nice UI for easy usage
Databases described in iridescent colour?! Indeed, that is the theme of this book. You might need sunglasses. I think O'Hara is doing outreach. The use of Microsoft Access is not being confined to a bunch of SQL experts. Instead, the book is aimed at a more general audience, who do not know SQL. Access's strength is in letting such an audience do useful work with relational data, without having to be acquainted with specialised knowledge.

Easy to read but leans toward the technical
This book provides one of the best references available for integrating Visual FoxPro and SQL Server. There are few guides for the Visual FoxPro Developer in how to create multi-user applications in Client/Server Mode. Urwiler, Dewitt, Levy, and Charon have teamed up to write a book that fills a large gap in the VFP to SQL Server integration area. The book provides a step-by-step process that is simple enough in format to understand and basic enough to put in practice with little previous SQL Server experience. The authors begin with a quick overview of client/server, basic database design and theory before moving into the more complex tasks of upsizing and connectivity.

A Lightweight but Effective Primer for the Basics
This book grew on me. It is woefully inadequate when it comes to teaching the real use of databases. The ideas and concepts are presented in a very superficial manner. Still, as I plugged on through it, I came to have much more respect for it.
Good primer that comes up a little bit short
Like the other reviewers, I like this book. I find, however, that it comes up a little short in few areas.

Not bad, but one of the weaker ones
I've enjoyed several other Hacks titles - Excel and Word particularly.This one is not quite the same; it's like a combination of interface and SQL hacks.Granted, there are many useful tips and ideas for code - not always bulletproof as another user mentioned, but if you know what to do you'll be able to apply these ideas.
Poor quality control
I rate this two stars, rather than one, because it's likely that most people will find something in the book which will put them onto a new way of doing something.

Helped me get my feet wet.
This book helped introduce me to VFP 6.0 even though it was written for VFP 5.0.Very elementary and good for the beginner.

The worst dummies book yet
I've purchased "Dummies" books before to get a quick synopsis of a topic.But this one by far, is a terrible buy.I knew nothing about FoxPro before and regardless of what I learned from the book, the authordid a terrible job.Most learning books have you build a project orsomething, but there was nothing like that here.You would think theauthor was going somewhere with a project, and then he'd just start a newparagraph with something else.Plus, many figured did NOT match the text. The author was also guilty of many "but, we'll cover that later"or "but we covered that in chapter X".This was a poor, poorbuy.IDG books are usually good, this wasn't.

Okay place to start if you are just getting into foxpro

A Glorified Reference Card
This is a book, not a reference card, in reality but that does not stop it from being a reference card in conception and execution. Anyone wishing to learn how to use Access will be sorely disappointed because the TEACHING is virtually non-existent. Instead, it is a very comprehensive reference in the form of: "To do______, first do ____ and then do ____" sort. It is like those reference cards found at the end of books.

Great book for beginners
I would recommend this book for "computer literate" folks who are new to Microsoft Access.The book covers all/most of the tasks beginners would want to accomplish using a personal database application.I was able to create a simple database (one table) with the functionality - forms, queries, reports - I needed over a single weekend using this book.The data was imported from an Excel spreadsheet which I had been using for reports.The Access migration now gives me better (and easier to manage) functionality than I got with the spreadsheet.

This book is hillarious for it's glaring errors. As the author obviously knows a great deal about his subject, I can only assume the editor/s is/are complete idiots. Great book for beginners!

Good intermediate book
I found this a very useful adjunct to Stars and Child's book Learn Filemaker pro 7.Agree with the other reviewer that the screen shots are too small to read at a comfortable distance.Also unlike Stars' book the examples are not real tutorials.For me, I found the explanations clear and help me understand filemaker better.Would place SAMS Learn filemaker pro in 24 hr very low inmy choice of books for learning filemaker.It hindered my learning more than helped.Filemaker IS NOT a easy program to master.It takes time, diligence, lots of references and help from others.Avoid going it alone if possible.

All 'how-to' books should be this good
This may be one of the best 'how-to' development books on the planet. Incredibly Easy

I've read several Visusal FoxPro books, and to me, this was one of the better ones.It's not really designed as a reference book, but rather as a guide to helping the reader learn to use the various functionaliy available in VFP.This is a big topic, and the author addresses a wide range of issues. I would recommend this book to users who already have some (but not necessarily a lot) of VFP experience, and want to advance from a beginner to the next level.The book is over a thousand pages, so if you're looking for a "Learn VFP in 5-minutes", this is not the book for you. ... A very nice book
This was really an excellent book. It contains many great sample databases. You will get your money's worth in DAO.recordset operations. One section of sample code just did not work, which caused me to spend some extra time fixing. It was the code to generate Word Tables (Chapter 14). Better instructions for creating grouped Data Access Pages (Chapter 17) were also needed. I also thought that instructions on running all the code in the last chapter concerning Active Server Pages were lacking. Other than these set backs it was still a great book. I think that in many places in the code there were opportunities for the author to implement domain aggregate functions instead of recordsets, With/End With code blocs, case expressions, Between/ And Where clauses in queries as opposed to two expressions joined together by an OR clause, Between/ And clauses in validation rules for tables, the IN operator in queries to avoid expressions with multiple OR operators, and general sub procedures for events that call the same actions. The more experienced reader will find these places and modify the code if he or she so desires. The author seemed to use the same techniques all the time no matter what the situation was as a way to keeping things as simple as possible, without bombarding the reader with other alternatives.

I knew the basics of Access. I can create tables, use the wizards to create forms and use the wizards to create reports. I have found many books that can teach me that. I've used his ASP books - this is just as good
I first read the author's work when I needed a "direct approach" to ASP scripts, so I thought I'd give his Access book a try because I saw an example like what I needed to develop.I am VERY pleased - his ability to clearly convey a tramendous amount of information embedded in nice, concise examples is this author's strength.Very much to the point - numerous examples - it's a whole book of well-explained examples.Very good book if you want to put together a successful applicatin in a hurry.Thanks again! ... Office Access 2003 Review
I personally did not like this book.I am pretty new to Access but I am young so I pick these programs up pretty fast.My work involved some advanced query work for data scrubbing.The book goes over every single function but does not go into depth about it.When it described a object (IE: list boxes), i really needed to know how Access stores the data and how i can access it, but the book was no help.I got a feel for the program's functions but could not use this book as a reference when i was coding.I wanted to use this book like i used Excel 2003 Bible, with the detail that I could refer too.Maybe I was looking for too much? ... Delivers what it promises
I read the bad review below and really have to ask what that reviewer expected from a book that has "Plain and Simple" in the title? This book delivers exactly what it promises: a plain and simple look at Microsoft Access. It quickly walks you through the basic knowledge and tasks of Access and essentially holds your hand by providing excellent step-by-step full color pictures that show you exactly what to do on nearly every page. Can you get through this book quickly? Yes. Is it for beginners? Yes. If you want lessons on database design, theory, etc., look for a book with "in-depth", "mastering" or similar phrases in the title. I bought this book when I had to learn Access quickly, and it didn't disappoint.

Scratching the Surface.
This book is only if you want to make a very simple database. It has no depth, and just briefly explains the various objects of access. Anybody looking to make a decent database, either small-business or home financials will not go anywhere with this book. I would strongly recommend that you invest a few more dollars for a better book. Clear & To The Point
The book's title says it all, but there are very brief explanations on some tasks. The color screenshots with captions are easily understandable. However, the very nature of Access demands more.
