1-0 out of 5 stars Purchase at your own risk
I should have known better when I read a review that started with "this book is a work of art..."Are reviews like this written by someone close to the authors??Needless to say, I purchased both the desktop edition and the enterprise edition and have found myself turning to other Access references instead (or searching Google Groups for info).
1-0 out of 5 stars Probably good if read like a novel
This book is a paradox. It's huge and filled with lots of information. It weighs a lot and has lots of pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
This book is simply fabulous. In fact both Volumes 1 and 2 are brilliant. If you need accurate, detailed, and to-the-point information about Microsoft Access then this is the only way to go.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "A 1"
Comprehensive. A good resource to have in the collection of books.
5-0 out of 5 stars If I had bought this book first I'd have save a lot of money
I have a lot of SQL server books. Everything from SQL Server 2000 for Dummies up to SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Programming. And many times none of these books had what I needed. Then I would turn to this book. I was using VB.Net, so I figured this book wouldn't apply, but I was wrong. Even if you are not using Access, this book explains SQL Server the right way. Chipman and Baron offer simple but thorough explanations and samples of the things you actually need to know as a developer. They don't spend a lot of time on the things a SQL Server DBA might need to know that a coder would not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Appears to be an excellent book.
This answers a lot of programmer level questions about using MS-Access with SQL Server. It describes the limits and penalties when going the various routes. The book is quite clear in its descriptions. It would make a good addition to any Access programmer's collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for MsAccess programmers
Daily employed subjects, very good explaineds and an useful INDEX to found what you need. That is aplicable to the whole serie "Access xxx Developer's Handbook". I own all of them!. The best books about MsAccess.

5-0 out of 5 stars DAO/ADO Why didn't they use some different letters?
Microsoft had the guts to simply stop DAO code in place(3.6 is it) and it was such an ugly mess to use to write client server applications that its just as well. Now there's ADO, which is like RDO (which you could onlyget by buying Visual Basic, Professional Edition, but now RDO is no longerbeing developed or improved), and ADO is also like PowerBuilder in itssyntax and function, primarily in using a universal and extremely flexibleconnection object to link to the data source.5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Enterprise Book Ever!
Anyone who's ever purchased one of the Access Developer Handbooks will find this incredible Enterprise Edition is a must have! The code samples on the CD alone are worth the cost of the book. The writing is clear and thorough and the samples are excellent and (so far) bug free.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How not to be an Access dummy
First, it is important to realize what this book is not.It is not a complete Access reference book.It will not teach you database theory and all aspects of data normalization. It does not cover advanced techniques such as VBA programming, the ADO object model or using the Windows API.
5-0 out of 5 stars Access Forms & Reports for Dummies
I have shelves filled with computer "How To" type books and in the past have stayed away from the "Dummies" series thinking them to be a bit too simplified. However, recently I needed to get up to speed with Microsoft's Access, specifically in order to prepare reports. So I bought Access Forms & Reports for Dummies by Brian Underdahl.I found this book to be a refreshing diversion from the normally dry and sometimes obtuse computer books of the past.Mr. Underdahl has a colloquial writing style which is not only entertaining but highly informative. Within a very short period of time I found myself successfully creating Forms and Reports which made my work go much smoother.I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to understand Access and quickly create Forms and Reports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Access Far More Useful
Access is, of course, a database program. Unlike many of the big database programs, it is closely integrated with a quite sophisticated front end package to enable the creation of easy to use input forms and quite good looking reports to take the data stored in the database and present it to the outside world in a clear and useful format.

5-0 out of 5 stars MS Access Database Workgroup Security.
