A Complete Meal
The one aspect of this book that I like very much that is not covered by other comments is that the revised nature of Filemaker's different forms (Mobile, Server and Pro) are well covered as well as is the change made by FilemMaker to the basic underlying methodology of updating a record. I have used it to build a very large workflow automation system for a company and find it unmissable

I Can See Clearly Now . . .
Although I've been using FileMaker since 1996, to me the difference between version6 and 7 is a paradigm shift. As in the previously oustanding Special Edition FileMaker books by Que, this one by Chris Moyer and others is steller. How? well, in content and exposition. Although there are a FEW idiosynchroncies, they have been corrected by on-line updates.
It's why we buy computer books!
Like another reviewer suggested, let's agree that no single book is ever "the only book you'll ever need". (I for one, wish authors/publishers would stop making that claim).However, if you can only buy one, this is it!As we know, FileMaker Inc just released version 8.So why buy a book on version 7?Because 8 is nearly identical to 7 with a few additional bells & whistles and minor enhancements, and because with minimal gap, this book will prepare you for either version.So whether you're still on version 7, considering upgrading or made the move to 8, I believe Special Edition Using FileMaker 7 is a solid investment.

Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies
The book (Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies)is like new. I could hardly believe when I open the package and saw the book. The speed at when it reaches me wasalso excellent. I would encourage anyone to conduct business it them.

Really for "Dummies"
As others have said, this book is very very basic--perhaps because it attempts to cover all the components of the Office 2000 suite in less than 500 pages. If you have even basic familiarity with the program you're using, it won't be much help. For example, I turned to this book to see if I could discover some of the more sophisticated features of Outlook email, and was disappointed. It's pitched to the "how to send a message" crowd. But, I also am trying Excel for the first time, and it helped a lot just to be able to easily find how to enter a basic formula. Bottom line is, once you start using a program regularly you'll graduate from this manual pretty quickly.

Turned out to be less than useful
I got this book when I entered the working world out of university- aside from providing a few very basic tips on how to format printing and what not, there is not much to this book that is practically useful. Read more

Most Excellent Book
I have many books on Visual Basic for Applications, none of them explain the concept like this one does.Mr. Evan Callahan breaks things down in laymans terms.I have learned and accomplished more using his book than any I own.I will not buy books written by other authors-Mr. Evan Callahan has all of my business from this day forward.Hat's off Mr. Callahan and am looking forward to a 2003 visual basic for applications.

Excellent for Beginners
So you have created your Access database and have exhausted every wizard and control that you can use without actually coding. You still need a little something, but aren't sure how to get a little (or a lot) more out of Access - then this is the book for you. Very Good Beginner's Book
This book helped me a lot. I was at the point where I knew the basics of Access, but nothing about writing code. This book is excellent for taking you by the hand and helping you to start learning VBA. Another feature I really like is that the examples are examples that you are likely to find useful for the application you are developing. So I was able to got a very practical use out of this book (the Access 97 version is very similar).Read more

It'll get you there, eventually, sort of.
MOST of this book except for exercise 2 in chapter 1 which uses PivotCharts as well as the previously added PivotTables.The instructions are unclear about several points having to do with the fact that they seem to want you to copy both from their instructions and from their illustrations and the two are mixed and switch from one place to the othe with little warning.I found this inconsistancy an unneeded source ofpotential confusion.Still, it does layout the basic operation of Access.I'm only on Chapter 2 but I hope they later explain how to filter form field inputs ourselves instead of just looking at the ones they already did for us.They act like the ability to filter is some big deal and not a basic function, I don't need a sales pitch I need instructuions.I skipped lots of those exercises.They also fail to indicate where buttons (Query butons aren't indicated in any illustrations) are then they tell you to use it.I'm still not sure which query button they are referring to most of the time. ... Great Book - Easy to Use
I used this book as an outside source when taking a class that used another textbook. It made the class projects much easier because it is designed to be used keystroke by keystroke.

Defective product
I purchased the book new. It was missing pages 273-304. McGraw Hill customer "service" refused to do anything about it. If you buy one, examine it closely.

Some of the topics are not covered thoroughly
Brought this book based on its 4/5 star rating -- was disappointed.I am not an Access newbie and have some programming experience.At times, the book and its example are hard to follow.Many capters are not covered thoroughly.A collogue of mine also finds this book lacking its depth.The book does not live-up to its title.

Beyond Intermediate user
This book assumes that you have prior knowledge of Access and with that takes you further into advanced database design.Well written, great and clear examples throughout the book.Not only are you expanding your Access knowledge, you're also motivated to apply the learning into daily use.Great book! ... Steve's review of Brown's Access VBA Programming
Breadth of coverage was great, but I felt it lacked enough good lengthier program examples. A case study (small application example) or 2 would have been nice. Book is terse and well-written and organized.

