5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it sets out to do...
I bought this book when I had to teach myself how to create basic reports via CR9. It got me through that painlessly, and saved my company the $1,000 they would have had to pay a live instructor for Report Design I.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I hoped.
The book seemed to be geared towards Crystal 9 and not Crystal XI.I had purchased XI at the same time. The book was not a large book and half of it contained an extensive glossary of terms. Very unneccessary as this information is found in many places.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good tips - but lots of repetition
The author of this book is also the author of the various editions of the standard 'Crystal Reports: The Complete Guide' book. This book tries to pick up where that book left off--in other words, this book tries to be a resource for intermediate to advanced users.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very valuable

3-0 out of 5 stars I don't like this book.
I think the reviews on this book are overstated.I have another book about Access which proved to be more helpful.I am not keeping this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Special Edition:Special
This book, along with many of the other books in the Special Edition collection have earned my attention and purchases over the past 3-4 years.I have learned just about everything I know about building websites, making up databases, word processing, etc. either online or through books related to specific software packages. When I went to develop my first database in MS Access 2000, I bought every single book on the topic.Very few times, did I discover myself finding the information I needed in other books except the Special Edition one.3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.
Despite the back of the book as suggested for Beginning to Advanced students, this is not something I would wholeheartedly recommend. It is more for the Intermediate and above.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FMPRO8Createdbfile
Easy to follow, excellent examples. Shows how to create the relational files and the portals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starter for first time users
This is an excellent, concise, self paced beginners tutorial on Filemaker 8.It gets you started immediately in the development of a database (investment minder) covering the main features of the program. It is not a detailed tutorial covering all the aspects of Filemaker 8.Still you will come away with a good enough understanding of the program's basics to create a database of your own design. My only real criticism of the book is that I would have liked to have had more illustrations showing what instructions should actually look like once entered on the computer screen. This is especially the case in the section dealing with scripts. However this is a minor issue in an otherwise excellent book. I would highly recommend the book to anyone wanting to learn the basics of Filemaker 8. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks consistency in explanations...
I agreed with many of the prior reviewers when they stated that the book doesn't cover many options and in some examples they are covered completely and other examples jump around and lack the same "follow through" in the lesson as the prior examples.I also found that included screenshots were not consistent as well.Often when I was expecting a screenshot because the explanation given in the text was not so clear, no screenshot existed. In Chapter 3 the author has you use an example from Chapter 2 and in the SubReports section, the correct example could not be found.I found the example stated in the text but it did not contain the example shown in the screenshot.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a 2nd Edition
The book is a reasonable resource.
2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not good
Actually I purchased this book few months back. Today my opinion is this book is not upto the mark. It is only blah blah blah. No topic is covered in detail. I needed to search web for many things after reading this book. He is nowhere discussing crystal reports SDKs in detail. We wont get any overview of crystal reports SDKs provided with visual studio.

2-0 out of 5 stars Covers a lot, but "complete"? No.
When I bought this book, I thought this would have everything I would need. Wrong. The book is good for taking the exam, because it covers everything in just enough detail. However, if you want to do a lot of advanced operations like using cross-tab queries, Visual Basic, dynamic reports, etc, etc.. the book pretty much leaves you out in the cold.
1-0 out of 5 stars This book is useless
I can figure most things out by example, but this book's examples are worthless. You would think a 1319 page book would have the space to give some working examples rather than code snipets taken out of context.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for the budding database developer.
After perusing the other reviews I reached this conclusion: (which makes sense) everyone has reviewed this book from their own perspective. As will I.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't use it enough!
This book has been all that I hoped it would be.I use it as a tutorial one day and a reference the next.I was a beginner Access VBA developer and now with this book I have become much more comfortable around VBA.So much more comfortable that I have developed 4 financial Access applications that are going to be used by multiple departments.I recently picked up the Access 2002 Developer's Handbook Set which is a little more advanced but I keep coming back to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars With a little study and committment
I started using Access a few years ago as an adjunct of Microsoft Office, creating simple databases for my Christmas card list and such. Then about a year ago, because of work, I had the opportunity to dig deeper.Where to start?I began with Alison Balter's Mastering Access 2002 Desktop Development, a frustrating and disorganised tome that seemed to be missing all of the secret handshakes, signals and knowledge I longed for to unlock the supposed power of Microsoft Access.Every time it appeared Ms. Balter was going to get to the actual point and impart the wisdom I was seeking...she swiftly moved on to another topic. The book didn't even serve to help me clarify the mind-boggling vocabulary necessary to describe and understand the application. To me, Ms. Balter seemed like somebody whom, if they possessed a lot of knowledge, wasn't giving any of it away.A job change took care of my deadline but I was still intrigued and inherited a larger project when I committed myself to writing a custom database application for my partner's administrative needs.I needed help and serious instruction to achieve the application designs I had in my head.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the hands on learner
I am in chapter 3 and have decided to set the book aside and look for a more hands on approach. It's my learning style.I learn a lot more from a technical book (on a new topic) where you work through more examples.Once I have gone through a book with more examples I suspect that the theoretical approach will be more meaningful.I will come back to read this book at a later time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Self Study Guide

