4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners
With no experience in 3D modeling, this book helped me get started. It showed me the best way to use the tools in Lightwave as well as some concepts behind modeling\animating. Now I am modeling cars, places, people, and doing some light animation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!
This book came just in time when i needed it!! It is in great quality, REALLY helpful book! This book is one of those beginner books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most have for Serious LightWavers
The book, 1001 Tips & Tricks, has straightforward techniques approach to Learning Advanced LightWave Skills and Knowledge.I purchased Timothy Albee's Lightwave 3D, "Getting Started Guide" which came with my purchase of the program, LightWave from Newtek. The Book got me started back in 2005. (A general skills book covers a broad range of LightWave. But does not get too deep, which is good for beginners.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic but a bit redundant
The blurbs about this book are right. There are no other places I have found for the kind and quality of information contained in this book...at least for a non-super expert in Lightwave 3D.
5-0 out of 5 stars More is more
I'm one of the authors, so take that into account. Still, there are around thirty authors total so I'm at most 1/30th biased.

5-0 out of 5 stars The is the best Character Creation book I've found.
The book, 1Cartoon Character Creation Volume 1 & 2, has straightforward techniques approach to Learning Advanced LightWave Skills and Knowledge.I purchased Timothy Albee's Lightwave 3D, "Getting Started Guide" which came with my purchase of the program, LightWave from Newtek. The Book got me started back in 2005. (A general skills book covers a broad range of LightWave. But does not get too deep, which is good for beginners.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to creating your own toons!
I brought this book when I was initially learning LightWave and had zero experience. I recommend buying 'Essential Lightwave 3D 8 ' prior or with this book if you are just beginning as this book assumes at least a basic understanding of what the tools are, what they do and where they are located.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great must-have book!
This book is a great one to have in your Lightwave library, and even if you use another software package you will be able to follow his techniquesto help you master the fascinating and technical aspects of animation.Jonny does assume you have basic knowledge of Lightwave 3D and have the ability to move around and understand it's interface. What I loved about this book is that doesn't tell you to do this and do that, He actually explains why! This is from setting up the interface to why he works the way he does.this book goes into great detail explaining how to create a character (and why you create it in a certain way) and how to texture it in a realistic way.I bought also his companion book Volume Two,because as he explains, there is just so much information you NEED to know!

1-0 out of 5 stars Uh... what?
I acquired the software used - without any manuals. So, I purchased this book in hopes that it would help me to learn the software. I was disappointed. The author obviously believed his readers would already have some experience with the software. (Perhaps if you already have some experience with Lightwave, this book will prove to be a big help to you.) I have ordered another book from Amazon which is supposed to include some tutorials. I'm hoping that after reading the new book and going through the tutorials, this book might provide some further insight. (Got my fingers crossed)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
I've looked around for a while to find a good LightWave book because I knew very little about the program when I received it.When I read this book I was shocked.I loved it from cover to cover and have got though itseveral times. It is good for both beginners and advanced users.

5-0 out of 5 stars The One Book
If you can only have one book on texturing/shading this is the book you would want. As a teacher I look for information on how to do things but more importantly, why. This is an amazing book with depth and breadth to suit the novice, the adept and the expert. You will discover the roots of the science and art of texturing in addition to the how-to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ed Sertab,Associate Professor of 3D Animation
If you are a freelance professional or a student of 3D you are going to find this book very useful.Every year I have to review several books to try to find a teaching tool that is clear and concise. This book hit the spot.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any Lightwaver
This is an excellent book, and very applicable to version 7.5 as well.It consists of many small tutorials and has some excellent solutions to complex problems. The only complaint I can find with this book, and the only thing keeping it from 5 stars, is that the book gets you going on creating an effect, then kind of trails off with some suggestions for improving the effect.4-0 out of 5 stars I like this book...
So you've purchased Lightwave and are confronted with an endless array of tabs and menus. You have some idea as to what HyperVoxels are, (or maybe not), but certainly don't know how to activate or create them, or know how to assign bones, model simple items and assign surfaces to them, or use lighting to create various effects. If you are looking for a good place to start, I personally found this collection of short projects to be a great way to begin to understand some of the many things that you can do with Lightwave; providing a great launching point to start experimenting from, now having a primary understanding as to how to "get around" in the program. Those with previous experience in Lightwave specifically or other advanced 3D applications in general may not benefit from this book, but I sure did. I spent a fair amount of money for this program and it has been useless to me - until now.1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of my time and money.
I am a newbie to Lightwave and 3D and I had hoped for this book to ease my transition into this interesting subject. Rather, it caused me grief. There were so many errors that I have to read over and over in order to grasp the faintest idea of what the author seemed to imply. An Advance user may not find the book useful since much of the stuff are geared towards beginners but the number of errors and inconsistencies makes the book a pain for a any beginner. Patrik may know the in and out of Lightwave 3D, but from this book, he failed to get that across. My advice to Patrick - next time you write a book, please spend more time going over it and save unsuspecting victims like me from wasting time and money. As a matter of fact, I'll give the book away for free to the first person who contacts me. This book should never have been sold in the first place. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.
