a reference this book provides me with the answers.
