Good reference on Linux subsystems, not a book for starters
This book is not for Linux (kernel) newbies but for those who already know their way around the kernel and seek detailed info on certain parts of it. This book has some good overviews on different subsystems of the Linux kernel. Some sections, like USB, have been expanded since the second edition of this book. I would have liked to see a section on the new 2.6 scheduler.
Not useful for a normal coder looking to learn Unix drivers.
If you are trying to learn how to write Linux Device drivers from scratch, this is probably not the book for you. I believe I am somewhat C/C++ savvy, and I expect sample code that is less than 10 lines of code to compile correctly.
Don't even read the free online version
This book was so badly written that I just couldn't help writing my first review on Amazon. I NEVER bothered writting reviews.

Magic bullet for quick DNS fixes/receipies
If you need to understand the difference between BIND 9 or Windows AD DNS and BIND 8, this is not the book for you. But if your management decides to tell you about the imporant new product launch on 20 servers in a new domain they just bought and kept under wraps to stun the competition which they need implemented in some novel way that requires a DNS twist, THIS will save you.
A 'MUST HAVE' for new DNS Administrators
This book has turned out to be the best investment I've made so far in my 20 year IT career. I've always trusted O'Reilly books for their detailed accuracy. However, for the task at hand, I didn't need a book to explain WHY things work... I needed one to tell me how to GET them to work. This book was perfect! It doesn't replace the DNS and BIND, 4th Edition, but is a great compliment... Actually, I'm finding the 4th Edition a perfect compliment to the Cookbook.

It displayed utmost rationality in its simple and concise way of dealing with most problems, which arise from Domain Name Systems. Very Useful, but it's Hit-and-Miss
Because this is a "cookbook," it gives you recipies -- step-by-step instructions for performing specific tasks.
Succinct and clear to understand . . .
A well-organised and clearly written collection of useful commands and solutions to help one along with the often exasperating arcana of Linux. Covers all flavours and is a 'must have' book.

The Domain Naming System (DNS) is a glorious thing. It takes familiar Internet network and machine names (like "amazon.com") and converts them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (like "208.35.218.15") that are meaningful to routers and therefore useful for identifying the machine you want to reach. What's amazing is that DNS enables someone in Germany to refer, by name, to a computer in Mongolia even if no one in Germany has ever accessed the distant machine before. It's pretty much self-configuring, too: No human effort in Germany is necessary to make the Mongolian machine reachable by name. Read more

Well Presented Concepts and Implementations (5th ed.)
Foreword: I have been running my own DNS servers on OpenBSD and FreeBSD for about 4 years. All of my previous DNS knowledge was obtained from the man pages and online tutorials. Most comprehensive book on DNS and Bind
First off, the most recent edition of this book was published in May 2006, so all reviews prior to that are discussing previous editions of this book.
Informative, but not as clear as it could be
I found this book to be informative, but I sometimes had trouble understanding what they where saying.I found The Concise Guide to DNS and BIND by Nicolai Langfeldt to be more understandable in some places.If you have a good grasp of other parts of unix system administration, this book would most likely be fine. If you are more of a beginner and only want one book, get The Concise Guide.However, I recommend getting both, because they supplement each other very well. ... Read more

TCP/IP Fundamentals
This book covers the in's and out's of TCP/IP with a Unix focus. Non-Unix users will find this book equally useful as the Unix user, in that it presents the information in a format that is easy to follow as well as comprehensive.
Cannot Live Without
Though this book is oriented to UNIX, I find it tremendously useful as a Windows administrator.Core concepts gleamed from thisbook has catapulted me greatly into my career, and allowed me to solve complex networking problems and avert major disasters.

Very good for a novice Unix user
First, I would like to strongly disagree with one negative reviewer who claims this book contains many technical errors including the one comparing Unix and DOS commands. I have found the book contains virtually no technical errors.

I have a whole shelf of Oracle books and I can tell by the fraying the ones that I actually use regularly to solve problems. Great for the newbie

Disappointed about the installation instructions.
The big reason why I purchased this book was because it claimed it was great about security and it said it would show how to setup these services the correct way.
Not Focused
I read every column of paranoid penguin and they are quite good.This book is ok, but not great.They (I mean they because several chapters are not by Mike) try to cover a huge amount of information and make the mistake of being both too broad in some areas and too specific in others.Overall, there wasn't a cohesive glue to bring the chapters together into a single vision.