This book is 482 pages long, and the second half of it is not Lightwave-(or even 3D)-specific: general concepts of animation like follow-through, squash-and-stretch, etc. Everything in this section has been said before, and more eloquently, in many other books on the topic of animation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is very good for learning animation, regardless of the software package you use.The one think I must say is that its hard to just jump to a chapter and start from where you want. From chapter 9 on is what interested me the most, the book didn't make it easy to just pick up from there and run.Well written, and great to practice from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book.Trust me.
Finally, a comprehensive book on the art of character animation that goes beyond "push this button, now push that one".

2-0 out of 5 stars A little vague...even for a beginner.
Nothing goes in-depth at all.I know it is intended for beginners but it's still pretty weak in my opinion.I understand the intention is to show you the path and leave the rest to you, but it barely even lets you know there is a path.
3-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only
I had no idea this book was really intended for Beginners to Lightwave - and I mean Absolute Beginners. The writer even admits that they have only been using Lightwave for a few months before writing this book, so anything more advanced than telling you what some of the buttons and options available refer to is beyond the scope of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Revealed Series "ROCKS"
If your interested in 3D Animation for Games or Movies this series of books from Thompson Learning is the way to go. Obviously Newtek will be releasing Lightwave v. 9 soon and I'm sure Amazon will be able to provide the copy of that book also. These books are perfect for the beginning 3D artist because they explain and visualize what you need to do in all of the tutorials, as opposed to books written for veterans which assume the reader knows where everything is located. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Definetly not for the beginner
I purchased this book in the hopes that I'd be able to learn LightWave 7. Sadly this book is definetly not for beginners. Early on I realized something was wrong when the book jumped straight into the Suface Editor. The chapters on modeling could hardly be described as tutorials. One modeling chapter dove straight into modeling a large skyscraper without teaching you many of the fundamentals of modeling. I felt like I was following a cook book. Step after step of 'type the following into the numeric window, check this option, uncheck that option.'. This is not how you learn. I had no understanding of why I was using the specified values and most of the time the author didn't go into any detail regarding it. The chapter on modeling a human face was both exciting and a let down. Hours upon hours of work and I still felt like the fundamentals escaped me, yet I had a decent looking model.
3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly good book, but shouldn't be the only one you have
While still trying to appreciate the huge task that the author undertook, I must say for those who consider buying the book to be aware that there are quite a few errors in the exercises that take some time to figure out (trial and error) for a LW newbie like me. At least I couldn't understand quite clearly how to get around LW's user interface just by following the explanations in the book.3-0 out of 5 stars Fair book, but not for the beginner
I was new to Lightwave when I purchased this book.On the surface it looked like it covers a good deal of material and it does. However, I take issue with the way some of it is presented. To the beginner, it felt like, "getting a drink from a fire hose."I was looking for a few simple examples to learn the basics from and gradually work to larger tutorials.I didn't find too much of that here. The first parts of the book jumped into texturing objects, before it really explained how to make the object in the first place. (i.e. modeling)This made it difficult to build objects that you could experiment on using different textures. The modeling section jumped right into designing a large city block or an entire human head at the start. It never really demonstrated how to do "simple" objects from start to finish. The closest it came to that delt with making subsections of skyscrapers that didn't look like anything until the entire building was completed. It would have been nice to do a few simple models before trying to build complex items like a city or human head.If you worked slowly through every step of the tutorials, you will eventually learn quite a bit.Unfortunately, by that time you've spent many, many hours before you have anything to show for the effort. You don't feel like you accomplish very much in the process. You can skip sections of the tutorials, but if you do, you will miss a trick or key that may not be repeated elsewhere.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Kind of useful
LW 8 Killer tips it's a beginner guide to some things that are already explained in the manuals. It's a fun to read, and has lot of illustrations. Don't expect too much knowledge in this book, just, like the name implies.... tips.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun, handy and inspirational book
LightWave 8 Killer Tips is a fun, handy and inspirational tool for Lightwave enthusiasts. It's filled with quality information presented in a "magazine side bar" style. Read it cover-to-cover for a tour-de-force of LightWave learning, or grab it when you have 5-minutes to spare and flip to any page for a quick information blast. This is a perfect book to pick up while you while waiting for renders.