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and well-presented
Beverly Voth has written the "bible" on FileMaker Pro/XML integration. She takes what can be a daunting subject, and leads you logically from topic to topic, with demo files and plenty of code examples to illustrate her points. From the eight-page table of contents (in outline form) to the detailed index, this book is exceptionally well laid out, and has plenty to offer both the novice and the veteran FileMaker developer. This book does not suffer from the "we didn't have time, budget or inclination to proofread adequately" syndrome that plagues so many computer books these days... it flows beautifully, and I have yet to find a single typo.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Word
The release of Beverly Voth's Guide is well worth our wait. While exhaustive, the writing is clear and not exhausting. She has given us the definitive textbook on this thorny, difficult subject, starting at the outside and working in. While breaking apart the various layers into edible morsels, Ms. Voth does not sugar-coat the complexities of her subject; she simply makes them disappear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Filemaker Pro 6 Developer's Guide to Xml/Xsl
I've read many books regarding FileMaker Pro. In the few that mention XML, it is an afterthought. Beverly Voth's book is in depth, detailed and formatted in a manner that makes it readable, understandable and usable to both novice and professional developers.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough info...
I bought this book about a couple of months ago and I need an easier way to do my reports and faster. They did not show anything until I went online and found "parameters", did not have anything about "parameters", in the book.Book is good for basic use.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is An Absolute Waste Of Time To Read!!!
This book will give you boring definitions, but it doesn't really go into anything why I needed to learn how to do.There are way to many "Ask someone who is computer literate to help you with this."There was one explanation that said the topic is too difficult to explain and I should trade some "homemade cookies" to someone that will show me how to fix the problem.I'm not kidding look it up for yourself if you don't believe me.I don't know what audience this book is for but it seems to me that it was written for computer illerate people that will not get any answers anyway. Its more like "This stuff is too tough for you to learn, tell you what go have a cookie."I like to tell the author to go do something else...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
...My user level: beginner to intermediate (I already know how to build basic tables, forms, queries, trying to step up into the world of more complex relationships, reports, etc). I was pretty disappointed with this book: cut out the "for dummies" fluff and what's left are simple instructions on how to use the built in wizards. When I looked for example, for information on form controls in the index, I found they weren't even referenced. The front cover "cheat sheet" is just a listing of telephone and online tech support phone numbers (which you will end up shelling out $$ to call) and web addresses.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
Probably the readers who rated the book with 1 star did not know that they could download the electronic format of the book from hentzenwerke.com.
1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
This is nothing but gibberish. More like someone talking about what they know about VFPro in the vaguest of terms. There is no chapter on, 'how to do your first program' or whatever as refered to by one reviewer. I wonder if those 4 star reviewers where paid pumpers or dear friends of the author. I will admit that I did not get past page 54 of the book. That is where I stopped because I found nothing of relevance that would help me improve my skills as a VFP programmer. I consider myself an advanced beginner, so if you are a beginner, do not even attempt to read this book. There is very little continuity, jumping from one useless tip to another without any real usefull or pratical application. It is as if it was put together haphazzardly from a pile of notes, jumpled in with the laundry list.
1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book
This book is a complete waste of money. The book doesn't contain ANY relevant information. The authors just goes on and on about NOTHING. They have got to be payed by the number of words, why else put irrelevant quotes on every second or third page?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Access, again
I hadn't worked in Access for more than a decade.Suddenly I was faced with supporting a database I knew nothing about. The Inside Out book and CD really helped get me familiar with the product again. All the screens shots and disussion of how the product worked helped me get up to speed in no time.I would not hesitate to buy another bool by Ms. Feddema.

