3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Data But Little Information
I have to agree with the majority who post about this book that the book is an impressive bricolage of data about all aspects of the application. Certainly having some computer background helped me to understand some technically dense ideas about the various characteristics of Access 2000, but the problem is if you're not a database/computer science person, this book doesn't have enough meaningful examples or interpretation to help you learn. This book is NOT for someone who wants to learn how to develop an Access 2000 Database, and more like a good overview for someone who already is an established database hewer. (Which I suppose is fair since the book posits itself as advanced...)

2-0 out of 5 stars No a good book
This book is not a good book. If you want to learn MS access, stay away from this one. With more than 1000 pages without organization. The author better is a fiction writer than a technical writer.
3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
For such a big book, I expected more. I have a decent amount of computer experience, although I had none with Access. The book starts out doing a fairly good job of introducing the reader to the more mundane uses of the program. But I soon realized that if I wanted to put together some more creative applications, I would need to combine Access with structured query language (SQL) and some Visual Basic (VBA) programming. 5-0 out of 5 stars Data Driven Web Sites with Microsoft Access 2000
From the moment I opened this factual, precise and yet self- explanatory work of intellect, my answers to problems in the world of information technology were all fulfilled. Surely, the world of technology changes at the speed of light and so does the world of business. The author has fully incorporated this approach in creating a holistic work which embodies the concepts of the Internet and the World Wide Web (yes, they are in fact completely different), tying into the literature screen shots and sequential series which polish the seasoned user of Microsoft Access and I suppose, enlighten the skills of the novice.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Files Make A Potentially Good Book Mediocre
I was looking for a book that had theory and enough exercises to improve my fluency in use of VBA.This book has the theory but, due to an obviously extremely flawed production process, fails to include the chapter by chapter sample files on its CD that the authors claim are included. This severely constrains its overall utility. Also, as another reviewer has indicated, the authors sometimes play fast and loose with some of their explanations.I could probably overlook this, if the sample files had been included on the CD or if the publishers respected their customers enough to provide them with a page to download the files.Instead, the publishers simply indicate that they will not help title purchasers.4-0 out of 5 stars Have you guys bothered to go to their website?
All wrox books ship without CDs. You are supposed to download the code from their website.4-0 out of 5 stars Content is great- CD is lacking
The book itself is GREAT!Lots of great concepts and tips, etc.The only problem is the book ships with a CD that does not have all of the chapter examples! On page 29 it states they provide a file for each chapter, specifically for the work they have done in that chapter.None of the chapter by chapter examples are on the disk. You have to email the company to get them to send you the disk. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite thus far
I have worked with Access97 for several years now, but the person designing the databases worked strictly in macros.I had read enough of the developer's books to realize that isn't the proper way to go, but those books were over my head since I had never had any programming experience. This book fit the bill because it assumed I knew nothing else.I think if I master this book and the Access Macro & VBA handbook by Susann Novalis that I will then be ready for the developer's books. Novalis described it as: intro books - walking; intro VBA programming - running; developer books - flying.I really want my databases to fly, but I have to learn to run first.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the information you need to customized your Access DB
Great tutorial with specific examples that walk you though customizing Access DBs with a business purpose in mind. Really great book, I highly reccommend it to anyone who is planning to learn how to build customizedaccess applications. Worth every cent you spent on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A well-organized tutorial on developing Access applications

3-0 out of 5 stars Not sure what kind of Beginner they mean...
I'm a SQL database programmer, not an application programmer, so I thought I could pick up Access VBA fairly quickly. Not so much, as it turns out. I started off with Alison Balter's Mastering Microsoft Access 2003 Development, which didn't give me enough basic grounding to really "get it". I succeeded in using some of the examples to my purposes, but couldn't do any truly innovative adaptions because I really didn't understand what I was doing.
2-0 out of 5 stars helpful but frustrating
i have to agree with all who say this book is hard to understand and to use - there are some good exercises, although one does have to puzzle one's way through them - there are recipes of how many of which type of controls to use but one has to go back and forth to name the objects to fit the code.i do like that the user can replicate the code and learn some convention in the process.the text is hard to follow and to fathom in that it seems the explanations of some of the concepts is superficial and thus hard to understand the concept.the absolute most frustrating thing for me is that there are no "answers" for the challenges.. if one gets stuck there is nothing on which to rely for help.. it is very difficult to know which part of the code one is supposed to parrot and adapt where.. and why things don't work.. i find it easier this time around to deal with the book, now that i have worked on three fairly complex database designs but i am still getting confused, lost and frustrated..

5-0 out of 5 stars For VBA Absolute Beginners not for Access Absolute Beginners
Hi, I bought this book, and it actually took a little over a month for me to receive it, since I thought it had been lost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beginners stay away from this
This book is slow and inadequate if you want to learn about Microsoft Access. It tries to explain a sample database that comes on a CD with the book. And it is pathetic at that. They hardly everexplain how to create things from scratch. Stay away from this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars A total disappointment, a worthless book
After trying to teach Access to my students with this badly written book I had to give up. I must agree with other reviewers. The book does not come close to explaning the very basics of database management in the right order of ideas. Too bad that Microsoft does not care to review their books before they go to press.

2-0 out of 5 stars good basic info but somewhat flawed...
i think this might be good starting point for learning access but there are probably better books out there. a lot of the examples are like "click on this" "type that" without really explaining to you what you are doing or what the other options that are available would do. so you are learning how to do one thing but the menu you chose itfrom has 9 other things you can do that arent explained, so if you were learning access and applying it to something at work if what you were doing didnt match exactly what you did in the book you would still do a lot of guessing or you would need another book. the end of chapter exercises also are either too vague or too step by step (making you feel like you are doing anything other than painting by numbers rather than learning)and there are no "answers" and not even a lot of pictures of what you should end up with, so for all you know you did it all wrong.this book and cd gets you comfortable access but just seems to basic for me for anyone other than someone who barely uses a computer ... I am new to Visual Foxpro after many years of using Foxpro for DOS 2.0 and I thought that this book would help me learn Visual Foxpro.
2-0 out of 5 stars NOT a good book to learn FoxPro!
Rip the first few chapters out of this book and it is a pretty good reference book. However, before figuring out that this is ONLY a reference book the reader must suffer through 150 pages of ridiculous "dummies" book snippets.I tend to read my new technical books front to back the first time. But I came very close to dropping this book in the trash before I realized there was worthwhile material behind the first three chapters of dribble. If you're trying to learn FoxPro, buy something else!

Every Visual FoxPro programmer should has this book at their desk. I read an earlier review which gave it a 1 star. Well give them a break. This book has excellent content!! Hmmm... I'm disappointed by this book ;( I really love the "Bible" series, especially books about Flash. These books has very broad-content, aiming on all from beginers to proffesionals. But the Filemaker Pro 8 is big disappointment... There is almost nothing about advanced techiques, for me it looks like it's intended for users who, for some reason, didn't want to read manuals which came with FM ;(... ... Read more

I own a Network Consulting firm which handles IT for Small to Medium businesses. That said, I know zilch about Microsoft Access.Recently a client asked I provide them with a simple inventory managment database. While I actually set them up with an out of box solution, I figured I should learn Access to possibly do our own development.