A good book will find the reader.I would like to thank Mr. Robinson for a well written read.Besides all the other things I have in my life to do I was able to finish his work in about two weeks.I have read all the other reviews; there is nothing I can add.I can however tell you that if you are into Access database (and you know if you are) then this book is an imperative.I have had many books on Access database pass my way, nothing compares with Mr. Robinsons' book on security and protection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for MS Access Security
This has got to be the best MS Access resource book that I have purchased.Like others, I have found MS Access security hard to understand but with Gary Robinson's help I am now getting a grasp on how I can keep sensitive data secure. The book is aimed at those who are new to security as well as those with experience. Also, the downloable database, with forms and code that you can easily use in your own applications, is a real time saver.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best book for MS Access Security
This is the perfect book for MS Access Security since it caters to all levels of users and is extremely easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still useful after all this time
Even though this book was written for an earlier version of FileMaker, I am glad to have it in my library as a reference. It is readable and many of the principles described apply to any database, regardless of version.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not in script writing
Though it does give elaborate a bit on most ins-and-outs of Filemaker Pro 6, it doesn't go much into scrip wrtiting: a few lines, a few examples, not much 'general' syntax, and all its parameters. Anybody knows of a book that just teach you about (Filemaker Pro 6) scripts and scripwriting? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good entry level book
This book is a very good reference manual.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference
I needed a reference for work, one that was easy enough for a my co-worker, a non-programmer, to use and yet detailed enough to be useful for me. I browsed through most of the current versions of Access references, checking the details, coverage and examples for something that might meet my requirements. While it is impossible for any book to be everything to everyone, this one comes very close to meeting my needs with regard to Access. 5-0 out of 5 stars Response to unfair criticism
The person who gave this book a poor rating obviously didn't read it, or doesn't know how to read. This is an excellent book, very thorough in its coverage, and well-organized. It even has a reference guide on the cd that comes with it, which is much easier than the book to take with you on the go. I have tried learing Access using another book that covers all the programs that come with Office XP, but it was frustrating in its meager coverage of important points. The ONLY improvement that could be made to this book is a more detailed chapter on creating relationships and a more thorough discussion of designing databases. However, in its practical discussion of creating the database and searching through it, it is superb. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing for a beginner
I'm a Crystal Reports beginner. This book is not useful at all. You can easily create a simple report by following the steps described in first two chapters. However, after that,I was totally lost. The book describes a lot of things available in Crystal Reports without following samples. There are samples available for each chapter on the web. However, there was no connection between the samples and the book. I don't how the sample reports were produced and I just couldn't learn how to create reports by just reading the book. I'm very disappointed at the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for the Non-Beginner
Here are the good points:5-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to learn Crystal Reports 9 and this was excellent
Already a SQL, VB, and .NET programmer, I wanted o add CR to the repetoire. I picked this book up from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised with the depth and descriptions. If you're looking for a book that gives you the low down on CR, pick this one up. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the light hearted
First, I own this book and love it.It is a nuts and bolts book.It literally shows the ins and outs of the program. It is technical and show the technical pieces of the program. It is not for design, Viescas wrote a book on design which I have "Building Microsoft Access Applications."It is not for absolute beginers. There is a section on visual basic which is good and explanitory but VB is a beast of it's own and I'm learning that it must be tackled by itself.I concider myself a novice and these book are helpful to me.

2-0 out of 5 stars No practical answers!
Almost all instructions in the book are based on the example database supplied with the CD. It's almost impossible to read the book without referencing to the example database. It is badly written, too generic and it offers no answers to practical questions. It's a book for beginners, but the title pretends otherwise. Here is just a random sentence from the book that illustrates how bad it is (and there are MANY of these)... Page 289; "As discussed earlier in this chapter, you know that to solve certain types of problems you must first build one query to define a subset of data from your tables and then use that query as input to another query to get the final answer". Come ON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent In-Depth Resource
This book could not be more comprehensive. If you need to go deep and want to have a paper-based book to do it with (versus online help/tutorals), this is the one to have on your desk. A chapter each week will help you me much more productive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for my users
I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Access 2003 Quick Steps - newbies impression
I've been "Access adverse" even though it would be good to know and use it for work. I found this particular book quite helpful and easy to follow due to a lot of graphics, a step by step approach and assumption that the user is starting with little or no previous knowledge. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good guide for beginners
This book would be good for beginners. This book, unfortunately, focuses too much on basic computer functions and doesn't give enough detail about building databases using Access. It is easy to read and follow, but entirely too basic for most users, especially those already familiar with Access and what it can do.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful at all
I normally like the Dummies series of books, but even for a Dummies book, this was just far too elementary. The first 65 pages (4 chapters) are a complete waste, as they are written for people who have never used a computer before. As a whole, this book only teaches you about 5-10% of what Access can do - both overall and on each of the very few topics that it does touch upon. There are constant annoying references to how "nerdy" any relevant information is.Instead of explaining this "nerdy" info in an easy to understand matter (which I thought was the point of a Dummies book), the author just mentions that it exists, makes a bad joke about it, and then ignores it and moves on.
