Editorial Review

Microsoft Access remains an important part of the Windows developer's environment, in that the doughty database management system represents a simple and relatively straightforward core for forms-based software modules. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ADO templates don't work (Ch 15)
This book is fairly decent, except that the template code for "Connecting to Databases with ADO" (Chapter 15) is riddled with errors. Most of this is probably due to problems with Access versions and configuration, but in any case, templates that don't work are frustrating and useless. There is absolutely no errata information for this book on the Wiley web site, and Wiley doesn't take inquiries, regardless of the notes in the front of the book.Find a different book for Client/Server study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction to VBA
Here is a solid introduction to programming in Access, including how to use some of the built-in features that make VBA easier to use.If you've been using Access to make forms and run quieries you should be able to pick up this book and start programming. Power Programming tells you how to create procedures and functions. The code isn't very useful by itself, but the book explains how things work so you should be able to write your own procedures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take the fear out of .NET
The book hits the sweet spot in terms of depth and detail. 5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and balanced and great read.
The McNeish book is an excellent treatment of the subject. I especially like the VFP developer slant which is really helpful.Beside that, the book is the best balance of thoroughness and conciseness of any .NET books I've read and I've read many. This should be read by non-VFP developers as well. The book is well designed as well. It's also nice that screen shots can actually be read unlike some contemporary computer books. This is not intended to be a "core reference" or a deep treatise on .NET architecture.

This particular book shows some promise w/ all the illustrations, but really falls short of my expectations. The descriptions of what's going on in each step are REALLY vague, and tend to be more confusing than helpful.4-0 out of 5 stars Screen Shots are great for explaining Access Features

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the Basics
This introduction to Access has a few things to recommend it but, in my mind, they are not enough. As this series is prone to do, it does provide a step by step introduction to using the program and covers basic features. The illustrations are slightly better than average in that they are in color and are large enough to actually examine closely. The book also comes with a disk with all of the needed files for tutorials that build upon each other. These are all well done but it is not enough.
1-0 out of 5 stars A very bad book
I was very disappointed by this book. The book itself is quite visually pleasing - nice color screen shots throughout. Also the CD-rom that comes with the book has a new database for each progressive example, so if you mess something up, you can get a fresh copy of the database with the exercise done to work on the next exercise.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good and Versatile
This book covers all the basics of Access in a format that is easy to understand. It does require familiarity with Windows, but most people looking for this level of understanding in Access have that already. The CDRom files makes the lessons easy and informative. It is written for XP, but I have 2000 Professional, and with a few exceptions, I could do all the lessons in the book. If you are going to use the book for a different version than XP, though, you really have to have a working knowledge of Access already. All in all, a good resource that I believe will serve me well in the future as a reference book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok for beginning but not for using as reference manual ...
The author takes you by the hand from the beginning of the book to the very end. Sometimes he stops and start discussing about some trivial facts, e.g "Why it is better to sort a contact list by last name rather than by first name ...".

1-0 out of 5 stars FileMaker Pro 6 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh: Visual Q
Don't waste your money on this one. Although titled "Advanced" it assumes the reader is a total idiot and absolutely unfamiliar with FileMaker. Steps are spelled out so painfully click by click that it is impossible to follow what is being explained. The screen shots are too small to be legible. A real waste of money and printing paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
Wow!
2-0 out of 5 stars Only Somewhat Helpful in Mastering FileMaker
I've purchased numerous Peachpit Visual Quickbooks. Most of them are excellent. This one, however, is deficient is some respects. The most glaring problem is the puny size of the screen shots--you need a magnifying glass to see them! Also, the book is not coherent; it starts off with a fine concept for a school course/student/instructor database, but then doesn't work with this example throughout the book. There are no sample files on CD or diskette or on a Web site that I can find. The only saving grace is that the price of the book is reasonable, and you may pick up a few useful tips.Let's hope the version for FileMaker 7 is better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Used is an excellent buy!
Although I have not read through the book completely, I have found that what I have read to be most informative and helpful to myself as well as the adults I teach Office 2000 to.3-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, but of possible use...
I got this mainly for the information about Outlook and while the book is by no means useless, it is also disappointing. It's not consistent with Outlook 2000 Corporate or Workgroup (it can still help but the examples andscreenshots are not entirely appropriate) and there are errors in the book,as well as downright bad English.Still, if you can get it cheap or forfree, it might be worth something. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Writen!
Found this book to be a great help with learning FileMaker, Jonathan Star has a real talent for teaching. Each chapter gives a tutorial that is easy to follow and clearly explained. I highly recomend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for learning FileMaker
Mr. Stars is a gifted writer and teacher. This is one of the very best technical books I have ever read. It read easily, it was packed with practical information and I actually did learn from it. If you don't know FileMaker and you want to learn it, this book is for you.If you already know FileMaker and want to learn advanced techniques, look for another book.I can't give it 5 stars because: 1) the last few chapters are like filler -- there's nothing in them that I couldn't have gleaned from the FileMaker manuals; 2) the CD-ROM adds no value.

5-0 out of 5 stars STOP -- look no further!
Although FileMaker Pro (FMP) -- the best-selling free-standing data management program -- provides a truly excellent instruction manual, practical tutorials, and the best Help features around (take note Microsoft!), the program has so many features and possibilities that a structured learning experience can only help you move up smoother and faster. I've tried other FMP books, but was disappointed by their slap-dash make-over compilation of unstructured tips and tricks (see my other review).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner Book
Seeing that you can get a used copy of this book for as little as $3.20 I would say that it is definitely worth that.It is a beginner book, but I still found it to be useful.I have been programming for several years and a friend wanted me to take at this book. There were several things the book explained very well and helped me to better understand even after using Access for years. It brings lots of things down to layman terms. If you are not wanting to be a power user, it is probably a decent book to purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars Really basic, weak for $
The other dummies books I have read have been much more informative than this one. I was brand spanking new to access and it helped a little, but as soon as I needed to really do things with any power to them, the book stopped short. It is a brief intro into a wide variety of topics, it barely scratches the surface, I admit I am disappointed. Maybe not a bad place to start if you can pick it up fropm a used book store, and definitely don't plan on it being the only book you use for access, no matter how basic your work with access is.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the jokes
I love the jokes and I found the book very informative. In case you're not aware, ALL the "For Dummies" books have jokes. That's part of the reason I buy and use them. When everything else is going wrong, all I have to do is look at one of these books and my whole attitude goes from glum to giggly. If you can't understand that, then don't buy this book. ...