1-0 out of 5 stars Into the bin
Don't think of spending money on this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars An acceptable companion volume
Rarely will you find one computer book that meets the majority of your needs.Access Inside&Out is no exception to this.I spent a day selectively weeding out all the various Access 2002 volumes available at Borders Bookstore.I looked for selective criteria such as complex expression usage, applied object properties, and general reader presentation/learning flow. The most organized, in-depth, and helpful I found were Access Inside & Out and Access 2002 Bible.Where one book skips over any area you're weak in the other typically goes into thorough detail and vice versus. The other honorable mention is QUE/Jennings Special Edition Using MS Access 2002.None are stand-alone volumes for either direct reference or learning the intricacies of Access yet together you should be well armed to accomplish some intermediate Access goals.Helen's website (www.helenfeddema.com) may help you determine whether to use her book as one of your Access companion books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written and presented...
This is my second book on Access. I find this book to be very well written. Many users are complaining about examples that don't work. I think this is intentional on the part of the author. I look at it as an impromptu test. Any good instructor will give you periodic exams.Look at the examples that don't work as exams.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Book
This could have been a good book, but Query by Form does not work as described in the book.Page 395indicates that you can choose the Remove Filter/Sort command in the Records menu... and all records are displayed. Not true. Also, automated filter removal using macros (chapter 9) and DoCmd(chapter 18) do not work. You cannot drag Customer ID from the field list to the form, it is not in the list using the database on the supplied CD.Too many errors and omissions to be a usefull book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book for desperate times
This is not a good book to cuddle up with. I am a not-so-newbie with Access and when I had a difficult problem it was this book that saved me.There are two kinds of difficulties I have with Access: the obviousproblems whose answers are staring me in the face, and the non-intuitivenit-picky boring problems that last for a week. This book is for thesecond type of problem ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Dittos on the Down Side
As to what others have said:
3-0 out of 5 stars Best bookI found out there for a novice but poorly edited
I am a beginner at Crystal Reports. I bought two other books before this one and I was left frustrated by both of them. I bought this book and within one day I was at least able create and edit reports. But this book is so poorly edited its laughable. It makes learning from this book a lot more difficult than it has to be. The book was obviously written by several different authors, some more capable than others. One chapter I am understanding everything on the first read and the next I am completely befuddledhaving to reread sections four or five times and finally figuring out what to do on my own. I get the sense that the book was hastily rehashed for this software version and the reader is at times left trying to make sense of instructions for earlier releases. There is hardly any sense of continutiy between the chapters and some exercises refer to prodedures that are yet to be covered. The book is rife with typos and it constantly references illustrations that are located pages away. Whats up with that? It wasn't to save paper. If the redundant paragraphs and unnecessarily wordy sentences were properly edited we could have saved a tree per book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book!!!
I'm an IT graduate and am very accustomed to reading technical resources. This book is one of the worst I have seen. The screen caps that are referenced in the text are hardly ever on the same page as the text. Lots of the descriptions about radio buttons are a twist on the descriptions given by the environment. Clumsy book. I don't know what to recommend as replacement, but not worth the $50 I bought it for. I wouldn't even pay $25 for it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness...
Sooo much better than the text I tried first (Idiot's Guide to Access). The entire book is much more simplified. TRULY a beginner's guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A non IT person's review
I am a doctor and I have been reading various books on access. I realise that access is a very complicated application development database program. It is easy to come to gripes with word, excel and for a non IT person like me, it is very easy to get going with these programs soon. But to do justice to access for your own needs, ithas taken me alot of time to get going and I have lot of way to go yet. But this book gives you the confidence and a grip on the subjet fora beginner and the authors rightly put it on their cover page. 'ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR ACCESS EXPERIENCE NECESSARY'
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one you want
Recently I had to pick up Access very quickly since the temp assignment I got was nothing but. After spending nearly half an hour comparing Access books in a local bookstore I decided to get this one and the Microsoft official guide. While the Microsoft guide I plan on returning, this book has been a gem and truly got me up to speed from knowing nothing at all.I skimmed through the first 100 pages in about an hour, referencing the computer in front of me to see what went where, and then the next day I was able with the book's help to design a few reports and a rudimentary database for my boss. The next day forms, more reports, queries, and relationships were added into the mix and I've now, about a week later, made it through most of the book and have a real database up and running.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars "Crash" on page 10
After downloading the CheckWriter DB from Wiley's companion site for the book Access 2003 Programming Weekend Crash Course, I try and try but it will not run; it cannot find the linked files; and the "tools" for reference and linking are greyed out. So we "Crash" on page 10. How can the author claim he is teaching us Professional Techniques when his program will not run out of the box?

4-0 out of 5 stars Take your time; as much as you need
The authors set themselves an ambitious remit. Can they actually teach you Access in 15 hours? They motivate this with a scenario of a weekend in which you have to learn, starting on Friday night, and going to Sunday afternoon. The time is divided into 6 parts, one on Friday, 3 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday. Each part has several sessions (=lessons) of half an hour each. A novel approach, at least to me. Somewhat of a role-playing setup.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book to get up and running on Access 03 Programming
I bought this book to go along with Access 2003 Bible - also written by Cary Prague.I did some of the tutorials in this book and used the Bible to help expand my knowledge and found it very useful. This book gave me the first layer into Access Programming, but I needed it to get me going! ...