2-0 out of 5 stars Complicated
I bought this book because I've always been satisfied with the Dummies series.I consider myself fairly proficient with many of the MICROSOFT program (Word, Excel, Power Point), and I even took an Access class several years ago. With that in mind, I thought I'd have no problem picking up some of the basics of the program with the help of this book.Boy, was I wrong. The book is full "rules" in a list and directions that use vocabulary with which most new users of Access would be unfamiliar. I haven't finished it yet, but thus far, the author doesn't give you any opportunities to practice the information she's giving you.Any teacher knows that without doing something that you've been taught, you haven't really learned it.I remember years ago, even the manuals that came with the computers had exercises for readers to practice each newly taught skill. Here, in a book that's supposed to be teaching us a new and complex program, there are no opportunities to determine whether you've really understood a concept.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Weak on Development Details
This book is not titled particularly well.It does present a good amount of detail about how to develop a report within Crystal Reports--but it does not do a very good job of telling you how to embed those reports into other applications, or how to call the reports from other applications. In other words, if it was titled something like 'Crystal Reports Reference' it would be a pretty good book--but it's definitely not going to serve up the kind of hard-hitting developmental details you would expect for a "developer's guide".
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Crystal Reports is one of the most ubiquitous software packages for turning raw data into useful information.Whether it is a stand alone package or the reporting portion of another program it seems everyone is either using canned reports or writing custom ones with Crystal Reports at some point. In this book the author takes the reader through the process of creating the various types of reports available with Crystal Reports.Starting with the most basic reports that simply list the results he quickly moves the reader through sorting, totaling, grouping, and multiple other ways of organizing your data. From there he moves the reader through the creation of much more complex reports including consolidated ones with multiple sub-reports.In this book you will find everything you need to learn how to use Crystal Reports to its fullest potential including how to integrate it into your own programs.I wish I had had this book available to me when I was first learning Crystal Reports.Crystal Reports XI for Developers is highly recommended.I had no problem integrating a reporting module into a VB program that pulled data from a dbase database.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book - It is a waste of money
This book is supposed to be for developers. It's supposed to help you learn how to integrate Crystal XI with your application. DO NOT USE THIS BOOK! It is totally wrong when it comes to telling you how to do it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Great
As programming books this one did actually have something I could use and gave an example of how to use it.It even gave the code.......what a thought. Most programming books offer little more than lots of pages of "stuff" you cannot use.The book took you through the process of how to code a "Message" box. This one actually did have a few things one could use.Not a good beginner book, intermediate to advanced. This book coded you through modules.....good idea. The one thing I didn't like about the book was it did not go deep enough into data base design or normalization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool book
I am a old hand on Access programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Beginner to VBA
Ok, if you just know a little about coding, not much, but DO know how Access works, esp. Macro's, then this book is a GREAT introduction to VBA.I'm hyper-critical about tech books, they have to be clear, concise and never assume anything about the reader's skill level. Also, they have to stay on track and introduce concepts only when they've been given a good prior foundation. This book does an excellent job!!But, remember, this book is just about VBA, not about using Access.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe a good place to start but no what I was looking for.
Seemed ok at first, nice and easy, but quickly turned into just an introduction. The forms chapter was at the end of the book and very short. Forms are what access is all about. I was disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Quick Way to Start Learning VBA
Some years ago Microsoft created a specialized programming language to allow extensions to be made to the normal modes of operation allowed in their Office suite. The language was fairly well thought out to be applicable to applications as different as word processing, spreadsheets or data bases. They called it Visual Basic for Applications shortened to VBA. It has worked remarkable well. Down theough the years there have been relatively few changes to VBA.