4-0 out of 5 stars great for what it is
This is a great little book of tips. It never claims that you will be making the next star wars. It is a book of great little hidden tips. The types that are under rated, but really make a difference. Leave the heavy stuff to the "inside Lightwave 8" book. Which is well worth the money-however it's a HUGE book. This is real quick and easy to read, and you can jump to the section you want. Hell, i even found the humor made the book less tedious. Good work guys! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lighting in 7.5 is easy now
I have been using Lightwave for about 8 years now and have always had some trouble getting the lighting to look just right. This book explains everything you need to know about lighting within Lightwave.I thought that after 8 years I wouldn't need this book, but the author Nicholas Boughen proved me wrong. If you want your animations to have that professional look you have been wanting, you need to get this book and read it twice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Insites to Lighting in 3D
I have had the pleasure of reading this book over the past year or so and I find it a great educational tool.Get past the traditional pitfalls you can fall into without knowing the details of what to look for when going for photo-realism.Nick shows you from the basics up to what to look for in real life and how to translate it into a 3D equivalent using 3D lighting tools found in most high-end packages. It's amazing how it can really change the look of your stuff, and no more are you saying to yourself....."how are they getting that great look?".It has quite a bit of repetition but it is great if you use it for reference.Open your eyes to the secrets of 3D lighting techniques especially for Lightwave 3D.I hightly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full course on lighting, in a book...
This book is packed with information. In a clear, concise and entertaining manner Nick untangles the mystery of the art of lighting. I love the balance of the theoretical with the practical. You not only learn how to light a scene better, but you learn why you do it that way, and that, in the long run, is what is needed. I think that this book is not only a great resource for the Lightwave enthusiast, but would be a great benefit for any 3d user. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good not great
I got this book because I was very impressed by Leighs texturing tutorial she has on her website. On the positive side she does cover the basic concepts of shader settings and does so in a way that you can apply it to any 3D app youre using (Lightwave is old and obsolete 3D app, infact Leigh doesnt use Lightwave anymore). But I was a tad bit disappointed that it didnt go more into photoshop painting technics for creating textures (that might be an unfair critisism since this book is part of a Lightwave series). But the thing that really annoyed me about the book is that it was that the pics were all in B&W, and so color copys of the pics are included on the CD to be viewed on a computer. I mean why not just make this book an ebook and eliminate passing between a book and computer altogether? That is pretty cheap of the publisher to not print this book in color.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to my Lightwave library
Despite "Dan Blocker's" conspiracy theory, I found this book to be just what I needed for Lightwave texturing. The LW manual is of limited help and several other books, while great in their own ways (sorry, Dan and Tim), left me wanting a bit more info dressing up my models (especially with regards to UV mapping).
2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
I really have mixed emotions about this book. I ordered this online but wish I had the opportunity to see it before making the decision to buy it. It does a good job covering basics but a good web search will yield as good or superior tutorials. The included files are quite mediocre and and just reinforces the impression that the author possesses an adequate level of skills in the 2DCG realm.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must have!
"Lightwave3D 7.0 Character Animation" is a must-have for anyone trying to learn how to rig and animate in Lightwave3D. Timothy Albee takes all the mystery out of how to properly set up a character, including tips on modeling for rigging, weight maps, skelegons, bones and IK. It also shows you methods to circumvent Lightwave's quirky process of rigging to ensure the most stable rigs possible: the kind that animators like to use. On top of that, a good portion of the book is dedicated to animation techniques, including some great chapters on posing and conveying weight through your animations. And, the CD has a lot of useful content, including all the necessary supporting files to get you rigging or animating right away.4-0 out of 5 stars Cool!
This book is great. Lots of good information, and a cool character to boot.1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies!
When you read the first chapter you'll be lead into a false sense of comfort that newbies will be animating by the end of this book. Not true. You may successfully make it through the exercise in chapter 2 (though it didn't work for me) and even be impressed of the level of detail they show you in how to navigate the menus. But by chapter 3, you'll be lost.I got as far as opening the model included in the CD-ROM.The next section (p. 28) says "1. Pre-bend your model's arms..." and that's the end of my learning. All of the sudden you've got select portions of the model that you are working with, but the book never explains or shows how to get there (this part is pre-bending the shirt, and only is working with the shirt as if the rest of the chacter doesn't exist). If I could just figure out how to get that select part of the model on screen, I would be happy.Of course the book doesn't say HOW to pre-bend the arms of the character either, just to do so to make it look like the figure...This book is a waste unless you've got some modeling or animation experience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!
This is one of the best set of tutorials you can find. This book is geared to Lightwave 5.6 but is very useful if you use Inspire or LW 6.5. This book contains a tutorial on building a castle that would be a book unto itself! Be forwarned that if you are using Inspire you may have to improvise with some of the tutorials, as they call for numeric functions or plug-ins that are not present in Inspire. FYI, after seeing the missing functionality of Inspire, I forked over the cash for LW 6.5 and haven't regretted it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy if you own inspire 3d
If you bought inspire and needed more direction, BUY THIS BOOK. There are some usable techniques and insight from guys who make a living doing this. Hands-on, must do all tutorials. If you are the skimmer type reader, save you money. They should let inspire 3d users know that all tutorials can be done in both and differences between it and LW are explained.