A Good Introduction
My programming skills are minor and predate Windows as the main operating system in use. I know a few basic principles but have never been a "programmer". This book will not make me one but it goes a long way towards giving me the skills to reacquire some basic competency.
For beginning (not experienced) programmers
The 1st half gives you a quick and sparce overview of what you can do without VBA.It spends lots of time interducing the reader to database design, queries, forms, and tables.If you have any idea what any of these are, you will get nothing out of the 1st half of the book. Read more

This book is amazing
I purchased Web Connection from west-wind.com and was very excited about the possibilities, however I knew very little about how the web worked, and I made many mistakes. Up and Running In the First 4 Chapters!
This book is extremely timely for me. I have a WC web site for my business, and the SSL appendix alone is worth the price of the book. I really liked how the entire development process was summarized in the first 4 chapters so developers can get an immediate sense of accomplishment before they get into the details in the later chapters. I just purchased this book three weeks ago and I must say it is the most thorough and solid books I have ever used. I first heard of these books through CDI College when I was doing some upgrading of my Office skills last June, and have since taken a real interest in learning more about how Access 2002 operates. From the tutorials to the lab assigments and throughout this book, it can only enhance your skills in this once intimidating database program. I have used the Step by Step Access book as well but this Comprehensive Access 2002 takes the cake! Thanks for all your efforst, New Perspectives! Great Achievement
Mr. Pinter is definitively a great person, but most important, he is a great Programmer. He doesn't like to be called as a "consultant" or "another complicated word", sometimes used in this industry. Written for a programmer, targeted to programmers, this book is certainly a huge success in terms of conceptual clarity.
Getting up to speed in the .NET world

But, I don't have Rational Rose...
Overall pretty good book, I pretty much read it cover-to-cover over a two day period.However, my expectations were a bit high after reading all the other reviews on this site.First of all, his description of the Component Gallery totally lost me.More importantly, from chapter 12 on, the author elects to assume that everyone has access to a ... piece of software called Rational Rose to design an OOP app.This disappointed me, I would have preferred to have things explained in a way that I could follow along with the tools I have as a VFP developer.

If there's one book to buy this is it!
When was the last time you picked up a book and couldn't put it down? Markus Egger's "Advanced Object Oriented Programming with Visual FoxPro 6.0" is such a book. He covered everything I needed to know. He covered the fundamentals (a short review of terms), given clear explanations to everyday problems and demonstrated how objects are used in real world designs. Absolutely the best book for cutting your teeth in OOP/VFP6!
This is probably the best book that I have ever purchased for learning the real nuts and bolts on Visual FoxPro's OOP capabilities and the tools available in it.I encourage both new and seasoned programmers in Visual FoxPro to BUY THIS BOOK!!.I don't think you'll find a better one out there.The way Markus covers the FFCs and other advanced topics is great!!!It is hard to describe in 100 words or less how valuable this book is. ... Very Good Book For Beginners
This is a "Teach Yourself" book and as such is very good for beginners. I think this book does an excellent job of clearly explaining how to use Crystal Reports 9 to people who are new to this product. Here are the things that I found really helpful about this book:
Good only on one system....
This item does not work for me. As a mobile consultant I need to access the e-book on my laptop, at home and in the office.I am unable to use the product as intended. In the future, I will stick with printed material. E-Books do not work for technical reference materials!

Comlete waste
I am new to Crystal reports but have advanced skills with computers. I have mastered Autocad and program in 3 languages. I tried to use Crytal reports as a free evaulation program because I use Peachtree Accounting. I thought it was ridiculous how the program had very little intuitive structure, so I thought I would get try a supposed "quick easy" book to learn the basic skills. This book spent the1st several chapters trying to sell you on why Crystal reports is so great. By the time it got to a so called "tutorial" it was no better than the "help" section that comes with Crystal Reports. Its amazing how people can not simplify certain subjects. Crystal Reports is BEGGING another software company to invent a competitive product that is user friendly because theirs is just the opposite! ... Read more

Great Advanced VFP book! Must have!
Hentzenwerke Publishing is very famous for its technical books, especially among VFP developers. I'd certainly agree to that. The MegaFox book has very deep technical contents and very usable right away. I become more productive already after finishing the first chapter. Some of the stuff are a bit old because the book is based on VFP 7, and right now I'm using VFP 9. But still this doesn't reduce the usefulnes of the tips and tricks in the book pages. I highly recommend every VFP developers to grab this book and check out the other books from Hentzenwerke Publishing.

Excellent
This book can be valuable for an experienced programmer to quickly get up to speed with FileMaker. It assumes some basic knowledge of database and programming concepts. The author bypasses all the handholding and gets right down to business. I solved a sticky problem with many-to-many relationships by reading one chapter. Thanks to the author for taking a pragmatic and professional approach to the subject.

More Questions than Answers
This was either the result of an overzealous (non-programmer) editor or a poorly planned outline - but there is more material missing from this book than actually in it. Examples are given in one chapter with a statement that it is relating to something in another chapter, but it isn't there; projects are laid out without real explanation of the nuts and bolts of what you are doing, and the real power of Filemaker (calculations and scripts) are merely glossed over on a "need to know" basis. I am certainly left with more questions that answers.