No other OS X server book comes close
Even with 10.4 out this is still the number one book on Mac OS X server there is. Period. Bartosh goes deep in to all areas of OS X server and provides excellent examples for you to follow. This book has saved my hide on a number of occasions and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. If you only buy one OS X server book this is it.

This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration.
This book is organized into seven parts and one appendix: from new system installation to remote management and different kind of clients supported.
Best MacOS X Server book
For those who are familiar with MacOS X and would like to learn the server-side of the equation, this book is it. Apple's documentation has been sparse and this book covers that deficiency with great aplomb. This is the best Mac OS X Server book on the market right now. Too bad O'Reilly just cancelled the Tiger version because I would have first in line for the next edition.

DNS and what else you need to know
The book's first chapter is a must read for those who are starting with TCP/IP, namely DNS. Its discussion is very good! But if you're looking for something fun to read, this doesn't quite score high in that category.

Excellent Guide
This book is just what I was looking for.Excellent Security Guide to day to day security issues at my workplace.Information about TPC and UDP ports and their security risks have been very useful.
Order a wrong edition
I saw that there is a bargain of another paperback edition on the page of 3rd edition, so I didn't recheck whether it is 3rd edition. So I end up in buying 2 books, 2nd and 3rd editions, because I need the 3rd edition for my class. It would be better to put edition number up in the page, not only paperback or library binding!

A mile wide, several inches deep, great for filling in gaps
I hate to repeat the cliche, but if you can only buy one security book this year and you are a *nix geek, this should be it, hands down.As some point out, you can probably find everything in this book online, but then again you can find anything online, so why buy any books at all?I don't like giving 5 stars; this book left me no choice.Read more

Must have book for Tru64 Admins

Another Good Interview Guide
This is another good book in the Job Interview series from Rampant.As with the other books, this book gives both the employer and the candidate guidance in areas such as work experience, personal appearance and education.
too general to be useful
The advice on interviewing is very general and can be found to the same detail with google. The advice is all useful, but it's not worth the price and the style is a little goofy for what I expected to be a more professional book.
Rigidly conventional
This book is full of uptight opinions and puts the job candidate under the magnifying glass. It is almost impossible to please the author. You have to wear a bussiness suit(only white shirt is acceptable), if you don't, you may be considered disrespectful. Knowing the klingon language may indicate a personality disorder!! Let's get serious.

Very useful and accessible.
UNIX administration is notoriously difficult and sophisticated because one has to understand many things in their complexity. This books does not provide the complete coverage but there is no book that possibly could. If you found yourself struggling and having a difficulty with reading this one it means you need more background with UNIX to deal with administration. I found here on Amazon "UNIX Essentials" DVD that is complete UNIX course recorded and it can bring you to the point you will be able to work with book like that.
The very best UNIX System Administration book.
I have seem many different UNIX SA books, but this one is the very best.It covers all the important topics and concepts, and has detailed examples for everything the author discusses.This book is very easy to read and follow.

Not an encyclopedia, but it is handy!

Good at juxtaposing the Windows and Unix way of doing things
This is one of my all time favorite books because it covers an important subject of integrating Windows and UNIX systems on the same network. The picture on the book's cover shows a rock climber straddling two vertical cliffs, a perfectly appropriate metaphor for the daunting task of maintaining interoperability. The reference to have if you administer multiple *NIX systems
Solaris, Unix, Aix, Linux, and other variations of *NIX systems have more in common than they do differences when it comes to system administration.The primary goal of this book is to provide a administrative resource that is as useful to the AIX administrator as it is to the Linux administrator.The book starts with a chapter on what you should do if you end up working on a *NIX system that you did not install.It provides both information and specific items to check in order to document and understand exactly how it is set up.From there the book moves to basic scripts that can be used to automate administration.The rest of the book covers such items as baselining, maintenance, backup, new system setup, test system creation, and secure systems.Chapter 5 is particularly useful as the author discusses the boot process and init states of the various flavors of *NIX.If you are used to one particular *NIX system and end up administering another one you will want this book at hand just because it spells out some of the differences as well as the similarities and this could prevent a major mistake (such as switching to init 5 on a Solaris system which shuts it down when you are trying to initiate a graphical interface which is what it would do on a Linux system).The Unix/Linux Survival Guide is highly recommende