3-0 out of 5 stars I EXPECTED MORE
ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK TRIES TO PUT THE READER IN A PRO LOGIC, I THINK THAT FAILS BECAUSE OF HIS BAD TACTIC.IT BEGINS WITH SOME BASIC INTRODUCTION TO LIGHTWAVE AND ISPIRE 3D (1 CHAPTER FOR SO HUGE PROGRAMS !!!) AND CONINUES WITH COMPLETE PARADIGMS IN THE OTHER CHAPTERS.THE WRITER ASSUMES YOU ARE A PRO, FAMILIAR WITH THE INTERFACE AND TECHNIQUES AND FORCES YOU TO BUILD A HOLE CASTLE (PLUGINS REQUIRED BUT MISSING) WHAT?????!!!!!.JUST IGNORE IT AND TRY ANOTHER BOOK OR ONLINE TUTORIAL.TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE (THE CASTLE AND OTHERS-IF YOU LIKE THE IDEA OF A CASTLE GO TO EUROPE) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Muy educativo
Siendo como soy un principiante sin mucho tiempo libre. Este libro te quitara todos los miedos con el programa. Te dara la valentia necesaria para ponerte a experimentar, y probar las diferentes herramientas.5-0 out of 5 stars Great starting point to learn Lightwave
Good one! This book guides you step by step on everything (Modeling, Layout, Rendering and many more). At first I thought that Lightwave was very complex but when I finish the book I found out that it's simple, very easy to work and you can do amazing things in no time. This book also serves as a reference resource once you're working with the software.I highly recommend this book to beginner-intermediate users. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good practise material
This book is quite staightforward and the examples in the tutorials - like modelling a simple canoe - are very useful for picking up basic skills. The tunnel fly-through tutorial is a godsend, as it finally explained to me in a clear way how to create a pre-set path for a camera to follow during an animation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Format too small
This is a quite clear book, at least in the writing, because its size seems to be too small to display the screenshots clearly. Add to that the fact that it is printed in black and white and the difficulty to read some images worsen, since they don't have the necessary contrast to resolve items that result in a very similar tone of gray when converted from color to B&W. To be fair I have to say that Tim has a nice writing style. His book has helped me to start to understand LW, which is a huge piece of software.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was OK
I mean that...it was an OK book. I learned some useful stuff but I would never give it five stars. As a newbie to LW I found 'Inside Lightwave' much better. There are a few more books out there I would think about getting before you get this one. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only useful for beginners
Being a fairly new Lightwave user, I pre-ordered this book.I also own all of the Desktop Images training DVDs for LW 7 as well as a few of Class on Demand's training DVDs.By the time the book arrived I'd been using Lightwave for only about 3 months and it was already useless.1-0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Work
The book seems well writen and I was really enjoying it until page 120.That's when the included CD is first called for use.I find that anything in LightWave format is not seen by my computer - a new Mac G4, duel processor with OSX 10.2.4.I was careful to read before ordering the book if Mac is supported. They say it is.I'll try it tomorrow on my PC, but my graphics machineis the Mac.If I can straighten this out I think I will highly rate the book.If not, well thenI'll stick with no or one star!5-0 out of 5 stars A good start
The Lightwave 7.5 Primer is a good book to introduce you to the Lightwave program. The thing I most enjoyed about the book was the quality of the tutorials. All files were easily found, and all the examples worked! This doesn't always happen with other books. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best 3d book I have bought.
I have spent a lot of money on 3d books in the past but this is the best by a distance, that I have bought. The head modeling tutorial in particular is just fantastic, I defy anyone to find a better modeling tutorial than this, its just brilliant. The really great thing is that the methods taught are easily transferable to other software packages and not just relevant to Lightwave. The only thing I would say is that if you are a beginner, prepare to work very hard, learning to make good 3d is tough, but if you are really prepared to do the hard work this book can take you a long way down the road. I would give it six out of five if I could !

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help
The book successfully demonstrates practical use of frequently used tools in addition to showing how to approach projects. It is great for beginners trying to learn the nuances of Lightwave. Although Dan could have saved a lot of trees by omitting the first chapter, the rest of the book has proved useful in learning the program. I would recommend it to everyone starting from ground zero as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars As with the previous Inside Lightwave Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource!
This book has proved invaluable resource for dealing with Ligthwave's rigging. Filled with great tips and examples, this book shows you clearly how to build efficient rigs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands Down...The Character RiggingBook
Until I read this book Rigging was always a challenge and something I avoided. This book clearly explains not only the buttons to click but the basic concepts needed for anyone that wants to rig. Then when you have mastered the basics he walks you thru complex, power, but easy to setup rigging setups.
